Friday sports update…

In College Football action, U Conn defeated Pittsburgh 24 – 17.

At Ramstein AFB in Germany, a bit of an upset as U Conn defeated 14 Michigan State in hoops 66 – 62.

3 Kentucky, and their latest edition of “one and done” players escaped Maryland, 72 – 69.

Finally, at the grand unveiling of the McCamish Pavilion, formerly the “thriller dome” at Georgia Tech, the Jackets defeated Tulane, 79 – 61.  Here’s to hoping for a better year in round ball for the Jackets!!

Update: Marcus Lattimore, injured star RB for South Carolina, will not be in attendance at Saturday’s game vs. Arkansas as previously reported.

Who will be ATP Player of the Year?

Today in London, 1 Djokovic defeated 5 Berdych 6 -2, 7 – 6.  Later today, 3 Murray will face 7 Tsonga as round robin play continues leading to Sunday’s semifinal action.

With Djokovic having clinched the year end #1 ranking, it begs the question who will be named Player of the Year and how much will the results of this year end event affect that choice?

The obvious candidates are 1 Djokovic, 2 Federer, and 3 Murray.  One could make a good argument for all three.  Djokovic has been the most consistent throughout the year.  What Fed accomplished by winning Wimbledon and regaining the #1 ranking for four months defied all the doubters that at 31, he could no longer be “King Roger”.  Murray had a break through year, playing his way into the final at Wimbledon and then returning a couple of weeks later to claim the gold medal on the grass lawns.  He then followed that with his first major, winning the US Open.  I would love to give it to Roger (because I am a Fed fanatic), but I think the honor likely belongs to Andy Murray.

Two stories out of LA…

More rumblings coming out of LA regarding the future of Lakers head coach Mike Brown.  There is some speculation that should the Lakers not prevail in their upcoming homestand, he could in fact be gone??  Clearly, there is a lot of frustration surrounding the poor start the new look Lakers have gotten off to, but would he really be relieved of his duties this early in the season?? If so, who will replace him??  Stay tuned…

Funny story was going around the sports shows yesterday regarding USC and the actions of a student manager last weekend in their game vs. Oregon.  Apparently, this student manager saw fit to “underinflate” the footballs in some sort of misguided attempt to give USC an advantage.  The school has been fined $25k and the student manager has been fired.  My oh my, wonders never cease!  Moreover, it clearly did not slow down the “quack attack”!!

Thursday night results…

10 FSU escaped Virginia Tech and the curse of Thursday night in Lane Stadium, 28 – 22.  The Noles survived on the basis of a late game winning TD drive.  While E J Manuel had a successful night passing, 300+ yards, FSU was held to -15 yards rushing.  The game was marred by five turnovers, 3 by VT and 2 by FSU.  Never the less, just like last week for Alabama in Baton Rouge, FSU managed a late game winning TD drive (breaking the hearts of Clemson fans everywhere!)

NFL action, Andrew Luck scored two rushing TD’s and led the Colts to a 27 – 10 victory over Jacksonville.  (The Jaguars are just not a very good team right now, unfortunately).

On tap for tonight, College Football will offer Pittsburgh (almost upset Notre Dame last weekend) at U Conn (ESPN2).  Also, with College Hoops getting underway, Michigan State will square off against U Conn from Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany.  Should be great entertainment for all of our troops stationed there!!  This will be on ESPN beginning at 5:30 pm EST.

More tennis, and other…

From ATP Year End in London: Del Potro defeats Tipsarevic 6 – 0, 6 -4.

Also, more news regarding the decommitment of top high school recruit, Robert Nkemidche.  He is looking at UGA, Alabama and Ole Miss.  Important to note that his older brother plays for Ole Miss and his mom would really like to see her boys play together.  It will be interesting to see how this development plays out…

College Game Day this Saturday will broadcast from the USS San Diego.  Very cool!!

I don’t think I like Teddy…

After watching the new ABC hit drama, Nashville, my feelings about Rayna’s husband, Teddy, have been confirmed.  I don’t like him and I don’t trust him.  After all, anyone who would get in bed with that snake of a father-in-law has some serious integrity issues.  It would appear the Teddy “secret” involving the character played by Kimberly Williams-Paisley has more to do with some unscrupulous business dealings as opposed to “romantic ones”.  At least, so far.  I also think that in spite of his past addiction problems, the character of Deacon Claybourne is a “good guy”.  I am waiting to see what develops in this series as far as Deacon and Rayna, their past professional and personal relationship, and also how things will play out as Teddy runs for mayor with the backing of Rayna’s dangerous, powerful and manipulative father.

This show is a keeper!!

Some College Football news…

It appears that with Matt Barkley (senior QB) falling off the map as far as the Heisman race, USC would now like to throw standout sophomore WR Marqise Lee into the mix.  The school just released a video campaign on his behalf.  He is the top receiver in the country (88 catches), is second in receiving yards, and leads the Pac-12 with 12 receptions for a touchdown.  He has also been a force on special teams.  OK, still say Kenyon Barner (Oregon) is the guy but we shall see, Collin Klein is not out of it yet.

There was an interview in an Arkansas newspaper with Bobby Petrino’s father which indicated that Bobby would be interested in the Kentucky coaching  job (it has been confirmed that Joker Phillips will not be retained after this season).  WOW, really!  While Bobby Petrino will inevitably crop up somewhere (heaven help them, whoever they may be), it seems very unlikely he will resurface in the SEC.

And now for some inspiring news, Coach Steve Spurrier has said that he expects  injured star RB Marcus Lattimore to be in attendance this weekend for South Carolina’s home game against Arkansas.  I know his attendance will bring a huge response from the fans and hopefully be an uplifting  presence for his teammates.  Continue to hope he can recover and be back in football next year!!

Reminder for tonight’s games:  10 FSU at Virginia Tech.

And that other football game, the professionals, Thursday night football offers Andrew Luck and the Colts visiting the Jacksonville Jaguars.

While Luck is fun to watch, the FSU vs. VT game should be more interesting.
