Banned for life…

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has handed down his penalty for Donald Sterling, owner of the LA Clippers after his horrific racist comments!  He is banned for life and will be fined 2.5 million dollars, all of the money to be donated to groups that support anti-discrimination.  This is the largest fine in NBA history.  I bet David Stern is glad he has retired!  This is a serious offense, and a very severe and serious punishment in response!  The whole story is awful, and shameful.

Moving to Pop Culture…the season finale of The Following aired last night.  Not much lighter fare here, except that is TV, not real life.  Let’s see, Claire and Ryan are not going to ride off into the sunset and live happily ever after?  Ryan does not kill Joe, when given the chance?  Perhaps saving his own soul instead?  Max and Mike kiss…FINALLY!  And those two twisted twins, well someone picks them up, not sure if one of them is dead or alive, and who is driving the SUV that rescues them?  That will all be enticing drama to await us in the next season of this dark but really entertaining show.  Kevin Bacon as Ryan Hardy is fantastic!

Also, Harry (Prince Harry) is reportedly single again.  Not too surprising but I do love Harry!  He is so charming and devilish, in the best of ways!

Looking forward to tennis action next week in Madrid! Federer, Wawrinka, Nadal, and Djokovic all expected to reconvene.  The clay court action resumes on the road to Roland Garros.  Be there or be square!!  P.S.  GO FED!

“This and That” on a Saturday!

Beautiful day on Saturday in the ATL, and I enjoyed a bit of “this and that”!  What about you guys?

Anyhow…some great oldie but goldies on TV…Serendipity, Innerspace, Switch..I could go on but I won’t!

In NBA action…Vince Carter and the Dallas Mavericks for the win!  Impossible three point shot at the buzzer lifts Dallas to a 2-1 lead over the Spurs (what is up with this, I am pulling for San Antonio!)  Ah..the battle for Texas supremacy!  Also today, the Atlanta Hawks and the Pacers are dead even, 2-2 in their series after the Pacers won today.  Too bad for the Hawks but glad to see the Pacers look like, well the Pacers..#1 seed in the East.  Miami and Chicago in action now (Miami has 2-0 lead in the series) and later, OKC and Memphis square off, with Memphis enjoying a surprising 2-1 lead in the series.

In Stuttgart, Germany, Ana Ivanovic will face Maria Sharapova tomorrow in the final of this women’s clay court tournament on the road to Roland Garros.  Sharapova dispatched Sara Errani today, 6-1, 6-2 and Ivanovic advanced over J. Jankovic (I saw her at Indian Wells!), 6-3, 7-5.  I am pulling for Ana, not much of a Sharapova fan!

Men’s tennis news…well Roger Federer is not playing so I am taking a brief break before the Madrid Open gets underway May 5th.  All the top men should be in action at this event.  Great YouTube video of Roger Federer visiting the offices of his sponsor Credit Suisse!  Check it out…or follow my twitter account, Susan W. Shaver @survivingpara!  I tweeted it just moments ago!

Until later…

The Other Woman…the movie

Well I saw a chick flick today…The Other Woman starring Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann.  Had it marked on my calendar…liked it but can’t say I loved it!  Sure, it is funny, Leslie Mann is at her best (Think This Is What 40 Looks Like and others) and Cameron Diaz is the champion of the girlfriend clique (think her and gal pal Drew Barrymore in Charlie’s Angels remake and real life!), but it is also a bit cliche.  There are some great laughs, some very predictable outcomes, and yes, the “husband” is a total douche bag!!  Then, Kate Upton brings her, shall we say “assets” to the the screen, need she bring more?  All in all, fun entertainment, take your girlfriend(s) or go by yourself, kind of doubt your significant other will be really stoked to see this move.  There were some “guys” in the theater, however.

Almost wish I had seen The Grand Budapest Hotel.  Next time…

Moving on to sports news..what is up with the Indiana Pacers?  I was so excited that they beat out Miami for the #1 seed in the East.  They were such a great defensive team throughout the year…and now…I don’t know but it is not pretty!

