Lakers welcome Gasol back into the starting lineup

Welcome back to the starting lineup Pau Gasol.  The Lakers defeated the Timberwolves (missing Kevin Love) last night, 111 – 100.  Gasol played the post position as Dwight Howard is back in LA with a reinjured right shoulder. Pau scored 22 points and had 12 rebounds.  Pau has come under criticism lately, a bit unfounded in my view, he is just not being utilized in the right way!  This is a guy who came in five years ago and helped lead the Lakers to two NBA titles.  Play Pau in the post position!!  Kobe Bryant continued in his multifaceted role as scorer/facilitator with 17 points, 12 rebounds, and 8 assists.  Steve Nash added 17 points and 7 assists.  The Lakers bench contributed as well.  This is game two of a seven game road stretch for the Lakers.  I am beginning to believe again.  I think the Lakers get it done and make  it into the playoffs!

In another noteworthy NBA game, the Indiana Pacers led by David West (30 points) hammered the Miami Heat, 102 – 89.  Ouch!

Golf update

Mickelson leads the Waste Management Open from Scottsdale, Arizona after two rounds with a score of -17.  He double bogeyed the 18th hole which prevented him from setting a new record for 36 holes of golf.  Bummer!  In second after two rounds is Haas at -13 and Bradley is in third at -12.  Round three underway today, 3:00 pm EST.  Mickelson already -19!

Switching to pop culture news

Crossing over to pop culture news, Penelope Cruz and hubby Javier Barden are expecting their second child.  They are parents to a three year old little boy.  Congrats to them!

The lovely and talented Oscar nominated Jennifer Lawrence (Silver Linings Playbook) was a guest on Jimmy Kimmel last night.  Yes, Jimmy has taken his show back after Matt Damon hijacked it a few nights ago in one of the more entertaining moments we have had on TV in awhile.  Jennifer said she was a little sick, recovering from walking pneumonia and a little drunk, having enjoyed some tequila shots courtesy of the producers prior to her appearance.  She is so funny and real, gotta say, I love her.  Hope she takes home the Oscar to go along with her Golden Globe and SAG award.

Intriguing College Basketball game…

In the midst of Super Bowl mania, we have a very interesting college basketball game on Saturday evening.  1 Michigan will travel to 3 Indiana and it will air on  ESPN at 9:00 pm EST.  Could be a great one, two potential Wooden Award contenders from each team will be on the floor.  Wonder if loyal University of Indiana fan John Mellencamp and girlfriend Meg Ryan will be in the house?  Stay tuned…

NFL today on Friday before the Super Bowl

The NFL today before the Super Bowl is full of news.  Let’s start with commissioner Roger Goodell giving his state of the NFL address.  (Who knew, not only do we have a State of the Union address, we have a state of the NFL address?) Anyhow, Goodell says that the state of the NFL is safer, that they will continue to suspend players for illegal hits.  Further, he lauds the comeback of players such as Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson.  He then told us that the NFL is close to reaching an agreement with the players union and expects to be testing for HGH by the start of the 2013 season.  Did he make a Super Bowl prediction?  No, he did not.

The Harbaugh brothers (John and Jim) gave a joint press conference today, the first ever by two brothers as coaches whose teams were competing in the Super Bowl.  Pretty cool.  By the way, the weather in New Orleans looks pretty nice to me (high of 38 here, yuck!).  John was dressed for success in a suit, Jim was causal and did not look like he really wanted to be there.  They both said they had given no thought what so ever to the “hand shake” after the game.  Bet Mom and Dad have!

SportsNation is also in New Orleans, is anybody not in New Orleans right now?  Jerry Rice did a nice little dance to the lyrics of “best there ever was”.  Lolo Jones, a LSU alum, gave her pick, San Francisco.  Are you guys ready for my pick?  I am still leaning toward San Francisco, not yet ready to confirm it.  I promise, it is coming!

Who will win NFL MVP?  What about Comeback Player of the Year?  Rookie of the Year?  We will find out tomorrow.  I will make those predictions now.  MVP – Adrian Peterson;  Comeback Player of the Year – Peyton Manning;  Rookie of the Year – very intriguing race between RG III, Andrew Luck and Russell Wilson…and the award goes to RG III.  Let’s see if I am right tomorrow!

Howard out for Lakers game tonight

Dwight Howard will not play tonight when the Lakers take on the Timberwolves in Minnesota.  Dwight has returned to LA after reinjuring his right shoulder in the loss to the Jazz.  This means Pau Gasol will start at center.  I don’t think that is a bad thing, will depend on how his supporting cast performs.  Will Kobe be the facilitator he has been recently?  Stay tuned…game on at 9:30 pm EST on ESPN.  This the second game of a seven game road stretch for the Lakers and it may determine whether they can make up enough ground to “elevate” themselves into the 8th seed and make the playoffs.  Who would have thought we would be talking about the Lakers making it into the playoffs as the 8th seed?

Joe Flacco wants more $$$

Show me the money!!, says Baltimore Ravens QB Joe Flacco as they prepare the meet the San Francisco 49ers in this Sunday’s Super Bowl.  Flacco says he wants more money, Drew Brees type money, (roughly $20 million/year).  The Ravens have issued a statement that in effect says Joe Flacco is a franchise QB and they intend to pay him franchise QB money.  Good news for Flacco and Ravens fans since his contract expires at the end of this season.

Speaking of contract news, Kansas State head coach, Bill Snyder (age 73), has signed a contract extension through 2017.  Looks like they want to keep the “ole guy” around!  They should, he has done one heck of a job.

Is tennis #1 Victoria Azarenka dating LMFAO frontman?

All of you tennis fans have seen LMFAO lead singer Redfoo sitting in Azarenka’s box cheering her on at numerous tournaments as of late.  Now comes the question, are they pals, or are they more than “just friends”?  Only they know for sure.  But they are kind of a cute and interesting couple.  She seems like a fun girl, and well, we all know he is a good time guy, I mean after all, “party in the house tonight, everybody’s gonna have a good time”, or so the lyrics go.  He is a huge tennis fan, designs tennis clothes, and has a tennis tournament he sponsors.  He was a one time tennis player himself.  Interesting couple, do not know what their relationship is, don’t really care, although in an interview with ESPN.com he does imply that they are “boyfriend/girlfriend”.  Think they make a fun couple and it is kind of cool to see him in her box cheering her on.  Speaking of celebs in tennis player’s boxes, have not seen them there lately, but am looking forward to the next time we get to see Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani cheering on Roger Federer.  Look for one or both of them (along with their kids) to be there most likely at Indian Wells, CA and perhaps Wimbledon as well.
