AP Poll out, Oregon #1 at last…for now

The AP Poll is out (Coaches Poll not yet out) and justice for Oregon at last.  The top ten are as follows: 1 Oregon, 2 Kansas State, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Alabama, 5 Georgia, 6 Ohio State, 7 Florida, 8 LSU, 9 Texas A & M, and 10 Florida State.  The two South Carolina schools finish at 11 Clemson and 12 South Carolina.

Oregon has two very tough games ahead of them, the first this upcoming weekend when Stanford comes to Eugene.  Nice to see the Ducks at #1 today, at least in this poll.

WTA Year End Tournament results: first semifinal is completed and Djokovic punched his way into tomorrow’s final with a three set win over Del Petr, 4 – 6, 6 – 3, 6 – 2.  Federer and Murray will face off a little later this afternoon.

Sunday morning catch-up…

Happy Veterans Day!

Late night College Football did not produce any more upsets.  4 Notre Dame defeated Boston College, 21 – 6;  18 UCLA prevailed over Washington State, 44 – 26; and 3 Oregon rolled behind 6 touchdown passes by freshman QB Mariota to fend off California 59 – 17.  The game was surprisingly tight until mid 3rd quarter.  Will be interesting to await the rankings throughout today and tonight!

Full slate of NFL action today!  Undefeated Atlanta Falcons travel to New Orleans to take on rival Saints who are struggling.  This is a game that can always be hard fought and contentious.  The Manning brothers are also in action early today, Peyton and the Broncos will take on Carolina and the Panthers led by Cam Newton; Eli and the Giants will visit the Bengals in Cincinnati.

Sunday Night Football offers a very good game, Houston (7-1) vs. Chicago(7-1).  Both these teams are playing great football, some even think the Bears are the best team in the NFL right now.  (Disrespectful to the Atlanta Falcons, since they are currently the only undefeated team!!)  Still, season is at half way point, so a long…..way to go!

MNF features Kansas City at Pittsburgh. (Maybe not so good?)

A lot going on today.  College Polls, ATP Year End Tour semifinals, and all the NFL action!

Back later…

Here’s a few more…

5 UGA rolled over Auburn, 38 – 0 and clinches SEC East and trip to Atlanta for SEC Championship game.  7 LSU rebounded from last weeks disappointing loss to Alabama by taking care of 21 Miss State, 37 – 17.  Finally, 2 Kansas State took care of TCU, 23 – 10.  It was not Collin Klein’s best performance and Kansas State had two turnovers after only turning the ball over four times in their first nine games.  Never the less, they are 10 – 0 and may be poised to move to number 1 in tomorrow’s polls, at least for now.

4 Notre Dame appears on its way to remaining undefeated, leading Boston College 21 – 3 late in the 3rd quarter.

3 Oregon at California is just getting underway.  Also, 18 UCLA is facing off at Washington State.

Final wrap up tomorrow!!!

Is the “Zen Master” returning to LA

Brief break from college football, reports indicate Phil Jackson is in serious talks with Lakers management to return to coach the team.  He has been talking to potential assistant coaches the past couple of days and all signs indicate his return is imminent.  It is reported he has told owner Jim Buss that they will talk again in a couple of days.  He likes this LA Lakers team.  Welcome back Phil Jackson????  Sure will make Kobe happy!

Welcome to Tuscaloosa and the SEC Texas A & M!!!

Shock waves in College Football late this afternoon, 15 Texas A & M upsets 1 Alabama 29 – 24.  No A J to T J this week.  I was a week early in my upset prediction.  A J McCarron had two interceptions and T J Yeldon fumbled as Johnny “Football” Manziel and the Aggies shocked the football world.  Manziel had over 300 yards of offense and the Aggies had a goal line stand along with the second interception of McCarron as Bama was driving for a game winning TD and Alabama is undefeated no more.  They can still win the SEC west, but their hopes of a shot at a second national championship are dim.  Notre Dame, Oregon and Kansas State would need to lose a game for that to likely happen.  This is probably not going to be the year that a one loss SEC team will surpass an unbeaten to get into the BCS Championship.  Tremendous performance by Texas A & M, and is freshman sensation Johnny Manziel now in the Heisman talk???

In other action, 19 USC rebounds to bury Arizona State University 33 – 17; 16 Nebraska comes from behind to defeat Penn State 32 – 23; 13 Clemson rolls over Maryland, 45 – 10, although Sammy Watkins did leave in the 3rd quarter with an injury; 12 Oklahoma prevailed over Baylor 42 -34; and in the other big late afternoon game, 14 Stanford defeated 11 Oregon State, 27 -23.  This sets up a huge game next weekend as Stanford will travel to Eugene to take on 3 Oregon.

Currently in action: 5 UGA at Auburn, 2 Kansas State at TCU ( and Collin Klein is playing), and 21 Miss State at 7 LSU.

At 8:00 pm EST, 4 Notre Dame takes on Boston College.  10:30 pm EST, 3 Oregon plays at California and 18 UCLA will face Washington State.

It has been quite a day, and it is not over yet!!!

College Football report…early games

Let’s start with Georgia Tech at North Carolina.  First of all, it is never a complement for a team to select you as their homecoming date.  North Carolina should have invited another “date”.  Georgia Tech wins 68 – 50 in what was a coming out party of sorts for redshirt freshman quarterback, Vad Lee.  Tevin started the game (and I would expect he will continue to do so in the two remaining games) and did no wrong.  But Vad Lee is special, he is going to be truly special!!  There was no defense in this game as between both teams, almost 1000 yards of total offense was amassed.  Another standout for GT was Robert Godhigh, all 5 feet 7 inches of him, a former walk on and now a junior.  The stats are not huge, but he went up and made a TD catch that is deserving of ESPN highlight reels this week.  Believe it or not, this win, combined with the upset of Miami at the hands of Virginia, 41 – 40, puts GT in a three way tie for the lead in the Coastal Division of the ACC along with Duke (yes, Duke, next week’s opponent) and Miami.  All three control their own destiny.  GT executed better in extra point conversions and field goals this week thanks to new kicker Tanner but the kick off coverage was somewhat suspect.  What a huge victory for GT.  Defense has a ways to go, but this offense is clicking!!  (They almost look like Oregon!!)  GO JACKETS!

In other games, some more upsets, and some near upsets!  6 Florida survived an upset at the hands of Louisiana-Lafayette (who?) thanks to a blocked punt returned for a TD with two (count them, two!) seconds left.  Syracuse pounded 9 Louisville, 45 – 26 so good bye top ten for Louisville.  Michigan upset 24 Northwestern in OT, 38 – 31.  22 Texas Tech avoided an upset by defeating Kansas (really?) in OT, 41 – 34.   23 Rutgers defeated Army, 28 – 7 and 17 Texas easily handled Iowa, 33 – 7.  Also, 8 South Carolina had little trouble with Arkansas, winning 38 – 20.  In a heart breaker, Tennessee fell to Missouri in 4 OT’s, 51 – 48, and remains winless in the SEC.

Now, 14 Texas A & M is up on 1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa, 20 – 0 in the 1st quarter.  14 Stanford leads 11 Oregon State 14 – 10.  These and other big games are just getting started so stay tuned…there is more to come!!
