The Swiss Maestro schools another young gun down under

2 Roger Federer faced another young gun last night (this morning, I am so confused I cannot keep up with it) down under when he played 13 Raonic of Canada.  Federer took him to class and showed him how it is done with a 6 -4, 7 -6, 6-2 lesson.  This match sounds closer than it really was.  I believe Fed finished with 32/33 winners to 12/13 unforced errors.  The result was similar to the match he had against Tomic a couple days before.  The difference was, Raonic is a class act, an up and coming guy with a monster serve who respects the game and has a wonderful attitude.  Bit different from Tomic, OK, enough said about that.  Roger was superb and gotta say, I like the tennis shoes, black with pink highlights and hot pink laces.  More importantly, when the camera scrolled to Federer’s box, Mirka was smiling and happy, seemed to be really enjoying herself.  That can only mean good things for Roger…you know, happy wife, happy life!  So, the great Roger Federer is once again into the quarterfinals of a major and will next face the colorful and entertaining Frenchman 7 Tsonga, who defeated his fellow countryman Gasquet in four sets.

Serena Williams, the #3 seed who is really the #1 player in the world, had little trouble with Kirilenko, winning 6 -2, 6- 0.  She will face her buddy and rising American star, Sloane Stephens in the quarters.  Sloane reached her first quarterfinals at a major ever by virtue of her three set victory over Jankovic.  Also into the quarterfinals, 3 Andy Murray of GRB with a three set victory over the Frenchman Simon.

First quarterfinal will take place tonight at 7:00 pm EST on Tennis Channel between Radwanska and Li Na.  Coverage switches to ESPN2 at 9:00 pm EST.

Let the good times roll…all is well in the world of College Basketball Ball as Duke is back atop the rankings.  The polls were released a bit late today, and they are as follows:

Few differences, nothing major!

Late Sunday news from down under

Wozniacki falls in three sets to Kuznetsova, 2-6, 6-2, 5-7.  Also, Azarenka advances with a definitive 6-1, 6-1 victory and will next face Kuznetsova.  Serena and Mr. Federer will be the featured in the night matches in Australia, which means 3:00 am EST on ESPN2 here on the east coast in the good ole USA.  Guess I will have to DVR and watch the replay tomorrow am.  GO ROGER!

Also, Chardy of France advances over Seppi of Italy in four sets.  Chardy took out Del Potro.

All hail the Harbaugh brothers!

Would you have ever thought it?  I have to admit, I would not have predicted this result!  Baltimore “upsets” New England in Foxborough, MA (yes, I do know how to spell it, I just have liked to use my own abbreviation “Foxboro” in other posts) 28 – 13.  Bit late with this post, had to watch House of Lies with the incomparable Don Cheadle, who I think is sweet on Kristin Bell in this year’s episodes.  Also, Californication is now on so let me wrap this up!

Congrats to John Harbaugh, Joe Flacco, the Baltimore Ravens and Ray Lewis!  The Ray Lewis “farewell tour” will continue right onto New Orleans and the Super Bowl.  I thought Atlanta-San Francisco was a toss up, even being a Falcon fan, and it was close but 49er’s won.  I never thought Tom Brady and the Patriots would not win, but they lost!  The Ravens poured it on in the second half, multiple interceptions of Mr. Perfect Tom Brady and the Ravens are going to New Orleans.  Especially sweet for Baltimore after last year’s heartbreaking loss to New England in that AFC title game.  Should be really interesting match up.  Instead of the Manning brothers, we will have the Harbaugh brothers match up (as coaches, not players).

Interesting note: Joe Flaco, Ravens QB has thrown for 853 yards, 8 TD’s and 0 interceptions in this post season.

Will be a great game.  Now, please, what time will Roger Federer be on tonight/tomorrow am at the Australian Open?

Heartbreak in Atlanta, again!!!

Oh, blank,  you all know what I mean!  Atlanta falls to San Francisco in the NFC title game, 28 -24.  I said it would be a close game (which it was) or a blow out with the Falcons not on the good end of it.  It was a close game, but the Falcons come out on the losing end anyway.  Atlanta had a 17 – 0 lead and let it slip away.  This has been a bit of a pattern for the Falcons this year, jumping out to a lead, seeing it slip away, and then coming back to win.  This time, they fell short as they failed to convert on 4th down inside the redzone with the game winding down and less than two minutes to play.  Matt Ryan and the Falcons had almost 300 yards total offense in the first half but two costly turnovers by Ryan did not help, an interception  and a fumble.  San Fran’s Kaepernick ( out of Nevada) and LaMichael James (out of Oregon) are both apprentices in the NFL from college run and gun offenses.  Still, what cost Atlanta the game, I do not know.  Falcons played a GREAT game!  Maybe, San Francisco was just a little better today?  Congrats to Coach Harbaugh and the 49ers.  Will he meet his brother and the Ravens in the Super Bowl or will he face Tom Brady and the Patriots?  That game is up next.  We will watch and see.  I am ready to watch Roger Federer, when will he be on tonight, given the time difference between EST and Australia?  What can I say, heartbroken and disappointed in Atlanta!

Lakers lose, again

Well, on the wake of my pro Lakers post, the Lakers drop another road game, falling at Toronto 108 – 103.  Dwight Howard  was ejected after two technical fouls.  Kobe had 26 points, Gasol, starting instead of coming off the bench, added 25 points.  Disappointing loss for the Lakers.  Still, wait and see…think they will get enough done to make the playoffs.  (Call me crazy?)

Will the Lakers make the playoffs?

Scrolling on SportsCenter today, will the Lakers make the playoffs?  Well, they are definitely behind the eight ball.  But, call me a dreamer, a believer in miracles, a Kobe and Lakers fan, whatever, I say yes, they will.  They are going to have to win a bunch of their remaining games and they have the 9th toughest remaining schedule in the NBA.  But there is just TOO much talent on this team.  Kobe will put them on his back and they will somehow, someway, get it done.  They may come in as the 8th seed but they will get in.  They are in action later today against Toronto.  Like most of you, I will be watching the NFL championship games.  First the Falcons, GO FALCONS!  Then New England and Baltimore.  Also, for me, Roger Federer is in action later, everything else does not matter to me when Roger Federer is in action.  Now watching Katherine Heigl (love her by the way) and Gerard Butler in The Ugly Truth, then brunch, then are we ready for some football?

Jennifer Lawrence is the “real deal”

That Jennifer Lawrence is something else!  She was the host on SNL and did an incredible spoof about her fellow Academy Award nominees.  I caught her on Letterman, it may have been a repeat, but anyhow, she is so fresh, real, and TALENTED!!  She was very funny with Dave and told him she had never had any formal acting lessons, but that she was a pathological liar as a child and that is where she thinks she developed her acting chops.  She is truly the real deal.  In a world of Lohans, Spears, and some others, I do not want to be unkind so I will stop, she and Emma Stone are refreshing!  There are other young stars who share these characteristics as well, but I did see Jennifer in Silver Linings Playbook, and all I can say is WOW!

Michelle Kwan gets married!

The most decorated ice skater (male or female) in US history, Michelle Kwan married her fiance, Clay Pell this weekend in Providence, Rhode Island.  They have been engaged since September 2012.  Congratulations to them both.  He is also the director for strategic planning on the National Security staff at the White House.  Michelle received her masters in political science from the University of Denver after retiring from competitive skating.  The bride wore Vera Wang, of course, many of her skating costumes were designed for her by Vera Wang.  I miss her!  She was so graceful and soulful and skated with a joy that is simply unmatched, she was one of kind!  Again, best wishes to them!
