That’s Bond, James Bond…

The newest installment in the 007 James Bond movie franchise is due out November 9th!!  Skyfall looks great and is being billed and promoted as the best Bond movie yet!  Well, I don’t know about that, but it does look great.  Moreover, Daniel Craig is the best Bond ever, perhaps?  Certainly he is the best badas- Bond yet!!

First up is Flight on November 2nd for me, starring Denzel Washington, Don Cheadle, John Goodwin, and others!!

Manic Sunday in NFL so far…

It has been and wild and crazy day in NFL action today so far, and the day is not over!!

One of the better games was the Washington at New York game.  The Giants win 27-23 with Eli Manning doing what he does best, leading his team down the field for the winning score.  If you could pick one QB to have the ball with the game on the line, would you not pick Eli right now?  (Plus, I like his perm!!, see earlier post!!)

Baltimore at Houston was a blowout, Houston running away with the game 43-13.  The Tennessee Titans staged an exciting come from behind victory over Buffalo, 35-34.  Minnesota prevailed over the Cardinals (without starting QB Kevin Kolb) 21-14.  Andrew Luck and the Colts defeated the Browns 17-13 and the Cowboys kicked two field goals to beat Cam Newton and the Panthers 19-14.  Perhaps one of the craziest finishes today so far was in Tampa Bay, where Drew Brees and the Saints won 35-28.  The game see sawed back and forth and with time running out, a potential game winning touchdown pass for the Bucs (pending the extra point) was ruled no TD as the receiver had gone out of bounds and then come back in to be the first person to touch the ball.  Had the ball been tipped, it would have counted.  Brees threw 4 TD passes and Josh Freeman for the Bucs had over 400 yards passing.  Also, the Packers beat the Rams 30-20 so no “trap game” there, as some had predicted.  In the post game interview, Aaron Rodgers urged everyone to keep picking against the Packers, and they would keep coming back and winning!

The Atlanta Falcons, only undefeated team in the NFL, are idle this week.

The Patriots and the Jets are underway with New England up 14-7 in the 2nd quarter.  Tonight the Steelers play at the Bengals.

At 7:00 NLCS coverage begins with the Giants back home, facing yet another elimination game.

Sunday Sports Updates…

First, a couple of final College Football scores from Saturday:  FSU 33 – Miami 20 and Oregon State 21 – Utah 7

Both the AP and the Coaches polls are out.  The top five are identical: 1 Alabama, 2 Oregon, 3 Florida, 4 Kansas State, and 5 Notre Dame.  (I am glad to see Oregon return to no. 2!!)  The next five is where they differ.  The AP poll has the following to round out the top ten: 6 LSU, 7 Oregon State, 8 Oklahoma, 9 Ohio State, and 10 USC.  The Coaches Poll has 6 LSU,  7 Oklahoma, 8 USC, 9 Oregon State and 10 FSU.  The second BCS poll will be out tonight and the burning question is who will be number 2????

NFL action today features an intriguing QB match up between RG III and the Redskins visiting Eli Manning and the New York Giants.  Currently in the 2nd quarter, game is tied 10-10.  Also on, the Ravens visit Houston (Houston leads 16-3 in the 2nd qtr.)  Later, the other New York team, the Jets will travel to Foxboro and take on the Patriots.  Both of these teams are 3-3 for the year so one will end up with a winning record, the other a losing record after today’s action.  Have to bet on New England at home.

Monday Night Football will feature Pittsburgh at Cincinnati.  Pittsburgh has been surprisingly bad so far this year and has a 0-3 road record.

NLCS game 6 on tonight as well.  The Giants will host the Cards who lead in the series 3-2.  In other baseball news, it is being reported that the Boston Red Sox will hire John Farrell (current manager of Toronto Blue Jays) to be their new manager, replacing the fired Bobby Valentine.

Another bit of sports news:  Missy Franklin, the US swimmer and media darling of the London Olympics (“call me maybe?” video fame as well) has announced she will attend the University of California and be a part of the Cal Bears swim team after graduating from high school this spring.  Good for her!

The good, the bad, the ugly…more College Football

The good:  1 Alabama 44 – Tennessee 13,  9 Oklahoma 52 – Kansas 7,  20 Stanford 21 – California 3,  10 USC 50 – Colorado 6, (Matt Barkley throws 6 touchdown passes)

The good and the ugly: 4 Kansas State 55 – 13 WVU 14  Collin Klein scores 7 touchdowns, good bye Heisman for WVU QB Geno Smith; enter Collin Klein, favorite?   Vanderbilt 17 – Auburn 13  Good for Vandy, bad and ugly for Auburn

The I don’t know: 11 UGA 29 – Kentucky 24, it’s a win, but Kentucky, really Kentucky??,  Duke 33 – North Carolina 30  Good for Duke (become bowl eligible), bad for North Carolina

