5 Kansas loses again

Maybe coach Bill Self knew what he was talking about this past week when he had very harsh criticisms for his Kansas Jayhawks.  The reeling 5th ranked Kansas basketball team fell again today in Norman, OK, losing to the University of Oklahoma, 72 – 66.  It was the third loss in a row for Kansas.  Ouch!  The is their first three game losing streak in eight years.  The journey to the tourney has hit a rough patch for the perennial power from Lawrence, Kansas.

Movie – Identity Thief

Finally saw a movie, has been awhile, used to try and go almost every week, gee I miss the good old days!  Anyhow, had been looking forward to seeing Identity Thief.  Big fan of Melissa McCarthy, loved her as Sooki on Gilmore Girls, love her on Mike and Molly, and well, when it comes to the movie Bridesmaids, what can you say about her performance??  Hilarious!

I also really like Jason Bateman.  I have enjoyed him in many movies, really liked him in Switch with Jennifer Aniston, even though it wasn’t a big hit.  I have mixed feelings about this movie (Identity Thief) in all honesty.  On the one hand, it definitely delivered some outlandish comedic moments, the laugh out loud throughout the theater kind of funny that I was hoping for.  Then again, it seemed to go a bit too far or too long with the ridiculous.  Don’t get me wrong, Melissa McCarthy does some comedy in this movie that no other actress in Hollywood could pull off.  But, it seemed to go right up to the edge, then fall over a tad.  There is of course a feel good ending, Bateman’s character is too good of a person for it not to have a “heartwarming” ending, of sorts.

I am eagerly looking forward to seeing Safe Haven next week, based on the best seller by Nicholas Sparks.  It was a good read and with Josh Duhamel, well it just could not be a bad couple of hours any way you slice it.  All you guys better get ready to take your sweetheart because it will probably be “the” movie to see next weekend after Valentines Day!

Great day to be a Georgia Tech fan

Today is a great day to be a Georgia Tech fan!  The Jackets won their first ACC road game today, defeating Virginia Tech, 64 – 54.  Georgia Tech was 0 -7 in games at Blacksburg prior to today’s game.  They built up a huge 25 point advantage only to see VT led by the nation’s leading scorer Eric Green (28 points) lead them back in the second half.  They threatened at times to cut the lead to single digits but every time they were on the verge, one of GT’s young players would step up and make a great play.  Georgia Tech is young but very talented and deep.  They had a huge contribution from their bench players today, especially Brandon Reed and Kammeron Holsey.  Udofia struggled with some foul trouble so Reed off the bench was a big asset for the Jackets today.  Freshmen Marcus Georges-Hunt and Robert Carter, Jr. were impressive.  GT had lost to VT earlier in Atlanta, blowing an eleven point lead and losing in OT.  This was a sweet victory for the Jackets, it is so tough to win on the road (ask 3 Michigan), so hopefully this will be a confidence builder for this young team as well.  Like the announcers said, this team is better than it’s record indicates and here’s to hoping that Yellow Jackets fans get to see that come to fruition as the remainder of the season unfolds.

In an earlier game on ESPN, 3 Michigan lost on the road to Wisconsin, 65 – 62 in OT.  It was a thrilling game, and again evidence of how competitive the Big Ten is this year.  Michigan has had a rough couple of weeks!

Currently on ESPN, 8 Miami is taking it to North Carolina, leading them 70 – 48 with about seven minutes left in the 2nd period.  This Miami team is for real!  They are 9 – 0 in the ACC, soon apparently going to be 10 – 0 in ACC play.  There is even talk going on as we speak of them possibly going to no. 1 in the country?  Who would have predicted they would be this good before the season started.  Still think that game with Duke in early March is going to be HUGE!

Update: Final score, 8 Miami 87 – NC 61.

Tiger Woods sends his private plane to pick up his gal pal

What a guy, uh?  Tiger Woods sent his private plane to Austria to pick up his reported girlfriend Lindsey Vonn, who suffered an awful season ending knee injury at the World Skiing Championships last week.  She is returning to the US and will have surgery next week.  Vonn has said that they were just friends and Tiger has had no comment.  Several reputable news publication have said they began dating last November.  Who knows?  But quite a grand gesture by Tiger.  They seem to make sense to me, she is blonde, blue eyed and gorgeous and is also a world class athlete.  She has had some difficulties in her life emotionally and has also been through a painful divorce.  Hey, I think they make a cute couple. (if true)

Lakers rebound against Bobcats

The LA Lakers rebounded from the tail kicking they got from the Celtics to beat the Charlotte Bobcats (MJ’s team) last night in Charlotte, 100 – 93.  Dwight Howard played and scored 12 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.  Kobe Bryant scored 20 points and had 8 assists with 7 rebounds.  Steve Nash added 17 points and 7 assists.  The winning formula of Kobe dishing out assists as well as shots was on display and the Lakers are now 4 – 2 on their difficult seven game road trip.  They wrap up tomorrow in Miami against the defending champion Heat, 3:30pm EST on ABC after the Clippers and the Knicks square off.   That is gonna be a tough one for LA in Miami!  I feel sure the Lakers are ready to head back to sunny LA and the Staples Center once the Grammy Award show finishes it’s performance on Sunday evening.

