Will Kobe play?

NBA kicks off tonight and one of the big questions is will Kobe play??  Yes, Kobe will play.  He did not practice Monday, he is listed as a “game-time” decision, and he has said he is 85% sure he will play.  Kobe will play!!!  First game will feature a rematch of the 2012 Eastern Conference finals as Boston travels to face LeBron and Miami, and oh yeah, their old teammate Ray Allen!  The second game will feature the new look Lakers, with Steve Nash and Dwight Howard joining Kobe, Pau, World Peace, et al  hosting the Dallas Mavericks.  Hard to imagine but it is “round ball” time already!

Monday night update…

On ESPN, the Arizona Cardinals, still without starting QB Kevin Kolb are no match for the 49ers, losing 24 – 3.  Too much Alex Smith, Michael Crabtree, 49er defense, and a little Randy Moss thrown in for good measure.

Tennis news:  Paris Masters 1000 event gets underway without world no. 1 Roger Federer.  Federer won the title in Paris last year and will not defend those points.  This comes on the heels of his hometown defeat in Basel to Del Potro, 4 – 6, 7 – 6, 6 – 7, failing to defend that title as well, much to the disappointment of the Swiss crowd (and me).  However, the decision to rest and prepare for the Year End Event in London which will begin Nov. 5th is a wise one for Fed.  Remember, he is 31 and wants to be at his best for this year end tournament, a title he has won six out of the past nine years.  Taking some time to get himself ready will hopefully enable us to see Fed at his best as he attempts to hold off Djokovic and end the year ranked no. 1 in the world.  I hope he pulls it off!

Bit of TV news:  Anderson Live with Anderson Cooper will not make the cut.  It was announced the show would be canceled, probably by next spring or summer.  Low ratings were given as the reason.  I sort of enjoy a different side of Anderson.

Until tomorrow…

Monday morsels…

It’s Monday!!  OK, what have we got for a Monday??  How about Rory Mcilroy beats Tiger Woods by 1 stroke in an 18 hole exhibition in China.  They have both agreed they would like to do this sort of event again.  Good for them as is it is good for the sport of golf.  They actually get along, people, they like each other, they really do!  (Not to mention the mutual professional respect).

ACC News: Maryland has lost their fourth starting QB this season and has announced that they will start a former linebacker at QB this weekend in their home game against Georgia Tech.  Maybe Georgia Tech can win this game?

MNF will feature the 5 – 2 San Francisco 49ers and their highly regarded defense at the 4 – 3 Arizona Cardinals.

Apologies to everyone, I neglected to mention the upset this past Saturday in College Football; Washington upended previously no. 7 Oregon State 20 – 17.  My bad!!  It happens (it was past my bedtime).

Back later with MNF results!

Latest BCS poll and Oregon disrespected!

Latest BCS poll is out and once again, Oregon gets no respect.  1 Alabama, 2 Kansas State, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Oregon (come on!!), 5 LSU, 6 UGA, 7 Florida, 8 South Carolina, 9 FSU, and 10 Louisville.  Nice to see Big East get represented with undefeated Louisville.  Keep on winning Oregon and thing should work themselves out.  Winning is hard to argue with. (Hopefully the computer polls will be able to understand that!)

Eli does it again! Peyton putting on a show!!

For the 25 time, Eli Manning has led his team to a come from behind win in the 4th quarter.  The Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys 29 – 24 after losing a 23 point lead.  Once again, Eli took the Giants down the field in the late stages of the 4th quarter to score the go ahead touchdown.  The Cowboys, overcoming three first half turnovers, had stormed back and with 44 seconds left, appeared to have once again taken the lead with Romo’s pass to Dez White in the back of the end zone.  The play was ruled a TD on the field but after review, it was clear Bryant’s hand touched out of bounds.  So Eli and the Giants prevail and keep their perfect winning record in Texas Stadium against the Cowboys.  Not a good thing when one of your arch rivals has never lost to you on your home field!!

Meanwhile in Denver, big brother Peyton Manning is having a huge night against the Saints defense.  They lead 24 – 7 in the third quarter, with Manning already having passed for 255 yards, ie. putting on a typical Peyton clinic.  Hold that thought, another pass to Thomas (who has blossomed under the tutelage of the great Peyton) and they are on the verge of another score!  End of the third quarter with Denver looking at first and goal on the 4 yard line.

