Way to go Falcons, Congrats to Megatron!

The Atlanta Falcons defeated Detroit 31 – 18 and secured home field advantage for the playoffs as the number one (1) seed in the NFC.  The Falcons looked great in the first half, bad in the third quarter, and then rallied and were great in the 4th.  Matt Ryan ended up with four passing touchdowns.  On the other side, history was made!  Calvin Johnson had 225 receiving yards and surpassed the record for single season reception yards previously held by Jerry Rice.  After the catch that broke the record, he ran across the field to the Detroit sideline, gave his Dad a hug and the ball, and headed back out to the field.  What a classy young man and huge talent he is (former GT great)!  With one game left, is 2000 plus receiving yard possible for Megatron this year?

Half time in Detroit, will records be made?

MNF on Saturday in Detroit and it is halftime with the Falcons leading the Lions, 21 – 6.  Matt Ryan passed for 22 consecutive completions (ten last week against the Giants, first twelve tonight) and has three touchdowns, two to Roddy White, one to Julio Jones.  Matt went 12/12 before having an incompletion.  Calvin Johnson has 117 reception yards, and he needs a mere 65 more to break the single season record for reception yards held by Jerry Rice.  He also set a record with eight consecutive games with 100 plus receiving yards.

Will the record fall tonight?  It is possible but the Falcons appear on their way to win number 13 and taking the NFC number one seed in the playoffs. (They can also accomplish this with a win next weekend).

Oh, did I speak too soon.  Falcons lead 21 – 13 at end of 3rd with Detroit in the redzone.  Megatron needs four (4)! more yards to break record!!  Will it happen?  YES!  Calvin Johnson breaks record!  Congrats to Megatron!  Falcons lead 31 – 16 with just over two minutes left in the 4th quarter.

Stay tuned…back later or tomorrow with final and more sports news!

Late interception seals the win for Boise State

Saturday Bowl game wrap up:  In the R & L Carrier Bowl game from New Orleans, L A-Lafayette takes care of East Carolina, 43 – 34.  LA-Lafayette gave LSU a scare earlier this year.

Very exciting game on a beautiful day in Las Vegas.  Boise State wins the Las Vegas Bowl for the third straight year over a Pac-12 opponent in a thriller, 28 – 26 over Washington.  Who says some of the good bowl games don’t come early?  We even had Brent and Herbie calling the game!  The game see sawed back and forth and a late interception of QB Keith Price of Washington, marring what had otherwise been an outstanding performance, sealed the deal for Boise State.  Chris Petersen continues to do a tremendous job at Boise State as they finish the year with eleven (11) wins.  Turnovers also played a role in this game, as Washington had three (3) with Boise State only having one (1).

Will Christmas come early for LA?

A bit of surprising news out of LA.  Steve Nash may play tonight against the Warriors after missing the past twenty four games.  Could Christmas be coming early for the Lakers?  He had been quoted as saying he thought a return to action against the Knicks on Christmas Day was realistic.  Well, let’s wait and see, and more importantly, see if it makes a difference in how the Lakers handle their offensive performance.

In College hoops, mild upset: 9 Kansas upends 7 Ohio State, 74 – 66.  In a true upset, 3 Syracuse falls to Temple, 83 – 79 in Madison Square Garden.  And in Atlanta at McCamish Pavilion, Georgia Tech continues to win at home, defeating the Citadel, 73 – 41.

College Football news: University of Tennessee QB Tyler Bray expected to declare for the NFL draft.

Another game, another brawl?

Another NBA game with grown men behaving badly.  In this case, not really a brawl like the “rumble in Boston”, but again behavior unbecoming of professional athletes.  Four ejections occurred in last night’s game between the Knicks and the Bulls.  Three Knicks, Carmelo Anthony, Tyson Chandler and Coach Mike Woodson for the Knicks and Joakim Noah for the Bulls were all ejected in the foul filled loss by the Knicks to the Bulls, 110 – 106.  Technical fouls galore, an altercation between Noah and Chandler, my oh my…again I must ask…What would Kobe do?

Well, Kobe will be on late this evening so we will see what Kobe does tonight.  There has been some talk of Kobe taking too many shots.  Well, I think we can all agree he is in pursuit of becoming the all time scoring leader, but in the current situation, I think he lacks confidence in his teammates.  Gasol has struggled, and is not being utilized properly, and they lack a point guard to run the show.  With Steve Nash set to return on Christmas Day, I think we will see Kobe start to distribute the ball more and look for scoring help from others.  Wait and see…some may call Kobe selfish but he works as hard if not harder than anyone in the NBA and he wants to win, and he wants another ring!

