Two MLB legends pass

Last week much of the sport coverage was on the doping (Lance) and the duping (Te’o) and while this was getting so much press, two huge MLB legends passed away.  Stan Musial, long time outfielder with the St. Louis Cardinals, a legend there, passed away at the age of 92.  He was a first ballot Hall of Famer, seven time batting champ, and never a hint of controversy touched him.  Also, Ed Weaver, long time manager of the Baltimore O’s and a Hall of Fame member passed away at age 82.  Two exemplary and much beloved ambassadors of their sport died last week and baseball loyalists remember and mourn.

Epic match from down under

Last night, or in the wee hours of the morning, depending on where one lives, an epic match in the round of sixteen took place between world #1 Djokovic and the other Swiss, #15 Wawrinka.  What was expected to be a routine match turned into a 5 hour marathon match and one for the ages.  Djokovic prevailed, 1 – 6, 7 – 5, 6 – 4, 6- 7, 12 – 10.  No one should have to lose a match like this one.  Wawrinka was brilliant and Djoker showed his superb return and defensive skills, especially in the final and deciding game when he broke Wawrinka to take the match.  You could not help but see the pain Wawrinka felt after the match as there were tears in his eyes as he left the court to a rousing ovation (almost 2:00 am local time).  Congrats to Novak, but I have to say, I could have done without a repeat of the shirt ripping, chest pumping display (now we need to ask ourselves, What would Roger do?  Not that!)  Anyhow, Mr. Federer will be back in action tonight (wee hours, sometime, darn this time difference!) against Raonic and it will be a tough one for Fed.  Expect him to pull through and advance to the quarterfinals.  He has the most difficult and challenging bracket of the top four seeds.

In other action, Ferrer won in three sets, Berdych advanced and will play Djokovic in the quarters, Sharapova rolled to another easy victory, Li Na is into the quarterfinals, and very quietly, Radwanska continues to impress as she advances by defeating Ivanovic in two sets.

Rest of this afternoon becomes about NFL action, so get ready and enjoy.  But later, at least for me, it becomes all about Mr. Federer!

No fun to be no. 1 in College Basketball

After reaching the #1 ranking this past Monday, Louisville falls at home to 6 Syracuse, 70 – 68.  Does not take long to fall in the topsy turvy world of college basketball.  4 Kansas avoids an upset by defeating Texas, 64 – 59.  On the rise, 21 Oregon defeats 24 UCLA 76 – 67.  Pac 12 college basketball is on it’s way back to significance!  Elsewhere, North Carolina defeats Maryland, 10 Florida hammers 17 Missouri, 83 – 52.  In action right now, 11 Ohio State and 10 Michigan State (Michigan State up 13 – 11 very early).  Later, 13 Butler vs. 8 Gonzaga.

A couple more ACC scores, VT 66 – Wake Forest 65 and Virginia 56 – FSU 36.  Really?  36 points for the whole game…

Another final: 18 Michigan State 59 – 11 Ohio State 56 (at Ohio State, hard to win on the road!)  And in an unbelievable final, especially the last minute of the game, 13 Butler defeats 8 Gonzaga, 64 – 63.  The final few seconds of this game are worth watching on ESPN highlight reel at least a couple of times!  Butler is now 16 – 2.

Ugly story out of San Fran

Bit of an ugly story out of San Francisco as we approach the NFL title game tomorrow between the Falcons and the 49ers.  San Francisco WR Micheal Crabtree is under investigation for an alleged (remember, alleged) sexual assault which reportedly occurred last Sunday in a city hotel in downtown San Fran.  It is being investigated by the San Francisco police.  No charges have been filed yet and Crabtree will play in tomorrow’s game.  If it happens to be true, well, YUK!

NFL tomorrow!

Hard to believe that we have now arrived at the conference championship games, then a short break, then the Super Bowl from New Orleans.  But, that is where we are in the NFL this season.  Tomorrow, first up at 3:00 pm EST, San Francisco visits Atlanta for the NFC championship game.  This one could be really interesting!  San Francisco comes into Atlanta as a favorite (bit of an insult to the Falcons since they are the #1 seed and have a really good dome record).  Kaepernick could pose all kinds of problems for the Atlanta defense. Also, the question of John Abraham and his ankle will be relevant to the Falcons and their defensive performance.  Hard to call this game.  As a Falcon fan, I want to say Atlanta!  I want to see Matt Ryan and company finally make that push through the great regular seasons and make it to the Super Bowl.  It will either be really close, or kind of ugly for the Falcons I think.  OK, I am going to be a “homer”, and say FALCONS!

Next up tomorrow, Baltimore and Ray Lewis on his “farewell tour” visit Tom Brady and the New England Patriots (I was going to say pretty boy Tom Brady, then thought better of it, then thought what the heck!).  Gotta go with New England in this game.  May get a surprise but I think Brady and company including Coach Belichick will just be too much in New England.  If I am wrong, and both San Francisco and Baltimore win, we will have an all Harbaugh brothers Super Bowl.

Looking forward to tomorrow’s  action!

Federer in control down under

Tomic may have saw fit to run his mouth a bit too much this week leading up to his match with the great Roger Federer.  Mr. Federer decided to just let his tennis speak for itself, dispatching of the young Aussie, 6 – 4, 7- 6, 6-1.  It was a very entertaining match with a lot of tremendous shot making by both, but ultimately more from Federer.  Fed is into the round of sixteen and not looking back.  Next up is another young gun, Raonic from Canada.  (Personally, I really like Raonic better than Tomic, much more classy and respectful of greatness).

Murray advanced in three sets, and Serena continues to show no ill effects from the ankle she rolled in her first match, winning 6 – 1, 6- 3 (coming back in the second set from being down 0 – 3).

Young American up and comer Sloane Stephens defeated Laura Robinson of GRB, Wozniacki advanced in two sets and Radwanska continues to quietly advance in the tournament as well.

One big upset, Del Potro was ousted in five sets by France’s Chardy.

My favorite part of watching the replay of Fed’s match was in the third set and Fed was up 4 – 1 0r 5 -1 as a helicopter began circling overhead, and the commentators surmised that Mr. Federer was ready to go back to his hotel, and it had been summoned!  (Perhaps Mirka sent a text letting them know Rog was about to wrap things up?)  Love it, kind of like Kobe taking a helicopter into the Staples Center. (It is cool, face it!)

Also of note, Fed set another record last night, becoming the first man to win 250 major matches.  He makes history just about every time he takes the court!

Round of 16 resumes tonight, Djokovic and Ferrer and others in action.  Interesting women’s match between Radwanska and Ivanovic.

Azarenka survives down under

#1 seed Azarenka found herself down a break in the third set after dropping the second set to American Jamie Hampton (Auburn alum), but fought back to win in three sets, 6 -4, 4- 6, 6-2.  Will be interesting to see if this kind of match serves her well as the tournament progresses.  Her LMFAO buddy was again in the crowd cheering her on.

Serena in action tonight, also Andy Murray.  I am waiting to see Mr. Federer and the young Mr. Tomic…how I hate this time difference! (DVR time)   Hope Federer puts him in his place (after all of his Tomic’s talk about being “unstoppable”).  Really?  GO ROGER!
