Saturday wrap up…

Notre Dame is truly relevant again.  5 Notre Dame took care of business in Oklahoma, winning 30- 13 over the 8th ranked Sooners.  The BCS poll tomorrow evening will be interesting.  Meanwhile 1 Alabama is totally dominating 11 Mississippi State 38 – 7  in the 4th qtr.  Elsewhere, Washington is trying to pull off the upset over 7 Oregon State as they lead 10-0.

World Series:  It is the Giants again.  San Francisco wins 2-0 over Detroit to take a 3-0 lead.  These Giants are amazing!  Again, Congrats to my beach buddy Paul, scout for the Giants (see my book Surviving “Paradise”!!)

Exciting action in store for tomorrow (NFL, Tennis, World Series!)  Until then…over and out!

College Football today…

College Football kicked off today on a very sad note, South Carolina’s running back extraordinaire Marcus Lattimore was injured in a gruesome manner, those who are faint of heart should not watch the replay.  He took a helmet hit low on his leg which apparently has blown out his right knee.  The reports are not conclusive yet but it was clear, this was a horrific and serious injury.  This is the other knee, not the left knee he injured last year which cut his brilliant season short.  He spent the off season rehabbing and working so hard to get back to form, then to go down like this today.  Just a tragedy for this young man and his teammates.  South Carolina did prevail over Tennessee 38-35 but the story was the loss of Marcus Lattimore.

Mid afternoon games were some of the biggest of today.  12 FSU had no trouble with Duke, winning handily 48-7.  I thought there might be a bit more to this game but clearly I was wrong.  Arizona upset 9 USC 39-36 so the Trojans are officially out of any BCS comeback hope.  3 Kansas State hammered 14 Texas Tech 55-24 and Collin Klein continued his drive to the Heisman with 4 touchdowns.  In the big SEC game this afternoon, 10 UGA beat 2 Florida in Jacksonville (you know, the outdoor cocktail party), thanks to six turnovers.  UGA took control of the SEC East with a 17-9 victory over the previously undefeated Gators.  I would love to have been able to say one of my favorite lines, “too bad, so sad, how ’bout them dawgs”.  Not today!!  Dawgs win.  Then there is that team out west, 4 Oregon, the one that seems to get no respect from the BCS.  Well, they blew out Colorado, 70-14.  Take note people,  Oregon is REALLY good!  Would have to expect Kansas State to move up to no. 2 in the new BCS poll out on Sunday and Oregon to move up to no. 3.  Will have to wait and see what happens tonight in Norman, Oklahoma.  Right now, Notre Dame is leading 10-6 in the 3rd quarter.

In other action, 1 Alabama leads 11 Mississippi State 21-0 in the 2nd quarter.

World Series update: from Motown, San Francisco leads Detroit 2-0 in the 6th inning.

Sad day at Grant Field!

It was a sad day at Grant Field for GT’s homecoming game against BYU.  Georgia Tech lost 41-17 and there is not a lot one can say except that it was awful if you are a Tech fan!  They had a blocked punt, missed field goal, so many missed tackles that you lost count, and well, all in all, just a bad, bad day.  There was a 96 yard kick off return for a TD.  There was the occasional pressure on the BYU quarterback, one which led to an interception for a TD.  Still, it was a troubling and emphatic loss.  Tevin Washington never got it going for Tech on offense.  Vad Lee finally appeared in the second half and did lead them down the field (with the aid of some penalties) but then they had to settle for a field goal.  I will post pic, it was the only bright spot of the day, me and two old friends!!

Butter on demand…

Watched the movie Butter on demand.  Very enjoyable movie, kind of a dark comedy with a stellar cast.  The movie is about a butter carving contest at the state fair which is apparently HUGE in the Midwest, in fact more people attend this event than attend the Super Bowl.  The movie stars Jennifer Garner, Ty Burrell (of Modern Family), Hugh Jackman, Olivia Wilde, and an amazing young actress in the role of “Destiny”!  Great performances and cute story with feel good ending!

Early Saturday sports news…

On Friday night, 16 Louisville survived a scare from Cincinnati winning in OT, 34-31.

In Turkey, the semi finals of the Women’s Year End are completed.  Serena Williams easily defeated Radwanska 6-2, 6-1.  The other semi final featured 1 Azarenka and 2 Sharapova (battle of the screamers), and in this one, Sharapova got the better of the world no. 1, 6-2, 6-1.  A decisive win for Sharapova but Azarenka raised her index finger as she left the court, perhaps to remind “everyone” she is the year end no. 1!  Does not seem to be a lot off warm fuzzy feelings between these two.  Sharapova will get to battle Serena tomorrow in the final and she has not taken a set from S. Williams since 2008.  Will be a tough task for her tomorrow!

In the Swiss Indoors (don’t read if you do not want to know, as it will be on later today via tape delay!), Del Potro advances by beating R. Gasquet of France, 6-2, 6-2.  Roger Federer is currently playing P. Mathieu, also of France, and he won the first set 7-5 and they are on serve in set #2. (Update, Fed wins second set 6-4 and will play Del Potro in final tomorrow!)

Stay tuned!

Women’s tennis year end update…

In Turkey, the Women’s Year End Final rolled on…

Sharapova defeated Stosur 6-0, 6–3; Radwanska defeated Errani 6-7, 7-5, 6-4; and Azarenka secured the year end no. 1 ranking with a victory over Li Na 7-6, 6-2.  Serena Williams will finish the year ranked at no. 3.  There is still more to come in the round robin event from Istanbul but the no. 1 ranking has been settled.  (Sharapova also had a shot at the year end no. 1 ranking but Azarenka took care of business today, so it belongs to her)!!  Congrats!

In Basel, Roger Federer defeated B. Paire of France, 6-2, 6-2 with a particularly strong display of his serving excellence.  Still will remain to be seen whether Roger competes in Paris next week.   If he goes on to win in Basel, would not be shocked to see him take a break, in spite of relinquishing the no. 1 ranking to Djokovic in doing so, and prepare himself mentally, emotionally and physically to finish strong in London!  (Hopefully he will end the year at no. 1!!!!)  I am pulling for that!!

In golf, Tiger is tied for 5th place at the event in Malaysia.

Tigers roar, well one does, the other not so much

Clemson ran all over Wake Forest, or passed them silly is perhaps a better description, winning 42-13 as predicted.  Tajh Boyd, Clemson QB passed for 428 yards and had 5 touchdowns.

The other Tigers, the Detroit Tigers are in danger of going down 2-0 in the World Series.  They trail the Giants 2-0 in the bottom of the 8th.

NFL Thursday night game: Tampa Bay Bucs appear on their way to their first road win at Minnesota, leading 30-17 at the end of the 3rd quarter.

Finals later…

It is over in San Francisco, Giants win 2-0 and take 2-0 lead in World Series.  The series heads back to Motown for Saturday night game 3.  Detroit better find some of that hitting power, this is after all the team that swept the Yankees.  How about the Giants!
