CBB – Big Monday

If we have learned anything in college basketball this year, it is to expect the unexpected.  Road wins are a bonus!  Tonight 6 Kansas on the road at Iowa State ended regulation at 90 – 90.  When all was said and done, Kansas prevailed in OT 108 – 96.  Kansas head coach Bill Self claimed his 500th career victory and Iowa State’s home winning streak came to an end.  Johnson scored 39 points for the Jayhawks.

Meanwhile, 12 Syracuse fell on the road to 24 Marquette 74 – 71.  Anybody think the journey to the tourney is going to be predictable?  NOT!  Maybe count on Indiana, or Duke, but then again, nothing is for certain!

Tom Brady signs extension with Patriots

Mr. Perfect, Tom Brady has reportedly signed a contract extension with the New England Patriots worth $27 million for three years.  He reportedly received a $3 million signing bonus and will receive $7 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016 and $9 million in 2017.  Hey, at least he is loyal.  Tom Brady looks to be a Patriot for life, or at least for his playing life.  Something to be said for that!

CBB Polls

The college basketball season has been a wild and crazy ride so far.  This past week, Miami suffered their first ACC loss at Wake Forest, Georgetown upset Syracuse, Ohio State “upset” Michigan State, and Kentucky rallied from a 13 point deficit to defeat Missouri.  The new AP and USA Coaches Polls are out!  Here they are:

AP Poll: 1 Indiana, 2 Gonzaga, 3 Duke, 4 Michigan, 5 Miami, 6 Kansas (big jump for the Jayhawks), 7 Georgetown, 8 Florida, 9 Michigan State, and 10 Louisville.

USA Coaches Poll: 1 Indiana, 2 Gonzaga, 3 Duke, 4 Michigan, 5 Kansas, 6 Florida, 7 Miami, 8 Georgetown, 9 Louisville, and 10 Michigan State.

Big mover, Kansas, with Miami taking a big drop from last week’s lofty #2 ranking.  ESPN analyst and former head coach at Virginia Tech, Seth Greenberg gave his 20 day too early prediction for the four # 1 seeds today: 1 Indiana, 2 Duke, 3 Gonzaga and 4 Florida.

I would have to say watch out for Michigan and Michigan State.  Stay tuned…this year the journey to the tourney has been full of upsets and road losses!

2 Federer advances in Dubai

2 Roger Federer returned to action in Dubai and after a shaky start, advanced over Tunisian wild card player Malek Jaziri, 5 – 7, 6 – 0, 6 – 2.  Fed did not look to be at the top of his game in the first set but came on strong in the second set.  In the third set, he broke in the fifth game and then again in the seventh to take his opening round match in three.  Only serving at 55% on first serves is not what Roger is going to need to beat the likes of Djokovic in this tournament, as well as all of the big four which will be in action in the upcoming Paribas Open in Indian Wells, CA.  Still, he won and moves on…I look for Roger to pick up his game and get himself ready to really compete in this tournament and at Indian Wells. 1 Djokovic will be in action tomorrow.

And the Oscar goes to…

The Academy Awards came to us live last night in all their glory.  Have to say, a very tame Seth MacFarlane hosted, not too many zingers like I was expecting.  As far as the winners, no huge surprises there.  Best Picture – Argo (well deserved) and Ben Affleck was visibly moved when accepting.  Best Actress – Jennifer Lawrence for Silver Linings Playbook –  she looked beautiful and nervous and when she tripped up the stairs, it just made her all the more real.  Best Actor – Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln, he was brilliant in his acceptance.  Face it, if he is nominated, he is going to win; he is in a class by himself.  With last night’s award, he became the only lead actor to win an Oscar three times.  Congrats to him!!  Best Supporting Actress went to Anne Hathaway for Les Miserables (very deserving) and Best Supporting Actor went to Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained, again, well deserved recognition.  Best Director (the category where the Academy did not get it right when they failed to nominate Ben Affleck) went to Ang Lee for Life of Pi.  Take nothing away from Ang Lee,he is a brilliant director, this was his second Oscar win (he previously won for Brokeback Mountain)Life of Pi was one of the night’s big winners with several awards.  Best Adapted Screenplay went to Argo and Best Original Screenplay went to Quentin Tarantino for Django Unchained.  Adele took home the Oscar for her original song for Skyfall.

