Battle in Tally does not disappoint..and more

The Battle in Tally (2 FSU hosting 5 Notre Dame) did not disappoint last night!  FSU trailed for most of the game but came back and then “survived” to win 31-27.  Notre Dame drove down the field and scored what appeared to be the game winning TD on a pass from Golson to Robinson (son of the Admiral, David Robinson who was on the sideline) but alas, some sort of penalty (?) called it back on 4th down and then second attempt resulted in an interception, game over.  It did not disappoint as sometimes happens with these much hyped games.  The only disappointment..the conversation all the world heard as FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher whispered in QB Jameis Winston’s ear after the game…”Humble pie, etc”.  Check Michelle Beadle’s twitter post..it was a classic.  Anyhow.. FSU extends their winning streak to twenty three, the nation’s longest.

Meanwhile, in Gainesville, the Florida Gators were humiliated by Missouri.  A tale of two cities!  Gators fell 42-13.  WOW!

Other games, 4 Baylor lost in Morgantown, 41-27 to the Mountaineers.  Couches were burning I am sure!  TCU rebounded nicely after last week’s loss to the Baylor Bears and defeated OK State, 42-9.  How about Kansas State, defeating Oklahoma in Norman, 31-30.  UGA has no Gurley, but not a problem as they punished Arkansas on the road, 45-32 (it was a much larger deficit earlier).  Frosh RB Chubb rushed for over 200 yards (first time ever for a freshman RB at UGA)  Then there was another loss for my team, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.  This time on the road at Chapel Hill.  They fell to UNC 42-37.  This game was back and forth, over 1200 yards of total offense between the two teams and you knew whoever had the ball last would win.  That would be the Tar Heels.  Coastal Division of the ACC is a mess as per usual.  Dukies continued to impress, defeating UVA 20-13.  UCLA defeated the Cal Bears, 36-34 and Arizona State took care of Stanford at home late last night, 26-10.  Thank heavens for Oregon.  They rolled over Washington at home, 45-20 and Marcus Mariota had 336 yards passing with 2 TDs and no interceptions.  Ole Miss defeated Tennessee 34-3 and they are for real.  And Bama returned to being Bama, demolishing Texas A&M in Tuscaloosa, 59-0.  Clemson defeated Boston College 17-13 and USC (the one in California) defeated Colorado, 56-28.  Whew…what a crazy weekend in CFB yet again!

Latest Polls are out and are as follows!

AP Poll: 1 Miss State (43), 2 FSU (14), 3 Ole Miss (3), 4 Alabama, 5 Auburn, 6 Oregon (welcome back and climbing?), 7 Notre Dame, 8 Michigan State, 9 UGA, 10 TCU.  Baylor is at 12 and Kansas State at 11.

Coaches Poll: 1 Miss State (36), 2 FSU (22), 3 Ole Miss (4), 4 Alabama, 5 Michigan State, 6 Auburn, 7 Oregon, 8 Notre Dame, 9 UGA and 10 TCU.  Kansas State at 11, Ohio State at 12 and Baylor at 13.

OK…Peyton Manning goes for history tonight against the 49ers on MNF.  He needs two TD passes to tie Brett Favre for career TD passes (508).  GO PEYTON!

Thank heavens Roger Federer returns to action next week in his hometown of Basel, Switzerland.  Masters 500 event and Rafael Nadal will be there as well.

Until later…still catching up on some rest after yesterday!

College GameDay heads back to Tally…

College GameDay this Saturday heads back to Tally…and yes, there is still drama in Tally!  Jameis Winston continues to be the “topic of scrutiny” but let’s just focus on FOOTBALL for now.  5 Notre Dame comes a calling on now #2 FSU (Miss State is now #1 in both polls) and the Noles will face off in what is arguably their toughest game (perhaps their only tough game) this year.  So who ya got?  I think the Noles win in Tally.