In tennis action from Barcelona, Rafael Nadal was upset in three sets by fellow Spaniard Almagro, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4.  Rafa has looked very vulnerable in 2014.  And this is on his beloved clay!!  He went out way too early at Indian Wells, Miami and Monte Carlo and now in Barcelona?  He has over 5000 points to defend from this tournament through the French Open and that has got to put pressure on even the best.  Sure does open the door for the likes of Djokovic (if his wrist is healthy), Stan “the man” Wawrinka, and Mr. Federer (if Mirka is not giving birth to their third child) at Roland Garros.  We shall see..

Time to enjoy Unforgettable…what a Friday night, uh?  Later!

Surviving “Paradise” on Wednesday and isn’t she lovely!

It is Wednesday and you know what that means…Surviving “Paradise” day!  Also, it is the day when People Magazine announced the cover of their 25th anniversarySurviving Paradise Most Beautiful issue!  It is…drum roll please…Lupita Nyong’o!!  She is the Academy Award winning actress who starred in 12 Years A Slave ( and a grad of Yale School of drama!).  Nicely done People Magazine.  So funny to realize that this is the “25th anniversary” of this People Magazine tradition.  Last year’s winner, Gwyneth Paltrow was quite the controversial choice…people (no pun intended) either love her or hate her..there seems to be no middle ground.  I don’t anticipate there being that kind of controversy with this year’s choice.  Anyhow, I am a subscriber so I look forward to my issue.

Now, Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver is available at Amazon.com for $8.99 in paperback, $3.03 in kindle edition and $4.99 at Barnes and Noble nook.  Come on people (again, no pun intended!), how can you beat those bargain prices!  It is a funny, entertaining story about a southern woman who relocates to a new town (Sarasota, FL) only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances.  This kind of neighborhood drama and mayhem is unparalleled, and is laugh out loud funny to read about.  Check it out, please!!

Other entertainment news…Drew Barrymore and her husband had their second child and their second daughter yesterday…Frankie Barrymore Kopelman.  Congrats to this happy couple and family!!

Tonight, Nashville (ABC, 10:00 pm EST) returns with a new episode, albeit a very different one…a live concert with all the show’s stars performing in front of a live Nashville audience.  Should be very interesting…

Moving to sports…NBA playoff action last night saw the Pacers (what has been up with them, number one seed in the East over Miami?) evening their series with Atlanta, and Toronto taking a surprising 2-0 lead over the Chicago Bulls (in Chicago).  The Western playoffs continue tonight.  Have to say…n0 Lakers, no Kobe…my interest level is not the same.  Still..congrats to San Antonio Spurs Gregg Popovich for winning Coach of the Year!  Well deserved.  Also, J. Noah of the Bulls is Defensive Player of Year and let’s hear it for Kevin Durant of the OKC Thunder who SHOULD finally unseated “The King, LeBron” as MVP!!  Go Durant and the Thunder…actually I am sort of pulling for the Spurs…would have liked to see them win last year (they could have and should have in game six!)

Finally, The Boston Marathon took place on Monday, one year after the horrific circumstances that resulted in so much pain and loss last year.  An American, Meb Ketlezighi (gee, I hope I got that right) won the marathon for the first time since 1983.  How wonderful!!  Congrats to him and to Boston…the tradition continues and it was beautiful to see this year!

Enjoy your “hump day”!  Until later…

Wawrinka in three sets over Federer in Monte Carlo!