Now let’s talk fashion:  My favorites were Jennifer Lawrence, Amy Adams, and Jessica Chastain.  All just gorgeous.  Coming in a close second would be Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman.  Best looking couple goes to Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner.

We don’t do worst dressed here, turn into the entertainment shows for that dubious honor.  All in all, a nice show, but very long as always!  Here’s to hoping we have as many good movies and performances to choose from next year as we did this year.  Really an outstanding year!

Final round of golf from the desert

The final round of golf in the WGC Accenture Match Play wrapped up today in the desert, just outside of Tuscon, AZ.  It was a very cool, windy day in the desert.  Hunter Mahan (defending champion) fell to Matt Kuchar (both wearing ski caps) and Jason Day defeated Ian Poulter in the consolation match.  Kuchar was firmly in the lead as they turned towards the back nine, but things got a bit dicey after that.  He was 4 up, then 3 up, then 2 up as Mahan closed.  Kuchar closed it out at 1 up to take the victory.  Way to go Kuchar (former GT golf star!).  Day finished 2 up over Poulter.

Now folks, the sun it out in LA, the stars are arriving so it is time to settle in and watch the Oscars…back tomorrow with news form the biggest and final award show!!  Cannot wait to see what host Seth MacFarlane has in store for us…

Roger Federer news

World number 2 Roger Federer (#1 in my heart) returns to action next week at the Dubai Open.  Roger has a residence in Dubai (it is great to be Roger, also great to be Mirka!) and he and world #1 Djokovic are the top seeds at next week’s event.  Coverage begins this Monday on Tennis Channel.  He will next compete at the Paribas Open in Indian Wells, CA.  Fed has announced that after that tournament he will be taking two months off before the clay court swing begins.  He will be shifting into “husband” and “daddy” mode as he plans a family vacation and then will return to Switzerland (another home) to practice on clay courts and ready himself for his return to competition in May at the Madrid Open.  This will be followed of course by the French Open.

Federer will skip the mandatory Masters 1000 event in Miami after Indian Wells, which is allowed due to the fact that he 31 years old, he has played more than 600 matches and has been on the tennis tour for 12 years.  Hey, I would choose southern California over Miami, FL any day of the week.  Pretty cool that he has his priorities straight at this time in his career.  He talks openly about wanting to continue to compete for a number of years if possible but at the same time hoping he will know when the time is right for him to walk away.  He also does not rule out the possibility of regaining the #1 world ranking.  Prior to this bit of news, Roger has been spending time in South Africa in support of his foundation.

Looking forward to watching Roger compete in Dubai and then in Indian Wells, CA!!

Jimmie Johnson wins Daytona 500

Jimmie Johnson wins the Daytona 500 with Dale Earnhardt, Jr. finishing second.  It was Juniors third second place finish in the last four Daytona 500 races.  Mark Martin finished third and Brad Keweloski finished fourth.  Danica Patrick, the pole sitter finished in 8th place, the highest finish for a woman in history.  Good for her and congrats to Jimmie Johnson.

I have to be honest, I am not a NASCAR fan; I love Indy Car racing.  As my Indy insider likes to say, “did you watch the taxi cabs”?  Anyhow, it is a huge race and I was of course interested to see how Danica, formerly a Indy driver, would fare.  She did well and seems to be improving in her fourth year racing the “taxi cabs” instead of the open wheel cars of the Indy series.

All you NASCAR fans out there don’t be haters…it was a great race!  Many Jimmie Johnson fans are happy today.