Other “big” games:  Well, since Mississippi is currently the center of the CFB universe, let’s start with 3 Ole Miss hosting Tennessee.  No upset prediction here, going with the Rebels.  #1 Miss State is off.  4 Baylor visits Morgantown to take on WVU and I am going with Baylor for the win.  7 Alabama will host 21 Texas A&M and inspite of their offensive difficulties last week at Arkansas, the Tide should roll in Tuscaloosa.  Washington visits Eugene to take on the 9 Oregon Ducks and I am with Oregon all the way!  (This game will air at 8:00 pm EST as will Notre Dame vs. FSU)  10 UGA hosts Arkansas, no Gurley but still going with the Dawgs.  14 Kansas State will play at 11 Oklahoma…this one could be interesting but I think the Sooners win at home.  15 Oklahoma State visits 12 TCU and after last week’s disappointing loss to Baylor, I think the Horn Frogs will win at home.  Late night game, Pac 12 of course, 23 Stanford hosts 17 Arizona State.  Um…going to pick the Cardinals at home.  Also, Georgia Tech, after very disappointing loss to Duke at home will travel to Chapel Hill to take on North Carolina.  I think the Jackets rebound and win!

Congrats to the San Francisco Giants (and my buddy Turk, see my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver) as they advance to the World Series to face the Kansas City Royals (undefeated in the playoffs).  Ishikawa hit a walk off three run homer last night to send the Giants into the World Series…awesome!!

Next week, tennis returns (well, actually Roger Federer returns to action) in Basel, Switzerland.  This is a Masters 500 event but many big names will be there as the race to the Year End Finals in London continues.  Roger always plays this event, it is his hometown afterall.  Rafael Nadal will be there, inflamed appendix and all.  Reports are conflicted regarding Rafa, some indicating he will have surgery and miss the Year End Finals, others saying he is undecided.  Anyhow, a Roger – Rafa final in Basel would be quite nice.  Dimitrov, Raonic, Nishikori and others will be there.  Djokovic will sit this one out.

Happy Friday everyone!

Keeping it short and sweet, Survivng Paradise Wednesday

Hey guys!  Keeping it short and sweet this Wednesday, otherwise known as Surviving Paradise day!!

Check out my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.  Follow a southern woman who relocates to a new town in southwest Florida full of great expectations – only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances.  The people, the misadventures, the neighbors and the neighborhood mayhem, the cast of characters…well it is a guaranteed raucous good read!  It is available at Amazon.com for $8.99 in paperback and $3.03 in kindle edition.  For more info, check out the HOME page at this website and the BUY THE BOOK option on the menu bar!  THANKS!!

Tonight for our TV viewing pleasure..The Mysteries of Laura on NBC at 8:00 pm EST.  Critics hate it but people love it!  What is not to like about Debra Messing and Josh Lucas? (not a thing!!)  At 10:00 pm EST, ABC offers a new episode of Nashville.  This one is beloved by the critics and the people! (including me)

For a chuckle..saw an episode of Highly Questionable on ESPN2 today where there seems to be some outrage that a public poll declares the Denver Broncos are now “America’s Team” over the Dallas Cowboys!  Well, the Cowboys were never my team, but they did hold the previous aforementioned title.  It has to be the Peyton Manning factor, don’t you think?  Oh well, I am just saying, almost everyone loves Peyton! (including me)

That’s all for today folks.  Enjoy your Wednesday!

Tuesday sports and pop culture

Tuesday sports and pop culture news….where to begin?  How about the state of Mississippi!  They have now become the center of the universe in CFB right now!  Who would have thought it before the season started?  Probably some Miss State and Ole Miss fans!  Anyhow, Miss State is #1 in both the AP and Coaches Poll and Ole Miss is #3 in both.  WOW!  Still..a whole lot of football to be played by both these teams against some tough SEC opponents.  Not to mention..The Egg Bowl at the end of the season.  That should be something special, especially if both teams continue their winning ways!

