Good news/bad news for Celtics

One of those days.  Good news and bad news for the Boston Celtics.  Boston defeats the defending world champion Miami Heat in the Garden, 100 – 98 in double OT.  Bad news, Rajon Rondo has a torn ACL and is likely lost for the rest of the season.  He sustained the injury in a game against the Atlanta Hawks last Friday.  Big loss for the Celtics but they looked really good today at home.  Rondo leads the NBA in assists and had been named as a starter on the All Star team for the first time in his career (4th time on all star roster).  Still, great win for the Celtics!

Currently, the Lakers and OKC are locked in a tight duel in the Staples Center.  Lakers lead 97 – 91 with just over three minutes in the fourth period.  Really like what I am seeing from the Lakers today.  Kobe Bryant is on the verge of a triple double.  Kobe the facilitator!  Also, Pau Gasol is getting time in the post which is what needs to happen.  Put Gasol at center, Dwight Howard at power forward.  World Peace having a great game as is Steve Nash.  Let’s wait and see if they hold on.  Perhaps this new formula we saw evidence of in their win over the Jazz is what they have been searching for to succeed.

In college basketball, big win for 7 Indiana over 13 Michigan State, 75 – 70.

Update: final from LA – Lakers 105 – OKC 96.  Big win for the Lakers.  Second game in a row Kobe has had 14 assists (also had 21 points). Steve Nash adds 17 points.  OKC has best record in NBA but this game showed the Lakers they can win against the best and this is how they need to play.  Here’s to hoping they carry this momentum forward!

Tiger in command after three rounds

Tiger Woods leads the Farmers Insurance Open in La Jolla, CA (improved weather today!) after three rounds at – 14.  Fritsch is in second at – 10 and Snedeker and Compton are in third at -9.  Round four will also get underway today and they will play until darkness sets in on the west coat, approximately 5:30 PT.  Tiger has come to play this weekend so far, will he be able to keep it up as they try to get in at least one and a half rounds in one day?  Mickelson has struggled, shooting a round of 75 today and is currently at +2.  More golf to be played, likely into tomorrow.  Don’t know what the schedule will be yet, waiting to see how much of round four they get in today.

Golf resumes on the west coast

It is cold in La Jolla, CA today but the sun is partly out and golf has resumed at the Farmers Insurance Open.  Tiger Woods has already birdied two holes and is now at -13 with a four shot lead.  Eighty seven players made the cut and with action suspended yesterday due to fog, it is going to be a long, slow third and fourth round of play with the tournament  likely extending into Monday.

Stay tuned…things just getting under way out on the west coast.

Djokovic lifts the trophy down under

1 Djokovic has won the Australian Open Championship for the third consecutive year, the first man in the open era to achieve this feat.  He defeated 3 Andy Murray, 6 – 7, 7 – 6, 6 – 3, 6- 2.  The first two sets were extremely tight, neither could convert what few break opportunities they were able to create.  Djoker looked very frustrated in the first set tie breaker (which he lost) and Murray appeared to grow more and more frustrated in the second set, especially after dropping the tie breaker in that set.  Funny how people comment on Federer “losing his cool” in the five set loss to Murray, but have you ever watched Murray and read his lips throughout a match.  Not the stuff you want your children to hear.  Anyhow, back to the title match…Murray called for the trainer after the second set, some sort of issue with his right foot.  From that point, Djokovic took control and went on to win the next two sets 6 – 3 and 6 – 2. Mercifully, Djokovic did not repeat the shirt ripping, chest pounding celebration, just a cute little dance.   Really looking forward to the next tournament (likely to be a Masters 1000 event) in which all of the big four are back together, 1Djokovic, 2 Federer, 3 Murray and 4 Nadal.  Will be interesting to see how the dynamics play out when Nadal returns, and how healthy he is.  Congrats to Novak, quite an achievement, three peat!

CBB – more top ranked teams fall on the road

It is tough to win on the road in College basketball (how many times have I said this).  12 Minnesota falls at Wisconsin, 45 – 44.  11 Kansas falls at ISU, 73 – 67.  5 Louisville loses at Georgetown, 53 – 51, and 3 Syracuse goes down at Villanova, 75 – 71.  It really is hard to win on the road!

In ACC update: 19 NC State jumped out to a huge lead over North Carolina (at home) and held on to win 91 – 83.  Feeling a little better about that loss GT suffered at Chapel Hill and to NC State.

Sunday agenda

Sunday, tomorrow, we have a lot to look forward to.  First, the Australian Open final will offer 1 Djokovic vs. 3 Murray.  It will air live at 3:00 am EST with a replay at 9:00 am EST on ESPN.  Could be epic.  Still, I am lamenting Roger Federer’s loss to Murray in the semifinals, but I am sure Roger, Mirka and family are on their way to somewhere beautiful and he will be ready to play in his next scheduled tournament.  So, for now, Djokovic and Murray will go at it in what is becoming a very intriguing rivalry.  Prediction:  Gotta go with Djokovic

The Pro Bowl from Hawaii will air at 7:00 pm EST.  Many great players will be there, not the least of which will be the Manning boys!  Peyton and his little brother Eli (with the great hair) are in Hawaii with their families enjoying the vacation!  Also, Aaron Rodgers and many others.  Matt Ryan of the Falcons was scheduled to compete but due to his injury had to bow out.  Great NFL stars will be there to compete.  Missing in action will be the guys on San Francisco and Baltimore as they prepare for the Super Bowl the next weekend.  (Beyonce is preparing to perform at halftime of the Super Bowl!).  Pro Bowl should be entertaining but it is really an all star game that is a teaser for the real deal, the Super Bowl.  Ready for my Super Bowl prediction?  Well, I want to pick San Francisco but something tells me the Ray Lewis “farewell tour” may just carry the Ravens to a victory.  Stay tuned…I will give my official prediction next week.  The Manning brothers will entertain us tomorrow at the Pro Bowl, and the Harbaugh brothers will take to another level at the Super Bowl next Sunday!

Also, the SAG Awards are on tomorrow night, same time as the Pro Bowl.  The remote should get a work out!  Hope Ben Affleck continues to show the Academy what a bunch of jerks they were to not give him a nomination and takes home Best Director Award.  Look for Argo to take home Best Picture?  Maybe it will be Silver Linings Playbook?  Or will it be Zero Dark Thirty?  Or Lincoln?  What about Best Actor?  If Daniel Day Lewis is nominated, he usually wins.  Guess we will have to watch and see together!

How about my Jackets!

Golf tournament in a delay due to fog and inclement weather in California, so let’s take a look at some college basketball from Atlanta, GA as Georgia Tech demolishes Wake Forest in the McCamish Pavilion, 82 – 62.  Way to go Jackets!  How about Robert Carter, Jr.!  GT was in complete control of this game, starting out with a 16 – 0 early run.  GT never trailed and like I said in an earlier post, the Jackets would hopefully win an ACC game once they faced a lesser tier ACC opponent.  This was more than true.  GT was very impressive in this victory, completely dominating and now they are 1 -5 in ACC action.  OK, I know, does not sound so good, but overall they are 11 – 7 and 9 – 2 at home.  Daniel Miller, GT center actually leads the ACC in blocked shots, averaging between two and three per game.  All is not bad for the Jackets this year, they can win some games and they proved it today.  Proud to be GT fan!

In other ACC action today, Duke thumped Maryland on the road, 84 – 64 and Virginia defeated BC 65 – 51.  Tonight, NC takes on NC State.  Should be a good one!

Look for Michigan to move up to #1 in Monday’s polls after Duke loss earlier this week and Michigan victory over Purdue.
