Eli is getting a perm!

Have seen a lot of ads on TV recently (especially during the Emmy’s telecast last night for the upcoming movie Argo coming out October 12th.  It looks like a must see to me.  Ben Affleck wrote, directed and stars in this movie.  He has really become a dedicated and thoughtful film maker, very impressed with him (especially since I have always had a higher regard for his Boston ‘bro” Matt Damon, who is superb of course).  Definitely want to see this movie when it comes out.

Inspiring performance by receiver Torrey Smith last night in the Baltimore upset of New England.  He was playing 24 hours after the tragic death of his younger brother in a motorcycle accident.  The game went right down to the wire, with a barely, I mean barely good game winning field goal giving Baltimore the victory.  Belichick very uncool in grabbing the ref after game.  Pretty surprising.

MNF – Green Bay at Seattle.  Seattle was up 7-0 at half when last checked.  Now in 4th quarter and Green Bay ahead 12-7.  May have to catch this result in the am.  As has been the case so far this season, several bad calls.  Real shame that the replacement referees are affecting both the quality and perhaps outcome of this early portion of the NFL season’s games.  Update: and to the aforementioned point:  The most bizarre finish to a game you can imagine!  Ball was intercepted by Green Bay but called game winning TD for Seattle???

Favorite Peyton Manning and Deion Sanders commercial in the fairy costumes, the newest one, the one where Deion says he misses Eli, wants to know where Eli is, and Peyton says Eli is getting a perm!  (a perm!!, really?)  Too funny!  Gotta love the big bro – little bro dynamic!

I do NOT watch Honey Boo Boo

College Football polls: LSU slips to number 3 while Oregon (after shutting out Arizona) moves up to number 2 behind Alabama.  FSU stays at number 4 after big win over Clemson.  People don’t want to admit it, but media loves the Pac 12, west coast and I think there will be a huge push for some sort of east coast vs. west coast Championship game.  The question is which teams will end up be the chosen ones??

Fed Ex Championship in Atlanta did not turn out to be any thing close to a Rory vs. Tiger shootout.  In fact, both faded quickly on the front nine, Rory finishing at 1 under and Tiger at 2 under.  Still, Rory finished second in the Fed Ex standings and Tiger third.  The grand winner of both the tournament and the Fed Ex Cup, Brandt Snedeker at 11 under.  Very impressive and commanding win.  Nice story about him caring so much about his critically injured “little brother”, actually the son of longtime golf coach who was seriously injured in a car crash and is undergoing treatment at the Shepherd Spinal Center in Atlanta.  Prayers and wishes to him and his family for a full recovery.  Congrats to Brandt who certainly validated his selection to the Ryder Cup team for USA.  The Ryder Cup returns to American soil and will get underway next Saturday.

NFL action today was not without upsets, surprises and validating wins.  Atlanta Falcons showed why they are front runners in their division and one of the real contenders this year with 27-3 win at San Diego (so beautiful there, but really hot right now!).  New Orleans loses in overtime to Kansas City and is now 0-3, are the Saints going to be the “aints” this year?  Peyton leads another fourth quarter comeback that falls short, losing to the Texans who are now 3-0.  Also, Vikings upset San Francisco.  Much more action but onto..

The Emmy’s are on tonight!  This week also marks the big first week for prime time TV show’s returning.  I am looking forward to How I Met Your Mother, Two Broke Girls, Mike and Molly, Two and a Half Men, New Girl, Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Parenthood, The Good Wife, well, I could keep going but then it would beg the question, does she have a life??

For the record, I do NOT watch Honey Boo Boo.  It is bad enough that I even know it exists.

I am crushed, dismayed and horrified… GT vs. Miami game

I am crushed, dismayed and horrified.  I spent this afternoon at the GT vs. Miami game.  What can I say???  We fall behind 19 to 0.  We score 36 unanswered points and take complete control of the game, or so I thought.  Then Miami comes storming back and ties the game with time running out in the 4th quarter.  We go to overtime.  Did GT learn nothing from the awful loss at VT??  You do NOT come away from an overtime possession with 0 points!  4th and 1 at the 2 and we go for it and do not make it.  Then Miami scores and the game is over and we lose.  AWFUL!!  The defense was a huge disappointment, no pressure at all on the Miami quarterback.  That being said, I am going to go back to what I have said from the get go, VAD LEE needs to be the quarterback.  We need a dynamic quarterback that can pass and put some pizzazz in this option offense.  Until this happens…..Just gutwrenching..

