Say good bye to a “Landmark”

Say good bye to a “Landmark”.  Candlestick Park in lovely San Francisco, CA will be no more after 2013.  “The Stick” as it is affectionately known has been the home of the San Francisco Giants and is the current home of the Super Bowl runner-up San Francisco 49ers.  Sad to see it go…The 49ers will be moving to a new stadium in Santa Clara, CA after next season.  Trivia alert…The Beatles played their last concert in Candlestick Park in 1966!

Lindsey Vonn injured

Lindsey Vonn was airlifted to the hospital after a nasty crash in the Super G in the World Skiing Championships in Austria.  Early reports indicate she suffered a serious knee injury.  Fog had set in and competition was delayed, visibility was so poor once Swiss competitor complained that she could not see “anything”.  Hope this is not too serious…more news will surly come out once she has been examined and treated.

Update: Vonn suffered torn ACL and MCL (bummer!!) and is expected to return in time for the 2014 Olympics.  Wish her well and a successful recovery.

National Signing Day tomorrow

Big day in college football tomorrow, National Signing Day with coverage beginning at 7:30 am on ESPNU and continuing until 7:00 pm EST.  That is all day coverage folks!

So where will the nations #1 recruit, Robert Nkemdiche land?  Ole Miss?  Or will it be a surprise, say perhaps LSU?  Nkemdiche is out of Gwinnett County, GA and his brother plays at Ole Miss.  Momma wants him to play with his brother.  He is expected to do what momma says, but he did recently make a visit to Les Miles and LSU where he reportedly spent some time hanging out with Shaq.  We will find out for sure tomorrow.

As of now, the projected top ten recruiting classes are: 1 Florida, 2 Alabama, 3 Notre Dame, 4 Ohio State, 5 Michigan, 6 LSU 7 Texas A & M (helps to have the Heisman Trophy QB returning as a sophomore), 8 USC, 9 UGA and 10 FSU.

Stay tuned…there is usually a surprise or two in store for us on this day!

The second half turned out to be “Super”!

The second half of the Super Bowl began with a 108 yard kickoff return by Raven’s Jacoby Jones (another New Orleans native), tying the longest in NFL history.  Then something strange happened, the lights went out in the Super Dome.  After a 34 minute delay, the lights were back on and so were the San Francisco 49ers.  Kaepernick brought them back in style, closing the gap to 34 – 29 with the ball inside the ten yard line and four downs for a Super Bowl victory.  Could not get it done, goal line stand by the Ravens, with of course a bit of controversy, questionable no holding call on 4th down pass into the endzone, and game is essentially over.  Ravens took a safety to run the clock down to 4 seconds before punting, ball returned to fifty yard line and the Ray Lewis “farewell tour” concludes with a ring.  Joe Flacco deservingly named MVP.  The handshake between the Harbaugh brothers was warm, sincere, and almost loving, but Jim will take awhile to let go of his fury at the “no call” I am sure.  None the less, it was a Super Bowl game worthy of being called Super.  Congrats to the Baltimore Ravens!  (yes, I was wrong, I picked San Francisco).  A bit of irony, the 3.5 pt favorite 49ers lost by 3 points to the “underdogs”.  Hard to think of this Raven team as underdogs!  The Vince Lombardi Trophy will head to Baltimore until next year!

Now for my favorite Super Bowl commercial…here’s your hint, think beer, horses, and Stevie Nicks!  The Bud commercial with the Clydesdale horses and Stevie Nicks singing Landslide…priceless!

Hope you all enjoyed super game as much as I did…until tomorrow…goodnight!

Halftime at the Super Bowl

Halftime at the Super Bowl and the Ravens are getting it done.  They lead 21 – 6.  WOW!  And I picked the 49ers…guess there is still another half to play but things are going to have to go in a different direction for San Francisco to pull this one out.  Joe Flacco has been tres impressive as has his receivers, RB Ray Rice, and the Ravens defense.  Big interception for New Orleans native Ed Reed, tying the record for most interceptions in the postseason.  49ers QB Kaepernick has looked uncertain at times and a very costly fumble by Lamichael James did not help San Fran’s cause.   Two turnovers by the 49ers and zero by the Ravens in the first half.  Very testy first half…got to wander what it was like in the Harbaugh household when these two boys (John and Jim) were growing up??

Halftime performance by Beyonce and then the second half…will wrap this up later (or tomorrow!)

Mickelson shines in the desert

What a performance by Phil Mickelson in the Phoenix Waste Management Open in Scottsdale, Arizona!  Phil won with a score of -28 atop the leaderboard.  His four day total of 256 matched the second best round of golf at the tournament ever.  Phil loves playing out there and they love to see him play there as well.  Snedeker finished second at -24, Perry came in third at – 23, and Moore was in fourth at -22.  These were some incredible rounds of golf for sure!  This win should catapult Phil back into the top ten.  With Tiger winning last weekend at Torrey Pines and Lefty giving us an amazing performance this weekend, one can only hope we are in for a truly memorable year in golf!  Don’t forget about Rory!

Lakers win again and I gotta say…

The LA Lakers won again today, defeating the Pistons in a close game, 98 – 97.  I gotta say folks, I like seeing Pau Gasol at center!  Gasol scored 23 points, had 10 rebounds and 3 assists.  He also blocked a shot as time was expiring that sealed the deal for “the” team from LA.  Kobe added 18 points.  Dwight Howard sat this game out again with his shoulder injury.  Makes you wonder if the Lakers are not a better team with Gasol in the post.  Like I said in an earlier post, put Gasol at center, Dwight at power forward.  I’ m just saying…the new formula is working!!

Georgia Tech wins another home ACC game!

Georgia Tech secured another ACC win today, their second (against six losses, oh well!) defeating Virginia 66 – 60 in a thriller!  Remember in the “good ole days’, the coliseum used to be called the “Thriller Dome”.  Today, Georgia Tech at home in the new  McCamish Pavilion provided the crowd with a thrilling game.  GT trailed for almost the entire game and it appeared the Jackets would go down and suffer yet another disappointing loss.  But, GT came roaring back in the waning minutes of the game and secured a much needed win over the Cavs.  Way to go Jackets!!  Impressive performance by a very young team with a lot of talent, much of which is freshman and sophomores, with the senior leadership of Udofia at point guard.
