Lance Armstrong and a sad fall from greatness

Word is that Lance Armstrong will confess to Oprah Winfrey to taking performance enhancing drugs during his record reign of seven Tour de France cycling titles.  After all, doesn’t everyone confess to Oprah?  This segment was taped this past Monday and is set to air on Thursday and Friday on OWN.  I do not watch these shows so I will not see it.  But, I do want to say some things about this sad and heartbreaking story of tainted greatness.  I wore a yellow Livestrong bracelet for many years.  I wore it proudly, and I really felt it meant something, a story of overcoming cancer followed by mind  blowing achievement.  In some respects, it still does, but it it dirtied, muddied by a great athlete who overcame a life threatening disease and chose to engage in illegal drugs to enhance his greatness,  This is a sad, sad story, with a tinge of narcissism and self absorbed failings.  Lance Armstrong is perhaps the greatest cyclist in the history of the sport.  But, he cheated!  Yes, I said it, he cheated.  Did he have to?  Could he have achieved greatness without it?  Who knows?  We will now never know.  Here again we have a fallen “hero”, someone we all looked up to and admired, not just because of his achievements but because of what he overcame to achieve.  No one will ever take away from him what he endured to overcome testicular cancer.  But why, oh why, did he have to succumb to performance enhancing drugs to reach the pinnacle of his sport?  For those of you who watch the Oprah interview, maybe you will gain some insight,  Perhaps not.  At the end of the day, another very sad story.

Rory and Tiger now “Nike buddies”

With Rory Mcilroy getting a deal with Nike, he joins Tiger on the Nike endorsement bandwagon.  The two (#1 Rory and #2 Tiger in the golf world rankings) are set to square off this week in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship.  Play begins on Wednesday (10:40 pm EST).  It is always funny to me to hear talk of this “rivalry”.  Of course they are rivals, they are the two top ranked players in the world.  Also, Rory is the young gun and Tiger is the older, seasoned pro trying to make it back to number 1 after a personal life debacle derailed him a couple of years back (we all know the story, boring…so let’ s move on and focus on golf).  The irony of it all is these two really enjoy each other.  They enjoy the “rivalry”, they enjoy playing together and getting to know each other.  Tiger is not an easy person to get to know.  Rory, who is so unabashedly open and honest, seems to have achieved a genuine “golf friendship” with Tiger.  They both love sports and enjoy each others company, especially when on the course together.  This is really a great and interesting rivalry and hopefully it will bring us some tremendous golf to watch in the year ahead!

College Football wrap up courtesy of Bleacher report

Bleacher report.com has issued their final College Football power rankings for 2012.  Kind of interesting.  USC (pre-season number 1 came in at 64, oops!  Georgia Tech, which defeated USC in the Sun Bowl finished at 51, OK, can live with that.

The final top ten were as follows: 1 Alabama, 2 Ohio State, 3 Oregon, 4 Stanford, 5 South Carolina, 6 UGA, 7 Texas A & M, 8 Notre Dame, 9 Kansas State and 10 Florida.  FSU came in at 11 and Clemson at 12.

A little Australian Open news

Last night, Roger Federer won his opening round match at the Australian Open defeating Paire of France, 6- 2, 6- 4, 6-1.  Roger, who has not played competitive tennis for two months after doing an exhibition tour in South America late last year which drew crowds that only a rock star could relate to, looked to be right on his game (of course!)  Next up for Roger is Davydenko.  In other action, 2 Serena Williams won but rolled her ankle so here’s to hoping Serena will be OK and can be at the top of her game for this event.  Number 1 seed Azarenka advanced in two sets.  The lead singer for LMFAO was in her box as they are friends.  He is a huge tennis fan and actually designs tennis clothing.  6 Del Potro advanced in a three set win and a newly svelte 7 Tsonga (appears to have dropped 15 pounds) advanced with a three set win over fellow Frenchmen Llodra.  3 Murray of Great Britain was also a winner in three sets.