Great games going on right now.  Speaking of duds, how about Arkansas, with Tyler Wilson back and still behind??  Clemson leading FSU, WOW, Clemson is surprising me in Tallahassee!!  Notre Dame is leading Michigan.  LSU struggling at home with Auburn, really???  Oregon and Arizona coming up later.

Fed Ex Tour Championship from Atlanta.  Justin Rose now in the lead with Schnedeker.  Ryan Moore in second, Rory right there at 5 under and oh, wait, here comes Tiger back into the mix at 4 under.  I want a Rory – Tiger playoff tomorrow for the for Fex Ex Cup.  Wouldn’t that be great? Number 1 and Number 2, perhaps the past (but still very much the present) and the present and future squaring off for the title.  Here’s hoping for a great day of golf tomorrow in the ATL!

Rutgers does in fact beat Arkansas.  FSU has pulled ahead of Clemson, for now.  What a game.  Great showcase game for the ACC.  (They need one)!  Also, no. 15 Kansas State upsets no. 6 Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma!

FSU pouring it on Clemson now, looks like they are the real deal.  Oregon up 7-0 over Arizona in first half.

Until tomorrow.

Nice hair, [it] really looks nice

Summer is ending, Fall is beginning!  What a weekend of College Football we have coming up!

Who is most likely to pull the upset on the road, I think maybe Michigan at Notre Dame?  Maybe, and very maybe, Clemson at FSU?  Oregon and Arizona should be interesting as well.  I still do not think USC is out of National Championship picture yet.  There are going to be some one loss SEC teams, so what happens with FSU and Clemson and later on when FSU goes to Blacksburg to play VT will be important.

Furyk is now in the lead at the Fed Ex Tour Championship, Kuchar in second, Tiger hanging around.  More to follow.. Tiger double bogeys, Rory eagle putts, things are changing rapidly as one would expect…

NOTE:  This blog which I hope you all are enjoying will soon be moving to its official site.  Please look for it at htpp://sportspopcultureand.survivingparadise.info very soon.  Will keep you posted as to the exact date it will become official.  Thanks for your support!

Missed the back nine today, just enjoyed seeing Problem With The Curve.  Entertaining movie with the always adorable Amy Adams and never fails to deliver Clint Eastwood.  Justin Timberlake, well can take him or leave him, but he is pretty good in the movie.  A great movie for lovers of the great American pastime, ie., Baseball!  Did not get great ratings but that is par for the course, subjective of course, and to each his own.  I enjoyed it.

Back to golf, it appears Tiger took a bit of a stumble, moving down the leaderboard shooting 3 over for the day while Rory came on strong and is 3 under, trailing the leader Jim Furyk who is 7 under followed by Justin Rose at 6 under.  Football and day three of the Tour Championship should make for a huge sports day tomorrow!

Want to share a personal experience I have had today.  For any of you out there who are feeling pulled down by other people’s negativity and manipulative wranglings, things are maybe better than you think.  Have not felt the best the past week or so and recently had my first haircut at a new place (all you gals can relate!).  Anyhow, after the movie I thought about staying in but then decided to walk out and get a bite to eat.  First, the waiter carded me (at my age, always a boost and shock)!  Then, out of the blue the couple behind me got up to leave and the man in a very lovely British accent complimented me on my hair, saying “nice hair, really looks nice”.  So maybe things are never as bad as we think, in spite of some people’s attempts to pull us down.  Just thought I would pass that along for anyone out there who maybe needs a pick up and/or can relate!

Fun time playing together

Thursday night football options: College Football on ESPN features  BYU vs. Bosie State on the blue turf.  NFL network features Eli and the Giants vs. Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers.  Picks?  Boise State at home and Eli and the Giants.  Shall see…

Tour Championship underway at East Lake Country Club in Atlanta, GA.  (This is the only real golf course I have ever played a round of golf on!)  Anyhow, Tiger just missed a putt that would have tied him for lead at 4 under.  He is still at 3 under, one off the lead and playing with Rory.  They seem to have a fun time playing together.  Tiger is playing well as he has consistently done on Thursdays and Fridays, will remain to be seen if he can carry through to the weekend with good play.  He has not done so as much in the past few tournaments.  Matt Kuchar of GT is having a good round, in at 3 under.  GO JACKETS!

Tiger does birdie number 16 and pulls into a tie with Justin Rose at 4 under for the lead. (for now)

Had a chance at both 17 and especially at 18 to take outright lead for day one but failed to do so.  Still very sold first round for Tiger playing along side Rory to finish tied for lead.

I am going to go with NOT!!!!

