And the Heisman goes to…

The 2012 Heisman Trophy goes to…Johnny Manziel of Texas A & M!!! A freshman (redshirt freshman to be exact).  After watching the interview portion of this show leading up to the presentation, I am so impressed with all of the three young men invited to attend this event as finalists.  Collin Klein, Manti Te’o and Johnny Manziel.  Collin Klein is such a classy young man, and Manti Te’o is an inspiration.  Johnny Manziel is all of the above, and also the winner of the Heisman Trophy.  It restores your faith in college athletics after listening to the interviews with all three of these candidates.  Only one took home the trophy.  Congrats to Johnny Manziel!  But, all of these young men are WINNERS.  Remember, the theme of the day, WINNERS!

Very close voting results.  Manti Te’o came in second, (the most points ever by a defensive player), Collin Klein came in third, Marquis Lee (USC) came in fourth, and Braxton Miller (QB, Ohio State) came in fifth.

Johnny Manziel, the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner.  First Aggie to win the award in fifty five years!

Duke is still “Duke”!

The Dukies keep on rolling.  Duke defeats Temple 90 – 67.  They are currently ranked no. 2. One thing about Duke, they are always great.  Love them, hate them (why would you hate them?), Duke is great.  Theme of the day, WINNERS!

Heisman Trophy awarded in a little over an hour!

Speaking of Winners…Roger Federer news

From Army – Navy to Roger Federer, one class act to another.  Roger is in San Paulo, Brazil to play in an exhibition tournament.  A bit unusual for Mr. Federer this time of year. He is usually in Dubai, working on his fairly secret fitness regimen.  Apparently he is planning to play in the Rio Olympics in 2016.  He talks about planning his schedule so that he can hopefully maintain his high level of play and continue to compete at the top level.  He feels he will need to win two more Grand Slams and five to eight other tournament titles to to get back to number 1 (he is currently ranked at no.2).  He talks of needing to take care of his body, mind and of course, his family.  Hey, if Roger wants to play forever, I will be happy.  I hope he never stops playing, but that is not going to happen.  Like he once said of Andy Roddick, let’s appreciate him while we have him, because the day will come when we won’t.  With Federer, that is not likely to be anytime soon!  GO ROGER!!

Army – Navy

WOW!  There are no words.  This game is just special, and that does not really do it justice.  Navy wins, 17 – 13.  They win the Commander-in-Chief Trophy for the fifth year in a row.  But at the end of the day, there are no winners or losers in this game.  They are all WINNERS!! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

The game had more turnovers than one could keep up with, I think at least ten, seven by Army, one at the end that may have sealed the game for Navy.  When Army fumbled in the red zone with less than two minutes to go, it was over.  To see Army player, Trent Stillman sobbing, head in hands, was just too painful to watch.  Words cannot really describe this kind of emotion.  Again, they are all winners!  Playing football is the easiest thing these guys do on a day to day basis.  Congrats to Navy on the win.  Congrats to Army.  No one is a loser in this game.  Love you both!!!  You are all WINNERS!!!

Breaking College Football Coaching Carousel news…

A little bit of a shocker!  Tommy Tuberville is leaving Texas Tech to take the head coaching position at Cincinnati, left vacant when Butch Jones left for the University of Tennessee.  Texas Tech officials were apparently blindsided!  I have to admit, I am a bit surprised as well!

There was something very different about this Saturday am…

Wow, cannot believe it!  No College GameDay!  No jam packed slate of exciting college football games (not counting Army vs. Navy which will discuss later).  This is a little sad.  The “regular season” portion of college football has basically come to an end.  Now we await the many bowl games we can enjoy throughout the holidays.  Still, it seems like a vacuum!!  Hard to fathom that it will be six weeks before we actually see Alabama and Notre Dame play for the BCS Championship.  NFL is still in full swing, NBA is going strong, and College Basketball is getting revved up.  Still, something is missing today!!

Speaking of Army vs. Navy, 2:30 pm EST today, this is one of the greatest rivalries in all of sport.  It is also so much more than sport.  These young men have places to go and things to do when this game is over.  It is on a different level all together.  Still, for this afternoon, for these young men, this game is about football and winning.  Always a privilege to watch this game!

Tonight, 8:00 pm EST on ESPN, The Heisman Trophy winner will be announced.  I think it will be Johnny Manziel, but it could be Collin Klein, or Manti Te’o.  What do you think?  Stay tuned…

NBA: Lakers vs. OKC on tonight!

Kobe Bryant and the LA Lakers will take on Kevin Durant and the OKC Thunder tonight at 9:30 pm EST on ESPN.  Pretty good game going on right now, Celtics vs. 76er’s in the 4th!  Could the Lakers vs. the Thunder be a preview of the Western Conference Final?  That depends on if the Lakers can get it together and keep it together.  I hope they do. Go Lakers! (I love LA!)

Apologies, no movie review today.  Well, what can I say.  Life happens, and tis the season, ho, ho, ho.  I will get to the theater to view one of the movies currently out in the next few days.  Should it be, Killing Them Softly (Brad Pitt!!), Silver Linings Playbook (highly acclaimed), or the new romcom Playing for Keeps?  Let’s get some feedback, what would you see??  I plan to eventually see them all!

Tomorrow, College Football will be Army vs. Navy!  This is more than rivalry and college football, this is tradition and more.  It is Army vs. Navy!!!

Until tomorrow…

A little Sports/Pop Culture gossip???

I do not do much of this, want to keep it at another level so to speak, but here it is…Yankee great Derek Jeter, recovering from ankle surgery is apparently seeing one of his former gal pals, NO, not the beautiful Minka Kelly from Friday Night Lights, but model, Hannah Davis.  They were spotted being very cozy at Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City.  Derek said they had not seen a lot of each other recently because he had been in Florida, and she did not like Florida!  Interesting…he said he was working on her.

Well, I get the not liking Florida thing, nice place to visit but…see my book Surviving “Paradise”.  I am now convinced the west coast is the “bomb”, anywhere between San Diego and Los Angeles along the shore…ah…dreaming for now!

Hope things work out for Mr. Jeter and his lovely lady!

The Vols finally name a new coach…

The University of Tennessee has finally found a replacement for Derek Dooley.  The school announced the hiring of Butch Jones (not to be confused with Butch Davis formerly of North Carolina)!  Butch Jones has been at Cincinnati for the past three years and prior to that, spent three years at Central Michigan.

So, it now falls upon his shoulders to bring the Vols back to prominence, both in the SEC and nationally.