From the AT&T Pro Am at Pebble Beach

The AT&T Pro Am is taking place at the beautiful Pebble Beach golf course in CA.  The scenery is so gorgeous you almost lose track of the golf.  Currently atop the leaderboard is Ted Potter, Jr. (who?) at -8 along with Brandt Snedeker.  Hunter Mahan is -7.  The best story from this event is about Dustin Johnson.  He is paired with hockey great Wayne Gretzky.  Interestingly, Dustin is dating Gretzky’s daughter.  Awkward?  Wonder if it was planned or purely coincidence?  Kind of funny.

Five weeks and counting…

Once again, the #1 in college basketball has taken a fall!  Five weeks in a row, the current number 1 has gone down the very week they reach the top of the polls.  In this case, 1 Indiana lost at Illinois, 74 – 72 and it just goes to show what I always say, it is really tough to win on the road.  This is the second time Indiana has been ranked #1 and then lost and dropped down in the polls.  Will be interesting to see how things shake out next Monday after this weekend’s action.

Elsewhere, 4 Duke extracted their revenge against NC State, avenging the upset loss they suffered earlier in the year when yes, they were the current#1, beating the Wolfpack at Cameron Indoor Stadium last night, 98 – 85.  Mason Plumlee led the Dukies with 30 points.

Switching to NBA briefly, the Lakers fell with a big thump last night in the Garden to the Celtics, 116 – 95.  This brings their record to 3 – 2 in their seven game road trip.  Two more to go, the last one being a Sunday visit to Miami to take on LeBron and the Heat.  Really bad news for the Lakers to lose Pau Gasol for 4 – 6 weeks, or however long.  I saw them playing with a much better rhythm when he was getting a lot of playing time in the post.  Howard did play last night, and I am sure Kobe Bryant was proud of him.  Kobe scored 27 points but had 0 (zero) assists.  He has been averaging 9 assists per game as of late and that has been a huge factor in their recent success as well.   Congrats to Kevin Garnett of the Celtics, as he joined the 25,000 career point club, becoming only the sixteenth players in NBA history to do so.

Huge deal

The Seattle Mariners have signed ace pitcher Felix Hernandez to a 7 year/175 million dollar deal, the largest for a MLB pitcher in history.  WOW!

Speaking of Seattle, rumor has it that the Sacramento Kings of the NBA will file paperwork to move the franchise to Seattle.  According to Gary Payton, former great with the Seattle Sonics, the deal will be done by November??

In college basketball news, 5 Kansas had a hugely embarrassing loss last night to TCU, going down 62 – 55.  In the post game press conference, Kansas coach Bill Self called it the worst team Kansas had ever put on the court.  Gee, they are 19 – 3, I mean it was a bad loss, their second loss in a row, but, again, they are 19 – 3.  Harsh words!

Tonight, ACC game features  NC State in action vs. 4 Duke and 1 Indiana takes on Illinois in a Big Ten match-up.

Continuing with pop culture…Nashville!

The wonderful ABC hit Nashville gave us another drama filled episode last night with some twists not even I saw coming.  Beginning with the not so shocking, Gunnar and Scarlett move in together.  Avery, the jerk, now a “big star” or so he thinks, shows up for all the wrong reasons as usual, but he does pay Scarlett the rent he owes her.  Rayna and Juliette are out on tour and Teddy is non too pleased that Deacon has joined the tour, even though he is playing guitar for Julliette and Rayna had no idea he was coming along.  He runs into Peggy, now out of the hospital and living in a condo in downtown Nashville, and she reveals she is getting a divorce.  He gives her a ride home (few blocks), words and glances are exchanged, then a kiss and then they wind up in bed.  Very true words were spoken by Peggy, however, when she tells Teddy he is a man who she has always believed in and that he deserves to be happy.  She tells him that he should not have to work so hard to make someone love him.  She is of course referring to Rayna, but the words are very real and true.  Meanwhile, Rayna and Deacon are having awkward encounters in elevators while on tour.  Juliette, with the urging of Deacon, decides she is going to act on what she wants, and sings one of her new songs on stage, attempting to break her teeny-bopper queen image and become more a soulful artist like, guess who, Rayna.  Rayna is on the verge of getting her own record label and is considering signing Gunnar and Scarlett (who is Deacon’s neice).  Finally Deacon decides that instead of just thinking about doing something, he will in fact just do it, and he kisses Rayna in the elevator.  Rayna texts him to come talk while in her room, and there is a knock on the door, and when she opens it, much to her shock, there stands Teddy.  He eventually comes in and tells her in the most shocking twist I did not see coming, he wants a divorce.  Stay tuned…this show just keeps on giving!

Switching to pop culture

Switching over to pop culture, a bit of I guess what you would call “celebrity gossip”, or new couple alert!  Don’t do this much but this happened to catch my eye.  Leighton Meester (Gossip Girl) and Adam Brody (The OC) are reportedly dating.  Kind of cute couple for sure.  I actually really like Adam Brody.  I really enjoyed him in a small movie called In The Land of Women which also starred Meg Ryan and Kristin Stewart.  Just thought I would share…check it out if you haven’t seen it, really interesting, thoughtful and poignant movie in a different sort of way.

Caught Letterman with Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco.  He is very low key kind of guy.  Just announced he and his wife were expecting their second child.  Also on Letterman the same evening, Gov. Christie of New Jersey.  Now that is a very impressive fellow, extremely funny and witty as well!
