Falcons are 6-0!!!

The Atlanta Falcons are 6-0 for the first time in history, courtesy of a 55 yard field goal by Matt Bryant with time running out!  They survived the Oakland Raiders 23-20 not really playing their best football.  That is what happens when you are good, you find a way to win when things are not going as well as you would like.  GO FALCONS!!  As our old friend Don Meredith used to say, “Turn out the lights, the party’s over”!  Or as my friend Chris Rains (computer guy extraordinaire) says, “It’s closing time, you don’t have to go home but you can’t stay here”!

Good game on this afternoon between New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers.  Also, Game 2 of ALCS with New York Yankees (minus Jeter) and Detroit Tigers.

Celebrity split news…

The latest celebrity couple to bite the dust appears to be Russell Crowe and his wife of nine year, Danielle Spencer.  They have two sons, ages 8 and 6.  The main reason given is the time spent apart due to his busy filming schedule.  Sad.  He really seemed to have “mellowed” a bit after settling down with her and having a family.  I think Meg Ryan is happy with John Mellencamp now. (my bad!)

Yankees lose more than game 1…

The New York Yankees lost game one of the ALCS 6-4 to Detroit Tigers.  But, they also lost their captain, Derek Jeter for the rest of the playoffs.  Jeter fractured his left ankle when he dove at a grounder up the middle just after the Tigers had made their go ahead run.  Approximately a three month recovery predicted for Jeter.  Will see how the Yankees recover from his loss as the series goes one.

NLCS game one between San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals get underway tonight.

NFL action on today.  I will be watching the Oakland Raiders visit the Atlanta Falcons.  Hoping and predicting the Falcons stay undefeated!!  Monday night, Peyton is on, as he and Denver will face-off against Philip Rivers and San Diego.

Sunday night NFL game features Green Bay at 5-0 Houston.

The Good Wife is on tonight, too! (Oh well, the that’s what the remote is for, I think we’re both up to the challenge!!)

It’s hard to win in Baton Rouge…

Another quick exit from the top five as South Carolina falls to LSU 23-21 in a thriller that went down to the wire.  The Tigers posses the nation’s longest home winning streak, and it is now at 23.  LSU is hard to beat in Death Valley, their defense really stymied the South Carolina offense and when Connor Shaw finally made a mistake with a poor throw for an interception, LSU pounced.  Still the Gamecocks made it interesting until the end.  They will travel to Gainesville  to face 3 Florida next week in what will be a hugely important game for them and also in determining who will eventually come out on top of the SEC East.

In other college football action, 8 Ohio State appears to be on its way to a win over Indiana and 19 Mississippi State is just holding off Tennessee at the end of 3 quarters.

First BCS poll comes out tomorrow!

Game 1 of ALCS: Detroit 4 – Yankees 4 in bottom of the 10th.

That’s all for tonight folks!!

A couple of upsets and a “hail mary”?

Notre Dame must really be special, or blessed, or something?  They beat Stanford 20-14 in OT in the pouring rain in South Bend.  Or did they??  There was some controversy at the end as to whether the Stanford tailback did in fact twist and turn and reach the ball across the end zone on 4th and goal in their OT possession.  The ruling was no TD, review said the call on the field stands, and 7 Notre Dame remains undefeated.  Watch the replay, and decide for yourself.  It was a great game.

A couple of shocking upsets this Saturday.  13 Oklahoma just walloped 15 Texas in Dallas 63-21.  The newest member of the top five, 5 West Virginia will be exiting the top 5 after today, losing to unranked Texas Tech 49-14; hope they enjoyed it while it lasted.  In more predictable fashion, Virginia Tech defeated Duke  41-20 after falling behind early; North Carolina won a close one over Miami 18-14; 1 Alabama took care of Missouri 42-10;  6 Kansas State survived Iowa State 27-21; Iowa beat Michigan State in OT 19-16; and 10 Oregon State took care of BYU 42-24.

Florida is up on Vandy 31-17, USC leads Washington 24-14, FSU is taking it’s frustration out on Boston College 51-7 and in the BIG one, South Carolina leads LSU 7-3 early in Death Valley.  Second half update, South Carolina up 14-10 with LSU driving.

It’s the Cardinals!!

St. Louis Cardinals scored 4 runs in the 9th inning to eliminate the Washington Nationals and will face the San Francisco Giants in the National League Championship Series.  This was the largest comeback in a post season winner take all game.  Interesting to note: all four of the division series went to the max, 5 games!

NO FED in Shanghai Masters final.  I am not happy!  Fed lost to Andy Murray 6-4, 6-4 and he looked very sluggish in doing so.  Earlier, Djokovic took care of Berdych, 6-3,6-4, so he will face Murray in tomorrow’s championship match.  The next event is the Paris Masters and then it is onto London for the Year End Finals. (Federer will play his hometown tournament in Basel, Switzerland as well).  Hope Roger can perform better in Paris and London.  He has a lot of points to defend at these two final events in order to hold onto the number 1 ranking.

Are we ready for some football?  Today’s marque games are Notre Dame hosting Stanford (two highly regarded academic institutions) and a great SEC match up with South Carolina visiting Baton Rouge to take on LSU.  This is a battle between two interesting personalities as far as respective coaches;  the old ball coach, Spurrier, wearer of the visor, and the mad hatter, Les Miles, wearer of the hat!!  Looking forward to both of these games.

And the Yankees win…

The New York Yankees are back in the American League Championship series after defeating the Orioles 3-1 (with A Rod benched?)!  They will face off against the Detroit Tigers.  We now await the winner of tonight’s game between Washington and St. Louis to see who will face the San Francisco Giants in the National League Championship series!

After seeing the movie Argo, (again, this movie is a must see as Ben Affleck has truly cemented himself as one of Hollywood’s most talented directors), I want to mention another movie that is coming out November 2nd, Flight!  This movie stars Denzel Washington who is always fantastic.  It also stars among others, Don Cheadle, a not talked about enough but superb actor and human being!  It is a bit of a miracle landing on the Hudson River story with a twist!!  Looks really good.

Go see Argo.  People will be talking about this movie when Oscar nominations come out!!

Tomorrow, College Football and Roger Federer vs. Andy Murray!!

Go see Argo!!

Argo is a must see movie!  This movies is REALLY good.  It has everything in it, history, human interest and drama, feel good triumph, self deprecating humor aimed at Hollywood, edge of your seat suspense,  it has it all.  Ben Affleck directed, stars, and also produced along with George Clooney.  I teared up on a couple of occasions, as well as found myself clenching my fists and grabbing the seat.  It is well done in every aspect, a real worth your time and money movie!!  Added bonus, it is based on true story!
