MLB – pitchers and catchers report to spring training

MLB fans rejoice, today is the day pitchers and catchers report to spring training.  That means the start of baseball season is just around the corner.  Speaking of MLB, there is apparently a hitch in the huge deal for pitching ace King Felix.  The deal with the Seattle Mariners was reportedly for 7 years/175 million, the largest for a pitcher in MLB history.  There is concern about the health of his elbow on his pitching arm.  According to sports news outlets, they are not yet close to finalizing this huge deal.

Stay tuned…

Indiana, Duke and Miami…1,2,3 in AP Poll

The college basketball AP and Coaches Polls are out and in the AP Poll, Indiana remains at #1 (I was right?)  In the Coaches Poll, Duke is once again #1.  Miami comes in at #3 in AP Poll, #4 in Coaches Poll.

AP Poll: 1 Indiana, 2 Duke, 3 Miami, 4 Michigan, 5 Gonzaga, 6 Syracuse, 7 Florida, 8 Michigan State, 9 Arizona, and 10 Kansas State.  Butler comes in at #11 and Kansas fell to #14.

USA Today Coaches Poll: 1 Duke, 2 Indians, 3 Gonzaga, 4 Miami, 5 Michigan, 6 Florida, 7 Syracuse, 8 Michigan State, 9 Arizona and 10 Butler.  Kansas falls to #13.

A few differences in the two polls, Florida takes a big drop from last week, falling from #2 to #7 and #6 respectively.  Also, Kansas took big tumble after two losses last week (three game losing streak).

Miami the big mover, last week #8, now #3 in AP and #4 in Coaches. (Miami was only ranked at #11 in last week’s Coaches Poll).

Rafa returns, and loses in Chile

Rafael Nadal has returned and he played himself into the final of the VTR Open final in Chile today.  He lost in three sets to Horacio Zeballos from Argentina, 7- 6, 6 – 7, 4 – 6.  This seems somewhat of a surprise, perhaps even a shock, as it was a clay court match.  Rafa has been slowly making his way back into competitive tennis after recovering from an injured knee and losing at Wimbledon.  Rafa, in my opinion, does not look like Rafa.  Will he get back to playing like the Nadal we all know?  Perhaps.  I really question whether he will beat Djokovic, Murray, even Federer at some of the upcoming events, especially the hard court ones.  We will find out in early March when they will all reconvene at Indian Wells, CA for the Paribas Open.  I  cannot wait to see how the big four match up in that event.  I think Rafa has put so much wear and tear on his body, especially his lower body with his style of play, that he might not ever be the same player he was.  I hope I am wrong, and knowing how competitive he is, I am sure he will do everything he can to prove me wrong.

Speaking of Roger Federer, we can look forward to seeing him compete in Rotterdam, the Netherlands this week with coverage of the quarterfinals starting on Feb. 14th.  Happy Valentines Day to me!

Sunday afternoon NBA action

Two great NBA games on this Sunday afternoon.  So much to see, not enough time, and/or TVs!  Golf, Tennis (see next post), college basketball, and NBA (Kobe, LeBron, Melo).  What can I say?  OK, first the Knicks fall to the L A Clippers, 102 – 88 inspite of Carmelo Anthony scoring 42 points.

In what I consider to have been the marque match up of the day, Kobe and the Lakers lost to LeBron and company, 107 – 97.  This was a very close game through three periods.  The Lakers committed too many turnovers in the 4th period after having a very clean and efficient first three periods.  Kobe finished with 28 points and 9 assists in what has been a winning formula for the Lakers as of late.  Howard played and scored 15 points as did Steve Nash.  LeBron set a franchise record for the Heat, scoring 30 or more points in five consecutive games.  Speaking of LeBron, he has announced he will not compete in the Slam Dunk contest at this year’s All Star Game festivities.  There has been talk of him perhaps taking part in the 3 point shooting contest.  The All Star break will be after this week’s action.

The Lakers are headed home, overjoyed to be so I am sure, after a grueling seven game road stretch which they completed with a 4 – 3 record.  Would really loved to have seen LA beat the Heat in Miami but such was not to be.  The Lakers competed well, however, and one can only wonder what if they had played like this earlier in the year?  Perhaps they would not be scrambling to make the playoffs!

College Basketball – Indiana wins but so does Duke

1 Indiana defeated 10 Ohio State on the road, 81 – 68.  Nice bounce back for them after two point loss at Illinois earlier this week.  With Michigan, Florida and Kansas also losing this week, quite an accomplishment for Indiana to prevail, especially with how difficult it is to win on the road in college basketball.  Many have spoken of how 8th ranked Miami may be deserving of the #1 ranking.  The Hurricanes have been tres impressive, however, I think Indiana could very likely remain at #1 in tomorrow’s polls with this victory.  4 Duke is currently leading Boston College on the road by 5.  If the Dukies prevail, they will head into what is one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports this week, facing off against North Carolina on Wednesday night.  UNC is not having quite the great year they are accustomed to; however, we all know how tricky rivalry games can be.  Stay tuned…perhaps Duke will be no. 1 again in the polls?

Update: Duke survives at Boston College, 62 – 61 in a frenzied finish.  So, will 4 Duke become number one again tomorrow, or will Indiana remain there? What about Miami?  Stay tuned…we shall find out tomorrow!

Final round at Pebble Beach

Another beautiful day at Pebble Beach, CA for the final round of the A T & T National Pro Am Golf Tournament.  Brandt Snedeker wins finishing at -19 and rises to a ranking of #4 in the world, trailing only Rory Mcilroy, Tiger Woods and Luke Donald.  Not too shabby, uh?  This was Snedeker’s 4th win on the tour since 2011 which ties him with Tiger (Rory has 5!).  Chris Kirk came in second with -17, and three came in at -14, Kevin Stadler, Jimmy Walker, and James Hahn.  Snedeker and his partner Toby Wilt tied for the pair title at -31 along with the pairing of Letzig/Erickson.  A very beautiful weekend in a very beautiful setting for Brandt Snedeker!

Beautiful day at Pebble Beach, CA

Absolutely gorgeous day at Pebble Beach, CA for the A T & T National Pro Am Golf Tournament.  Brandt Snedeker leads the way at -12.  He also leads with his partner, Toby Wilt in the group pairings with -24.  Interestingly, Snedeker revealed in an interview that he attended Vanderbilt on a Toby Wilt scholarship.  Pretty cool.  So many celebrities and sports stars at this event, impossible to name them all; think, Clint Eastwood, one time Mayor of Carmel, Bill Murray (a fixture at this event), Josh Duhamel, Oliver Hudson, Huey Lewis, Ray Romano, Jim Harbaugh, Matt Cain, Scott Verlander, Andy Garcia, Andy Roddick, Bill Belichick, Brian Kelly, just to name a few.  The 7th hole, overlooking Carmel Bay is considered to be one of the most beautiful and picturesque golf holes in the world.  Final round continues tomorrow, 3:00 pm EST.