It is all about Stan the man today as he defeated Roger Federer in three sets in Monte Carlo, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 to claim his first ever Masters 1000 event title.  It was a strange dynamic to the match…after all these two are great friends, fellow Swiss players, and practice together all the time.  They even share Severin Luthi, (Swiss Davis Cup captain) although Luthi is on Federer’s payroll.  He has long been part of Fed’s coaching team.  He had to ask Stan if he minded if he sat in Fed’s box today.  Take nothing away from Stan, it is was almost like watching the Williams’ sisters play each other back in the day, two great players that are so close personally, it was almost painful and conflicted.  Now for me, it was not conflicted.  I truly love Wawrinka and am so happy to see him emerge at the age of 29 to the elevated status as one of the very best tennis players in the world.  But, I am always, and I mean always, pulling for Roger Federer.  It seemed today as if Roger struggled with the personal dynamics in this match more than Stan.  The rain delay which occurred in the second set certainly favored Stan, making the conditions slower with a heavier ball.  Roger took the first set, 6-4, then the second set seemed to be a bit passive, almost zombie like.  Still after breaks were exchanged, and then the brief rain delay (it was overcast and cloudy anyway), the second set still ended 6-6.  Wawrinka got the min-break and went onto to cruise to a commanding win of the tie break, thus the second set, 7-6.  The third set saw Federer lose his first service game, and then his second and the match was all but over.  Roger seemed sluggish in the third set while Stan was aggressive and energized.  Great win for Wawrinka, 4-6, 7-6, 6-2 and he certainly cements himself as a solid component in the upper echelons of tennis.  The “big four” may now be Nadal, Djokovic, Wawrinka and Federer with Murray struggling with his game after his back surgery last year.  Still folks, please, I beg your pardon, but do not call Stan the new “Swiss Maestro”.  There is only one, and that is Roger Federer.  Stan has lived and played in Roger’s shadow, but also feels Roger has been a true friend and genuinely encouraging of all that Stan has accomplished, especially overjoyed to see him win his first Grand Slam title in Australia.  Roger wanted to win this title (one of the few Masters 1000 events that has eluded him) but don’t think for a moment he is not happy to see Stan’s success.  That is who Roger Federer is…and don’t think for a moment he will not be back ready to win at the next event…Madrid, Rome and even Roland Garros (depending on the birth of his third child).  Congrats to Stan…he is looking like a good shot for the French Open…Nadal is shaky, Djokovic is dealing with a wrist injury, and it remains to be seen if Roger will be in Paris or in Switzerland with the the due date still looming soon!  But do not ever count Roger Federer out…believe me, he will have a special year!  And perhaps so too, will Stan!

It will be an “all Swiss” final in Monte Carlo!

I am so excited, I just can’t stand it!  It will be an “all Swiss” final!  Federer vs. Wawrinka tomorrow for the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 tennis tournament title!  Roger has never won this title (one of the few he has yet to conquer) and the last (and I believe only) time Wawrinka defeated his good buddy and fellow countryman, Federer, was at this very event in 2009.  Roger had just gotten married and was sort of on his “honeymoon”.  Anyhow, today Wawrinka defeated David Ferrer, 6-1, 7-6 in what was a commanding performance by Stan the Man!  Roger defeated Djokovic, 7-5, 6-2, ending Nole’s string of fifteen straight wins.  Djokovic lives in Monte Carlo (you know, no taxes) and it is a bit of a hometown tournament for him.  He won this event last year and was looking to make it six Masters 1000 titles in a row.  He suffered a right wrist injury, (sometime, no one knows exactly when) and had his forearm wrapped.  It did not seem to be bothering him early on in the match, as both players seemed in prime form.  Roger looked much better than he did yesterday in what was a very sloppy win over Tsonga.  Djokovic had an opportunity at 5-4, with Federer serving at 15-40 and Federer pulled it out to go 5-5.  From that point on, Nole appeared to wilt somewhat and Fed won the first set 7-5.  After that, it was the runaway freight train that is the Roger Federer we all know and love.  So happy to see Roger make it to the final…should be really interesting match tomorrow.  If Roger wins, he will move to #3 in the world.  (Stan is currently #3, Roger #4)  Wawrinka is a much different player these days so that 13-1 record Fed holds in wins over him likely goes out the door.  Should be a very tough, competitive, entertaining match for sure.

Sad to hear that after the match, Djokovic confirmed that he does indeed have an injury that will render him unable to play for awhile.  When asked how long, his response..”I don’t know”.  That is not good news for tennis fans!

Until tomorrow!

Semifinals almost set from Monte Carlo Masters 1000 (surprise!)

The semifinals are almost set for tomorrow’s action at the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 tennis tournament.  Currently, Djokovic is locked in a battle with Garcia-Lopez of Spain and has lost the first set, 4-6, and they are on serve in the second.  This one will have to go three for Nole to prevail…will he succumb and be upset victim number two today?  Stay tuned…

First upset is somewhat of a shocker (although it has happened before) as world number one and eight time winner of this event, Rafael Nadal lost to fellow countryman David Ferrer in straight sets, 6-7, 4-6.  It was long with almost endless rallies between these two clay court specialists and Nadal was just off a bit, Ferrer was on, the energizer bunny type player that he always is.  Great win for Ferrer who will move on to play Stan Wawrinka tomorrow.  Wawrinka took care of M. Raonic in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2.  Stan the man is finally looking like the guy who took out Djokovic down under and went on to defeat Nadal for his first Grand Slam title.

