Best Exotic Marigold Hotel

Watched a very interesting movie, Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which starred a number of Oscar nominated actors as well as Oscar winners from years past.  The movie is about a group of elderly British people who relocate to a hotel in India, run by a young man, Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) that is failing, much to the chagrin of his domineering mother.  All of the characters have a “story” of course, and the reasons they are there are a wonderfully significant part of the story.  Don’t want to ruin it for anyone, so I will leave it that.  Very interesting story with India, interesting culture and scenery, as important part of the backdrop.  Also stars Dame Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkerson and others.  My favorite quote from the movie: “Everything will be alright in the end…and if it is not…trust me, it is not the end”!

Florida Gulf Coast College – Coach has a supermodel wife…

Florida Gulf Coast College, the Cinderella team in this year’s NCAA Basketball Tourney is the school no one had heard of a week ago.  Not too long ago, it was essentially an “online” school.  Now, it is “Phi Slamma Jamma” part deux, and headed to the Sweet Sixteen this weekend.  Their head coach is a guy by the name of Andy Enfield.  His wife has received quite a bit of attention from the media as she has been shown in the stands cheering on her husband and the team.  Her name is Amanda Marcum and she is a former model.  (Beware of Brent Musburger!)  Anyhow, she has graced the covers of such magazines as Elle, Maxim and Vogue.  They met when Andy gave her a ride from New York to Boston for a NCAA tournament game.  A few days later, they went to another game and ended the night with a romantic dinner at Taco Bell (gotta love that!).  Six months later, they were engaged and now, viola, they are happily married with three young children, two daughters and a son.  Her husband is the toast of the town.  Really a cute story.  Don’t know if the Cinderella run will end this weekend or not, but hope that these two can continue on their road to happily ever after!

Robin Roberts – Profile in Courage

Robin Roberts will receive the Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the 2013 ESPY Awards this summer (July 17, 2013).  Robin is a breast cancer survivor and most recently has gone through a bone marrow transplant to combat a rare blood disorder.  She was the first female sports announcer at ESPN in the 1990’s and is currently a member of ABC’s Good Morning America team.  Robin has been very public with her health battles and has been an inspiration to people everywhere.  If anybody embodies the the Jimmy V philosophy of “Don’t Give Up, Don’t Ever Give Up”, it is Robin Roberts.  Congratulations and best wishes to her!  You Go Girl!  With admiration and respect…

Miami Heat extend streak to 27…Lakers stumble again

A tale of two greats, Miami Heat and the LA Lakers.  LeBron James and Kobe Bryant.  The Miami Heat extended their winning streak to 27 straight games last night with a 108 – 94 victory over the Orlando Magic.  They did this with one of their superstars (Wade) sitting out for the second consecutive game nursing a bad knee.  This team is chasing the all time consecutive game win streak held by, you guessed it, the LA Lakers, 33 games accomplished by the 1971 – 72 team.  Will the Heat get it done?  Watching them you would say it is certainly very possible.  Of course, you don’t know when this team of superstars and stars and young talent could slip up and just have an off night.  That being said, after the first year in which they needed to learn about each other and how to play together along with adding some key other players, this team has become a juggernaut with King James at the helm.  On the flip side…

The LA Lakers continue to struggle and stumble, losing last night at Golden State, 109 – 103.  They trailed miserably in the first half; as a Lakers fan, it was downright painful to watch.  They did manage to close the gap somewhat in the second half, but not enough to get the win.  Things got a bit ugly between Dwight Howard and the Warriors’ David Lee with Howard suffering a lip contusion that required a few stitches.  Howard has said he will remember it, and will take care of it.  Oh my, I think  Howard and the Lakers need to remember the loss and focus on playing a complete game in each of their remaining games as they try to hold onto the one game lead they have sitting in the “coveted” 8th playoff position.  Interesting that here again, somewhat like Miami but also different, you have a team that has put together a huge array of talent, a coach who is being criticized and questioned, some young talent on the bench, that has not figured out how to best compliment each other and succeed at the the high level they are capable of.  Will be interesting to see what happen not just for the remainder of the season and throughout the playoffs, but in the offseason as they look towards next year.  Who will stay and who will go?  Or, will they give it another year to try and come together?  We shall see…I am still a believer in Kobe and the Lakers, maybe not this year, however.

Tiger Woods – #1 in the world again!

It isn’t Sunday, it is Monday, but Tiger Woods wearing Sunday red has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill for the 8th time and is once again, the #1 ranked golfer in the world.  Tiger claims the number one ranking for the first time since 2010.  He fell to as low as 58th in 2011 as his personal life and golf game suffered from scandal, injury, coaching and swing changes, etc.  You all know the history, now it is the present, and it is a very nice one for Tiger Woods.  He is by all accounts happy in his personal life, co-parenting his two young children, dating Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn, and as far as his golf game, well he is once again the very best.  Roger Federer accomplished a return to #1 in the world of tennis last year, a feat very few thought he could do.  Now, Tiger has reclaimed the #1 spot in the world of golf.  Way to go Tiger!

The final leaderboard after a storm and rain delayed finish from yesterday is as follows: Tiger Woods -13, Justin Rose -11, Rickie Fowler (playing with Tiger) -8, Mark Wilson -8, Keegan Bradley -8, Gonzalo Fdez-Castano -8.

And then there were Sixteen!

Three more teams punched their tickets into the Sweet Sixteen last evening.  2 Miami got by 7 Illinois in a close one, 63 – 59.  13 LaSalle edged 12 Ole Miss in another close game, 76 – 74 and 2 Duke leading 7 Creighton by only four points at the half, poured it on in the second half to advance with a 66 – 50 victory.

Sweet Sixteen competition gets underway this Thursday:  Midwest Region: 1 Louisville vs. 12 Oregon (how about those Ducks, and it is not college football, it is college basketball!); 3 Michigan State vs. 2 Duke.  West Region: 9 Wichita State vs. 13 LaSalle; 6 Arizona vs. 2 Ohio State.  South Region: 1 Kansas vs. 4 Michigan; 3 Florida vs. 15 Florida Gulf Coast College (this team must now be declared the “Cinderella” of this year’s tourney!).  East Region: 1 Indiana vs. 4 Syracuse; 3 Marquette vs. 2 Miami.

First time ever that three teams from the state of Florida have made the Sweet Sixteen.  Also, for all the talk about the Big Ten, the Big East, once again, the ACC sends two teams to the Sweet Sixteen!

Follow the yellow brick road…1Kansas advances

Follow the yellow brick road…after a very slow start, 1 Kansas rebounds to advance over 6 North Carolina, 70 – 58.  They head to the Sweet Sixteen where they will meet 4 Michigan (I have them going out in that game in my bracket?).  15 Florida Gulf Coast College became the first 15 seed to ever advance to the round of Sixteen with a 81 – 71 victory over 7 San Diego State.  They will next face off against one of the “big boys” from their home state, 3 University of Florida who knocked off 11 Minnesota, 78 – 64.  Three more games to follow tonight and then the Sweet Sixteen will be set.  Back with you tomorrow…

1 Indiana advances to Sweet Sixteen

1 Indiana advances to the Sweet Sixteen with a come from behind victory over 9 Temple, 58 – 52.  It was not easy, the Hoosiers scored the last ten points of the game to survive.  They trailed at the half by three.  No more bracket busting just yet today!