Live coverage of this event is on ESPN2 beginning at 9:00 pm EST and continuing on to 3:00 am EST.  Replays begin on ESPN2 at 2:00 pm EST the next day.  Roger visited the set today and talked about his plans for this year, the fabulous experience he had late last year on his exhibition tour of South America. and other stuff.  I just gotta say, I know I am officially a “Fed Fanatic” but how can you not love Roger Federer?

Golden Globe observations

Since I had an event to attend, I had to DVR the Globes.  Nothing I like better than to watch these award shows in my pajamas!  Anyhow, after watching the event here are some thoughts!

Tiny and Amy were hilarious!  Beautiful couples, Nicole and Keith, Daniel Craig (Bond, James Bond) and Rachel Weisz, George and Stacey (um, I’ll take Brad and Angie who were not there).

Jessica Chastain, love her!  Jennifer Lawrence, what a shinning star she is!  Jodie Foster, Kleenex moment!  Kate Hudson, gorgeous!   So many great moments!  But, the moment of the night, Ben Affleck winning Best Director for Argo as well as Argo winning Best Picture.  Affleck should have received an Oscar nomination.  He did not (although Argo did get nominated for Best Picture).  Still, karma is a wonderful thing!  He won the Critics Choice Award for Best Director and now the Golden Globe for Best Director.  Well deserved!!

Peyton Manning has such class!

Reportedly, Peyton Manning waited over an hour and a half to greet and congratulate Ray Lewis after the Ravens’ unexpected victory over Peyton and the Denver Broncos.  There were pictures on ESPN today of both guys in suits, and Peyton was congratulating Ray on the victory, as his “farewell tour” continues.  Is there a more class act in all of sports than Peyton Manning?

Probably not.  But speaking of class, Roger Federer is in action tonight on ESPN2 from the Australian Open.  Watching Roger Federer is one of my favorite things.  Always brings a smile to my face.

I think the two classiest people in all of sports are Peyton Manning and Roger Federer.  Just my opinion, but anyone got a reason to say it is not so?

Pics as promosied from last night’s TV/Film event in the ATL

Hey guys, as I mentioned in my post yesterday, I was invited to attend a TV/Film industry event in Atlanta to mix and mingle, network, etc.  Hated to miss the Golden Globes, got home in time to see the very end and had DVR busy at work and will be catching up today!  SO GLAD to see Ben Affleck and Argo again get their due (after the ridiculous Oscar snub!)  Don’t you love karma!!  Anyhow, the event was great fun, a lot going on in downtown Atlanta after the Falcons big win.  Enjoy the pics.  The lovely gal along side me is Vanessa, an aspiring actress here in Atlanta.

Tennis from “down under”

Australian Open underway and Roger Federer will take the court today!  YES!!!!!  I am a happy camper when I get to watch Roger Federer.  As an aside, Fed has announced he will skip the Davis Cup match next month between Switzerland and the Czech Republic.  No surprise to me.  When Roger announced his schedule for this year, it was clear that his intent was to maximize his opportunities to win “Slams” this year while taking care of himself and his family.  Love someone who has their priorities in order at the right stage in their career.  Can he win down under?  Maybe?  Djokovic is the favorite but never count out the Swiss maestro!

Coverage is on ESPN2 and Tennis Channel.

Dwight returns and Lakers win…

Dwight Howard returned to the Lakers lineup last night and the Lakers defeated the Cleveland Cavaliers, 113 – 93.  Howard had 22 points and 14 rebounds.  Can the Lakers build on this victory?  Kobe cannot carry this team on his back.  Gasol and Hill are still out and sorely missed but the return of Howard along with his performance is a positive sign.  Sit back and see…I still say the Lakers are far from “toast”!

In other NBA news, LeBron James is 50 points shy of becoming the youngest player in NBA history to achieve 20,000 career points (age 28).  Way to go LeBron.  Probably happen in the next game and a half!
