Serena is the Champion in Miami, and oh that Dance!

Serena Williams is the Champion!  Once again, Serena has won the Sony Open in Miami, coming back from a 2-5 deficit in the first set to defeat Li Na, 7-5, 6-1.  Take note…Li Na played well, she is after all the world #2 while Serena is world #1.  Serena is just that good.  Li Na was serving for the first set at 5-4 and Serena broke back and then went on to serve out the first set.  The second set, well the scoreline says it all, 6-1.  Congrats to Serena.

Tomorrow, another Djokovic-Nadal battle, hopefully another epic and entertaining one.  The conditions in Miami were very windy and overcast today…have to wait and see what tomorrow brings.  Those weather conditions in south Florida are always ever changing!

Moving on to the “Dance”, some really great games last night!  Michigan over Tennessee, 73-71, U Conn over ISU, 81-76, Kentucky over defending champion Louisville, 74-69 (Ashley Judd is smiling somewhere), and finally, UVA went down to Michigan State, 61-59 in a thriller.  Hate to see the Cavs falter (being an ACC fan and all) but all credit to the Spartans.

Today, overall number one seed Florida will take on this year’s Cinderella, Dayton and then next, another number one seed still around, Arizona will face Wisconsin.  Hope these two games are as good as the four games last night.  My elite eight is looking pretty bad about now, how about yours?

Later…

Sony Open results

Sony Open in Key Biscayne rolls on and some results are as expected, some unexpected!  Serena Williams took care of Maria Sharapova, 6-2, 6-3.  The scoreline is a bit deceptive, fairly close match but Serena did what she does, beat Sharapova.  Li Na advanced over the diminutive but competitive D. Cibulkova in three tough sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3.  Glad to see Li Na advance into the final.  So, S. Williams vs. Li Na for the women’s title.

On the men’s side, K. Nishikori has withdrawn due to a groin injury.  WOW, after upsetting Federer (and upsetting me) Nishikori forced to give Djokovic a walkover into the final.  Rafael Nadal took care of M. Raonic, but not without dropping a set, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.  He will face Thomas Berdych tonight to earn the right to play Nole for the men’s title.  Have to expect we are in store for another Nadal – Djokovic battle (but one never knows…)

In “The Dance”, top seeds Arizona and Florida advanced while the 2014 Cinderella team, Dayton awaits after beating Stanford the night before last.  Florida will face Dayton and will determine if the clock strikes twelve and Cinderella goes home, or continues to dance!  Was a bit sad to see two west coast teams fall last night (San Diego State and UCLA).  OK, so check your brackets and see how you are doing.  I still have three correct in my final four, the exception being the Dukies, what a disappointing upset that was!

Later…

Well, to quote John McEnroe..”you cannot be serious”?  Now, Berdych has withdrawn giving Rafa a walkover.  So, Djokovic and Nadal advance to the final without hitting one single ball in a semifinal match.  Very disappointing…imagine how the fans felt who bought tickets!  Want to note that Roger Federer does not do “walkovers”.  Anyhow….the men’s final will be as expected…Rafa vs. Nole!

Surviving “Paradise” and Federer upset (bummer!)

I missed Surviving “Paradise” day yesterday (Wednesday) so here we are a day late and a dollar short (literally)!!  Also, to add insult to injury, Roger Federer was upset last night in Miami by K. Nishikori in the quarterfinals at the Sony Open, 3-6, 5-7, 4-6.

