Tragedy in Kansas City

This kind of story is never one you want to tell.  Twenty five year old Kansas City Chief’s LB Jovan Belcher has killed his girlfriend (and mother of their 3 month daughter) in a Kansas City neighborhood.  After this horrible act, he drove to the parking lot of Arrowhead Stadium and took his own life.  Some members of the Chief’s staff were present, and pleaded with him to not commit any more violence.  He thanked the Coach and General Manager for all that they had done for him, and then took his life.  His mother had been visiting with them and witnessed the earlier events.  What an awful story to have to report today.  The desperation and despair that led to this tragic loss of  life is incomprehensible.  A child is left without a mother and a father.  A tragedy, prayers and concerns go out to everyone close to them and hopes that this little girl will be taken care of by someone loving and protective!

College Football Championship weekend!!!

College GameDay is in the ATL for Championship weekend Saturday!  Matt Ryan, QB for the Atlanta Falcons, and former Boston College standout, was the guest picker.  “Matty Ice” picked GT to upset FSU in the ACC Championship Game!  I knew I had good taste in liking Matt Ryan!!

Early games feature 11 Oklahoma vs. TCU and 23 Oklahoma State vs. Baylor (destroyer of the hopes of Kansas State!)

At 4:00 pm EST is the BIG ONE!  2 Alabama vs. 3 UGA in the Georgia Dome for the SEC Championship and the right to play 1 Notre Dame for the National Championship.  It does not get any bigger that this one!

8:00 pm EST Conference Games are as follows:

12 Nebraska vs. Wisconsin, another rematch, for the Big Ten and date with Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

18 Texas vs. 6 Kansas State for the Big 12 Championship (depending on the outcome of Oklahoma vs. TCU) BCS berth in the Fiesta Bowl on the line.

Georgia vs. 13 FSU for the ACC Championship from Charlotte, NC and the Orange Bowl invitation.  GO JACKETS!

Back later today with updates on this super Saturday!!!

Stanford headed to the Rose Bowl!

Championship Weekend has begun and last night 8 Stanford in a repeat performance of last weekend, prevailed over a very talented 18 UCLA, 27 – 24.  On a very nasty, rainy night in Palo Alto, ULCA missed a potential game tying field goal with time running out and Stanford will represent the Pac 12 as Conference Champion in the Rose Bowl.  They await the winner of the 12 Nebraska – Wisconsin game (Big Ten).

Stanford continues to impress, they are the reason the Oregon Ducks are not in the National Championship hunt.  No shame there for the Ducks.  This is a talented, well coached, underrated and undervalued Stanford team.  Perhaps that is about to change!

What did Kobe do?

Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers had a nice win last night over the Denver Nuggets, 122 – 103.  Perhaps the best game they have played so far this season (with point guard Steve Nash still out with injury).  Howard looked good, so did Pau Gasol, and Jodie Meeks (former “one and done” standout at Kentucky) had a spectacular night shooting 3’s!  Kobe had 14 points, 86 more to go to reach the 30,000 career points milestone!

Georgia Tech is NOT going to the Big Ten???

ESPN alert claims the Atlanta Journal Constitution is reporting that Georgia Tech says there is no truth what so ever to the reports that they intend to join the Big Ten.  Where did this come from?  I have to say, I did not see this coming.

We got a game tonight, the ACC Championship vs. 13 FSU.  Right now, that is all I am focused on for the Jackets.  (Hope to get better news regarding the status of Orwin Smith).

Tiger is playing golf…and Championship Weekend is here!

The World Challenge Golf Tournament is underway in Sherman Oaks, California (ah…California!) and is hosted by Tiger Woods.  This tournament benefits his foundation, so thus Tiger is playing golf as December is upon us.  Graeme McDowell has a 3 shot lead at -9, Van Pelt, Bradley and Furyk are tied at -6, and Tiger is four off the lead at -5.

In other sports news, Gregg Popovich decided to leave his best players behind when he took the Spurs to Miami to play the final game of a six game road trip.  David Stern did not take kindly to this and has announced today a $250 thousand dollar fine for Coach Popovich and the Spurs.  Ouch!

Saving the best for last, Championship Weekend in College Football is upon us!!!  Tonight in a rain soaked Palo Alto, 8 Stanford is hosting 16 UCLA in a rematch of last weekend’s game (which Stanford won) to decide who wins the Pac 12 along with a BCS berth and a trip to the Rose Bowl.  Just after the half, they are all tied up 17 – 17.

Updates later and/or tomorrow…Big games to look forward to tomorrow, especially the showdown in the Georgia Dome, the SEC Championship game between 2 Alabama and 3 UGA for the right to play 1 Notre Dame in the BCS Championship!

Cannot wait!!!

Brad Pitt…

Brad Pitt.  Need I say more?  Brad Pitt graces the cover of this week’s People Magazine with his new movie, Killing Them Softly coming out today.  Critics have praised the movie, while citing it as being very dark and explicitly gruesome.  That is OK, I believe I will see it, Brad is worth it.  I also saw an interesting interview on Nightline with the rarely interviewed Mr. Pitt along with some of his co-stars, Tony Soprano himself (James Gandolfini) and Ray Liotta.  The movie was directed by Andrew Dominik who also directed Brad in the Assassination of Jesse James.  That movie bombed at the box office but won several awards for both Brad and Casey Affleck (little brother of Ben Affleck).  Mr. Pitt talked about wanting to do this movie, he stars and produces, and wanting to work with this director again.  The story is in his words, a definition of capitalism that does not feed off the back of others, following both his and Angelina’s intent to focus more often on issues, as opposed to politics.  Interesting that a collapsing economy and capitalism would be the themes of a movie about hit men and killing but it is apparently a very strong undercurrent in this film.  I look forward to seeing it (and Brad) and will follow up with a post when I do so!!

Remember I have a theory, one is either a beach person or a mountain person, you can like them both, but you are definitely one or the other (I choose the beach!).  In addition, one is either a Brad Pitt person or a George Clooney person; again, you can like them both, but you are a Brad or a George person (I pick Brad!)

This movie looks dark, entertaining and good!

Braves trade Tommy Hanson???

NO!!!  Just saw an ESPN scroll where the Braves have traded Tommy Hanson???  What is happening in the world?  This just cannot be true, but it is!!  On, no…Tommy is headed to the Angels and the Braves will get reliever Jordan Walden.  I guess “they” know what “they” are doing, but I am perplexed.  Tommy is no longer an Atlanta Brave, it just does not sound right!
