Saturday Night Final…drama in the bayou

1 Alabama almost went down in the bayou tonight!  I picked this game as the “upset game” and during the first half, I was thinking no,no,no should have gone with Bama.  Then came the second half and Zach Mettenberger began passing the Alabama defense silly.  (over 293 yards, unheard of in Tuscaloosa!).  With just under two minutes left in the game, 5 LSU was leading 17 – 14 and it  looked like that upset was indeed going to happen.  But A J McCarron  led the Tide down the field for the game winning TD, scoring on a screen pass to freshman T J Yeldon and Bama is 9 -0, still number 1 and leaves Baton Rouge with a 21 – 17 victory.  McCarron was so overcome with emotion, he spent the final moments of the game on the bench with his head in his hand in tears.  This was Alabama vs. LSU as we know and love it.  Ironically, LSU dominated Alabama for the better part of the game.  It truly seemed the unlikely upset was in fact going to occur until McCarron, who had not had a particularly good game, came in and worked his magic.  The nation’s longest home field winning streak is over (LSU at 22) and so are the Tiger’s hopes for a shot at the BCS championship.  Bama’s hopes are still alive and well after the drama in the bayou!

2 Kansas State survived a late surge by 24 Oklahoma State to remain undefeated but their QB and Heisman front runner, Collin Klein left the game in the 3rd quarter with an undisclosed injury and did not return.  He had 254 yards passing and 64 yards rushing before the injury took him out of action.  Will need to pay close attention to the status of this development!  Final score: Kansas State 44 – Oklahoma State 30.

4 Oregon put on a show in the coliseum with a 62 – 51 victory over 17 USC.  The Oregon defense may not have looked up to the standard it had shown earlier against the powerful USC attack but that offense is unlike any other!!  Kenjon Barner set a school record, rushing for 321 yards and scored 5 touchdowns.  (How is he not a Heisman candidate?)  Freshman quarterback Marcus Mariota threw for 4 touchdowns, and Oregon’s total offense of 730 yards along with the 62 points scored was the most ever against a USC team.

With Notre Dame winning in triple OT over Pittsburgh, and all the above action going as it did, will there be any shift in the BCS rankings?  We’ll find out tomorrow evening.

The late night game, Arizona State at 11 Oregon State is all tied up 19 – 19.  Also, earlier, 13 Clemson rolled over Duke, 56 – 20.

You gotta love College Football, right?

More CFB, Notre Dame wins in 3OT…

OK, this has been wild and crazy!!  3 Notre Dame wins a game in triple OT they could have (should have) lost, 29 – 26 over hard fighting Pittsburgh.  Notre Dame battled back from a fourteen point deficit, survived a fumble on a sure TD in the 2nd OT and a missed field goal by Pitt which would have won the game, and are 9 – 0 for the first time since 1993.  Sometimes, you are both lucky and good.

Other action: 6 UGA defeated Ole Miss, 37 – 10 after a sloppy and turn over prone start to the game; 23 Texas wins over 18 Texas Tech 31 – 22 in College Station (I am surprised at this one!); 14 Stanford rolls over Colorado, 48 – 0;  20 Nebraska outlasts Michigan State 28 -24;  and TCU upsets 21 West Virginia in Morgantown, 39 – 28 (good bye top 25 for WVU).

13 Clemson is currently up on Duke 28 – 16 and 4 Oregon is leading  17 USC 27 – 17 in the 2nd quarter.  Go Ducks, I want them to prove a point here, no pun intended.  (It has to do with the computer rankings!!)

It is time…1 Alabama at 5 LSU and I am going to predict……an upset, LSU. ( But I may change my mind, what, I can’t?)  Hold on, it is about to get underway!

Also, 2 Kansas State at 24 Oklahoma State getting started as well!

Later tonight, 10:30 pm EST start, 11 Oregon State, coming off an upset from last weekend, hosts Arizona State.  May have to catch up on that one in the am.

Get ready for Bama and LSU!!

Early Saturday results…

First things first.  From Friday night, Washington comes from behind to win their first road game in over a year, defeating Cal 21-13.

The Lakers are now 0 -3, falling to the Clippers in spite of Kobe’s 40 points.  Too early for anyone to tell me “I told you so” yet!  I still believe..

OK, Georgia Tech brought back the gold helmets (thank heavens) and traveled to Maryland to take on the Terps.  The Jackets win 33 – 13.  Tevin Washington started the game at QB but Vad Lee also saw a lot of action in both the first half and the second half.  As previously noted, Maryland was starting a former linebacker at QB, having lost 4 starting quarterbacks already this season.  Let’s summarize: the good and the bad!

The good: Both Tevin and Vad Lee looked good running the offense.  Orwin Smith had a good day rushing the ball for 89 yards.  Also, Synjan Days (former back-up QB) looked good at the A back position running the ball.  On defense, Jeremiah Attaochu had a nice day for the Jackets.  The defense had five three and outs, were the recipients of one turnover and did a better job on third down (a big sore spot this season).

The bad: The kicking game was once again an adventure, most notably after TD conversions.  For some inexplicable reason, this has gone south for the Jackets and they failed to convert on two conversions.  The TD pass allowed as time expired was not a “good” thing either, in spite of the fact that the game was already decided.

