Another win for Ben!

Yet another Best Director award for Ben Affleck, making the Oscar snub look more and more foolish as he continues to rack up these accolades.  Last night, Affleck took home the Directors Guild of America award for Best Director, Argo.  Usually, this award is the best measuring stick for who will win the Academy Award for Best Director.  Only problem of course, Affleck did not get an Oscar nomination.  Hopefully, Argo will take home the Oscar for Best Picture (it is nominated!!).  Congrats again to Ben Affleck, well deserved and well done!

#1 Michigan falls to #3 Indiana

Big college basketball game last night and once again, #1 has fallen.  We have already had at least five different #1’s in college basketball this year and we will have another one on Monday, although this time it might be a former number one becoming so again.  Oh, wait, that has  already happened once with Duke.  OK, back to the game on ESPN last night, 1 Michigan goes down to 3 Indiana in Assembly Hall, 81 – 73.  Indiana led for almost the entire game, yet Michigan hung around, always ready to pounce and take the lead if the opportunity arose.  It never quite did.  With 2 Kansas falling at home to Oklahoma State, 85 – 80, and 6 Syracuse and 10 Oregon both losing (all three of these teams lost to unranked opponents), it stands to reason Indiana will likely be back at #1 in Monday’s college basketball polls.  Do not expect anyone to stay there for too long, Big Ten is very competitive, Duke is still great, watch out for Miami (only undefeated in ACC) and it is just so doggone hard to win on the road!

P.S. I think I may have spotted John Mellencamp in the house at Assembly Hall, did not have a Meg Ryan sighting, but she could have been there as well.  Not absolutely sure, but I thought I did get a glimpse of John in his normal corner seat.

Time for that Super Bowl pick!

The day is here, time to make that pick!  I have indicated in earlier posts this week that I was leaning toward the San Francisco 49ers.  They are my pick.  This game is really a toss up, 49ers are just over a field goal favorite.  I think the 49ers are the better team, not by much, but just a little more solid, complete team.  If it were a personality contest between the Harbaugh brothers, I would pick John (Ravens).  Like and respect Jim (49ers), but he is a bit too intense for me.  But it is not a personality contest, it is the Super Bowl, a football game, the one billions of the people will be watching today.  So, taking a deep breath because I think it could really go either way, I will stick with my pick, San Francisco 49ers will be celebrating a victory tonight in New Orleans around 10:30 pm EST!

Big day for Mickelson in the desert

Phil Mickelson has surged to the lead in the Waste Management Phoenix Open with a round of 64 and sits atop the leaderboard at – 24.  He is trailed by Snedeker at 18 (65), Harrington at -16 (63) and Moore at – 16 (65).  Mickelson has shot three rounds of outstanding golf, 60, 65, and 64.  He now has the opportunity to either tie the PGA record for four rounds of golf at 189 or break the record tomorrow in the final round.  He has already tied the tournament record for 54 holes of golf.  Lefty is very comfortable playing in the desert, having played his collegiate golf at Arizona State University.  They love him out there, and he is delivering some of the best golf he has played in quite awhile.  Tomorrow the action concludes with coverage beginning at 3:00 EST.

When will we see Mr. Federer in action again?

Mr. Federer, the Swiss maestro, will next be in action in Rotterdam, the Netherlands February 11th.  Roger will not be playing Davis Cup for Switzerland in the near future according to Severin Luethi, Swiss Davis Cup Captain and long time member of Team Federer.  Roger is not finished playing Davis Cup, expect to see him perhaps after the US Open providing the Swiss team continues to advance.  For now, Roger is managing his schedule, prioritizing by placing an emphasis on rest, training and family time.  Cannot blame him.  He is 31 and will turn 32 this year in late summer.  Roger is doing what is best for Roger at this stage in his career.  He also wants to maximize his time to train, compete and attempt to win another major.  Look for Roger and the other members of the big four to meet up at Indian Wells, CA in early March.  That is of course allowing for Rafael Nadal achieving a successful return to competitive tennis.