I do agree with the comments by one ESPN analyst..Why when a Pac-12 team loses do they drop six or seven spots in the rankings while when an SEC team loses, they only drop two or three?  Pac-12 football still does not seem to get the respect it deserves..but it is getting better and being acknowledged as a great college football conference!  (GO DUCKS)

Moving to Pop Culture news…Nice reunion last night on Kimmel..Shia LeBeouf (Fury) and Michelle Monaghan (The Best of Me) who both have movies coming out this weekend.  They starred together a few years back in Eagle Eye (saw it!)  Shia will have a co-star in Fury, you may have heard of him..Brad Pitt.  Michelle will star in yet another of the movies based on a Nicholas Sparks book.  The funniest part of the show…the NBA stars “Book Club” on Nicholas Sparks books with an appearance by Sparks himself.  Hilarious!  Hope to see both movies…at the theater not near me of course as the theater near me is still not reopened!  Also, have the book The Best of Me but am only halfway through Gone Girl (saw the movie but am still making my way through the book).  I am now on part two…where the “real Amy” begins to emerge.

TV on Tuesday.. New Girl, the Mindy Project, and Chicago Fire.  Those are on my schedule.  I just love “Chase” from House on Chicago Fire!  Also, drumroll please…About A Boy returns tonight (DVR already set).  It is back and I cannot wait!

Until later…

Saturday sports final..on Sunday

Saturday sports final is necessary since three games were not yet completed when I last posted.  7 Alabama held on to defeat Arkansas, 14-13.  3 Ole Miss took care of 14 Texas A&M at College Station, 35-20 (how about those teams from Mississippi!!) and late, late, last night, USC upset 10 Arizona, 28-26.  As a result of yesterday’s action…surprise there is a new #1, at least in one poll!

The Coaches Poll is out (AP Poll not yet out) and Miss State is the new, current #1 team in CFB.  The Poll is as follows: 1 Miss State (26), 2 FSU (31), 3 Ole Miss (5), 4 Baylor (what a come from behind win over TCU), 5 Notre Dame, 6 Michigan State, 7 Alabama, 8 Auburn, 9 Oregon (welcome back to the top ten!!) and 10 UGA.

In tennis news…Roger Federer defeated G. Simon 7-6, 7-6 to win the Rolex Masters event in Shanghai.  Was a bit of a sluggish match, especially after the drama and energy of yesterday’s awesome semifinal victory over Novak Djokovic.  Simon is a baseline player and the rallies were sometimes long and tedious.  Federer non the less avoided a let down after yesterday’s huge victory and has started his indoor hard court season off with a great win and his fourth title of the year.  ROGER THAT!

OK, Broncos and Peyton are in NY facing the Jets right now…lead 17-7 with 8 seconds left in the first half.  Cutler and the Bears face Matt Ryan and the Falcons in the ATL later today.  Also, replay of the Shanghai final is airing on Tennis Channel (2:30 pm EST)

New episode of the Good Wife on tonight…over and out!  Enjoy your Sunday!

Saturday CFB and tennis, where do I begin?

Oh my goodness, Saturday college football and tennis from Shanghai Masters..where do I begin?  Well, of course with Roger Federer!

Federer was magnificent in defeating Novak Djokovic in two sets, 6-4, 6-4…perfect was the description Nole gave Fed in the post match interview.  One of the most awesome displays of serve and volley tennis in years..from Federer!  The maestro will face G. Simon tomorrow in the final. Simon defeated F. Lopez, 6-2, 7-6.  Have to predict a Federer title in Shanghai tomorrow!!!

Moving to college football…another weekend of craziness and it is not over yet!  First off, Georgia Tech loses to Duke (I was supposed to be there but the tickets got lost in the mail, thank heavens!)  The Jackets finally enter the top 25 for the first time in three years and fall at home to Duke, 31-25.  There was an hour plus lightening delay and a whole lot of bad penalties against the Jackets and when all was said and done after five long hours, a really bad loss for GT and an impressive performance by Duke.  Thanks to backup QB Tim Byerly, GT made the final score respectable.  Really unfortunate loss for GT (and disappointing!)

