Tuesday night madness results

March madness is still a bit away but last night there were some great games that one can only hope are precursors of what we have to look forward to when we complete the journey to the tourney.

1 Indiana survived 4 Michigan State in East Lansing, 72 – 68.  Wild and crazy finish to this game as Michigan State had pulled ahead and Indiana went on a 9 – 1 run late in the game.  The game remained in doubt until the very end, and who would believe Indiana would foul on a 3 point shot with a three point lead on the road??  But, first free throw missed, second one made, and third one missed on purpose, rebound Indiana, game over!  Huge road win for Indiana as they take a one game lead in the Big Ten standings.

Elsewhere, 2 Miami survived a scare from UVA in Miami, overcoming a tremendous effort by the undersized Cavaliers to win 54 – 50.  Again, down to the wire.  Miami has now won fourteen games in a row and remains atop the ACC with an unblemished record.   5 Florida was not so lucky, going down on the road at Missouri, 63 – 60.  Missouri stays undefeated at home.

In Atlanta, Georgia Tech fell to North Carolina, 70 – 58.  Another poor free throw shooting performance by the Jackets, going 0 for 8 in the first.  The second half was marred by too many turnovers for GT and they fall to4 – 9 in ACC play.  North Carolina maintains its position in the upper tier of the ACC.

Azarenka withdraws from Dubai

World #2 Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from this weekend’s Dubai Championships due to a bone bruise on her right foot.  She will travel to the US to have it evaluated.  She could have regained the world top ranking had she reached the finals and Serena Williams (who became the oldest woman at 31 to regain the #1 ranking this past Monday) failed to do so.  Now, Serena will likely remain at #1 as the entire women’s field looks to the Paribas Open at Indian Wells, CA in early March.  Azarenka has said she plans to play at Indian Wells.  The race for #1 in women’s tennis player remains very close!  Still disappointing, would have been nice to see Serena and Azarenka face off again possibly in the final of this event in Dubai.

Johnny Manziel – life under a microscope

Heisman Award winner Johnny Manziel, sophomore QB for Texas A & M is learning a bit about the downside of fame.  The current Heisman award winner has been photographed and criticized sitting front row a Dallas Maverick game and partying in New Orleans during the Super Bowl and at Mardi Gras.  Yes, Johnny, the world is full of haters!! People love to tear down and belittle the behavior of successful people and that is truly unfortunate.  Not to say that those who are successful and high profile athletes do not have some sort of obligation to try and be judicious in their behavior.  They are perceived as role models for young people, but then again Johnny Manziel is a 20 year old himself.  There was a article at ESPN.com that reported that he would only be on campus once a month this semester and he is taking four classes online.  Who are we to say negative things about him and/or his schedule?  Clearly, he is eligible, correct?   Johnny and Texas A & M are expected to have a great year in 2013 and then one more year for this young man and likely a huge NFL paycheck.  Kudos to him.  He is hopefully thick skinned enough to enjoy himself as a young man and college student and one day he will have the opportunity to give back and help others who are following in his footsteps.

CBB – Three top five teams in action tonight

Three top five college basketball teams are in action tonight!  1 Indiana will take on 4 Michigan State and 5 Florida will travel to Missouri.  Two tough road games, one Big Ten and the other SEC.  Also, 2 Miami will host UVA tonight.

A little bonus…Magic Johnson will be in the house for the Indiana vs. Michigan State match up.  Johnson is a Michigan State alum and he will be calling the game tonight on ESPN, first time ever as a play by play commentator for a college basketball game!

A lot of talk today regarding the debacle that was and is the NCAA investigation into the scandal allegations and improprieties at the University of Miami AND the inappropriate behavior of members of the NCAA investigating team.  This is such a muddled mess, you really have to read numerous articles and figure it out for yourselves.  Needless to say, Miami has been in violation of NCAA rules, and the NCAA behaved less than ethically in their investigation.  The Vice President of Enforcement for the NCAA has been fired and all of his superiors have been “cleared” of any wrong doing.  This is all up for debate.  One very interesting article is entitled “Prez Leaves Accountability to Others”.  That refers to President Mark Emmert of the NCAA.  Have to wonder if he will emerge from this unscathed in the long run.

Anyhow, it is one ugly, huge mess.  By the way, I am all too familiar with a Prez and a lack of accountability…see my book Surviving “Paradise” available at Amazon.com.  It isn’t Wednesday, the day I plug my book, but hey, I could not help myself, the opportunity was there and I took it!

Sad news out of LA, Dr. Jerry Buss passes away

Sad news out of LA.  The longtime owner of the LA Lakers, Dr. Jerry Buss has passed away at the age of 80.  He has battled an undisclosed form of cancer for quite awhile.  Dr. Buss has owned the Lakers since 1979 and is attributed with bringing “Showtime” to LA and the Staples Center (first the Forum).  Hey, I remember, who could forget?  I loved to watch “Jack” in the crowd and hear them chant “I love LA”.  He was owner of this franchise while it recorded ten NBA titles and as of late late had turned over the management of the team to his children, Jim Buss, who was in charge of basketball operations, and his daughter, Jeanie (longtime girlfriend of former Lakers coach Phil Jackson) who handled the business side of the franchise.  I am sure the Lakers’ organization is in mourning today over the passing of their longtime and very successful leader.   Condolences to his family and the Lakers.

NBA All Star Game

NBA All Star game was on in all its glory (?) last night.  You all saw it, or perhaps not.  Anyhow, as far as NBA All Star games go, it was actually a good one with the Western Conference All Stars wining for the third year in a row, 143 –  128.  Clearly, there is not a lot of defense played in this game.  Non the less, it was entertaining and close.  The Eastern All Stars were lead by Carmelo Anthony with 26 points, Dwyane Wade with 21 points and LeBron James with 19 points (more on that later).  The Western Conference All Stars were led by Kevin Durant with 30 points, MVP Chris Paul with 20 points and 15 assists, and Blake Griffin with 19 points.  Kobe Bryant had 9 points with 9 assists.  Perhaps the most interesting “defense” occurred in the 4th period when Kobe decided to guard LeBron and make it a little bit personal.  There had been much talk during the week celebrating Michael Jordan’s 50th birthday about who was the heir apparent, Kobe or LeBron.  MJ had chimed in and chosen Kobe.  Kobe decided to take the whole All Star mentality to another level and guarded LeBron in the 4th period, blocking a shot in classic Kobe style and limiting LeBron’s production.  Classic Kobe, always the competitor.  Not too bad a game all in all, given that All Star games are usually full of showboating and one ups man ship!
