NFL Firing Squad

The regular season in the NFL has come to an end, and let the firings begin.  Great way to start the New Year, uh???

So far reports indicate that the following firings have taken place:

Lovie Smith fired by Chicago Bears after 9 seasons; Philadelphia Eagles fire Andy Reid; San Diego fires Norv Turner; (neither of these two a big surprise)  NY Jets fire GM but keep Rex Ryan; Buffalo Bills fire Chan Gailey (form GT coach); Cleveland Browns fire both coach Shumur and GM; Kansas City and Tennessee have reportedly fired their head coaches (?), unconfirmed; and in a bit of a surprise, Arizona fires head coach Ken Whisenhunt and their GM.  Whisenhunt was a star tight end at GT.

Wow, and it has only been one day since the regular season came to a conclusion.  Also, Bill O’Brien of Penn State is said to be on the short list of desired hires for a number of NFL teams, in addition to Chip Kelly of Oregon.

Stay tuned…

Update: Kansas City head coach fired, Tennessee head coach to return??

Redskins into the playoffs!

SNF final Washington 28 – Dallas 18.  The Redskins win the division and secure a spot in the playoffs.  This game was a tale of two rookies, RG III and Albert Morris.  RG III, playing on a hurt leg, lead him team as he has done all year and Albert Morris rushed for 200 yards and the Cowboys could not stop them.  Still, the game was close when…wait for it…yes, Tony Romo threw a critical interception with three minutes left in the 4th quarter which I am sure will haunt him over the off season.  The Redskins went on to score a touchdown and seal the victory.

Happy New Year’s Eve Day.  Have fun, and be safe!

Now, back to bowl mania!

NFL playoff picture almost in place

With the completion of today’s action, the NFL post season picture is almost in place.  All that remains is the outcome of tonight’s game between Dallas and Washington, a pretty important one!

As of now:  NFC 1) Atlanta Falcons 2) San Francisco 3) Green Bay and 4) Washington (??)  Wild Card teams: Seattle and Minnesota   (Stay tuned til tomorrow for tonight’s result)

AFC: 1) Denver 2) New England 3) Houston and 4) Baltimore  Wild Card teams: Indy and Cincinnati

Rumors already starting:  Coach Andy Reid and Philadelphia Eagles to part ways?

Adrian Petersen falls nine yards short but Vikings still make playoffs

Adrian Petersen needed 208 rushing yards to break the single season rushing record, he had 199 yards, a mere 9 yards short.  He did however, help lead Minnesota into the playoffs with a 37 – 34 victory over Green Bay, courtesy of a Blair Walsh field goal as time ran out.  Congrats to AP and the Vikings.  They will play Green Bay again next week in the wild card game.

Peyton Manning did in fact play today, and play he did, with 304 passing yards and 3 TD passes.  The Broncos beat Kansas City 38 – 3 and head to the post season as the number 1 seed in the AFC!  Way to go Peyton!!

In other action, New England blanked Miami, 29 – 0.  San Francisco defeated Arizona, 27 – 13 and clinched the division title.  Seattle beat St. Louis, 20 – 13 and is the only unbeaten team at home in the NFL (as the Falcons lost to the Bucs today).  Seattle will make the playoffs as a wild card team.

In a game that doesn’t matter as far as the post season, San Diego defeated Oakland 24 – 21.

Eli and the NY Giants will be staying home

The reigning Super Bowl Champion New York Giants and their QB Eli Manning (the one with the great hair) will be watching post season play at home.  The Giants were all over Philadelphia and Michael Vick today with a 42 – 7 victory.  Eli had 208 yards passing and 5 passing TD’s.  However, too little, too late.  With the Bears win over Detroit, 26 – 24, the Giants were eliminated.  Speaking of Detroit, Megatron had 72  receiving yards and thus fell short of the 2000 yard reception yard mark.  Still, he did break the record held by Jerry Rice last week against the Falcons.  The Lions have work to do in the off season, but Megatron (Calvin Johnson) is not the problem!

