The ATP World Tour Awards have been handed out and for the record eighth time, Roger Federer has been awarded the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award (voted on by the players).  He was also voted Fan Favorite again, ten years and counting!  (No. 1 in my heart).

From the O2 Arena in London…

The ATP Year End Tennis Event gets underway today, live from the O2 Arena (Bono fame!) in London.  Earlier, 3 Andy Murray defeated 5 Thomas Berdych, 3 – 6, 6 -3, 6 – 4.  1 Djokovic and 7 Tsonga are just getting underway.   Group B which will feature  2 Roger Federer will begin play tomorrow.  Fed will his play his first match against Janko Tipsarevic.  This event showcases the top eight players in the world, actually the top nine since 4 Rafael Nadal has withdrawn due to his knee injury.

Today marks the first day that Novak Djokovic officially takes over the number 1 ranking from Roger Federer.  Djokovic will hold this ranking through the end of this year, regardless of the outcome of this event.  Roger held the number 1 ranking for four months after taking it away from Djokovic this past summer when he won his 7th Wimbledon.  If Roger can prevail in London, it will be his seventh year end title in the past ten years.  Tres impressive!!!

Update: Djokovic takes down Tsonga, 7 – 6, 6 – 3

Continuing on, College Football news…

Little bit of new college football news, Collin Klein, 2nd ranked Kansas State’s quarterback suffered a mild concussion in this past weekend’s win over Oklahoma State.  He is expected to play this Saturday.  Also, Joker Phillips, head coach at Kentucky, will be let go at the end of this season.

BCS news:  Let’s get real, the BCS match up we all want is 1 Alabama against 3 (for now) Oregon.  The best defense (Bama) pitted against the nations best offense.  If we are honest, we all know this is what we are hoping for.  Apologies to 2 Kansas State, but it just does not carry the same cache as an Oregon vs. Alabama game.  Also, you have SEC, east coast vs. Pac-12, west coast.  Oregon has a couple of important games they must win ( vs. Stanford and Oregon State) to hopefully move into the number 2 slot.  Alabama has fairly smooth sailing, a test this weekend with 15 Texas A & M at home and a rivalry game with Auburn can always be tricky and then a tough SEC Championship game against most likely UGA (perhaps Florida?).  Still, when all is said and done, these are the two teams we want to see in the BCS Championship game.  It will also leave room for some other very intriguing BCS bowl match ups against the remaining top teams.

In closing, I will throw in an NFL update:  MNF will feature Philadelphia at New Orleans, 8:30 pm EST, ESPN.

Monday Sports News…begins with basketball

It is Monday, still adjusting to this new time change thing!!  Well, the Lakers are no longer winless, having defeated the Detroit Pistons 108 – 79, thank heavens!  Steve Nash, who suffered a small fracture to his fibula (left leg) last week is only expected to miss about a week of action according to Coach Mike Brown.  Again, it is going to take some time for this new talent to figure out how to best mesh their talents and play great basketball together.

On the subject of basketball, the College Basketball season kicks off this week with the Armed Forces Classic on Friday, featuring Michigan State and Univ. of Connecticut.  This will take place in Germany at Ramstein Air Base, the home of  U S Air Forces in Europe.  This is such a cool thing, especially as we approach Veterans Day on Sunday 11/11!  Great way to kick off College Basketball and show our love and support for the troops!

We’re still having fun, and we’re still the one…

We’re still the one, the only undefeated team in the NFL.  The Atlanta Falcons hold off the Dallas Cowboys to win 19 – 13 in the ATL.  We are winning close ones, but importantly, we are winning!!  Matty Ice (MVP Matt?) passed for 342 yards although no TD’s.  Both Rodey White and Julio Jones each had 100+ yards receiving.  Roddy White became the all time leader in pass receptions for the Falcons.  When we needed to run the ball, Micheal Turner and company came through.  Atlanta is 8 – 0 and in the driver’s seat in their division.  Let’s hear if for the ATL and the Falcons!!

BCS, NFL and a few other tid bits

Few more NFL finals: Seattle over Minnesota, 30 – 20; Tampa Bay 42 – Oakland 32; and New York Giants fall to Pittsburgh and Big Ben, 24 -20.  Eli could not work his 4th quarter magic in this one.

Falcons and Cowboys getting underway.  GO FALCONS!!  (Falcons trail 0 – 6 in 1st quarter).

BCS rankings are out!!  1 Alabama, 2 Kansas State, 3 Oregon (finally!), 4 Notre Dame, 5 UGA (OK, I must deal with this!), 6 Florida, 7 LSU, 8 South Carolina, 9 Louisville, and 10 FSU.  Interesting the subtle differences in this poll from the AP and Coaches.  I don’t know what to make of the impact of the computer polls.  Apparently the computer polls are not a fan of Oregon. Well, with two ranked opponents remaining on their schedule and only only one (Texas) remaining on the Kansas State schedule, this could get really interesting.  At the end of the day, anyone who does not think that the two best teams in the country right now are Alabama and Oregon has some explaining to do.  Obviously, the computers cannot talk to us, so we shall see as the season winds down.

Tomorrow, ATP Year End Finals in London get underway.  Djokovic has secured the number 1 ranking as far as this year end goes. But if Federer wins this event, which would be his seventh title here in ten years, how legitimate is that number one ranking for Djokovic???   I just want to see Federer wave his magic tennis wand and make us all go, WOW, how does he do that!!