Gee, it was so insulting, they did not even show the match live…rather they put it on at 1:00 am EST on ESPN2.  I watched it on my computer on ESPN3.  What were they thinking?  Probably that it was a “give me”, Federer would win and advance to face Djokovic in the semifinals.  Sort of disrespectful to Nishikori, even though noone is more disappointed than me in the result!  Federer seemed more uncomfortable than he has in the past couple of months, his first serve was not on, he made way too many unforced errors, and all credit to Nishikori who has beaten Nadal and Wawrinka as of late.  Non the less, Roger made it into the quarters of a tournament that he has not played in the past two years, points were accrued and he made up ground on David Ferrer (ousted in the round of sixteen) and countryman Wawrinka (also ousted prior).  So Federer wins in the desert at Dubai, makes it to the final at Indian Wells, losing to Djokovic in three thrilling sets ( what a glorious experience it was!) and then goes down in the cool, very windy conditions at night in Miami to K. Nishikori.  Have to say Federer, while looking very complacent in this match, looks very good heading into the clay court season in 2014.  Congrats to Nishikori who will face Novak Djokovic in the semifinals!  Nole took care of Andy Murray in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.  A bit of controversy, Djokovic hit a ball over the net, he did not touch the net, but he definitely hit the ball over the other side of the net.  Murray was then distracted and dropped the first set.  Not really sure it made any difference in the outcome of this match, but hey these guys are pros, they should know the rules…right?

On the women’s side, Li Na survived a tough two set match with C. Wozniacki last night, winning 7-5, 7-5 and will face the fireball known as D. Cibulkova in the semifinals.  Today, Serena Williams does what she usually does, defeat Maria Sharapova!  Serena advances, 6-2, 6-3.  Serena owns Sharapova, let’s face it!

Today, T. Berdych fought off Dolgopolov, 6-4, 7-5 and now we await the outcome of tonight’s match, Nadal vs. Raonic.  I would love to see M. Raonic pull off the upset but I gotta go with Nadal!

Roger picked up some valuable points by playing in Miami since he did not play last year, but he looked off last night, as I said earlier, his first serve let him down and way too many unforced errors.  I know what that windy, cold weather can be like, and Federer had looked so sharp in his previous matches, not facing a break point.  All in all, still a good 2014 for Mr. Federer so far.  He really excelled in “the desert”!  Too bad about Miami, but we will always have Indian Wells!!!!

Now, about Surviving “Paradise”.  Please check out my book at Amazon.com, available in paperback for $8.99 in paperback, $4.99 in kindle edition, and $4.99 at Barnes and Noble nook.  It is a funny and entertaining story about neighborhood mayhem in southwest Florida.  If you have had a bad neighbor, you can relate.  If not (good for you), you can read and enjoy and say, “oh my”!!Surviving Paradise

In NBA action, the best of the east met and the Pacers prevailed over LeBron and Miami, 84-83, surviving a late surge by the Heat.  LeBron had 39 points.  Pulling for the Pacers!  Go Indy!

The Dance resumes tonight. the sweet sixteen!  I have eleven of the sixteen in my bracket, how are you doing?

Last night, ABC hit drama Nashville gave us a new episode and the drama that this show rolls out is almost hard to keep up with.  I have to wonder if Rayna and Luke will stay together (of course not, it is a nighttime soap opera) or will her and Deacon ultimately succumb to the bond of their years together and having a child (Maddie).  You have to watch this show to really get it!

OK, enough for now..enjoy the basketball, the tennis, or perhaps Greys Anatomy and Parenthood?  Maybe, all of them!!  That is my plan.

Big day at Sony Open…all the top men in action (Round of 16)

What a huge day of tennis is on tap today from the Sony Open in Miami…the round of 16 for the men…all the top guys in action.  Sandwiched in between…two women’s quarterfinals!

The men’s lineup is as follows: Djokovic vs. T. Robredo (Nole wins, 6-3, 7-5); Ferrer vs. Nishikori (going three!); Nadal vs. Fognini; Federer vs. Gasquet; Wawrinka vs. Dolgopolov; Murray vs. Tsonga (could be interesting?); Isner vs. Berdych (important match for Isner, the last American male left standing!); Raonic vs. Becker.  In between these great matchups…Sharapova will take on Kvitova (who dispatched Ivanovic yesterday in an odd match, 3-6, 6-0. 6-0!) and also Serena Williams vs. A. Kerber  Two other women’s quarterfinals will take place tomorrow.  Really sad to see Venus Williams fall to D. Cibulkova last night in three sets, 1-6, 7-5, 3-6.  Good to see Venus looking healthy and strong after her health struggles over the past two years.  She is really a class act.  But then again, congrats to the diminutive Cibulkova, tiny in height but very powerful.  I love the way she describes herself, happy and full of energy, just like her idol, Kim Clijsters (has there been a classier and/or more well liked women’s player that Kim?)!!   Meanwhile, A. Radwanska did manage to advance, in a grueling tough three set win over the teenager from the Ukraine, Svitolina, late yesterday.  Looks like Aggie is still going strong inspite of that nagging left knee injury (not to mention the shoulder problem she has carried for over a year).  Li Na is also into the quarters and is a real threat to take the title (hopefully husband, “Dennis” will not be asked to leave the stands as has happened in the past!!) Rafa is looking very strong, winning his match over Istomin in 59 minutes…still I am hoping Mr. Federer can get it done in Miami (coming up just short last week in beautiful Indian Wells, CA, three set loss to Nole).

