Les Miles to where???

The whole Les Miles to Arkansas was a bit much, don’t you think.  I mean who really thought that was actually going to happen?  He is staying at LSU, with a raise and an extension, of course!

Kaepernick has been named the starting QB for the 49er’s for this weekend’s game.  Anyone surprised??

Did everyone happen to see the video of eight year old Lebron James, Jr. shooting shots from the balcony of their ‘home”?  It was awesome!!

Finally, in some Tennis news:  Robin Soderling of Sweden remains unsure of the fate of his tennis career.  He is twenty eight years old and just had a baby six weeks ago with his long time partner.  He has also been out of tennis for almost two years now, battling mono.  Federer and Roddick both suffered mild cases of this virus, but Soderling has been sidelined by a severe case that has zapped him of his strength and energy.  He has seen numerous specialists and there is still no answer to whether he will return or not.  He continues to hold out hope that he can.  Here’s to wishing he does indeed get well and return!

Wednesday mixed bag of sports news…

Starting with NCAA Basketball, 1 Indiana thumped 14 North Carolina last night, 83 – 59.  This was the feature game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge from yesterday.  This is also Jimmy V Week, raising money and awareness for cancer.  He was such an inspiration, who can ever forget…”don’t give up…don’t ever give up!”  Miss you Jimmy V!

Tonight’s big game will be 2 Duke vs. 4 Ohio State, 9:30 pm EST, on ESPN.

College Football news: In keeping with the tradition of Big East schools leaving that conference and joining the ACC, Louisville will join the ACC in 2014 (replacing Maryland who is departing for the Big Ten).

NBA: The Lakers lost again last night, falling to the Pacers 79 -77 in spite of Kobe’s 40 points.  Kind of a low score for a NBA game!  George Hill hit a final second shot to give the Pacers the win.  I am starting to doubt a bit, can the Lakers get it together??  They should be able to, but will they?

Finally, how about some golf news!  The USGA has announced plans to implement a new rule banning the use of the longer putters, also known as the belly putters.  Mickelson had recently experimented with using one, and Adam Scott attributes using his long putter to turning his game around.  The rule, if passed, would take effect January 1, 2016.  Both Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods have spoken out in favor of the ban.  Like Tiger said, if you swing the other thirteen, you should have to swing the putter as well!!  OK now…none of that!

Some Pop Culture news…I finally saw Skyfall!!

It took me awhile, but I finally did it, I saw Skyfall!  Yes, that would be Bond, James Bond. as played by Daniel Craig (Rachel Wiesz is a lucky lady in real life!!)  Anyhow, this movie is a different Bond movie, dare I say an “older” Bond in some ways.  After all, to quote Stevie Nicks in Landside, ” I’m getting older, too”!  It was a little long for my taste, I think a two hour movie is just right, Skyfall comes in at close to two and a half hours.  But, there are some interesting twists and turns.  Javier Bardem, a blonde Javier Bardem, as the villain is to die for, literally???  Also, Matthew Fox of Lost plays a hitman in the early stages of the film.  Moreover, Skyfall holds more significance than just the title of this latest edition of the Bond series.  (I am not going to ruin this movie by telling you more).  Also, the ending results in the loss of one of the characters that took me by complete surprise!  Bond will be back, but it will be different, as the ending of this movie ensures that!  I would give it a must see, just be prepared for two and a half hours!  Next up…Brad Pitt in Killing Them Softly as a hitman…oh, I cannot wait!

Couple more sports tidbits…

Word is Tulane will join the Big East Conference with East Carolina to join as a football member only.  Change is the constant!

In the meantime, the ACC is suing Maryland over the exit fee, as Maryland has departed for the Big Ten.

Kentucky has named FSU defensive co-coordinator Mark Stoops as their new Head Coach.

Moving to basketball, the ACC/Big Ten Challenge gets underway in a big way this evening.  The must see game is at 9:30 pm EST on ESPN, with North Carolina facing off against current #1 Indiana.

Back later…

Tuesday sports updates…

Monday Night Football game between the Eagles and the Panthers turned out to be a surprisingly good one!  Cam Newton had a spectacular night, passing for two touchdowns and rushing for two more as the Panthers won, 30 – 22.

Reportedly, Kansas City Chief’s RB Jamaal James asked Peyton Manning for his autograph after this past Sunday’s game where the Chiefs fell to Peyton and the Broncos.  Can you blame him???

Some sad MLB news:  Former head of the Major League Player’s Association, Marvin Miller has passed away at the age of 95 due to complications from liver cancer.  He led baseball players in a series of strikes and legal battles that resulted in him being known as the founder of “free agency”.  He revolutionized sports and made athletes multimillionaires, for better or worse, depending on your perspective.  Condolences to his family.

Can Georgia Tech go bowling?

Should Georgia Tech lose to FSU in this weekend’s ACC Championship game, they would be 6 – 7 for the year.  That would mean they would perhaps need a waiver from the NCAA to go bowling. Gee, all the more reason to not lose!!

Speaking of losing and/or not losing??? MNF: Eagles (without Michael Vick) vs. Carolina Panthers

Looking for the next Head Coach???

So it has begun, the firings, the coaching carousel has just gotten started.  Who should Auburn consider to replace Gene Chizik?  Some think Charlie Strong, defensive co-coordinator at arch rival Alabama.  Surely, he is a hot commodity and will be considered for all vacant coaching positions, now and in the future.  What about Bobby Petrino, as many of the sports broadcasters speculate?  Petrino, really?  Would anybody seriously consider hiring Bobby Petrino.  The answer is yes.  He is an offensive genius, has been successful everywhere he has coached.  The problem is Petrino, the person! Ask the Atlanta Falcons!

Who should be Coach of the Year in College Football 2012.  One name that keeps coming up is Bill O’Brien at Penn State.  What a remarkable job he has done coming into a horrendous situation.  Not to mention hiring Ted Roof (former GT standout) as defensive co-coordinator.

What about Urban Meyer and the job he has done in his first year at Ohio State.  Love him, hate him, don’ t really care, they are 12 – 0 after all that when on with the dismissal of Jim Tressel.

Who has the most legitimate gripe with the current BCS ranking?  Some would say Florida.  They have defeated four teams ranked in the top thirteen.  Had they not turned the ball over more times than one can keep up with, they may not have lost to UGA and would be undefeated.  Oh well, regret will get you nothing but heartache.  They are still in the running for an at large BCS bowl berth!