13 UGA without Todd Gurley had no problem at Missouri, running away from the Tigers, 34-0.  1 FSU took care of Syracuse, 38-20 and inspite of the controversy surrounding Jameis Winston, he had a 300+ day passing and the Noles have the longest winning streak in the nation.  My other team, 12 Oregon defeated 18 UCLA in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl (it was so beautiful there!), 42-18.  Great day for M. Mariota, 200+ yards passing, 74 yards rushing, 4 TDs and 121 yards rushing for RB Freeman with 2 TDs.  Really like Brett Hundley for UCLA but Mariota was the guy today!  Now, if Oregon can win out and maybe get another shot at 10 Arizona (play at USC late tonight) for the Pac 12 title, then I can keep them in my final four where I want them!

How about those Bulldogs…no, not the ones from UGA but the 3 Miss State Bulldogs.  They defeated 2 Auburn, 38-23 and they are for real.  They have now won three games against top ten rated teams!  Congrats to Dan Mullen and the Miss State Bulldogs.  6 Notre Dame survived at home against a gallant effort from North Carolina, winning 50-43.  The game of the day so far for sure…9 TCU at 5 Baylor.  Baylor came back from a 21 point deficit to win with a field goal as time expired, 61-58.  What a game (I have Baylor in the ‘final four”).  Six TDs for QB B. Petty for Baylor.  Heartbreaking loss for TCU.

Friday night, 25 Stanford won over Washington State, 34-17 with Tiger Woods on the sideline.  7 Alabama currently trails at Arkansas, 13-7 in the third quarter.  3 Ole Miss vs. 13 Texas A&M still to come along with late night game, 10 Arizona at USC.  Whew…what a Saturday once again!

I am ready to watch the replay of Federer taking out Djokovic.  Never get tired of seeing Federer magic!

Later…

While I was sleeping, excuse me writing, Bama just went ahead of Arkansas, 14-13.

What’s in store for us on Saturday? CFB and more

What’s in store for us this Saturday as College Football action resumes?  After last weekend, heaven only knows!!  The action actually cranks up tonight on ESPN as Washington State visits 25 Stanford in a Pac 12 matchup.  Pick…Stanford?  Washington State sure was impressive against Oregon but I am going to go with the Cardinals in Palo Alto.

Saturday…nice slate of games on tap!  13 UGA visits 23 Missouri in a big SEC East battle.  UGA will be without the services of star RB Todd Gurley, suspended indefinitely due to an issue regarding autographs for pay?  Anyhow…still think the Dawgs are the favorite.  7 Alabama will lick their wounds after falling at Ole Miss last weekend and head to Arkansas, should prevail as well.  3 Ole Miss meanwhile will take on 14 Texas A&M (also lost last weekend) and I am going with the Rebels.  Should be a good one, however.  USC will be at 19 Arizona in another Pac 12 game…Arizona??? or does USC “upset” them.  Probably not.  Big game for Oregon, looking to get back into the “final four picture” as the 12 Ducks take on 18 UCLA in LA.  Who ya got…Oregon!  9 TCU at 5 Baylor…should be one heck of a game but I will go with Baylor for the win.  Finally, 2 Auburn at 3 Miss State.  This is a very intriguing game, a toss up and while Auburn is the slight favorite, give me Miss State at home (those cow bells are SO loud!)

Meanwhile, I will be at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Grant Field for a 12:30 kickoff between Duke and 23 Georgia Tech.  GO JACKETS.  Georgia Tech needs to win this game (and it will not be easy) and then beat UVA and Pitt and that would lock up the ACC Coastal Division title.  First things first however, will try to tweet out some updates and pics from the ATL tomorrow early afternoon!!