Elsewhere, disappointing day in the ATL.  The Falcons fell to Tampa Bay, 22 – 17.  Matt Ryan and cast played the whole game and looked better in the second half but still came up short.  Falcons have already clinched the Division title, # 1 seed in the NFC and home field advantage.  Still, hate to lose to the Bucs!  Yuk!  Also of note, John Abraham suffered an ankle injury and Dante Robinson went out with an injury as well.  Falcons need them both when playoffs begin.

Cincinnati defeated Baltimore, 23 – 14 and will head to the playoffs.  Indy welcomed back head coach Chuck Pagano (after a successful battle with leukemia) and gave him a 28 – 17 victory.  They will head to the post season with him on the sideline!  Meanwhile, Houston could lose home field advantage, depending on outcome of some other games.

In games that really do not matter, Pittsburgh defeated Cleveland 24 – 10 and Carolina outlasted New Orleans, 44 – 38.

Important games late this afternoon, Green Bay trails Minnesota, 10 – 0.  Adrian Petersen has already scored one TD but needs to rush for 208 yards today to break Eric Dickerson’s single season rushing record.  Pretty tall order.  Minnesota wins and they are in the playoffs.  Green Bay wins, and they clinch #2 seed in NFC.

Peyton Manning and the Broncos are up 7 – 3 on Kansas City and yes, Peyton is playing.  He has over 113 yard passing in the first half.   New England leads Miami 7 – 0.  Also in action San Francisco vs. Arizona and Seattle and St. Louis.  San Francisco must win to clinch the division title.  If Seattle wins, and the 49ers lose, Seattle wins division.

Important game tonight in nation’s capital as Dallas visits RG III and the Redskins.  Washington win will give them the division title.  They can lose and still get a wild card berth.  Dallas must win or they will stay home.

Lot’s to still play for today in the NFL!

Quick question to ponder?  Who should be comeback player of the year in NFL, Peyton Manning or Adrian Petersen?  Cannot go wrong with either!  I am going to pick Peyton!

Michigan State rallies to win Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl

The final bowl game from Saturday turned out to be an exciting one.  Not a lot of offense but still a great finish.  After trailing most the game, Michigan State rallied, turning to RB Levon Bell who rushed for 145 yards and scored a 4th quarter TD to bring them back in the second half.  With just over one minute left in the game, Michigan State made a game winning field goal to defeat TCU, 17 – 16.  Big let down for TCU who had controlled the game through out the first half and kept Michigan State’s offense stymied.  Congrats to Michigan State.

Now, it is Sunday so we turn to the NFL.  Monday, bowl mania returns!

Georgia Tech basketball team wins another one at home!

Georgia Tech is now 9 – 2 and 7 – 0 at home after defeating Fordham today, 73 – 48.  Daniel Miller had 14 points and 9 rebounds for GT.  This should give the Jackets some confidence as they head into ACC play in January 2013.  Go Jackets!

Texas takes the Alamo

Texas trailed Oregon State for three plus quarters at the Alamo Bowl but came storming back led by QB David Ash who threw two fourth quarter touchdowns and some standout defensive play,  especially by player of the game, Alex Okafor, who had 4.5 sacks.  Both teams finish the season with 9 wins.  A great win for Texas and a disappointing loss for Oregon State.  This was the most exciting and competitive bowl game so far today!

Update from San Francisco

At the end of the third quarter, Arizona State is destroying Navy, 62 – 14 in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.  This city is so beautiful, I vote to just call it a day and go enjoy more of the sites.  No need for Navy to suffer through this, I do not even want to see it!  Arizona State has 551 yards of offense, Navy 227.  Enough is enough!

In the snow at Yankee Stadium, Syracuse has defeated West Virginia, 38 – 14.  WVU QB Geno Smith will now look forward to a career in the NFL for sure.

On to the Alamo Bowl in San Antonio.  Will look to see how Univ. of Texas responds in this game after the drama surrounding two of their players and some serious allegations.  23 Texas vs. 13 Oregon State now underway.