Another noteworthy performer in this game, Willis McGahee at running back.  This is especially significant given the horrific injury suffered by the hugely talented running back Marcus Lattimore of South Carolina this past Saturday.  Willis McGahee suffered a similar injury in 2003 (see earlier post) and it is good to see he is succeeding at this level.  Gives one hope for the recovery and comeback of Lattimore.

2nd and goal – TD pass to Decker!!  Broncos 31 – Saints 7.  These Broncos are getting good!!!  More to come…Peyton has now thrown for 280 yards!

Game over in Denver, Broncos win 34 – 14.  Peyton passes for 305 yards with 3 touchdowns.  McGahee rushes for 122 yards on 23 carries with one TD.  Vintage Peyton Manning!!

Let’s hear it for the Falcons!!

The Atlanta Falcons remain undefeated, (the only undefeated NFL team) as they took it to the Eagles in Philadelphia (and the rains thanks to the hurricane’s untimely arrival) winning 30-17.  Matt Ryan (MVP?) passed for 262 yards and 3 touchdowns.  There was an interesting and warm moment after the game when both Coach Mike Smith and Falcon’s owner Arthur Blank embraced former Atlanta QB and current Eagle QB Micheal Vick.  Classy acts on the part of both Smith and Blank.

Other NFL action today: Detroit over Seattle 28 – 24; Pittsburgh (in their awful stripped uniforms??) over the Redskins, 27-12; Green Bay over Jacksonville 24 – 25; Chicago over Carolina 23 – 22 thanks to a game winning field goal with time running out; and Andrew Luck and the Colts defeated the Titans in OT 19 – 13.  Also, in a snoozer, San Diego beat Cleveland 7 – 6.

This afternoon’s action features Eli Manning (with the great hair, thanks to the perm) leading the Giants into big “D” to take on Tony Romo and the Dallas Cowboys.  Just before halftime, the Giants lead 23 – 10.  Dallas has had three turnovers in the first half, all of them interceptions thrown by Romo.

On Sunday Night Football, big brother Peyton is in action as Drew Brees and the Saints will visit Denver to take on the Broncos.

Also, World Series game 4 is tonight!  Giants lead 3-0 and can win it all tonight!!  Stay tuned…

Latest College Football Polls…

The newest AP and USA Today Coaches Polls are out!  The AP top five are: 1 Alabama, 2 Oregon (yes!), 3 Kansas State, 4 Notre Dame, and 5 LSU.  Rounding out the top ten are 6 Ohio State (they cannot be ranked in BCS or Coaches poll due to NCAA penalties), 7 UGA, 8 Florida, 9 FSU and 10 Clemson.  (South Carolina comes in at #11).

The Coaches Poll top five are: 1 Alabama, 2 Oregon(thank you), 3 Kansas State, 4 Notre Dame, and 5 LSU.  This is identical to the AP Poll.  The rest of top ten differ since Ohio State is omitted. 6 UGA, 7 FSU, 8 Florida, 9 Clemson, and 10 Louisville.  Interestingly, South Carolina also comes in at no. 11 in this poll.

BCS poll will not be out until later this evening.

Sad news regarding the injury to Marcus Lattimore.  Reports indicate the hit he took to his left knee by the helmet of Tennessee defender resulted in damage to ACL, PCL, and MCL.  This is a devastating injury, reminiscent of the one sustained by Willis McGahee in the 2003 Bowl game when he played college football for Miami.  Will remain to be seen what the prognosis will be for Lattimore returning to play football for South Carolina and beyond.  Hope he can as by all accounts, he is a well respected and much beloved young man in addition to being an exceptional talent!

Fed loses final in hometown…

For all of us Roger Federer fans, disappointing day.  I guess a bad weekend is a bad weekend (GT loses, Dawgs win, Fed loses).  Roger lost in three sets to Del Potro at the Swiss Indoor Championships 4-6, 7-6, 6-7.  Credit to Del Potro who played a tremendous match to upset Federer in Basel, Switzerland.  Federer did not seem to playing at his highest level and it cost him in the third set tiebreaker.  (Noteworthy fact: Roger Federer has the best tie break record in the history of the sport).  Not today for Fed as he had way to many unforced errors and he has indeed announced he will pull out of next week’s Paris Masters 1000 Championship to rest up for the ATP Year End Final in London (play begins there November 5th).  Here’s to hoping Roger can be at his best for the final event of the year and finish as no. 1 in the world!

In Istanbul, Turkey, the Women’s Year End final was won by Serena Williams.  She steamrolled Sharapova, 6-4, 6-3, and even though she will finish the year ranked no. 3, when she is playing her best tennis, Serena is clearly the best women’s player in the world!