Total Recall (on demand)

Watched the remake of the movie Total Recall, the original was of course made famous by Arnold…(you all know who I am talking about).  This version was directed by Len Wiseman (real life husband of one of the stars, Kate Beckinsale).  It is futuristic, and in all  honesty, that is not my favorite genre.  I think that the good guys won when all the explosions and fighting was done.  I will say one thing, the top stars were all very easy on the eyes.  Colin Farrell looked mighty fine and both Kate Beckinsale and Jessica Biel are absolutely gorgeous women.  Think the guys would enjoy this movie more perhaps.  Would probably not choose it at the theater, but watching it on demand was not a bad bit of entertainment!

Couple of interesting observations; there was a sequence where conversation takes place regarding looking to one’s heart to know who you really are, not the mind or dwelling in the past but staying in the present, always look to the heart.  I liked that.  Also, this movie was based on a short story.  I have noticed that some very good movies often come out of material from short stories.  Another example would be a movie I thoroughly enjoyed, The Adjustment Bureau with Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.  It was also based on a short story.

Just thought I would share…that it all for now.  Until tomorrow…

Some College Football buzz…

We are 17 days away and counting until the BCS Championship Game in Miami between Alabama and Notre Dame.  One hot topic is who from Bama will stay and who will head to the NFL?  RB Eddie Lacy is a name that has been bantered about quite often lately as likely to declare for the draft.  He has said he will not decide until after the title game.  With TJ Yeldon waiting in the wings, and a number of his offensive lineman on their way out, sounds like it would be the time for him to go pro, especially after seeing what has happened to the likes of Marcus Lattimore the past two seasons.  Running backs do not tend to have a tremendous amount of longevity when it comes to playing time anymore.  Guess we will have to wait and see what he decides after January 7, 2013.  I am sure Nick Saban has him focused on one thing, THE GAME!!

A little bit of a shakeup in the coaching staff at UGA with defensive line coach and recruiting guru Rodney Garner heading to Auburn.  He will assume the title of Assistant Head Coach and recruiting coordinator there.  I think UGA defense will be fine, but they will miss him sorely when it comes to his recruiting talents and rapport with the players.

Jadeveon Clowney of South Carolina seems like the next defensive candidate for next year’s Heisman race.  He is a beast, certainly one of  the best defensive players in the country this past year.  Look for him to be a force next year.

And…speaking of the Heisman, current Heisman winner, Johnny “Football” Manziel was spotted courtside at the recent Heat – Mavericks basketball game.  Oh, the chatter…how did he get those tickets???  He said it was a late birthday present he gave himself.  Who knows, maybe it was an early Christmas present as well.  He got to enjoy “the king” Lebron James put on a show up close and personal.  Speaking of LeBron, he has received yet another honor, just being named Sporting News Athlete of the Year.  Congrats to LeBron on yet another “trophy”.

Last MNF game on Saturday in Detroit! (vs. Atlanta)

The last Monday Night Football game of this season will be…Saturday in Detroit.  The Falcons (12 – 2 ) will face the Detroit Lions and attempt to win and secure the number one seed in the NFC and home field advantage for the playoffs.  MegaTron, Calvin Johnson of Detroit will be playing against the team from his hometown (former Georgia Tech great) as he continues on his quest to break Jerry Rice’s record for reception yards in a single season.  Hope the Falcons win, and also hope Calvin breaks the record.  He needs 182 yards and has this game and then the final regular season game to get it done.  Probably won’t happen on Saturday vs. Atlanta, but I think he will accomplish the milestone.  GO FALCONS! GO MEGATRON!

RG III of the Washington Redskins appears to be healed and is expected to start this Sunday against the Eagles (who will not be starting Michael Vick).  Interesting race going on in the NFC East, with the Redskins, Giants, and Cowboys all at 8 – 6.  Which of these teams will make the playoffs?  This Sunday the Redskins face the Eagles, the Cowboys will deal with Drew Brees and the Saints, and in the late afternoon, Eli and the Giants will face the Baltimore Ravens.  Going to go right down to the final game of the season next weekend most likely.

Now I know its is early, and I am getting way ahead of myself here, but I just want to throw this out there.  What about  Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos vs. Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons for the Superbowl match up?  Sounds kind of wonderful to me.