Back later with all the “winners”!

And today’s winners….Sharapova over Kvitova, 7-5, 6-0 (Kvitova just sort of faded away in the second set); Serena Williams over A. Kerber, 6-2, 6-2.  Men’s action: Roger Federer over Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-2 (that would be in 49 minutes, better than Rafa’s 59 minute victory the other night!); Djokovic over T. Robredo, 6-3, 7-5; K. Nishikori over David Ferrer, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6 and now he will get Mr. Federer; Dolgopolov over Stan Wawrinka, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, Stan has faded a bit in the past two tournaments; Murray over Tsonga, 6-4, 6-1, setting up a nice quarterfinal with Djokovic; M. Raonic over B. Becker, 6-3, 6-4; and American John Isner fell to Thomas Berdych, 6-3, 7-5 (no more men from the USA left in the tournament).  Rafael Nadal is taking the court now to play Fognini of Italy…expect Rafa to get it done.

Another great day of tennis on tap tomorrow…until then!

P.S. Heavens, I almost forgot…breaking news from the world of pop culture.  Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin (Coldplay) have called it a day on their marriage (two kids).  Sad…

More Sony Open results…and “the Dance”

How about a few more results from the Sony Open in Miami!  Venus Williams won in three sets yesterday, defeating Dellacque of USA!  So nice to see Venus back to winning matches.  Also, Caroline Wozniacki took American Sloane Stephens to school, dispatching her 6-1, 6-0.  Tough loss for the young American.  G. Dimitrov (Sharapova’s guy) was taken out by K. Nishikori of Japan in two sets, 7-6, 7-5 (close but no cigar for Grigor!).  David Ferrer took care of A. Seppi to advance.  Roger Federer is hot on the heals of Ferrer, currently ranked #4 while Fed is ranked #5, but trails him by a mere 100 points in the rankings.  Since Roger did not play Miami last year, any points he picks up here are “gravy” and he has no points to defend.  Really nice to see Ferrer back in action after being out with an injury.  I though Novak Djokovic was going to take the court against F. Mayer of Germany but it seems like it has been days since Nole played.  Not sure what happened, too late, weather? (OK, got the word..he got a walkover!)  Anyhow, it is raining in Miami right now and Serena Williams is up on K. Vanderweghe of the USA, 4-2 in the first set.  Serena is not looking her best, but still she is a force, even when not at her best.  The great thing about rain delays in Miami…they show replays of Roger Federer’s matches!!!  Also on the schedule for today, Nadal vs. Istomin, Wawrinka vs. Edouard-Roger Vasselin, and Isner vs. Almagro.  Will have to wait and see how the weather affects the schedule. (Update: rain stops, Serena cruises, 6-3, 6-1!)

Moving on to “the Dance”, how about Kentucky taking out Wichita State…the first loss of the year for the latter.  Kentucky won in a thriller, 78-76 to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.  Funny thing…that was the one upset I got right in my bracket!!  Who would have known?

Finally…fans of The Good Wife are in an uproar today after last night’s episode.  Will Gardner, former co-worker and lover of lead character played by Julianna Margulies was killed last night by a deranged client in a courtroom episode, nut-job with a gun gone array kind of scene.  What a shocker!  Really kind of disappointing…but apparently Josh Charles who played the character of Will elected to not renew his contract..unknown to all of us, of course.  Really bummed!
