Roger Federer news…and other tennis!

Roger Federer news.  It is like the gift that keeps on giving.   The “Federer Tour” has come to an end.  Very unusual to see Roger playing tennis this time of year, especially doing an exhibition tour.  But how can you can complain.  (see above, the gift that keeps on giving!)  This tour included stops in Brazil, Argentina and Columbia.  Roger defeated Del Potro, 6 – 4, 7 -6, after losing earlier, 3- 6, 6 – 3, 4 – 6.  Roger proceeded to praise Del Potro, (that is Roger), saying he could become #1 in the world with the proper training and focus.  Roger has been a big fan of Del Potro ever since he lost to him in that five set thriller in the final of the US Open.  I would assume Roger will now take some time off for rest and family before getting himself ready for 2013.  Looking forward to the Australian Open in January 2013.

In other tennis news, Kim Clijsters defeated Venus Williams 6- 3, 6- 3 in a “farewell match”.  Kim officially retired at this past US Open.  She will be missed.

Looking forward to tennis in 2013.  Hope Rafael Nadal will be back and in form for Australian Open.

It’s my day (Wednesday) and I will do what I want to…

Remember the oldie but goldie, “It’s my party and I’ll cry if I what I want to”…well, it is Wednesday, and I will plug my book!  Check out my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver at Amazon.com.  It is available in paperback for $9.99 and kindle edition for $3.03.  It is a good time, a fun and entertaining read of neighborhood mayhem in southwest Florida.  You can’t make this level of crazy up.  It has Lifetime movie written all over it, or perhaps “sitcom”.  Buy it, read it, and write a review.  Thanks guys!!

Wednesday mixed bag of sports news…

NBA news: Stoudemire returns to action tonight as the Knicks face off against the Nets tonight at 7:00 pm EST.  Most likely, the Knicks will bring him in off the bench.  Stay tuned…

NFL news: Mega Tron, the artist known as Calvin Johnson, formerly of Georgia Tech (GO JACKETS!) is on the verge of breaking Jerry Rice’s record for single season reception yards.  He needs 182 yard to accomplish this milestone.  Look for it to happen!

Adrian Peterson is on the threshold of breaking Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record.  He needs 294 yards.  This comes one year after he suffered a torn ACL in his left knee last Christmas eve.  Tres impressive, expect this to happen as well!

College Football news: Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly has been named the AP Coach of the Year.  Congrats!  Bill O’Brien of Penn State finished second.  (Heck of a job by Bill O’Brien this year at Penn State, given the circumstances!)

Stanford Coach, and Stanford alum, David Shaw has agreed to a “long term” extension.  Good for them and him.  So impressed with Stanford this year.  Still on the Stanford and Oregon bandwagon…

Wisconsin has reportedly found a new head coach, hiring Gary Andersen away from Utah State.  Utah State finished 11 -2 this past year and won the Idaho Potato Bowl going away.

Really love this one…Alabama Athletic Director is confident that head coach Nick Saban will stay at Bama and not head to the NFL.  Really???  Well, let’s see, his stint at Miami ended very badly.  He is going to contend for a SEC Championship and perhaps a National Championship year end and year out, and he makse more money than just about anyone else.  So, um…I don’t know.  There is always that lure…take Pete Carroll for example.  Did you think he would leave USC and go to Seattle, well the timing of what USC was dealing with may have had something to do with that.  He has fared much better in his second attempt at coaching in the NFL.  Also, Jim Harbaugh who left Stanford, look at the tremendous success he has had with San Francisco.  Plus, he did not have to move (at least not very far).  Well, let’s wait and see, first things first, National Championship game against Notre Dame, and then…hold your breath Alabama faithful!

Final note:  Colin Cowherd will be leaving SportsNation (ESPN2) after this Friday, 12/21/12!  Go long Colin.  Good for Charissa, she is off to LA.  And she is a Laker fan!  (of course)

A little Basketball news…

The  L A Lakers welcomed back Pau Gasol to the starting lineup last night and barely survived the Charlotte Bobcats with a 101-100 come from behind victory.  This makes it three in a row, but over less than stellar competition.  Much stiffer tests lie ahead, including another date with the Knicks on Christmas Day.

The Hawks survived the Washington Wizards in OT, 100 – 95.

In College Basketball, 9 Kansas ran all over and away from Richmond, 87 – 59.

Back later…

Tom Cruise’s new movie Jack Reacher out this Friday

Tom Cruise’s new movie Jack Reacher comes out this Friday, 12/21/12.  This movie is based on the popular best selling books by Lee Child, I believe there are seventeen in the Jack Reacher series.  Tom was on Letterman the other night and I have to say, he looks like he is 35!  Not much different than how he looked in Top Gun (“I feel the need, I feel the need for speed”!)  This movie looks intriguing, a character who just sort of shows up when bad things are happening and takes care of them.  Letterman noted that Tom Cruise movies to date have grossed over eight billion dollars (that is $8 billion) worldwide.  This may be the start of Tom’s next HUGE money making movie franchise!

Colin Cowherd leaving SportsNation, say it ain’t so!

Yesterday was Colin Cowherd’s last “Tuesday” on the popular ESPN2 show SportsNation.  The show is moving out to LA and Colin is staying in Connecticut and will continue with his hugely popular sports radio show The Herd with Colin Cowherd also on ESPN, and broadcast locally on 680 The Fan.

This show has been one of my favorites since it started a little over three years ago with Colin and Michelle Beadle (now with Access Hollywood) as hosts.  Charissa Thompson has replaced Beadle and is fantastic.  She will be heading out to LA (oh, so lucky!) to host the new edition of SportNation which will be coming to us from LA probably 1/2/2013.

Will not be the same without Colin!  Best wishes to them all and look forward to seeing what SportsNation from LA will offer us in the New Year.