The crazy match of the day involved the great one, Mr. Federer, and J. Tsonga of France.  Fed has had some difficulties with Tsonga in the past and today was no exception.  But as well as Tsonga played, Federer really struggled, especially in the first set and one could see frustration setting in.  He even received a code violation for swatting a ball out into the Mediterranean sea after one of his more frustrating missed shots.  (Highly unusual for Roger) However, he continued to battle and hang around like all great champions do.  Dropping the first set and twice broken, 2-6, the second set went to a tie break.  He had numerous break point opportunities but failed to convert.  (0/15 at the end of set number two)  He had an early opportunity to win the second set tie break and squandered it only to finally prevail (8-6) and send it to a third set.  Sweet sixteen rolled around, and Federer broke Tsonga for the first time and then broke him again and rolled to a decisive 6-1 victory in the third set.  He advances 2-6, 7-6, 6-1 and awaits the winner of Djokovic – Garcia Lopez!  Sloppy win for Federer, 2/19 on break opportunities, 40/45 as far as winners/unforced errors…but a win is a win.  He is into the semifinals (has never won this event) and getting some good clay court tennis action under his belt.  Hoping for a Djokovic – Federer semifinal?  Perhaps a Federer – Wawrinka final, or another epic Wawrinka – Djokovic match (they have played some great ones!)  Well, I of course am hoping for Federer, Federer, and then Federer!!

Update: Djokovic through in three sets over Garcia-Lopez, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.  So…we will get a Federer – Djokovic semifinal tomorrow!!  (Other semi will feature Ferrer vs. Wawrinka)

Tennis results from Monte Carlo on Thursday!

The results are in from tennis action this Thursday in Monte Carlo and the quarterfinals are up next (tomorrow live beginning at 5:30 am EST!)  Djokovic waltzed through his match over P. Carreno Busta, 6-1, 6-0; Nadal (looking better than he did in his previous match) advanced over A. Seppi, 6-1, 6-3; Tsonga over Fognini, 4-7, 6-3, 6-0 (his prize, a quarterfinal matchup with Mr. Federer); David Ferrer over G. Dimitrov, 6-4, 6-2; Raonic over T. Robredo, 6-4, 6-3; Wawrinka over Almagro courtesy of a walkover; and finally one upset…T. Berdych is out falling to Garcia-Lopez in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 1-6.  Now…the match du jour!

Roger Federer vs. Lucas Rosol…you all may remember him…the guy who defeated Rafael Nadal in five sets at Wimbledon in 2012 (and Roger Federer said thank you very much and went on to win the trophy and claim his 17th Grand Slam title).  Well, Rosol has not done a whole lot since, and today was no different as Federer won in two sets, 6-4, 6-1.  So Fed advances into the quarterfinals to face Tsonga.

There has been speculation that Roger took a wildcard entry into this event in anticipation of perhaps missing either the event in Rome, Madrid or even the French Open depending on the due date of his third child with wife, Mirka.  Of course, Roger is going to be there for that important and wonderful event!  No word on when the exact due date is, and we all know, those babies often come when is suits them, sometimes when least expected.  He and Mirka may have the birth planned, that is of course all a part of his treasured private life, but I really hope Roger can do well in this event at Monte Carlo and pick up some points.  He is a three time runner-up to Mr. Nadal and has never won this Masters 1000 event.  Would hate to see him miss Roland Garros, but if it happens, then it happens!

Until tomorrow…

P.S. Duke super freshman Jabari Parker has declared for the NBA draft…no real surprise with that news!

Wednesday..Surviving Paradise and tennis!

