College Football on Monday

We have a number of interesting conference championship games to look forward to this weekend.  The Pac 12 will feature a rematch of UCLA and Stanford.  I would prefer to see Oregon in this game, but, hey, we don’t always get what we want.

The Big 12 will offer Texas vs. Kansas State.  The Big Ten will give us Nebraska vs. Wisconsin.  The ACC will feature FSU vs. Georgia Tech on ESPN2 at 8:00 pm on Saturday night.  I will be watching and pulling for the Jackets.  Say what you want, this game is not a lock for FSU.  Finally, the big one, the SEC Championship game, Alabama vs. Georgia, Saturday afternoon from the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.  I am pulling for Alabama, not only because I am a GT fan and do not want to see UGA in the National Championship game, but also because I really think Notre Dame vs. Alabama is the game we want to see.  That is of course not taking into account the fact that what we would really like to have had the opportunity to see  is Alabama vs. Oregon.  Again, to quote the Rolling Stones, “we can’t always get what we want”!

Now, for the Heisman Trophy update:  Who is the frontrunner?  Probably Johnny “Football” Manziel, in spite of the fact that he is a freshman.  Supposedly, freshman do not win the Heisman.  We shall see.  He has the “Heisman moment”, with the win over then #1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa.  Notre Dame’s Manti Te’o had a great moment against USC, especially with the goal line stand.  Marquis Lee has had a spectacular year playing in so many facets of the game, offense, defense, special teams.  Then Collin Klein, QB of Kansas State has had a special year, until the debacle at Baylor, which marred an otherwise outstanding season.

So who will win, well, there is one more weekend of action left before the Heisman Trophy is awarded a week from today in New York.  So, I am going to go with Johnny Manziel, what do you think?

Is Ndanukong Suh a dirty player???

For the second year in a row, Ndanukong Suh has had a “Thanksgiving Day” incident!  Last year, he stomped on the right arm of Green Bay offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith.  He was ejected for two games.  This year, he gave a cleat stomp to the groin of Houston Texan’s QB Matt Shaub.  Shaub has gone on record as saying this is not someone he would want on his team.

So, what do you think?  Is Suh a dirty a player, does he have a “problem”.  At the end of the day, this doesn’t belong in football, at any level!

Eli and the Giants are rolling…

Eli Manning and the New York Giants are rolling over the Packers, 38 – 10 with 7:00 minutes left in the 4th quarter.  This has been a surprising beat down.  Eli has thrown three touchdown passes.  It is probably all but over.  So…I will sign off and proclaim this a good victory for Eli and the Giants.

P.S. The Good Wife was very good tonight. Alicia’s mother paid a visit (heaven help her!!)

Until tomorrow…

BCS Poll is out!

Here it is, the latest BCS Poll!  1 Notre Dame, 2 Alabama, 3 Georgia, 4 Florida, 5 Oregon, 6 Kansas State, 7 LSU, 8 Stanford, 9 Texas A & M and 10 South Carolina.

ACC Schools come in at 13 FSU and 14 Clemson.

Interesting differences between this poll and the Coaches Poll.  Florida and Oregon flip flop in the two polls, as do Kansas State and LSU along with Stanford and Texas A & M.

Let’s face it, the winner of the SEC Championship game will play Notre Dame in the BCS Championship game.  I can live with that.  (As long as it is Alabama!) I still think Oregon is the second or third best team in the country.

I also enjoyed looking at the bowl projections on ESPN.com.  Interestingly, both had Georgia Tech in the Hyundai Sun Bowl which features an ACC school vs. a Pac 12 school.  The match up was GT vs. USC.  I would like to see that.  This of course assumes that FSU defeats GT in the ACC Championship game next Saturday night.  I have already given my thoughts on that.  It is not a given.  May sound crazy, but I think GT can win.  Either way, win – win for the Jackets after the year they have had.

SNF: Eli and the Giants are leading Green Bay 17 – 7 early in the second quarter.  Stay tuned.  Morgan Burnett, former GT standout just made a great play for Green Bay.  I will be watching, but I will also be watching The Good Wife.  ( I am, after all, a girl!!)

Updates later…or tomorrow, we shall see!!

NFL updates…

The Atlanta Falcons are 10 – 1.  They survive the Tampa Bay Bucs, 24 – 23.  This is always a close game for the Falcons.  Matt Ryan had a good day, in spite of two turnovers, one interception and one fumble on a sack when he was blind sided.  He threw for 353 yards and Julio Jones, playing injured, had a big day with six receptions for 147 yards.  Good win for the Falcons.  Bucs’ QB Josh Freeman has dropped at least twenty pounds and does not even look like the same person!  Also, good day for Falcons running back Jacquizz Rodgers who is a nice compliment to Micheal “the burner” Turner.  Matt Bryant missed two field goals, one wide left and one wide right.  Very uncharacteristic.  Still, a victory for the Falcons!

Peyton Manning and the Broncos defeated Kansas City, 17 -9.  Peyton had 285 yards passing with 2 touchdowns and one interception.  He was tested for a concussion after taking a hit to the helmet, but not to worry, he is OK!!!

The Bears defeated the Vikings, 28 – 10, with Jay Cutler returning after sitting out due to a concussion.  Jacksonville had a rare victory, defeating Tennessee 21 – 19 with Chad Henne at QB (formerly of Miami).  The Steelers fell to Cleveland, 20 – 14. Big Ben sat out due to a shoulder injury.  Congrats to Big Ben who is now a Daddy, father to a baby boy!

San Francisco led by QB Colin Kaepernick (replacing Alex Smith?) defeated Drew Brees and New Orleans, 31 – 21.  Rookie QB Andrew Luck continues to impress as Indy defeats Buffalo, 20 – 13.  In beautiful San Diego, Baltimore and San Diego went to OT, tied 13 -13.  With 1:12 left, Justin Tucker kicks a game winning field goal for the Ravens, who prevail, 16 – 13.  Great game for running back, Ray Rice.

Tonight, Green Bay visits Eli Manning and the New York Giants!

Also, BCS Poll out in a little over a hour!

Some misc. Sunday sports updates…

World #1 Rory Mcilroy shot a 66 and made five straight birdies down the stretch to overtake Justin Rose and win the title at Dubai.

College Football coaching carousel begins to turn as it always does this time of year:  Gene Chizik is out at Auburn, two years removed from a NCAA National title; Tom O’Brien will not be retained at N C State after another disappointing year.  Tom O’Brien returned to his alma mater from his previous position at Boston College; speaking of Boston College, it was announced that current head coach Frank Spaziani would not return.  There will me more changes likely, this is just the first phase of of “duck, duck, goose”!

The number one high school prospect in the country, Robert Nkemdiche from Grayson High School in Gwinnett County, Georgia who decommitted from Clemson, has according to his brother, decided on Ole Miss.  His brother plays at Ole Miss and his mother had earlier said she wanted her boys to play together.  This is unofficial, but his brother has been quoted as saying that his little brother will make his announcement in two weeks.  Stay tuned…
