Tiger and the President play a round of golf

Tiger Woods played a round of golf with President Obama today at the Floridian, an exclusive golf and yacht club on Florida’s Treasure Coast.  President Obama is spending President’s Day weekend there while his wife and daughters are out west on a ski vacation.  They were joined by Jim Crane, owner of the Houston Astros and Ron Kirk, outgoing US Trade Representative.  President Obama also spent some time with Tiger’s former swing coach, Butch Harmon.  Not every day you get that foursome on a golf course!

Exciting final day of golf in southern California

What a beautiful day in southern California for the final round of the Northern Trust Open!  Temperatures were a bit “cool”, high sixties (gee, highs in the low 40’s here) and an exciting finish culminating in a playoff with a local boy winning his first golf tournament.  Bill Haas started the day with a two shot lead but faltered.  When all eighteen holes were completed, two finished at -11, John Merrick and Charles Beljan (who holed a birdie putt on 18 to put himself into the playoff).  After the first playoff at #18, still dead even.  Then they moved on to the 10th hole and Merrick took the victory with a beautiful putt and Beljan missed his par putt.  Great first win for Merrick who hales from southern California and played his college golf at nearby UCLA.  Bill Haas finished tied for third at -10 along with Fredrik Jacobson and Charles Schwartzel.  Webb Simpson and Josh Teater finished at -9 and Hunter Mahan came in at -8.  Phil Mickelson closed out his four rounds at -3.  Beautiful day of golf on a beautiful golf course (golf scenes from the movie Tin Cup with Kevin Costner were filmed on this course!)

Danica Patrick makes history

Danica Patrick has made history becoming the first woman to win the pole position for the Daytona 500.  WOW, Danica was a really decent Indy race car driver, with one victory and numerous top ten finishes.  Never thought she would have a lot of success when she moved to NASCAR.  Not many of the Indy drivers who have dabbled with switching to NASCAR have had much success.  Congrats to Danica!  Still, the pole position is not a victory.  Let the race be run!

P.S. Could be an interesting battle between her and her new beau, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. for rookie of the year honors in this year’s Nationwide Series.  Danica races for the Stewart-Haas racing team.

NBA All Star Festivities

Last night, all of the pre-NBA All Star game “teaser” events  took place.  Back in the day, these events were more high profile, especially the Slam Dunk contest because all the “top players” participated, think Dr. J, Dominique Wilkins, Michael Jordan.  Now, that is no longer the case.  At any rate, the show goes on and last night rookie Terrence Ross of Toronto won the Slam Dunk contest.  The 3 point shooting contest was won by Cleveland rookie Kyrie Irving (of Duke) and the Skills Competition went to Portland rookie, Damian Lillard.  The Shooting Stars Contest was won by the trio of Bosh, Cash and Wilkins.

I thought the best part of the show, besides the Slam Dunk Contest which was not bad, was listening to “Chuck” (Charles Barkley) and Shaq!  Very entertaining banter.  The actual All Star Game takes place tonight from Houston, TX at 8:00 pm EST on TNT.

Tennis winners

Rafael Nadal has won his first tournament since June 2012 when he won his 7th French Open.  Returning to the tour after seven months to rehab his injured knee, Rafa has broken through with a victory in Brazil, defeating David Nalbandian, 6 – 2, 6 -3.  Congrats to Rafa!  Looking forward to seeing him along with Murray, Federer and Djokovic at Indian Wells, CA in early March for the always popular Paribas Open.

Juan Martin del Potro has won the ABN AMRO Open in Rotterdam, Netherlands, defeating Julien Benneteau, 7 – 6, 6 -3.  Benneteau seemed a bit sluggish, perhaps the result of two hard fought victories over Federer in the quarters and fellow countryman Simon in the semis.  The thirty one year old Benneteau was no match for Del Potro in the second set and last year’s runner up is this year’s champ in Rotterdam.  Congrats to Del Potro!

Finally, Serena Williams will become the new number one in the world on Monday, but on this day, Sunday, she was defeated by the current number one, Victoria Azarenka at the Qatar Open, going down 6 – 7, 6 -2, 3 – 6.  Azarenka can reclaim the world number one ranking next week in Dubai if she makes the finals and S. Williams does not.  Very tight race at the top in women’s tennis right now!

Dukies fall in last visit to Maryland

2 Duke goes down in their final visit to Maryland, 83 – 81.  Maryland is leaving the ACC to join the Big Ten.  Really a shame as yet another great rivalry with tremendous history will come to an end.  Huge win for the Terps.  Could be the signature win that allows them to continue the journey, perhaps right on into the tourney.  Disappointing loss for Dukies, but again, hard to win on the road, especially against quality competition, especially when you factor in the rivalry game and the history.  End of an era!  Plumlee fouled out for Duke but don’t know if it really mattered.  Maryland was on a mission and tonight was a huge victory for them!  Congrats.

Tennis updates

Juan Martin del Potro will face Julien Benneteau tomorrow in the final of the ABM AMRO Tournament in Rotterdam, Netherlands.  Benneteau is the dragon slayer, sending defending champion Roger Federer packing yesterday in straight sets Cry.  Anyhow, time for me to be over that, so look forward tomorrow to hopefully a great final between these two as they will face off for the title.  Coverage is on Tennis Channel.

In women’s tennis news, Serena Williams (who will become #1 in the rankings next week, the oldest women to regain the top ranking) defeated Sharapova for the tenth straight time today, 6 – 3, 6 – 2.  In the other semifinal, outgoing #1 Victoria Azarenka defeated A. Radwanska, 6 – 3, 6 -3.  Williams will face Azarenka tomorrow for the title.  Coverage is also on Tennis Channel.  The new #1 vs. the “current” #1, should be a good one!
