Here it is, BCS National Championship game preview!

Here it is, the night we have been waiting for since the college football season ended!  The BCS title game is tonight at 8:30 pm EST on ESPN.  Before I give a prediction, let talk a bit about the two teams, 1 Notre Dame and 2 Alabama.  Alabama is designed to run the bowl and pound you into submission.  With Lacey and Yeldon, look for Bama to run and run and run.  In addition, QB A J McCarron has been there and done that.  He led Alabama to a National Championship last year.  He will throw the ball at the right moments to complement the punishing ground game Bama will throw at you.  The front seven of Bama is likely the best in the biz.  The game will likely boil down to who wins the battle in the trenches and the odds favor Alabama.  That being said, Notre Dame can win the game.  I did not say they would win the game, I said they can win the game.  They are very talented on defense, they can match up with many SEC defenses, in spite of what we are spoon fed regarding the supremacy of SEC football.  The goal line stands they have produced speak for themselves.  Manti Te’o is an inspiration, both as a player and as a person.  But the Irish have been lucky.  You have to be good to be lucky but there were two games they came close to losing, Pittsburgh and Stanford (did they in fact really lose this game?)  Freshman QB Everett Golson for Notre Dame is talented and capable but lacks the experience of McCarron.  I love that Golson plays the piano to relax, escape and because he enjoys it (and is good at it!)  So who wins this game?

I think Alabama wins.  I also think Notre Dame could win, but Alabama is the favorite.  Who am I pulling for?  Notre Dame.  Alabama is going for their 3rd national title in the past four years.  It will probably happen.  But no one should be shocked if the luck of the Irish rears it’s head and there is an upset!

It is going to be special!

Tennis returns next week from Australia

Before I delve into the BCS Championship game preview, I want to throw out there the joy I feel that tennis returns next week!  That also means the return of Roger Federer!! Yes, always good to see Roger in action again!  Tennis returns down under next week as the Australian Open gets underway, the first Grand Slam of the year!  Rafa will be missing in action and that is a shame.  Djokovic and Murray along with Federer will be there and ready to compete.  Since Roger has reduced his schedule this year, I look at this as the year that Fed is in pursuit of the “slams”.  Last year, he played more tournaments and won Wimbledon in a very well calculated plan to regain the world #1 ranking and break yet another record.  Djokovic has now returned to number #1 while Roger is at #2.  Still, who is to say Roger cannot pick up a grand slam title (or two) this year?

Lakers lose AGAIN!

Oh my, now I am starting to get worried, and I am a believer!  Lakers lose again, falling to the Nuggets 112 – 105.  Kobe scored 29 points, Nash scored 13 and Dwight Howard had a career high 26 rebounds, but it was not enough.  Dwight Howard who has a right shoulder injury is due to have a MRI today.  The unfortunate reality here is simply put, something is not working.  All this talent and it is not happening!  Rumor has it that Dwight and Kobe had a bit of a heated exchange after last week’s loss to the 76er’s.  This is never a good thing but Kobe is so intense and wants to win so badly that one cannot really be surprised.  What is the solution?  I don’t know, I don’t think Mike D’Antoni knows.  I am gonna step out there and say, maybe Phil Jackson was the better coaching hire??

Chip Kelly to stay at Oregon!

Breaking news:  Chip Kelly will remain at Oregon as head coach and not head to the NFL.  He was reportedly interviewing with the Cleveland Browns but has elected to stay at Oregon.  Great news for the Ducks and college football!  Oregon may possibly face a post season ban next year as they are still under NCAA investigation but Kelly has done a tremendous job of recruiting and building that program.  They should be a force to be reckoned with in the years to come.  Again, great news for Oregon and fans of the “quack attack”!

Seattle headed to the ATL..

The Seattle Seahawks are headed to Atlanta to take on the Falcons next Sunday by virtue of a 21 – 14 victory over the Washington Redskins.  Coming from behind (trailing 14 – 0) the Seahawks were powered by a strong rushing game from Marshawn Lynch and excellent QB play from Russell Wilson.  In fairness to the Redskins, RG III was playing on basically one leg.  Clearly, he was not the RG III of earlier in the year prior to the knee injury.  Some might question whether the knee was healed enough for him to even play?  Washington struggled with several bad snaps and when one went awry and RG tried to fall on the ball,  it was clear he could not move his knee to even gather the ball.  He was on the ground while staff and doctors gathered around him but he did walk off to cheers from the crowd.  He could not return and Seattle went on to win the game and advance to next week’s playoff round.

Next weekend the Falcons, who desperately want (and need) to win a playoff game, will have their hands full with this red hot Seattle team!

Can you say a bit of “sour grapes” coming from Al Groh?

Apparently former GT defensive coordinator Al Groh, who was fired mid way through the season, has decided to trash Georgia Tech.  He was quoted in an interview with the Roanoke Times last Wednesday as saying that the circumstances at GT were unprofessional and divisive and referring to the culture as negative.  Really?  When he was fired he released  a statement that indicated he had felt it an honor to be part of the legacy of Georgia Tech football.  Head Coach Paul Johnson of Georgia Tech when asked about the negative comments said he was surprised to hear that and moreover he was surprised Al Groh would stay there for two and a half years if he felt it was that bad.

Such a shame when this kind of thing goes on.  As I Tech fan, I will say that under Groh, the defense was horrible.  That does not in any way mean he is not a brilliant defensive mind.  He trained under the likes of Bill Belichick and Bill Parcsells.  Still, his defensive philosophy did not work at Georgia Tech.  He really did not have the players to play the kind of scheme he tried to implement and there always seemed to be so much confusion, players did not seem to know what their role was and it underperformed.  Under interim defensive coordinator Charles Kelly, things were simplified and the defensive statistics did in fact show a marked improvement.  Will be interesting to see what GT decides to do as far as a permanent defensive coordinator for 2013.

Ray Lewis and Ravens will play another day

Ray Lewis has returned to action and is playing his “farewell tour”.  The tour will go on as the Ravens defeat Indy 24 – 9.  Nice first season for Andrew Luck and the Colts but it is Baltimore that will move on and get the honor of facing Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos next weekend in Denver.  Did not get to see a lot of this game, it is cold and sometimes a girl just needs a spray tan.  Anyhow, congrats to the Ravens but I will be pulling for Peyton and the Broncos next weekend.

Now, let get ready to watch Seattle and RG III and the Redskins!
