Lakers survive Hawks comeback

The LA Lakers had a 16 point lead in the second half over the Atlanta Hawks and then had to hold on for dear life to win, 99 – 98.  Hawks were led by Al Horford with 24 points and Josh Smith played a huge role in their second half comeback trying to guard Kobe Bryant.  In the end however, Kobe was not going to let this one slip away as he scored 34 points and stole away an errant pass to preserve victory for the Lakers.  (Also had a monster dunk, reminiscent of the Kobe of old!) Should the Lakers somehow manage to upset OKC on the road on Tuesday night, they would have a winning record for the first time since just before Thanksgiving 2012.  With last night’s home victory, they are at 500 for the season (last time this was true was late December 2012).

Lakers continue on their quest to catch the Houston Rockets for the 8th and final spot into the playoffs.  Will they make it?  Kobe, Dwight and Nash have guaranteed it.  Stay tuned and see if they can deliver ( I am saying yes, they will).

Sunday College Basketball

Big Ten is just a force this year!  Today’s results, 4 Michigan over 9 Michigan State 58 – 57.  What a great game!  Also, Purdue upsets 17 Wisconsin 69 – 56.  Really looking forward to watching Big Ten in the “tourney”.

Speaking of the “tourney”,  a tornado reportedly touched down in Atlanta, very close to Phillips Arena, the site of the 2013 Final Four.  The “tourney” is coming, but not quite time for this level of drama!

ACC action close to Phillips Arena, NC State at Georgia Tech at the very impressive McCamish Pavilion. NC State is projected to be a #8 seed in the NCAA tournament.  Final score, NC State 70 – GT 57.  GT falls to 5 – 11 in ACC play for the year.  NC State is 10 -6 and should get first round bye in ACC tournament.  Senior day in Atlanta.  Thanks to senior point guard Udofia for sticking around.  Shows great character in this young man.  Could have left after Hewitt and staff was fired.  Been hard to be a GT basketball fan for a few years now.  Hopefully, this young team can begin to make things happen in the next couple of years…

Also in ACC action, Boston College beats UVA, 53 – 52.  Nice win for BC, but Univ. of  Virginia is still projected as “in” for the tourney.  Stay tuned folks, things are winding down and soon we will have conference tournaments and then selection Sunday!

The ACC Tournament will take place March 14 – 17 in Greensboro, NC.

OKC defeat the Clippers in game one of doubleheader from LA

OKC Thunder take care of the LA Clippers, 108 – 104.  Pretty exciting game.  OKC had a 19 point lead at one point, but down the stretch things got very tight.  Got a bit chippy, flagrant two foul on Ibaka, Blake Griffin making one of two free throws and then fouled out with just under a minute.  Hey, did I mention Billy Crystal was in the house.  Wonder if he is hanging around for the Lakers game against the Hawks, or just there for the Clippers game?  Is LA still a Lakers town?  I don’t care what the teams’ records are, I say yes!  LA is still all about the Lakers.

OK, back to the OKC – Clippers game, Westbrook led OCK with 29 points, 6 rebounds, and 10 assists.  For the Clippers in the point guard battle, Chris Paul had 26 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists.  Blake Criffin had 20 points along with Jamal Crawford (again, why did the Hawks let him go?).  The Thunder win all three games in this year’s series with the Clippers.

Next up at the Staples Center at 9:30 pm EST, Lakers host the Atlanta Hawks.  Another must win game for “the” team from LA.

Final round from Honda Classic

The final round of golf at the Honda Classic concluded this afternoon.  I am going to be honest, I just caught bits and pieces.  I knew Tiger had shot a 74, T for 38th, not a great day and Rory was gone after eight holes yesterday.  Still, the winner was Michael Thompson at -9.  The leaderboard went through a lot of machinations throughout the afternoon.  After play was completed, Thompson stood alone with a 2 shot victory.  Geoff Ogilvy finished at -7  for second place.  Luke Guthrie wound up his play at -5, and five players came in at -3, David Lynn, Lucas Glover, Erik Compton, Justin Rose and Keegan Bradley.

Congrats to Michael Thompson.  Next up is the WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral.  Tiger will be in the field.

In all honesty, found the finish of the OCK – LA Clipper game more exciting, along with the Hallmark Movie Channel Mystery Woman Movie Marathon (that is for the ladies!).

Speaking of LeBron James

NBA action today, LeBron James and the Miami Heat came from behind to defeat the NY Knicks at Madison Square Garden, 99 – 93.  LeBron had 29 points, 7 assists, 3 steals and 1 blocked shot.  Wade added 20 points and Chris Bosh had 16 points.  The Heat had trailed most of the game, 48 – 59, later 73 – 77 but led by James overcame Carmelo Anthony’s 32 points and the Knicks to prevail.

Next up OKC visits LA to play the Clippers.  The Lakers will then follow in the Staples Center hosting the Hawks.(9:30 pm EST)

In CBB, NC State visits McCamish Pavilion to take on  Georgia Tech…Go Jackets! (6:00 pm EST on ESPNU)

NBA news update:  Not good news for San Antonio Spurs.  Star point guard Tony Parker will be out for at least one month with a sprained ankle.  Will be interesting to see if they sustain their league best record with Parker out!

Chick flick day on Hallmark Channel

Looking for something to watch on a cold day that is for the ladies?  Check out the Mystery Woman series starring Kellie Martin.  I really love these movies.  They are running all day and into the evening.  She plays a Mystery Bookstore owner and an amateur sleuth.  I have always liked her, especially since her days on ER (horrific way she exited the show, remember?).  Anyhow, for a nice zen day of chick flick movie watching, not a bad offering all day on Hallmark Channel.

Magic Johnson offers $1 million for slam dunk contest winner

Kind of interesting story.  Magic Johnson has offered a $1 million prize to next year’s winner of the slam dunk contest, part of the NBA All Star game festivities every year.  This money will go to anyone who can beat him (LeBron) in the contest!  Pretty cool, uh?  Back in the day, (oops, did I just date myself?), all the top NBA players used to participate in the slam dunk contest.  As of late, it is newbies and the contest has suffered as a result.  Magic has specifically targeted LeBron James in this offer, tying to get LeBron to participate next year.  James has indicated that he will mull it over!  Stars like LeBron and Blake Griffin and numerous others should be in the dunk contest to make it a “legitimate” event that rewards the top dude in the NBA.  Guess we will have to wait and see if LeBron and others take Magic up on his offer.  (Currently the NBA pays the winner $1000,000. and the runner-up $50,000.)

Ryan Kelly returns for Duke and they edge Miami

Ryan Kelly returned to action for 3 Duke and they squeaked past 5 Miami today at Cameron Indoor Stadium, 79 – 76.  Duke is a different team with Kelly back in the lineup as he scored 36 points, a career high, to lead Duke over the Hurricanes.  Miami remains in first place in the ACC, but watch out the for Dukies with Kelly back in the lineup!

Elsewhere, 20 Butler lost to VCU by 32 points!  Ouch!

Iowa vs. 1 Indiana in action right now, Indiana up 39 – 27 early in the second period at home.  Expect Indiana to prevail in this one.

Final: 1 Indiana 73 – Iowa 60.  Indiana now 13 -3 in the Big Ten and picks up 25th win of the year.