It is Wednesday…hump day and well, just another one of those hum drum days perhaps?  All the Gwyneth and Chris Martin gossip and nasty rumors seemed to have subsided, for now, Kate and William and their adorable tyke George are looking happy and charming visiting Australia and New Zealand, and darn, Nashville is a repeat again tonight!  So…what can you do to get your juices flowing…how about checking out my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.  Follow a southern woman who relocates to a new town in southwest Florida only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances!!  It is full of humor, satire, drama, and just downright fun!  It is available at Amazon.com for $8.99 in paperback, $3.03 in kindle edition, and $4.99 at Barnes and Noble nook.  Check it out, you may just find yourself laughing and very entertained!Surviving Paradise

Meanwhile, the Monte Carlo Masters 1000 event got underway yesterday.  Djokovic, Berdych, Ferrer and Tsonga all advanced yesterday.  Today, my guy, Mr. Federer defeated Stepanek, 6-1, 6-2.  Also, Nadal defeated Gabashili, 6-4, 6-1 and Wawrinka (that other Swiss guy) took care of M. Cilic with ease, 6-0, 6-2.  Fognini of Italy was a winner today as well.  The top half of this draw is loaded, Fed, Nadal, Wawrinka so it should make for some interesting matches as the tournaments continues.  Hard to see live matches due to the time difference (hate that), 5:30 am EST on Tennis Channel but matches are shown again on Tennis Channel beginning at 5:30 pm EST.  Have not seen Fed’s match yet but hope to catch it tonight!

Over and out for now!  Enjoy your day!

Bubba Watson gets it done…2nd Masters win in three years!

Way to go Bubba!  Ger her done, get her done!  Bubba Watson wins his second Masters in three years with a score of -8.  He is a lefty, has an unorthodox swing, and drives a Dukes of Hazzard car.  And, he is one of the greatest golfers in the world, a free spirit, and now a two time winner of the Masters.  Not since Arnold Palmer has a player won the right to wear the green jackets twice in his first six starts!  Well done Mr. Watson!  The wonder-kid from Dallas, Texas, Jordan Spieth, playing along side Bubba faltered on the back nine, but came in second at -5 along with Jonas Blixt ( a Swede).  Both Spieth and Blixt were playing in their first Masters.  M. Jimenez finished in fourth at -4 and Matt Kuchar and Rickie Fowler (minus his long flowing locks) finished tied at -2.  Lee Westwood was at -1, the only other player to finish the tournament this year under par.  Last year’s winner, Adam Scott, presenting the green jacket to Bubba finished at +1.  Rory Mcilroy was really not a factor and finished at even par.  What a strange Masters in some respects.  The weather was glorious, the greens were lightening fast, and Mickelson missed the cut and Tiger wasn’t even able to play.  Still,  what a great performance by Bubba Watson.  Two year old son, Caleb was there to greet him along with his wife. and an always emotional Bubba hugged them and carried his son off the course where his two buddies Fowler and Kuchar stood ready to congratulate him!  Great finish and the 2014 Masters is in the books.  By the way, that old guy, Freddie Couples, finished at +2.

Now, we (or at least I) can turn our attention back to tennis.  The Monte Carlo Masters 1000 event gets underway tomorrow.  #1 Rafael Nadal will be going for a record setting ninth title at this event.  #2 Novak Djokovic will be attempting to win his fifth straight Masters 1000 event (since late 2013).  And the great Swiss man, Roger Federer, has taken a wildcard entry into this tournament (he has not played here since 2011) and having quietly climbed back to #4, will look to cement his return to the pinnacle of the sport.  The other guy from Switzerland, currently ranked #3, Stan Wawrinka will also be there, looking to regain his form after faltering a bit after his stunning win down under to claim his first Grand Slam title.  He and Roger and still so excited, they just can’t stand it after the Swiss come from behind victory in Davis Cup action in Geneva.  Roger trails Stan by a mere 525 points in the rankings.   Can he climb to number 3 with this event??  Let’s hope so.  Looking forward to watching this first clay court event with the current “big three” in action, Wawrinka knocking on the door. Andy Murray (considered to be the other member of the notorious “big four”) is not participating.  Murray has fallen to #8 in the world rankings at this time.

Turning to pop culture, Californication fans rejoice!  The final season begins tonight!  9:30 pm EST on Showtime.  Don’t expect a happily ever after for Hank and Karen in tonight’s episode!  But, we shall look forward to watching how they wind this very entertaining show down to it’s conclusion.  Not for the faint of heart, especially when it comes to well you know, people keeping their clothes on!  Also tonight, The Good Wife returns with a new episode.  I want Will Gardner back!  He is, of course, not coming back but I feel sure his untimely death is going to play a pivotal role in how the rest of this season unfolds!

Until later..enjoy your evening!