14 FSU 26 – Miami 13  4th quarter, still in progress…(there has been one “wide right”)

Does it matter? North Carolina State 20 – Maryland 18 (Maryland no longer undefeated in ACC play)

Just getting underway: Utah at 8 Oregon State, Oregon State up 14-0

I feel like Terry Bradshaw on the OT!!  Until tomorrow…

College Football afternoon delights…

Well, I am delighted Georgia Tech beat Boston College 37-17.  That being said, I fear that BC is not a legitimate litmus test for the GT defense under interim defensive coordinator Charles Kelly.  A much stronger test is coming next week when BYU comes to Atlanta (BYU was just edged out by Notre Dame 17-14 today, more later).  I was not pleased to see Georgia Tech struggle mightily with their kicking game, missing two field goals and having one blocked.  On a high note, they had over 400 yards of total offense in the first half, well over 500 for the game and held BC to under 300 yards total offense.  Moreover, I am thrilled to see Paul Johnson playing both Tevin Washington and Vad Lee at QB.  I have been calling for Vad Lee to get playing time all season.  Perhaps this can be the start of the season, part deux for the Jackets and they can get on a roll.  OK, a win is a win and they badly needed one!  So onto other afternoon games…

19 Clemson snuffed out any doubt about whether Virginia Tech was going to make a come back this year from a dismal start, dismantling them 38-17.  Clemson remains in contention to win the ACC Atlantic Division and will be keeping an eye on what happens tonight in Miami between FSU and the Canes.

3 LSU traveled to take on Texas A & M and the “12 Man” along with their budding superstar QB Johnny “Football” Manziel and took care of business, winning 24-19.  They were the recipients of four turnovers and capitalized.  Their defense looked like what we expect the Tiger defense to look like and they remain a factor to be reckoned with in the SEC West.  Alabama will come a calling in early November…

This afternoon’s marque match up in the SEC turned out to be a BLOWOUT!!  The old ball coach took his Gamecocks to the swamp to face Florida and this one was not even close, with Florida winning 44-11!  Speaking of turnovers, seems to have been the theme of the day so far.  South Carolina made mistake after mistake on special teams, and Florida was gifted possessions on the 24 yard line, the 3 yard line, and the 1 yard line to set up three of their scores.  Thank you very much they said to their former coach and QB, Steve Spurrier.  I did not see the visor get thrown, but I may have been on remote control switch mode and missed it.  Very disappointing past two performances for South Carolina, last weekend in Baton Rouge and now this week in Gainesville.  Next week in Jacksonville for the outdoor cocktail party against UGA will be huge for Florida.  If they win (and I will make an early prediction and say yes, they will) they will be in the driver’s seat in the SEC East.

As mentioned earlier, Notre Dame survived a strong performance by BYU to remain undefeated, winning 17-14 in South Bend.  Not a great performance by Notre Dame this week, especially offensively.  Big game for them next week at 9 Oklahoma!

Tonight’s games feature 1 Alabama at Tennessee, 11 UGA at Kentucky, 4 Kansas State at 13 West Virginia, and 14 FSU at Miami (this game seems to always have drama, remember wide left, wide left, oh yeah, and wide right)!

Stay tuned…

Lebron taking his talents to LA????

Ha Ha!!  Gotta love this one.  All the sports shows are abuzz with the talk of Lebron leaving Miami and heading out to LA to play for the Lakers when Kobe decides to hang it up in the next two years or so (supposedly?)  This is too good to not talk about.  First, who knows for sure when and how Kobe will decide to retire.  With the addition of Dwight Howard and others, I think the Lakers become the team to beat in the West.  So all of this is a bit premature.  That being said, one could see with an aging Duane Wade, Lebron wanting to head to LA should the opportunity present itself (possibly).  Chris Bosh is young and there is plenty of talent in South Beach (no pun intended), but LA is LA.  Hey, if it were me, I would take my talents to LA.  Let’s just hope that whatever happens, if anything, we do NOT have to endure another ESPN televised “Decision” show!!

Until later…

Pop Culture morsels…

Fergie in her upcoming interview on Oprah’s Next Chapter addresses the impact of the alleged “stripper cheating scandal” involving her husband Josh Duhamel and it’s affect on their marriage.  She says that the marriage has become stronger in the three year aftermath and they are very happy.  I hope this is true.  I love her and I love Josh (he is the only reason I ever watched a Transformer movie)!  I also loved Josh in the movie Life as We Know It with Katherine Heigl which was filmed in Atlanta (ironically the setting of the alleged cheating incident as well).  Onward and upward…

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel have confirmed that they were married this past week in Italy.  Congratulations to them both!  Hope it lasts!  Italy is magical…
