Bama loses top recruiter

Reportedly Alabama is losing top recruiter, Mike Groh to the NFL.   He is rumored to be interviewing with the Chicago Bears and will be replaced by Billy Napier, formerly the TE coach and recruiting coordinator at FSU.  Big loss for Bama but, the Tide will continue to roll.

Another celebrity marriage bites the dust

Another day, another celebrity marriage goes bust. Gee, that sounds callous.  Shame on me!  Diane Lane and Josh Brolin have confirmed they are in fact divorcing after eight years of marriage.  She supposedly signed the papers on Valentines Day, how romantic…this has been a bit of a rocky marriage with his drinking, arrests, and even one round of alleged spousal abuse.  Sad, sad, sad, but I am sure they will both rebound without a hitch.  They have no children together, both have children from previous marriages/relationships.   Something to be grateful for…Too bad, they were a lovely looking couple.

Big upset in college basketball

Like the saying goes…all good things must come to an end?  2 Miami fell on the road today at Wake Forest, 80 – 65.  This was actually a tail kicking at the hands of the Demon Deacons.  Miami trailed at the half, 42 – 26.  The made a run in the second half, closing the gap to 50 – 43 but Wake Forest was on fire and finished with a flurry.  Of course, the fans stormed the court after the game.  Good bye to the 14 game winning streak, undefeated in ACC play, and back down to earth a bit.  Still, Miami sits atop the ACC with a huge game on the horizon when they will tavel to Cameron Indoor Stadium to take on Duke, March 2nd.  Congrats to Wake Forest on a huge win!

Lakers win and Howard says he is focused and committed

The LA Lakers defeated the Trailblazers last night, 111 – 107.  Kobe Bryant scored 40 points and Dwight Howard scored 19 points, with 16 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.  Perhaps more importantly, Dwight Howard spoke after the game about how after attending the memorial service for Dr. Jerry Buss, longtime owner of the Lakers who passed away last week at the age of 80, he was very moved by what Dr. Buss had done for LA and NBA basketball.  Dwight said he wants to make a positive difference in LA and in the world.  Dwight has often been called immature, “the man child”, and has alienated fans in both LA and previously in Orlando.  For now, Howard appears to be on board with making the Lakers a playoff team.  He certainly continued to play with an intensity and energy last night that has at times seemed lacking this season. If he he is able to follow through with this new found commitment, with Kobe, Steve Nash, Jamison, World Peace and hopefully eventually Pau Gasol back, the Lakers can be a real threat if they can make it into the playoffs.

The Lakers will next be in action at 1:00 pm EST on ABC when they take on the Dallas Mavericks.  After the comments from Mav’s owner, Mark Cuban regarding Kobe Bryant and how the Lakers might want to consider trading him, well, let’s just say this game should be interesting!

Academy Awards on Sunday

Moving on…the Academy Awards air on Sunday evening.  Yes, the Oscars!  What will everyone wear??   Who will win??  Seth MacFarlane is hosting and that should be a show within itself.  I am looking forward to this show as I do every year.  Those of us who love movies cannot wait.  A few not so bold predictions:

Best Picture – Argo; Best Director – Ben Affleck – Argo, oh wait, he didn’t get nominated (gee, how absurd) so, I don’t know; Best Actress – Jennifer Lawrence – Silver Linings Playbook and Best Actor should go to Daniel Day-Lewis – Lincoln.

Will see how if all unfolds on Sunday night, 8:30 pm EST on ABC!

Oscar Pistorius story

The Oscar Pistorius story is one I have wanted to avoid.  This story is so sordid, heartbreaking, and sad that one just wants to look away.  Unfortunately, it cannot be ignored.  Pistorius, the Olympic competitor with two prosthetic legs is accused of premeditated murder in the death of his model girlfriend in South Africa.  He fired three shots into the bathroom, thinking it was an intruder after she apparently locked herself in the bath room to protect herself after an argument.  Really?  There had been domestic issues prior to this incident, but he claims he thought it was an “intruder” in the bathroom.  Well, believe what you want.  This story is AWFUL!!  A beautiful girl is dead.  He seems completely broken and destroyed.  Seems like maybe he was a bit that way prior to this event?  Today, he was granted bail.  At the end of the day, there will be way too many lives impacted and destroyed by this senseless violence.  She is dead, he will likely be convicted (?) and spend who knows how many years in jail.  And the families of both, heartbroken and devastated forever.  Too sad…last  post  I will do on this horrific story.

NBA trade deadline comes and goes and Kobe gives us a guarantee

The NBA trade deadline came and went yesterday at 3:00 pm EST.  Nothing really big went down.   Josh Smith of the Atlanta Hawks was rumored to be headed to perhaps Milwaukee or even Dallas.  Alas, nothing happened and Josh is still an Atlanta Hawk. Wonder how he is feeling about that today?  Anyhow, I still wonder what the Hawks were thinking when they traded Joe Johnson.  (see earlier post)  Joe is lighting it up as a member of the Brooklyn Nets.

Speaking of NBA news, Kobe Bryant has guaranteed us that the LA Lakers will make the playoffs.  Kobe has spoken, and I gotta say, I believe him.  Kobe says that not only will the Lakers get it done as far as making the playoffs, but that they will be a force to be reckoned with once they are there.  Well, if they do what it is going to take to make it into the playoffs, then they will be a factor.  If they can find the consistency to play together as a team with all the talent they have, get Pau back and make it into the playoffs, they will be a problem for anyone they face.  The road to making good on this guarantee continues tonight when the Lakers face off against the Portland Trailblazers at home.  Kobe said earlier they need to win 20 of their next 28 games.  They won one against the Celtics the other night.  Tonight could be #2!