In tennis action from Shanghai, the semifinals are now set.  The semifinal we would all really like to see as the final will be the second one on tap tomorrow (10:00 am EST on Tennis Channel) between Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.  Federer is seeded #3 and Novak #1 as current #2 Rafael Nadal tried to play with an inflamed appendix and went out in the first round.  Thus, Fed and Nole are in the same side of the draw.  (Roger will move to #2 in the world on Monday, regardless of the outcome!)  Anyhow, I will watch and then DVR as I must head out to the GT game before the match is over.  Roger had a great first set against Benneteau today, winning in a tie break, 7-6 and then rolled him in the second set 6-0.  Nole defeated Ferrer, 6-4, 6-2.  G. Simon took out Thomas Berdych in three sets and F. Lopez defeated M. Youzhny in three sets so Simon and Lopez will face off very early in the first semifinal.  Should be a great semifinal match between Federer (playing really well after looking a little rusty in his first match back after vacation) and #1 Djokovic.

Until later…Happy Friday!

Apologies to Seminole Nation…#1 FSU vs. Syracuse also on at noon Saturday. I am going to pick the Noles!

Wednesday, Surviving Paradise day, the most favorite…

Hello everyone..it is Wednesday, Surviving Paradise day, the most favorite day of the week!! (?)  Well, it is hump day for sure!  Anyhow..it is that day I promote my book/story Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.  Please check is out at Amazon.com..see the HOME page at this website and the BUY THE BOOK option on the menu bar.  Very funny and entertaining story about a southern woman relocating to a new town (in Florida, duh) and meeting a ridiculous set of people and circumstances.  Should be a movie or a sitcom..hey, I am just saying…… Meanwhile…

Roger Federer returned to action today at the Rolex Shanghai Masters Tennis Tournament and what a tremendous match between him and L. Mayer!  Mayer played a superb match but the maestro pulled one of his patented Houdini acts and survived…7-5, 3-6, 7-6.  Fed saved five match points in the third set tie break alone.  Mayer was in tears when they met at the net after the match.  Had to feel for him but…it is for me, always about Roger Federer.  One of the funniest banners in the crowd said…I love Roger Federer more than free WiFi!  Wherever he plays, he is the crowd favorite!!

Rafael Nadal battling an inflamed appendix, lost in two sets to F. Lopez, 3-6, 6-7.  Really tough luck for Rafa, coming back from a right wrist injury and now this health problem.  Treating it with antibiotics but gee, have to think surgery is going to be necessary.  WOW!  Novak Djokovic had an entertaining match with D. Thiem and won 6-3, 6-4.  Stan Wawrinka lost in three sets to G. Simon of France, K. Nishikori was upset in two sets by Jack Sock (USA) and David Ferrer won in three sets while G. Dimitrov lost in two sets to J. Benneteau of France.  Andy Murray won in two sets and looked the best he has in a while.  Next up tomorrow for Mr. Federer, Bautista-Agut.  Hoping for a Djokovic – Federer final everyone? (Will have to be a semifinal, 2 Rafa played and lost so 1 Nole and 3 Fed in same bracket!)

TV tonight..a new episode of Nashville on ABC at 10:00 pm EST.  Also, the critically panned but hugely popular Mysteries of Laura on NBC at 8:00 pm EST.

See ya later…..

Hotty Toddy and so much chaos!

Hotty Toddy and 11 Ole Miss beats 3 Bama, 23-17, (Katy Perry was adorable on College  GameDay live from Oxford, MS) and that is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the chaos that took place this past weekend in college football action.  It began on Thursday night when Marcus Mariota and the 2 Oregon Ducks went down in Eugene to undefeated and unranked Arizona, 31-24.  Picking up with the Saturday action, never have so many top ranked teams lost!  6 Texas A & M was rolled by 12 Miss State, 48-31, big day for the teams from Mississippi!  4 Oklahoma lost to 25 TCU, 37-33 in a close one and oh, my the Pac 12!  You think the teams in the SEC beat up on each other, well they do so as well in the Pac 12.  Arizona State defeated 16 USC, 38-34 on a Hail Mary TD pass with time expiring!  Are you kidding me? And then, 8 UCLA goes down to Utah on a last second field goal (two attempts), 30-28.