Well, let’s see, I am at a loss for words today, gee, this never happens to me?  On a personal note, I had a six month check-up visit with my physician, Dr. Chris Crooker at Gwinnett Medical Center Associates.  Everyone should be so lucky to have someone like him and his staff!  Some of the gals there who are Tech fans (some are Dawg fans, but that is ok) and I were talking and we decided that since Pittsburgh would be a member of the ACC starting in 2013, why not go ahead and make that loss by VT to them a “ACC loss”, that way we could hope for one more VT loss (going to happen) and then GT could run the table and be Coastal Division champions.  I like it…

So the “Shark” (aka Greg Norman) speculates that Tiger is intimidated by Rory.  Really?  Really?  I am going to go with NOT!!!!  Wasn’t Greg Norman married to Chrissie Evert for three weeks, or was it three months?  I forget, Oh well.  Tacky, I know.

The championship at East Lake starting tomorrow and should be terrific. Cannot wait!

Oops, another problem for Micheal Turner

Falcons prevail 27-21.  Not quite the exciting barn-burner we had all hoped for.  Broncos made somewhat of a late run but too little too late, plus some great play by the Falcons.  Good win for Atlanta!

Oops, another problem for Micheal Turner early this morning, arrested for DUI.  Not good, victory was a reason to celebrate but still..

Apparently snowboarder Shaun White had a little trouble himself in the early morning hours this past Monday in Nashville.

For all of you fans of The Voice, there will be two new judges this spring.  Shakira and Usher will be replacing Ce Lo and Christina.  I vowed to watch no reality TV shows (except I did watch a bit of Dancing With The Stars when Helio Castroneves was the winner) so I am not qualified to give a comment.  My computer partner is a huge fan of The Voice and he likes the “replacements”.

SportNation fans, what do you think of Beadle’s replacement?  I like Charissa a lot.  I think she and Colin have great chemistry.  I do miss Michelle though.  She and Colin were the originals and I don’t think she is as good on Access as she was on SportsNation.  You cannot blame her however, she loves pop culture and sports (yes!) and she gets to live and work in Manhattan.  I am sure she got a nice pay raise, she is after all represented by CAA.  Lucky girl!

We accept the love we think we deserve

Just caught a few minutes of Anderson Live.  He had Emma Watson on along with the rest of the cast of upcoming movie The Perks of Being A Wallflower (based on book).  Emma is best known to many of us as Hermonine in Harry Potter.  Ironically, I was introduced to Harry Potter by my younger daughter who told me she thought I would really enjoy it and that there was a character that kind of reminded her of me.  Well, I of course rushed out to watch the first movie (and continued on to watch all the movies and read all the books), and within twenty minutes of watching the movie, I realized it was Hermonine, or as I said to her, “it is Hermonine, that precocious know it all little girl, isn’t it?”  Her response was YES.  Anyhow, the Oprah Ah, Ha moment on Anderson today was from a line in this movie,  “We accept the love we think we deserve.”  Roll that around and think about it, quite profound.

Then College Football Live came on so time to switch over.  Appears the SEC clash between South Carolina and Missouri this weekend may involve both teams being without their starting quarterbacks.  Would expect South Carolina to prevail, but of course, we shall see..

Clemson at FSU Saturday night should be a huge and fantastic game.  Expect Georgia Tech to take care of Miami at home.  Hope VT stumbles at least twice and Georgia Tech can win out and take the Coastal Division.  It’s early, I know….

BIG game tonight in Atlanta, Peyton Manning and Denver Broncos here to play Falcons on Monday night football.  Will be back with you as that gets underway..

They started the broadcast with a rendition of “Peyton came down to Georgia…” and then Peyton threw three interceptions.  In his defense, Be Be Thomas (of GT) did drop two passes he should have caught.  Thomas did come through at the end of the half with a brilliant job of getting two feet down on the TD pass.  Never the less, it has been all Atlanta as the third quarter winds down.  The Flacons look really good.  This one will probably not be over until late (tomorrow), after midnight.  Looks like Atlanta will take care of business.  Matt Ryan is running the offense to perfection.

Cheap shot by Buccaneers

In a bit of a surprise, Ryan Hunter-Reay wins Indy Series for 2012.  Interesting…

NFL has been crazy today.  Pats lose, Giants win over Bucs.  Cheap shot by Buccaneers at end of the game when they hit Eli Manning who was attempting to kneel down to end game.  Only thing that has ever really been classy about the Bucs was Tony Dungy.

New Orleans loses another one, this time to Cam Newton and Panthers.

Big game in Atlanta for Monday night football as Peyton Manning and Denver Broncos come to town.

Speaking of Atlanta, how about the Braves, sweeping the Nationals with a 5-1 victory tonight at Turner Field.  The Braves appear to be on a much better path this September than last year!  No collapse in sight.
