Falcons to LA rumor

Here we go again.  Another NFL team is being courted by LA.  Los Angeles is the largest metro area in the US that does not have a NFL franchise.  Reportedly, the commissioner, Roger Goodell wants a team in LA.  The Falcons are the latest team LA has set their sights on.  There are issues surrounding building a new stadium in Atlanta for the Falcons and the cost and who should pay for it and how, , etc., etc.  We all know that at the end of the day, Arthur Blank, CEO and owner of the Falcons, could just back the brinks truck up and pay for it if necessary.  LA previously was courting the Jacksonville Jaguars but now have perhaps moved on to the Falcons.  Would love to see a team in LA, they have not had one in almost twenty years.  Seriously doubt the Falcons will leave Atlanta, however.   Hey, I wish someone was wooing me in LA!!

Cute bromance remarks from SAG awards

Caught a couple of interviews on Access Hollywood from the SAG awards.  One with Ben Affleck (congrats again on Argo win!) and he was asked who his Hollywood man crush would be?  He said Brad Pitt, yes, he was so handsome, he loved Brad.  Very good taste Ben.  Cannot fault him for that one!  Next, Hugh Jackman was asked the sames question, he paused, and replied Ryan Reynolds, he was so cute and funny.  Not a bad choice there either, Hugh!

Who has the better gig?

Michelle Beadle, formerly of SportsNation, now with Access Hollywood, debuted her new show on NBC sports network called Crossover.  It is supposed to be a show that discusses topics involving sports and pop culture, and the “crossover”.  I like that mix (imagine that?)  The show is airing from New Orleans this week, you know, the site of the Super Bowl and today’s guest was non other than the “mayor” of New Orleans, Archie Manning.  On a regular basis, Michelle is based in New York.  (never a bad thing)

Meanwhile, her replacement on SportsNation, Charissa Thompson has come in and seen the show move to Los Angeles.  This is a tough call, both great gigs.  Michelle had been with SportsNation for three years so change was perhaps inevitable for her and her career aspirations.  But, like I have said in earlier posts, when I see the clips of Charissa and new co-host Marcellus walking on the beach in LA, sporting their cool shades, a part of me dies inside.  Looks like a bunch of fun to me and a really cool gig.

So, who has the better gig?  Both great but I think I would go with SportsNation from LA on ESPN2…still miss Colin Cowherd!

Tiger reaches 75th career win at Torrey Pines

The sun was shinning (although the temperatures were cold for Southern California) and Tiger was in red (on Monday, instead of Sunday) and Mr. Woods cruised to victory at Torrey Pines at -14, with a 4 shot win over Snedeker and Teater at -10.  Perhaps cruised to victory is being a bit generous, as Tiger stumbled down the stretch, perhaps in part due to the painstakingly slow play which occurred as the tournament wrapped up a day late.  There were long pauses and a lot of waiting as Tiger and his group came down the stretch to finish the tournament, held over til Monday due to suspended play on Saturday (fog).  A win is a win and when Tiger starts his year with a victory, historically it has been a very good year for the golfer previously #1, currently #2.  He has 75 career wins, (Jack has 73) and he is now seven short of all timed record holder Sam Snead at 82.  It was a brilliant performance by Woods up until the back nine today.  The driver became errant but in spite of that, he had built up enough of a cushion that he could finish up the final holes, bogey, bogey, double bogey and then par to seal the win.  Congrats to Tiger!  Here’s to hoping that Tiger is going to be a real factor in the majors this year, would like to see that fist pump that gets me excited, jumping off the sofa, on a Sunday afternoon once the Masters rolls around in April!

For me personally, the biggest issue was finding what channel was showing the final round of play.  It began on Golf Channel, then was supposed to change over to CBS, but due to local news, I could not find the finish until 5:00 pm EST.  Bummer!

SAG Awards and another win for Argo!

The SAG Awards were on last night, same time as the Pro Bowl, and well, I am gonna be honest, I watched the SAG Awards (with a little remote control action from time to time).  Let’s hear it once again for Ben Affleck and Argo, winner of Best Ensemble in a Movie (i.e, SAG version of Best Picture).  Love it, love it!  Also, the wonderful Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress for Silver Linings Playbook and of course, the incomparable Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor for Lincoln.  Other notable winners were Anne Hathaway for Supporting Actress in Les Miserables, and Tommy Lee Jones for Best Supporting Actor in Lincoln.

TV winners were the usual suspects:  Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin,(30 RockModern Family, Kevin Costner (Hatfields & McCoys), Julianne Moore (Game Change), Claire Danes (Homeland), Dick Van Dyke and Bryan Cranston.

Next up, the Oscars!

Shaun White and a sixpeat!

Shaun White, snowboarder extraordinaire has had a bit of a tough go at the Winter X Games in Aspen, CO.  He was not feeling well during some of the earlier competition and did not have the results he had hoped for.  But last night, he did the unbelievable, achieving his 6th gold medal (no one has ever won six consecutive gold medals in a winter X game competition) when he flawlessly performed his Super Pike routine.  He looks a little different right now, having cut his trademark long wavy red locks, but on the Super Pike, he was the Shaun White we have all come to know and appreciate!  Congrats to Shaun White on making history!

Pro Bowl

Well, the Pro Bowl took place last night in Hawaii.  Does anyone care?  Probably not so much.  Must confess, saw very little of it, the Manning boys were there along with Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and many other NFL greats who will not be in New Orleans playing in the Super Bowl.  I think it is an honor for these guys to be chosen to participate, and more so a great vacation for them to enjoy with their families and/or simply for themselves.  Anyhow, the score was a tad bit lopsided, NFC 62 – AFC 28.  Gee, is the NFC really that much better than the AFC?  Will the Super Bowl have a similar outcome?  Probably NOT!  Let’s hope for a great Super Bowl.  Prediction later in the week.
