New #1 in Men’s College Basketball

With #1 Duke and #2 Michigan both suffering their first losses of the season this past weekend, we have a new #1 for now, Louisville.  The AP top ten is as follows: 1 Louisville, 2 Indiana (bet John Mellencamp is happy!), 3 Duke, 4 Kansas, 5 Michigan, 6 Syracuse, 7 Arizona, 8 Gonzaga, 9 Minnesota, and 10 Florida.

There you have it.  We will see how long this holds up and what changes occur by next week!

Dwight Howard returns for Lakers

Dwight Howard returns to action tonight to boost the struggling Lakers.   At the half, the Lakers lead Cleveland, 57 – 45.  I have said it before, I will say it again, do not declare the Lakers out of the playoffs yet!  Final tomorrow.

Australian Open News: American John Isner out with a knee injury.  Let’s get ready for a great two weeks of tennis.  Once again, sounding like a broken record, it is Roger Federer time!  I love Roger Federer time.

Djokovic in action now.  Venus and Sharapova win today.

Golden Globe Awards

Again, I am late to this party.  Was away, more on that tomorrow with pics I hope. DVR has been busy!  But at the end of the show, I am so happy to say Ben Affleck was the winner for Best Director for Argo.  YES, there is justice in this world!  What a huge injustice that he was snubbed by the Oscars.  I think I am sounding like a broken record.  But, he has now won the Critics Choice Award and now a Golden Globe.  Karma works in mysterious ways!  Never doubt that!

Best Actor – Comedy/Musical  Hugh Jackman for Les Miserables.

Best Actress – Jessica Chastain for Zero Dark Thirty.

Best Actor – Drama – Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln.

Best Picture – ARGO  (Thank you!!)

These are just the few I caught late.  No complaints with these results.  Will review results tomorrow and see if any more comments are required.  My primary source of joy is the acknowledgement of Ben Affleck for Argo!  Greatness was not denied.

Back tomorrow!  (With pics from entertainment event in Atlanta!)

New England and Tom Brady advance

OK, I am back and just want to catch up.  New England takes care of  Houston (again) with a definitive 41 – 29 dismantling  of the Texans.  So, I was not home (at an entertainment event in Atlanta, more on that later) but we now have the NFC and the AFC match ups set.  Atlanta will host San Francisco in Atlanta next weekend (Go Falcons!).  I was just downtown around the Georgia Dome, you should have seen the celebration and joy!  As for the AFC, New England will host Baltimore and the continuing Ray Lewis “farewell tour”.  Let’s see how this how settles.  Do we end up with a Harbaugh brothers match up in the Super Bowl?  Or do the Atlanta Falcons finally make it to the party?  Stay tuned…next weekend will be interesting!

Last undefeated college basketball team falls

There are no more “undefeated” in the world of college basketball!  15 Ohio State upsets 2 Michigan at home today, 56 – 53.  This comes on the heels of 1 Duke falling at 20 NC State yesterday.  No more unbeaten teams as of today!

In Atlanta, what was once a 20 point lead for the Falcons is now a 6 point lead with under five minutes in the 4th quarter.  Falcon fans are crossing their fingers, holding their breath, etc.  Falcons fail to convert on 3rd down to maintain control of the ball and now it goes back to Russell Wilson and Seattle.  Wilson has been outstanding, especially in the second half,  Seahawks have over 500 yards of offense.  Can the Falcons hang on and win their first playoff game under Mike Smith with Matty Ice at QB?  Stay tuned….hold your breath!

DVR going to get work out from me today!

Just a heads up for all of you wonderful people who are following me on this blog.  My DVR is going to get a work out today!  I will be watching the Falcons – Seattle game (Falcons currently up 20 – 0 in first half, way to go Falcons!), but will be leaving late this afternoon to attend a TV/Movie industry event here.  I am hoping to network, give out cards, perhaps even pass along a copy of my book Surviving “Paradise” to just the right contact!  So, I am going to have to play catch up on the New England – Houston game, the Golden Globe Awards, and the opening round of the Australian Open!  I will get caught up and hopefully have some cool pics to post to the blog in the next couple of days!

Big Saturday for the Harbaugh brothers!

What a Saturday for the Harbaugh brothers yesterday.  John Harbaugh, head coach of the Baltimore Ravens upset the highly favored Denver Broncos and Peyton in the cold snow of Denver.  Then, Jim Harbaugh and his San Francisco 49ers rolled over Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in Candlestick Park in San Francisco!  What a successful day for these two head coaches and brothers.  Ironically, depending on the results of next week’s action, we could have an all Harbaugh Super Bowl (reminiscent of an all Manning boys Super Bowl).  49ers QB Kaepernick was so impressive in the victory over Green Bay, 400 yards of total offense.

I still admit I am sad because I wanted Peyton Manning and the Broncos to win.  But this is a great story.

Now, we await the outcome of the two games today (Sunday).  Atlanta is up 10 – 0 on Seattle in the first half.  Come on Falcons!  We really need a playoff win.  Time to get the monkey off our backs!

Later, Houston visits New England.  I would expect New England to win.  However, I expected Denver and Green Bay to win yesterday, so what do I know?

In non football action today, the last remaining undefeated college basketball team in the nation, Michigan, travels to Ohio to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes.

A little warmer in the bay area

Out in San Francisco, the weather is a little warmer than in Denver!  San Francisco and Green Bay are tied for the fourth time in the game, 24 – 24 midway in the 3rd quarter.  Kaepernick has thrown a costly interception but has also hurt the Packers with his ability to escape the pocket and run the ball.  Winner of this game will play the winner of the Atlanta – Seattle game which takes place tomorrow.

In other news, Brian Kelly is going to stay at Notre Dame after flirting with the NFL.  He is in the process of negotiating what is sure to be a very “sweet” deal.

Update: Kaepernick just ran in for another TD, 163 yards on the ground so far.  He has passed for a nice bit of yardage as well.  Final on this game later…here it is: San Francisco 45 – Green Bay 31   (another surprising outcome)

Personally, I am looking forward to the Australian Open which gets underway down under Sunday and Monday.  Coverage will be on ESPN2.  It is ROGER FEDERER time…one of my favorite things!

Broncos and Peyton out of playoffs…

Baltimore will advance to the AFC title game with a double OT victory over Denver, 38 – 35.

It was 9 degrees at game time, then 6 degrees and snowing and still this was one heck of a fireball of a game!  Denver scored two special team TD’s, Peyton threw for three TD’s but two interceptions, the second one being very costly.  Running right in double OT and throwing across his body, Peyton was picked off by Corey Graham and that led to the game winning field goal by rookie Justin Tucker which will send the Baltimore Ravens to either New England or Houston (depending on the outcome of tomorrow’s game) for the AFC Championship game.

I admit I am sad.  I wanted Peyton and the Broncos to win this game.  Perhaps you could say the Denver defense had a major part in this defeat when they shockingly allowed the Ravens to score a tying TD in regulation with just over thirty seconds left in the game.  Denver was up 35 – 28 and appeared on their way to the AFC title game.  Such was not to be the case.  Tremendous effort by Baltimore, they kept fighting and would not give up.  The “farewell tour” for Raven’s defensive great Ray Lewis will go on,  Lewis had seventeen tackles in a superb performance.

No Manning boys in the title games or Super Bowl this year.  Oh well…

In the first half, Green Bay and San Francisco have battled to a 14 – 14 tie.  Much more action left in this game.  Much more action tomorrow.  My dream of a Denver – Atlanta Super Bowl dissipated in the cold and snow of Denver.  Maybe the Falcons can keep part of that dream alive.  We will find out tomorrow!
