Rain delay at Arnold Palmer Invitational

Well, it is overcast and raining in Orlando.  The final round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational Golf Tournament is currently in a rain delay.  Tiger birdied the second hold (playing with Rickie Fowler) and is currently at the top of the leaderboard at -12.  Replay of round three is being broadcast on NBC right now.  Will have to wait and see if the weather lets up and we get to see round 4 today!  If Tiger wins, he reclaims the world #1 golf ranking.

Meanwhile, NCAA basketball tourney action continues…

Golf update:  Weather worsens with winds up to 60 mph.  Play postponed until Monday and coverage set to begin at 10:00 am EST.

2 Ohio State edges 10 ISU at the “tourney”

Another great game today at the “tourney”.  2 Ohio State edges 10 ISU in the final split seconds to prevail, 78 – 75.  Ohio State enjoyed a 13 point lead and let it slip away.  Aaron Craft (OSU) missed some key free throws and things looked bleak for the Buckeyes, who have the door wide open for them after 1 Gonzaga crashed and burned last night.  With under 2 seconds remaining, Craft launched a three point shot and it was all net!  OSU survives and will head to LA (lucky guys!) for the Sweet Sixteen.  More action in store for us throughout the day and night!

Great first Indy Race at St. Pete!

WOW!  What a start to the 2013 Indy Racing Series!  Great race today from St. Petersburg, FL.  Weather not so good, is the weather good anywhere? Oh, yes, in Southern California…OK, that is a completely different topic.  Anyhow, first of all, David Letterman was in attendance.  Letterman is a huge Indy race fan, and is part owner of the Rahal-Rahal (father-son) racing team.  Now, for the bad news for me.  My guy, Dario Franchitti, four time series champ, goes out after 19 laps, crashing into the wall coming out of the pit on cold tires.  Bummer, bummer, bummer.  Not a good start to the year for Dario.

James Hinchcliffe in the Go Daddy car wins his first Indy race.  Congrats to him!  Tremendous race for him and the Go Daddy team.  Helio Castroneves (remember the DWTS champ) finishes in second and Marco Andretti takes third to round out the podium.  Tony Kanaan finished fourth and Scott Dixon (Dario’s racing partner along with Charlie Kimball) comes from way back in the field to take the 5th place finish.  Great race by Dixon.  A lot of emotion at this race as Dan Wheldon Way was again recognized in honor of Dan, who was tragically killed in a race a year and a half ago.  Dan’ family, wife Suzi and two young children make their home in the St. Pete area and she was at the race.  Will never forget watching that tragic event and being on the phone with my friend and Indy insider as we waited for the bad news to unfold.  Happier day today in St. Pete.  Great first race for the Indy series.  Hope Dario can get things on track.  His big competitor, Will Power had a disappointing finish in 16th place.

Next race is April 7th from Alabama.

Bracket Buster! Out goes Gonzaga!

Oops..there goes my bracket!  #1 seed Gonzaga fell to Wichita State last night, 76 – 70.  Gonzaga had not experienced the feeling of a loss in nine weeks, but this one will leave a very sour taste.  They are the first #1 seed to go out and their exit opens the door for Ohio State in the West.  Very disappointing performance by Gonzaga.  In other games, 1 Louisville easily took care of Colorado State, 82 – 56.  12 Oregon continues to surprise with a stunning beat down of 3 St. Louis, 74 – 57.  The other Pac-12 team 12 California was not so fortunate, going down to 4 Syracuse, 66 – 60.  In perhaps the best game of the tournament so far, 6 Butler lost to 3 Marquette, 74 – 72.

A lot of great action on tap for today to complete the process of whittling the field down to the Sweet Sixteen.  1 Kansas and 8 UNC, 1 Indiana and 9 Temple, 7 Creighton and 2 Duke, 7 Illinois and 2 Miami to mention a few.

Catching up with the “tourney”

NCAA March Madness is in full swing.  Let’s see where we are…last #1 seed, Kansas survived an upset bid by Western Kentucky last night and prevailed, 64 – 57.  All four #1 seeds make it through the first test.  Note: In twenty nine years, a #1 seed has never fallen to a 16 seed in the first round.  8 UNC won over 9 Villanova, 78 – 71.  The Tar Heels will take on #1 seed Kansas Sunday at 5:15 pm EST.  Another #1 seed, Indiana (my pick to win it all) will also be in action on Sunday against Temple.

