A tribute to Orwin Smith, A-back for Georgia Tech

Orwin Smith, senior A-back with the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will be playing his final collegiate game when the Jackets face USC in the Hyundai Sun Bowl on New Year’s Eve day.  The “Big O”, as he is affectionately known to all GT faithful is on track to be the first A-back to be the leading rusher on a Paul Johnson coached option offensive team.  He averages over 9 yards per carry.  He has had a bit of a tough year, missing some key games due to injury, but is healthy and cleared to play in the bowl game and hopes to go out on a high note.  We are hoping that for him as well.  He is a tremendous young man, the first person on his mother’s side of the family to attend college.  He is two classes short of a degree in management.  He has expressed interest in pursuing a MBA yet I am sure he will get a shot to play on Sunday’s after this year.  He completed two internships this past summer and also took yoga classes to improve his flexibility and focus (gotta love an athlete who appreciates the benefits of yoga!).  I am hoping for a great bowl game for Orwin Smith and know he will be successful in the future, whether in the NFL, the business world, and most likely in both!  As a Georgia Tech fan, I say thank you Orwin Smith!

Bowl season continues tonight…

Bowl season continues tonight with the Little Caesars Bowl featuring Central Michigan (6-6) vs. Western Kentucky (7-5).  This will be the first bowl appearance for Western Kentucky, which incidentally, is the next stop along the way for Mr. Bobby Petrino, who has accepted the head coaching position there.  Good luck with that!

Clippers extend streak to 14!

The LA Clippers, sometimes known as the Blake Griffin Show, extended their win streak to fourteen in a row with a 112 – 100 victory over the Denver Nuggets.  Jamal Crawford tossed in 22 points coming off the bench (why did the Hawks let him go?) and Matt Barnes added 20 points coming in off the bench as well.  Griffin played twenty six minutes and finished with 13 points.

Been a long day.  Happy holidays everyone!

Merry Christmas! Were you naughty or nice?

Hello everyone and Merry Christmas!  Were you naughty or nice?  Apparently I was nice this year!  How about you?

NBA on Christmas Day!  Boston rolls over the Nets, 93 – 76.  No real surprise here.

Lakers win!  Lakers survive Knicks, 100 – 94.   Kobe and Melo both score 34 points.  Pau had a great game as did Dwight.  Gotta tell you, I had a bet with my nephew today (just a small one $5.00).  He picked the Knicks and I said, no, Lakers will win.  And the Lakers won!!  Life lesson, never bet against me unless it involves Georgia Tech or Roger Federer.  Then, I bet with my heart.  I will bet on Roger Federer if he is playing on one leg.  Otherwise, do not bet against me in sports!  I knew Kobe and the Lakers would pull this one out and they did!  How about this statistic, Kobe is the leading scorer in the NBA on Christmas Day, even though the Lakers’ record on Christmas is 5 – 9.  Never mind, Lakers win and are on a 5 – 0 winning streak.  Welcome back Steve Nash!

P.S. I told my nephew to keep his $5.00, I only care that the Lakers won!  I love LA!

In Miami in a rematch of last year’s Championship series, OKC falls to the Heat, 103 – 97.

At the half, Houston leads the Bulls, 58 – 41.  Let’s see how this plays out and then we have one more to go, back to LA for Denver vs. Blake Griffin and the LA Clippers.

Silver Linings Playbook

Finally, I saw a movie I have been wanting so badly to see, the highly acclaimed Sliver Linings Playbook.  It lived up to all the hype and more!!  This movie is great.  The performances by Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence (what a star she is going to be, and already is) are phenomenal.  Robert De Niro shines as Bradley Cooper’s Philadelphia Eagles’ obsessed Dad.  The truth of this movie for me was the truth spoken by these two characters, supposedly “crazy people”, but really just damaged, traumatized people who were both in search of healing and authenticity.  The way these two come together and heal and find happiness was truly a beautiful thing.  This movies is “must see”.  Argo and Silver Linings Playbook are the two best movies I have seen this past year!  Can anyone say “Oscar nominations…”

Bit of NFL news…

Indy welcomes back Coach Pagano after his successful battle with leukemia. Coach Pagano will return to coach them in their final regular season game next weekend and into the playoffs.  Great story…best wishes to him, his family and everyone in the Colts organization!

Micheal Vick will likely return to start next weekend for the Vikings as QB Nick Foles suffered a broken hand this past weekend.

Hey now, Hey now, don’t say it’s over…

Hey now, Hey now, don’t say it’s over…Colin Cowherd bid farewell to SportsNation today.  There was a tribute to Colin with a rendition of “Colin’s favorite clips”…coming on the heels for me personally of last night’s viewing of The Sound of Music and “a few of my favorite things”.  It will not be the same at 5:00 pm or 6:00 pm (time has changed over the past year) to watch SportsNation and not see Colin.  I am sure Charissa will do a great job with the new version coming to us from LA in January2013.  So long Colin, you will be missed!
