TV icon passes away

Sad day for those of us who loved One Day at a Time.  Bonnie Franklin, who played Ann Romano, the single mom to the characters portrayed by Valerie Bertinelli and McKenzie Phillips has passed away at the age of 69.  She suffered from pancreatic cancer.  Very tragic news, what great memories I have of watching her and her two daughters along with the apartment superintendent and all of their entertaining storylines.  Condolences to all who knew her and loved her.

Leaderboard from the Honda Golf Classic

At the end of the second day of play in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Luke Guthrie sits atop the leaderboard at -9.  Michael Thompson and Graham Delaet are tied for second at -8.  Lee Westwood, Greg Oglivy, Doug LaBelle II, Charles Howell III, Sean O’Hair, and Justin Rose are sitting at -6.  Tiger parred the 18th hole to finish with a round of 70, even for the tournament and will play this weekend.  The cut is at even par.  As reported earlier, Rory Mcilroy withdrew due to pain from a wisdom tooth ailment.  All in all, a bit anticlimactic to the anticipated second week of golf play with both Tiger and Rory in the field.  Oh well, perhaps Tiger can make things interesting this weekend?  Nine back of the leader but not impossible.

World #1 Rory Mcilroy withdraws from the Honda Classic

World #1 Rory Mcilroy withdrew from the Honda Classic golf tournament in Palm Beach Gardens, FL today.  Rory was +7 after eight holes and instead of heading to the tee at the ninth, he headed to his car.  Mcilroy cited a painful wisdom tooth as the reason for his exit, indicating he was due to have the tooth removed in April.  He apologized for not being able to complete his quest to defend his title at the Honda Classic explaining he was simply unable to play threw the pain.  Anyone who has had a toothache can sympathize,  teeth pain ranks right up there with labor pains!  Leaderboard and Tiger watch to follow…

Vintage Kobe Bryant performance, Lakers win

Kobe Bryant put on a “vintage Kobe” performance last night in the Staples Center as the Lakers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves, 116 – 94.  Kobe had 33 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists.  Dwight Howard had 11 points, 13 rebounds, Steve Nash added 10 points and 7 assists, Jamison contributed 17 points and 8 rebounds off the bench.  Meeks (former Kentucky star) also threw in 16 points off the bench.  Timberwolves’ injured star Kevin Love was in attendance, still recovering from a broken right hand.  The Lakers have won 12 of their last 17 and 5 of their last 7 as they are now within two games of the Houston Rockets, currently in the #8 playoff position.  Remember, Kobe, Dwight and Nash have guaranteed us the Lakers will make the playoffs.  Next up for the Lakers at home, the Atlanta Hawks.  I gotta say. I think the Lakers will get it done.  I also think they need Pau Gasol back.  Stay tuned…Oh yes, Kobe is now the Zen Mamba!

Atlanta Falcons make some changes

The Atlanta Falcons cut three veteran players today, RB Michael Turner (not Turner the Burner!), CB Dunta Robinson, and DE John Abraham.  This was described as a cost cutting measure in addition to the Falcons attempting to build a younger team.  The Falcons were one of the oldest teams in the NFL last year.  Still, it is hard to see these three veteran players go.  I understand the Falcons are looking for more breakaway speed at the running back position to compliment the passing game of Matt Ryan to Jones, White and company.  Still, change is hard, especially when these guys have been such an integral part of the Falcons organization.  Hope this works out well for the Falcons in the upcoming NFL season!

Federer upset by Berdych in simis at Dubai

2 Roger Federer lost in three sets in the semifinals at Dubai to Thomas Berdych, 6 -3, 6 -7, 4- 6 Frown  Very disappointing as a Federer fan and also I think for those of us who wanted to see a 1 Djokovic vs. 2 Federer final.  Not to disparage Berdych, but tomorrow’s final likely will be a blowout!  Federer vs. Djokovic could have been a different story for us all to watch and enjoy.  Djokovic easily dispatched of Del Potro, 6 -3,  7 -6 earlier.  Federer came out strong and took the first set 6 -3.  Then, as seems to happen quite often, Federer sort of relaxed, got a bit sloppy and got broken in the 6th game of the second set.  Federer came on to break back and force the set to a tiebreaker.  Berdych saved a couple of match points and prevailed in the tiebreaker.  In all fairness, Fed benefited from a poor line call, the ball was out, so maybe Berdych deserved to win that second set when all was said and done.  Very disappointed to see Fed drop the third set, 4 -6.  So, no final for Federer tomorrow.  Fed has not reached a final yet in 2013 and this was his first loss ever in the semis at Dubai.  Tomorrow it will be 1 Djokovic vs. 3 Berdych for the Dubai Championships final.  As a loyal and devoted Federer fan, I am sad.  Fed did change up the uniform a bit today, came out in white shorts, blue shirt and the bright pink shoelaces were missing.  Perhaps he should have stuck with them?  Just being a bit superstitious!

Thursday night sports updates

Thank you Josh.  Yes, 15 Ohio State prevailed over Northwestern in college basketball, 63 – 53.  I have been saying that the Big Ten is very deep this year!  A force to be reckoned with for sure in the tourney.  Also, North Carolina over Clemson, 68 – 59.  Currently, 3 Duke is in a tussle at UVA, trailing at halftime 28 – 23.  Still, a second half to be played.

Coming up at 10:30pm EST Kobe and the Lakers will host the Minnesota Timberwolves.  Must win the the Lakers.

Gotta be honest, replay of Fed over Davydenko on Tennis Channel was on and I could not help myself.  When Federer plays like he played today, he is simply sublime.  Hope he can keep it up!

Update: Down goes the Dukies on the road at UVA, 73 – 68.  Joe Harris scores 36 points for Virginia.  My, oh my, what a crazy year in college basketball!

Nashville on ABC continues to deliver

ABC hit new drama Nashville starring Connie Britton among others aired last night and once again, it delivered the goods.  This show continues to surprise and amaze.  Juliette throws Deacon a surprise birthday bash at the infamous Bluebird Cafe.  Deacon does not like surprises, especially on his birthday as he prefers to stay home and watch the movie Old Yeller.  (Love it!)  He shows up and is a good sport, even has a good time.  Juliette’s mom falls off the wagon and has to be carried out back to Juliette’s place.  Surprisingly, Juliette goes with her and is very compassionate.  She later has a dog (think old yeller) delivered by her assistant to Deacon as a b’day gift.  Perhaps Deacon’s other b’day gift was Rayna showing up at his bash.  In spite of the paparazzi and tabloid coverage hounding her and her girls over her divorce from hubby and new mayor, Teddy, Rayna decides to show up in support of her longtime friend/music collaborator and former lover.  She shares a tender moment with him after performing a new song she has written and dedicates it to him.  Teddy has continued to evolve, standing up to Lamar and adding old girlfriend/current lover, Peggy to his staff.  It would appear Teddy has grown a pair and it is not a temporary development.  Ignoring Lamar’s request for an appointment to deputy mayor, Teddy calls in old rival and longtime friend of Rayna (also Deacon’s sponsor) Coleman, and offers him the appointment to deputy mayor.  Way to go Teddy!  Meanwhile, Gunnar’s wayward brother winds up dead and beaten after Gunnar has a face off with him.  Gunnar is devastated, feeling once again he has abandoned his older brother.  Scarlett comforts him, and I do mean comforts him.  This show will resume next week, and more trouble, heartache, drama, and hopefully some happiness and joy will be in store for us.