Holding steady, 5 Auburn decimated 15 LSU 41-7, 7 Baylor took care of Texas, 28-7 (apparently that pep talk by Matthew McConaughey was all for naught, but hey, I love Matthew McConaughey!), and 1 FSU and 13 UGA both were at the bakery playing cupcakes and won respectively, FSU 43-3 over Wake Forest and UGA blew out Vandy 44-17.  In a defensive battle, perhaps one of the hardest fought games of the day, 14 Stanford fell to 9 Notre Dame, 17-14.  Whew…what a Saturday of college football on the first weekend in October!

Plus, I must add that Georgia Tech defeated Miami, 28-17 in the ATL!  They have lost the past five games to the Hurricanes but not last night in a “white-out” at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Grant Field.  The Jackets are now 5-0, one of only ten remaining undefeated teams.  As a result, Georgia Tech welcomes themselves to the top twenty five today for the first time this season!

Latest AP and Coaches Polls are out and here are the top ten in each! AP Poll: 1 FSU (35), 2 Auburn (23), 3 Miss State, 4 Ole Miss, 5 Baylor, 6 Notre Dame, 7 Alabama (highest ranked one loss team), 8 Michigan State, 9 TCU, and 10 Arizona (from unranked to #10!)

Coaches Poll top ten: 1 FSU (44), 2 Auburn (16), 3 Baylor, 4 Ole Miss, 5 Notre Dame, 6 Miss State, 7 Alabama, 8 Michigan State, 9 Oklahoma, and 10 UGA.

Oregon is #12 in the AP Poll, #11 in the Coaches Poll, UCLA is #18 in the AP Poll and #17 in the Coaches Poll, and Stanford is #25 in AP Poll, #23 in Coaches Poll.  And at last, Georgia Tech joins the party!  #22 in the AP Poll and #23 in the Coaches!  Welcome.

We must remember, there is a whole lot of football still to be played.  Todd Gurley, RB UGA appears to now be the front runner for the Heisman.  I am still hoping for Marcus Mariota.

Change of pace,  new episode of The Good Wife airs tonight on CBS and tomorrow, Shanghai Masters Tennis event gets underway…and yes, Roger Federer will be there.  So glad, I really need some Federer time!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

Oregon on outside looking in after loss, Gone Girl

2 Oregon is now on the outside looking in after a bad loss at home last night to undefeated Arizona, 31-24.  Oregon has struggled the past couple of weeks or so, injuries to their depleted offensive line have made things tough for QB Marcus Mariota (is he still the Heisman favorite, I want it for him) and last night was the same story…multiple sacks and turnovers.  The Oregon defense gave up over 500 yards of offense to Arizona in Autzen Stadium.  With this loss, they fall out of the projected final four in this first year of the College Football playoff and inaugural Championship game.  Still..more football to be played.  A lot of important games tomorrow, especially in the SEC.  If the Pac 12 teams beat up on each other as the SEC teams do…who knows what will happen?  Very disappointed for the Ducks…wanted to see them keep it going!

Saw Gone Girl today at the theater not near me.  Have to admit this theater not near me is wearing on me.  Really wish they would finish renovating the theater near me!  Anyhow, this movie was chilling, a true up close and personal look at the mind of a sociopath.  Amy, can never be “Amazing Amy” as portrayed in the books written by her “perfect” parents.  Her husband Nick (Ben Affleck) is much more of a regular guy but the pressure of the marriage to Amy does not bring out the best in him.  But we all know (those of us who have read and/or are reading the book), he is not a murderer.  He is some things, but not that.  Don’t want to give too much away, also the ending is not the same as the book (no surprise there, when is it ever?)  Really tremendous performances by supporting cast of Neil Patrick Harris and Tyler Perry.  Still, troubling movie in some respects, really showcases how manipulative and cruel some relationships can be.  I need some light, feel good entertainment after this move.  Oh yes, the return of The Last Man Standing with Tim Allen should fit the bill!

Until later…
