Surprise at halftime in New Orleans

Surprise at halftime in New Orleans as 21 Louisville leads 3 Florida 24 – 10 in the Sugar Bowl.  Louisville took an interception back for a TD to shock the Gators at the beginning of the game.  Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater (Big East Player of the Year) has been superb.  Louisville head coach Charlie Strong is a former defensive coordinator at Florida.  The Gators have played what is considered to be the toughest schedule in the nation and have what is widely regarded as the nation’s best defense.  Not fazed, Bridgewater and Louisville are putting on a show.  Stay tuned…second half still to come  and final update tomorrow!

In college basketball, Duke and Davidson were tied 29 – 29 at the half.  Duke went on yet another of their patented runs (16 – 2) at the start of the second half and pulled away to secure a 67 – 50 victory.

Wedesday night TV options?

For those of you who do not want to continue with bowl mania and watch the Sugar Bowl (how can you not?), thought I would give you some TV options for tonight!  The sitcom Whitney is new tonight at 8:00 pm EST and my favorite gal Whitney will be back at 10:30 pm EST on E Channel with a new version of her show Love You, Mean It/Whitney.  Also, at 10:00 pm EST on ABC, the new hit drama Nashville will show a recap of the seasons’ story line so far, ie, catch everyone up before the show returns next week for the winter season.  Hey, I will watch the Sugar Bowl, but I do have a DVR!!!  Isn’t that what they are for?

P.S.  For basketball fans, 1 Duke is in action vs. Davidson on ESPN2.

Pop Culture “rumor”

OK, I normally do not engage in this kind of “stuff”, but this about Brad, ie. Brad Pitt.  Access Hollywood reported today that Brad and Angie finally tied the know (got married) over Christmas in Turks and Caicos.  Do not know if it is true, but if  it is, Congrats!  I have been to Turks and Caicos.  It is beautiful, peaceful and private, so I can see why they would choose this locale if it is true!  Remember, maybe they did, maybe they didn’t.

It is Wednesday, so before we have a little “Sugar”

It is Wednesday, so before we all enjoy a little “Sugar”, as in the Sugar Bowl from New Orleans, let me do what I do every Wednesday, plug my book, Surviving “Paradise”.  Happy New Year everyone and check out my book at Amazon.com, available in paperback for $9.99 and kindle edition for $3.03.

Here’s hoping to success for all of us in 2013, and I want to see everyone buy my book, read it, and give me your feedback.  Moreover, I want to see this story on TV or in theaters!  Thanks everybody!

End of an era in Baltimore

Ray Lewis, LB for the Baltimore Ravens has announced this season will be his last.  It marks the end of an era in Baltimore.  Lewis is a twelve time Pro Bowler (only Tony Gonzalez of the Atlanta Falcons surpasses him with thirteen selections).  Lewis and the Ravens will face Indy and Andrew Luck in an AFC wild card game this Sunday.

In other NFL news, the coaching rumors continue to swirl.  Andy Reid after being fired by the Philadelphia Eagles will reportedly interview with the Kansas City Chiefs and then the Arizona Cardinals.  He appears to be headed to Arizona.  Bill O’Brien, head coach at Penn State is interested in the NFL offers headed his way.  Nick Saban, Alabama, supposedly has said thanks, but no thanks.  Chip Kelly, Oregon, well, it’s a bit of a wait and see.  He is in Arizona preparing for the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday evening.  Reports say he will meet with officials from the Cleveland Browns later this week in Arizona.

Stay tuned…this coaching drama is just getting started!

Slowtime instead of Showtime

The LA Lakers lost last night to the 76ers at home, 103 – 99 and they looked flat out old and slow.  Thus, slowtime instead of showtime. Kobe Bryant, after scoring 36 points in the loss, called out his teammates, referring to them as old as (you know what) and slow.  What will solve this?  I do not know and I don’t think they have the answers at this point. But you know Kobe is very frustrated!

The Clippers seventeen game win streak came to a halt last evening at the hands of the Denver Nuggets, falling 92 – 78.

Amare returned for the Knicks last night to a rousing standing ovation.  Melo scored 45 points but it was not enough as the Knicks fell to the Trailblazers 105 – 100.

FSU rolls in the Orange Bowl

12 FSU rolled over 15 N. Illinois 31 – 10 in the Orange Bowl last night.  The game was a bit closer through the 3rd quarter with FSU leading 17 – 10 but with too much speed and depth for N. Illinois, the Noles blew it open in the final quarter.  Many had questioned the selection of N. Illinois even though their ranking justified the selection.  They hung for three quarters but in the end, FSU showed why choosing a non automatic qualifier was perhaps not the right choice.  Perhaps Big East Co-Champion, 21 Louisville would have been a better opponent for the Noles.  Instead, they will face off against the other team from Florida, the third ranked Gators in the Sugar Bowl tonight, 8:00 pm EST on ESPN.  For the record, I am predicting a victory for the Gators!

Thursday night is the game I am really looking forward to, The Fiesta Bowl which will match 4 Oregon against 5 Kansas State.  This game, in addition to the BCS National Championship game on Monday, 1/7/13 is to me, the most anticipated bowl match up.  It is the only other bowl game to feature two top five teams!

Stanford prevails in the Rose Bowl

Stanford wins the Rose Bowl over Wisconsin in a hard fought, close game, 20 – 14.  It marks the first time Sanford has won the Rose Bowl since 1972.  Congratulations to Coach David Shaw and Stanford.  They are still trying to make believers of the media and the national polls that they are in fact an elite program.  They play power offense and great defense.  I am a believer!  Interestingly, Wisconsin was coached by their AD Barry Alvarez who was 3 – 0 in bowl games as a coach prior to this meeting.  Wisconsin has at least seven coaches from their staff headed elsewhere at the end of this season.  Very close game and an interception by the defensive player of the game Usua Amanam sealed the deal for the Cardinals in the 4th quarter.  (No first downs in the 3rd quarter, that is how hard fought a defensive struggle this game was).

Isn’t it a beautiful setting in Pasadena for the Rose Bowl?

Now we await the outcome of the Orange Bowl between 12 FSU and 15 Northern Illinois to wrap up New Year’s Day Bowl games for 2013!

New Year’s Day “other” sports news

Amidst the bowl mania, here is a bit of other sports news:

NFL: Rumors swirl that Andy Reid (fired head coach of the Eagles) is at the top of the list of candidates for the now vacant head coaching position of the Arizona Cardinals (who fired Ken Whisenhunt).  Also, Bill O’Brien, head coach of Penn State University is atop the wish list of the Philadelphia Eagles. Also receiving mention is Chip Kelly of Oregon.  Both of these college football coaches are being considered for several NFL head coaching vacancies.  How interested are they?

Speaking of Penn State;  The state of Pennsylvania is rumored to be preparing to sue the NCAA regarding the sanctions imposed on Penn State University after the Jerry Sandusky scandal.  Penn State is not involved in the lawsuit, but really, when does this ugliness go away?

NBA updates:  The LA Clippers will put their seventeen game win streak on the line tonight against Denver.  The other team in the LA, you know, the Lakers and Kobe Bryant, well, they will host the 76ers tonight.

Finally, a love match!  Washington Capital’s star Alex Ovechkin and 14th ranked tennis star Maria Kirilenko have announced their engagement.  Congrats!
