How about those Braves!

Blockbuster trade announced involving the Atlanta Braves.  They have received Justin Upton (brother of outfielder BJ Upton) and Chris Johnson from Arizona in exchange for pitcher Randall Delgado and Martin Prado (say it ain’t so, hate to see Prado go!) along with three minor league players.  This trade reunites Justin with his brother who signed with the Braves as a free agent this past winter.  Quite an outfield the Braves will have with these two and Jason Heyward!

Another #1 bites the dust, again

Duke, after again reaching the #1 ranking in college basketball got thumped by Miami by 27 points last night in south Florida.  This was one of the worst performances by a Coach K Duke team one can remember.  In other action 9 Butler was upset in the final seconds by LaSalle, 54 – 53.  And, Georgia Tech fell to North Carolina in Chapel Hill, 79 – 63.  The Jackets are young and struggling and these defeats inevitably start to take their toll on their confidence.  Hope they can bounce back after playing the toughest teams in the ACC and grab a win at home against one of the lower tier ACC teams.

In the NBA, Lakers continue their awful slide, falling to the Grizzlies, 79 – 63.  Howard was injured and rumors swirl that he and Kobe “got into it” after the game.  Really?  Enough of this already!  Who cares?  Clearly Kobe and the and the Lakers are frustrated!! (and that is putting it mildly)

Semifinal results from down under

6 Li Na shocked 2 Sharapova in straight sets, 6 – 2, 6- 2 to advance to her second Australian Open final (lost to Kim Clijsters in her first).  Na outplayed Sharapova from start to finish, playing perhaps one of her most complete tennis matches ever.  I was pleased to see this result.

1 Azarenka took out the up and coming Sloane Stephens (fresh off of her huge upset win over an injured Serena Williams) 6 -1, 6-4.  Bit of controversy when serving at 5 -3 for the match, Azarenka called for a trainer and then left the court for ten minutes to deal with two different injuries.  She had squandered 5 match points prior to this and so now people will talk about the “timing” of this injury timeout.  At the end of the day, Azarenka won, was probably going to win regardless and yes, perhaps the injury timeout rule in tennis needs to be discussed and changed.  Do not think the end result of this match was in doubt to be honest.  So 1 Azarenka and 6 Li Na will face off for the Australian Open women’s title.  Azarenka must win to remain at #1 in the world.  If she loses, Serena Williams (currently at #3) will regain the #1 world ranking.

Mens’ semifinal action; Djokovic dismantled Ferrer 6 -2, 6 -2, 6-1.  Ferrer had come back from two sets down to win a grueling five set quarterfinal victory in his last outing.  No disrespect, but does anyone else miss Rafa?

Huge semifinal tonight (probably 3:30 am EST), 2 Roger Federer and 3 Andy Murray.  Rematch of Wimbledon final (Fed) and Gold Medal final (Murray).  I know you all know it, but I will say it just for good measure, I am pulling for Mr. Federer!

It is Wednesday, Surviving “Paradise” day!

It is that day of the week, Wednesday, so let me give my book Surviving “Paradise” a shout out!!  Buy it, read it, tell your friends about it!  Just spoke with someone today who was visiting the website and he commented that the book seemed like a great read, a great gift, a story that a lot of people would enjoy and could relate to, especially those who had ever endured a neighborhood “problem”.  He bought it!  It is available at Amazon.com for $9.99 in paperback and kindle edition for $3.03.

Early line on Super Bowl

Still a week and a half away, but early line on Super Bowl has San Francisco as 3.5 point favorite with 48 points as over/under.  Um…what do you think?  Is San Francisco the favorite or will Ray Lewis “farewell tour” result in Super Bowl victory for the Ravens?  I think it is going to be one heck of a game!  Not ready to make a pick  just yet…but leaning toward San Francisco.

Private Practice finale

Well, Private Practice has run its course.  The finale of this long running show aired last night and I guess in some ways, everybody got their “happily ever after”.  Addison wed Jake (Benjamin Bratt) and appeares to be blissfully happy with him and adopted son Henry.  Amelia appears to have fully rebounded from her addition battles and has not only found love, but more importantly has reclaimed her life back as well.  Charlotte, Cooper and four kids, one from his previous relationship and their three baby girl triplets are adapting, in some ways, Cooper says it is time for a nanny and Charlotte gives in.  Sheldon quits the practice to spend the remaining months left with his dying love, (cancer) and Violet writes another book that she wants to call “Private Practice”.  In perhaps the biggest surprise wrap up of all, Naomi returns for Addison’s wedding, hooks up with her ex, Sam, played by the wonderful Taye Diggs, and then returns pregnant.  Turns out she has broken up with her boyfriend and in a predictable but yet unforeseen ending, Sam and Naomi rewed with a baby on the way and we all assume they will head into happily ever after as well.  Farewell to this show, I really did enjoy it for a number of years.

Couple of ACC basketball games on tonight

Two interesting ACC Basketball games on tap for tonight.  1 Duke takes on Miami.  Miami is 4 -0 in ACC play and this should be an interesting test for both teams; Duke on the road.  Later, Georgia Tech takes on the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill, NC.  As a GT fan, I say “help”, can we win an ACC game, please?  Always tough on the road.

Speaking of “help”, the Lakers and all the drama surrounding them are in action tonight as well.  Reportedly they had a team meeting today after practice to iron out some “issues”.

Moving on to the I cannot imagine why, the New Orleans Hornets are changing their name to the Pelicans next year.  Like I said, Why?  The pelican is the state bird?  But still…

Me, well, ABC hit drama Nashville will probably be my first choice tonight, with others getting action from my remote going back and forth!!  Also, will by sure to DRV my gal pal Whitney’s talk show, Love You, Mean It/Whitney.

Federer survives tough five set match over Tsonga to advance

2 Roger Federer survived a tough five set match over 7 Tsonga down under, winning 7 – 6, 4 – 6, 7 – 6, 3 – 6, 6 -3.  He will move onto the semifinals to face 3 Andy Murray who easily defeated the unranked Chardy, 6 – 4, 6 – 1, 6 – 2.  Will be interesting to see if this tough three and a half hour match helps or hurts Federer as he moves on.  He will likely have to defeat both Murray, and then 1 Djokovic (who will face Ferrer in the other semifinal) to win the title and take home his 18th Grand Slam trophy.  Here’s to hoping he can get it done.  Still loving those snazzy shoes he is wearing and also Mirka is all smiles in his box, which cannot help but be a good sign!  GO FED!

Update:  Got a chance to see replay of the Fed-Tsonga match.  It was really intense, back and forth, full of drama.  Great, entertaining match.  Federer advances to his 33rd Grand Slam semifinal.  And yes, you guessed it, another record!

Movie Taken 2

Caught up with a former box office number one, Taken 2 starring Liam Neeson.  This was a sequel to the popular Taken.  Very fast paced, a lot of action in this movie.  His ex-wife is played by Franke Janssen and his daughter again played by Maggie Grace.  This go round, his daughter has to help save him and her mom when they are “taken” after he invites them to come visit him while on assignment.  Won’t give away the story.  Cute interaction between father and daughter over getting her driver’s license and over her boyfriend, Jamie.  Nice ending, outdoor dining in sunny LA after all the thrilling life and death action overseas in Istanbul, Turkey.  Song at the end says “come on out to LA, don’t knock it til you have tried it”.   Enjoyable movie to watch if you liked the first on (it is not too long)  and enjoy fast paced thrilling action.