In closing, the good:  Georgia Tech wins after dropping four out of their last five games.  Let’s see if this can lead to something good down the final stretch!

Other final scores from early Saturday action; 12 Oklahoma over ISU 35 – 20, 10 Louisville over Temple 45 – 17, 7 Florida squeaks by Missouri at home, 14 -7, and 16 Texas A & M behind freshman sensation Johnny Manziel overpowers 15 Mississippi State 38 -13.

14 Stanford is currently having no problems with Colorado, up 35 -0 at the half.

Just getting underway, Ole Miss at 6 UGA and Pittsburgh at 6 Notre Dame.

Tonight some big ones.  Still not ready to make prediction on 1 Alabama at 5 LSU, leaning towards an upset???  I will predict 4 Oregon over 17 USC and 2 Kansas State over 24 Oklahoma State.  Stay tuned…

New movie Flight soars!

Saw the new movie Flight starring Denzel Washington.  This is a very complex and complicated character that Denzel plays.  The character of Whip Whitaker (portrayed with Washington’s usual brilliance) is no Captain Scully.  His actions are heroic and life saving but his character is tortured and flawed.  The always superb Don Cheadle is wonderful as a Chicago lawyer who fervently tries to save him legally, and the mesmerizing Jessica Chastain shines as a recovering addict who tries to save him from his addictions.  John Goodman plays an enabler extraordinaire and is having quite a fall as far as movie roles himself.  He was also seen in the movie Argo with Ben Affleck.  Flight is a definite must see and will most likely result in Oscar buzz once again for Denzel and others.  If I could only see one, between Argo and Flight, I would choose Argo.  None the less, Flight soars.  The ending is heartbreaking and heartwarming!!

So why choose when one can see them both!!

Meet the new 200 million dollar man…

Reportedly Nike has made Rory Mcilroy the new two hundred million dollar man!  The world no. 1 has inked a deal with Nike according to various sources that will make him Nike’s highest paid golfer, replacing who else, Tiger Woods.  One ad that has already been shot (according to sources) shows him and Tiger, who helped recruit Rory for Nike, enjoying some banter as they stroll the links.  Like I have said, these two like each other, they really do!

When you have five championship rings, you can say “Shut up”

Kobe Bryant has a message for Laker fans and others who are complaining about the 0 -2 start of the LA Lakers,”Shut up”!!  I guess when you have five championship rings, you have earned the right.  Kobe has told Laker fans (and media, etc.) to let the Lakers do their work and when all is said and done, they will be happy with the end result.  We will see the Lakers in action later tonight against the Clippers.  One thing is for sure, it will be in Los Angeles!  In all honesty, it may take some time to mesh this new mixture of talent and personalities together.  Given time, the Lakers will be just fine!  (Note: The New York Knicks are beating up on the defending champion Miami heat at the half).

Here it is…weekend College Football preview!

First things first, let’s put a bow on Thursday night’s action.  San Diego Chargers defeated the Kansas City Chiefs, 31 -14.  The only really pretty thing about this game was the San Diego backdrop.  In ACC action, Miami defeated a surprisingly bad this year Virginia Tech team, 30 – 12.  VT had three turnovers, two of them being  interceptions thrown by QB Logan Thomas who did not have a good game.  Miami takes a half game lead in the Coastal Division over North Carolina and Duke (yes, Duke)!

Friday night College Football features Washington at California.  (Two pretty good NBA games on as well).

NOW, drum roll please, let’s get to this weekend’s action!

Noon games will feature the following:

Georgia Tech visits Maryland.  Maryland will be starting their fifth string quarterback (a former linebacker).  Will Georgia Tech start Vad Lee at QB for this game??

Missouri will visit the swamp to play 7 Florida.  Can the gators rebound from last week’s tough loss to UGA?

16 Texas A & M (will be in the SEC next year) vs. 15 Mississippi State (long time member of the SEC).  Should be a good game!

12 Oklahoma will visit Iowa State and also at 2:00 pm EST, 14 Stanford will play Colorado (should be no surprise outcome in this game).

3:30 pm EST will bring us Ole Miss at 6 UGA.  Will the dawgs be flat after last weekend’s big win over Florida?

Pittsburgh (playing without their starting WR and RB due to assault charges) will travel to South Bend to take on 3 Notre Dame.

And perhaps the biggest mid-day game; 23 Texas vs. 18 Texas Tech in Lubbock.  Maybe this one is big because it is two Texas teams?  I sort of don’t get why Texas is still ranked?  Moving on…

Saturday night match ups are huge!!  At 7:00 pm EST we have 13 Clemson at Duke (Clemson should prevail) and in a hugely important game, 4 Oregon vs. 17 USC in the coliseum.  This is Oregon’s chance to start picking up points by beating ranked opponents and show the BCS where they really belong?  Should be a good game.  Love watching  Oregon play anyway,  only team where if you blink, you may miss two touchdowns ( at least!).

8:00 pm EST brings us to two prime time games! 24 Oklahoma State vs. 2 Kansas State and Heisman front runner Collin Klein and then…..

1 Alabama travels to Baton Rouge to take on 5 LSU (the team with the longest home winning streak in the country).  We have all been waiting for this one and I do not think it will in any way disappoint.  Predictions???  Not yet.