Big day for the two teams from Michigan.  4 Michigan takes care of 5 VCU (Virginia Commonwealth University) today, 78 – 53.  3 Michigan State (could be a real sleeper to make it through) prevails over 6 Memphis, 70 – 48.

How is your bracket looking?  Mine is doing pretty well, better than last year.  Still looking for that Cinderella team, will it be the brainiacs, Harvard, or perhaps the giant slayers, Southwest Florida College from Ft. Myers (taking out Georgetown)?  Not looking too good for Harvard as they are down to 6 Arizona 40 – 26 at the half.  Stay tuned…the action continues.

Update: Harvard’s bubble has burst as they fall to Arizona, 74 – 51.

Tiger Woods in control at Bay Hill

Tiger Woods has cruised into the lead at Bay Hill Club and Lodge after three rounds.  He sits alone atop the leaderboard at -11.  The rest of the top of the leaderboard is as follows: Justin Rose, Rickie Fowler, and John Huh at -9, Bill Haas, Thorbjorn Olsen and Fdez-Castano (playing with Tiger today), at  -8.  Tiger has put on a putting clinic while only hitting one half of the fairways.  He tossed us an eagle today, his third in this event.  He has won this event, The Arnold Palmer Invitational, seven times and will tomorrow be dressed in Sunday red gunning for his 8th title at this event.  Seldom does Tiger head into Sunday with a lead and not prevail.  I am hoping for a great final round of golf tomorrow with Tiger doing that “fist pump” when all is said and done.  Should he do so, he will once again be the #1 ranked golfer in the world.  Catch the final round tomorrow at 2:00 pm EST on NBC.

How do you solve a problem that is the Lakers?

How do you solve a problem that is this year’s Lakers?  The LA Lakers lost last night at home to the Washington Wizards after having a 16 point lead at the half, 100 – 103.  They had superstar Kobe Bryant back in the lineup along with Pau Gasol.  Still, they could not, and seemingly cannot get it together for an extended period of time.  They have suffered through numerous injuries to their megawatt star power, Steve Nash being out with a fractured fibula, Dwight Howard struggling with several injuries as well as finding his role in the Lakers’ offense, Kobe out for a few games (face it, Kobe doesn’t miss games unless he almost cannot breathe), Pau Gasol out for a number of weeks with an injured foot, Steve Blake out and recovering from abdominal surgery.  You name it, the Lakers have dealt with it.  They fired head coach Mike Brown early in the season and hired Mike D’Antoni, a controversial hire.  All in all, it has not completely meshed with any sustained continuity.  One simply cannot deny the enormous talent that is on this roster.  Yes, it is aging in some respects, but there is young talent on the bench, Jamison, Meeks to name two.  The problem seems to lie in defensive struggles, the lack of sustained playing time together between the starters, and perhaps the philosophy of D’Antoni which may not be the best fit.  Kobe, Nash and Howard have guaranteed us they will make the playoffs.  They likely will.  But, after that, where do they go?  Can they make any kind of run in the playoffs given the current state of affairs?  I want to say they can but I have been a Lakers fan since I was young…who cannot get caught up in the Staples Center rocking with movies stars in the house and the crowd chanting “I love LA”…plus all the storied seasons this franchise has put on display for all of us to enjoy.  At the end of the day, this team has not had time to put their talents together for a sustained period to learn to trust each other and really know each other and play together.  That may be the reason they do not succeed in Kobe’s quest for yet another title this year for sure.  One has to also question whether D’Antoni can be the solution as coach.  Will Dwight Howard sign on for anther year and give it a go next year with the hope of putting things together?  All of these questions are just that, questions that will have to be answered.  At times this Lakers team looks brilliant, but they struggle to maintain it night in and night out for four periods.  They struggle on defense.  Well, for all of us Lakers fans, we just have to hold our breath and wait and see.

Georgetown exits the Big Dance

Out goes Georgetown.  The number 2 seed fell to Florida Gulf Coast (15th seed), 78 – 68.  Out go the Hoyas with a thud and they are partying in Ft. Myers, Florida.  8 University of North Carolina survives 9 Villanova, 78 – 71 and will face the winner of the 1 Kansas vs. Western Kentucky game.  Isn’t this so much fun!!
