One down, two to go…

Military Bowl from Washington, DC today was actually a good one.  The game see sawed back and forth with 24 San Jose State solidifying their top 25 ranking with a 29 – 20 victory over Bowling Green.

In Charlotte, NC, the Belk Bowl is underway with Duke leading, 16 – 10 over  Big East Co-Champion Cincinnati.  If Duke were to prevail, it would be their first bowl victory in over 50 years.  Duke jumped out to an early and impressive lead, 16 – 3 and then had a shot at another TD which was fumbled away and Cincinnati recovered.  The Bearcats proceeded to close the gap.  With under three minutes to go in the first half, Duke punted the ball away and put Cincinnati on their own one yard line.  Cincinnati proceeded to drive down the field and take the lead, 17 – 16.  Duke then mounts a drive a kicks a 53 yard field goal which was nullified by an illegal substitution call against Cincinnati on defense.  Duke then missed the 48 yard field goal attempt (heartbreak!)  This looks like it is going to be a good one.  Gotta pull for Duke, and the ACC.  Halftime – Cincinnati leads 17 – 16.

Later tonight the Holiday Bowl from San Diego should be a good one as well,  Baylor vs. 17 UCLA.  Expect some scoring.

Recap of these games to follow along with preview of three more bowl games tomorrow, Independence Bowl, Russell Athletic Bowl, and Meineke Car Care Bowl (all on ESPN).

Come on guys, you gotta love College Football and bowl season!

Peyton Manning – King of the Pro Bowl

Who else but Peyton Manning should be named King of the Pro Bowl, or at least King of the Pro Bowl selection tally!  Peyton has been named starting QB for the AFC in this year’s Pro Bowl and this marks his 12th selection to the honor, passing Brett Favre.  Peyton will be joined by Tom Brady and Matt Schaub.  For the NFC, Aaron Rodgers of Green Bay has been named the starter.  He is joined by Matt Ryan of the Falcons (way to go Matty Ice!) and RG III of the Redskins, the only rookie QB to make the Pro Bowl roster.  Other notables include Adrian Petersen, Calvin Johnson, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez of the Falcons.  Wonder why not Roddy White as well?  The Pro Bowl is January 27, 2013 in Hawaii, one week before the Super Bowl.  Interestingly, if any of these guys are in the Super Bowl, they will most likely be “no-shows”.

In other NFL news, Mark Sanchez will start for the Jets this weekend in place of Greg McElroy who has a concussion.  Tim Tebow is not pleased.

In NBA news, the Brooklyn Nets have fired coach Avery Johnson.  The Nets are currently 14 – 14 on the year.  Johnson was coach of the month in October and November after an 11 – 4 start.  How quickly things can turn…

Let’s go watch some college football!

Lakers come up short in bid for six in a row…

The Lakers were going for six in a row, looking like a team reborn after the return of Steve Nash.  Tonight, they fell short, losing to Denver on the road, 126 – 114.  Dwight Howard was ejected after being called for a flagrant two foul, first called a flagrant one and then reviewed and changed, and that did not help the Lakers in their quest to win on the road.  Kobe finished with 40 points.  Ten consecutive games for Kobe with 30 points or more.  Still, not a good loss for the Lakers.  Offensively they are operating on all cylinders; defensively, they continue to struggle at critical points and they could not overcome the loss of Dwight Howard in tonight’s game.

Little Caesars Bowl final

Central Michigan comes from behind to defeat Western Kentucky 24 – 21 in the Little Caesars Bowl.  WK running back Antonio Andrews finished with 119 yards, falling short of the yardage needed to break Barry Sanders’ rushing record.

In other college football news, UGA defensive standout John Jenkins has been ruled academically ineligible and will not be able to play for the dawgs in the Capital One Bowl against Nebraska on January 1, 2013.  Jenkins is projected to be a first round NFL draft pick.

Once is not enough…

Today, once is not enough!  I usually promote my book on Wednesdays, but only once.  Today, I must do a bit more!  Just had dinner out and returned after speaking with two of the people on the staff at the restaurant who had just read my book, Surviving “Paradise”.  Again, they both said “can I say sitcom”!  Met a guy from Denver last week who said he wanted to read the book and write a screenplay/script.  OK, I will be in touch with him, but again, this adds to the number of people who have read the book and said, perfect basis for a sitcom!!  Please buy my book, read it and let me know what you think.  Thanks!

Happy Wednesday everybody, so check out my book Surviving “Paradise”

It is the day after Christmas 2012 and it is Wednesday, that means it is the day I promote my book, Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.  It is available at Amazon.com for $9.99 in paperback and $3.03 in kindle edition.  It is fun, entertaining, and full of neighborhood mayhem and craziness that one simply cannot make up.  Please check it out!  It could hopefully one day be a movie or a sitcom, coming to TV or a theater near you!  Thanks for your support.

Priceless?

Being a lifelong Alabama fan, great!  Getting surprised on Christmas day by your son with tickets to the BCS Championship game, PRICELESS!!  I assume everyone saw the ESPN clip of the father in Alabama who was surprised by his son on Christmas Day with a ticket to the title game inside of a “Bear Bryant hat” on Christmas Day.  The joy, the emotion, it was priceless!

More good news for Georgia Tech?

In what could be perceived as “good news” for Georgia Tech, it is reported that Matt Barkley, QB for USC, is not likely to play in the Sun Bowl against the Jackets and risk further injury as he prepares to enter the NFL draft.  They will likely face backup and next year’s starter, Max Wittek.  GT’s interim defensive coordinator Charles Kelly has said it will make no difference in how they prepare to defend USC.  After all, they have Marquis Lee and tons of other offensive weapons.  Still, maybe it is a bit of good news for the Jackets.

Elsewhere, rumors swirl that the Philadelphia Eagles are prepared to make a strong push to lure Chip Kelly away from Oregon.  Does he want to follow in the foot steps of Pete Carroll (USC) and head to the NFL?  Time will tell.  Meanwhile, could this Sunday be the end of the road for Coach Andy Reid in Philadelphia?  Perhaps Michael Vick (who will start) as well?
