Tiger Woods wins for 8th time at Firestone!

For the record 8th time, Tiger Woods wins the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio with a final round of 70, finishing at -15.  It was a par day, protecting his seven shot lead for Tiger today.  He played along side Henrik Stenson who tied for second with Keegan Bradley at -8.  Jason Duffner, M. Jimenez, and Zach Johnson finished in third at -6.  Luke Donald came in fourth at -5.   Other big names, Rory Mcilroy finished at +2 and Phil Mickelson at +1, disappointing tournament for both.  Tiger had rounds of 66, 61, 68 and 70 in this victory.

This was Tiger’s 79th career victory, 2nd most all time behind Sam Snead at 82.  Clearly, once again Tiger heads into a major, next week’s PGA in Rochester, NY as the favorite after winning a big tournament the week before.  With 48 of the top 50 golfers in the world participating at Firestone, it is a huge win for Tiger.  But will the momentum carry over to the final major of the year next week?  Will certainly have to wait and see, PGA gets underway next Thursday (August 8th).  I really hope Tiger can break the five year drought and win next week at Oak Hill.

Very touching moment after Tiger’s win, son Charlie leaping into Daddy’s arms, hugging Daddy as they walked off the course up to the clubhouse to sign the score card.  Rare personal insight into Tiger as “Daddy” not often seen.

Meanwhile, in Lexington, Ohio, Charlie Kimball won his first ever Izod Indy race.  Charlie suffers from diabetes and it is the first race won by a diabetic racer.  Charlie was joined by teammate Dario Franchitti on the podium, Dario coming in at 3rd.  Fellow teammate Scott Dixon had won this race more than other other driver in history, but today was all about Charlie Kimball.  Congrats to him and Gnassi Race team for another victory.  S. Pagenaud came in 2nd, Will Power was 4th, and Ryan Hunter-Reay was 5th.  Dario has finished 7th or better in the past seven road races (“parades” as my Indy insider calls them) and it was his third podium finish this year (still has not won a race outright).

Moving on, it is all happening in Ohio today as the NFL Hall of Fame game from Canton, Ohio kicks off the preseason tonight with Miami and Dallas facing off.  Gee, is it really time for football?  Apparently so…let’s get ready for some football!!

Pop culture note:  Unforgettable with Poppy Montgomery and Dylan Walsh on CBS tonight at 9:00 pm EST.  GREAT SHOW!

The Tiger Woods show at Akron, Ohio

It is all about Tiger Woods at Akron, Ohio, the site of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Golf Tournament.  He shot a 68 today, leads the pack at -15 and this round (day 3) follows a day one round of 66 and and a day two round of 61.  The second place guy, Henrik Stenson is at -8, a mere 7 strokes off the lead set by Woods.  So folks, so far this tournament is really all about Tiger Woods, his superb performance, and how brilliant he is on this golf course in particular.  He will be dressed in his typical Sunday red tomorrow, atop the leaderboard, going for his 8th championship at Firestone, his 5th tournament victory of the year, and his 79th career victory (chasing Sam Snead at 82).  Will he get it done?  Hard to imagine any other scenario than Tiger Woods winning this golf tournament tomorrow.  48 of the top 50 golf players in the world are competing at this tournament, a mere week ahead of the final major, the PGA at Oak Hill in Rochester, NY.   If Tiger gets it done (surely he will!) then he goes into the PGA as the favorite.  However, this has happened before, so it will remain to be seen if Tiger can win his first major and end the five year drought next week.

But back to the tournament currently in progress, Tiger is on fire.  He had a bit of an adventure today as far as his driving game, but the hole in on the 13th hole was absolutely “stupid good”!!  After day three, the leaderboard stands at Tiger Woods -15, H. Stenson -8, Jason Duffner -7, Chris Wood, Luke Donald, and Bill Haas -6, Keegan Bradley (playing along side Tiger today) and M. Jimenez  both at -5.  Other notables include Steve Stricker, Rickie Fowler and Bubba Watson at -2.  Both Rory Mcilroy and Phil Mickelson came in at E par after today’s round.

Tomorrow, coverage beginning at 2:00 pm EST on CBS will feature Mr. Woods in red for sure with a seven stroke lead, looking to do what Tiger does, close it out in style.  Stay tuned…I think he gets it done!

Tiger Woods leads Bridgestone Invitational at -13

Boy, oh boy does Tiger Woods love this golf course.  For the second time in his career, Tiger Woods shot a spectacular round of golf today at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, a round of 61 (30 on front nine, 31 on back nine) and he sits atop the leaderboard at -13 with a seven shot lead.  It was truly Tiger at his best. (9 under par on today’s round)  He was in the zone, at least until the 18th hole, which he made a mess of, and then still with a magnificent putt managed to par it to remain at -13.  Playing along side him was Matsuyama who finished up at E.  After day two, the leaderboard is currently: Tiger Woods -13, Keegan Bradley and Chris Wood at -6, Bill Haas and Henrik Stenson at -5, Jim Furyk, Luke Donald, Bubba Watson and Jason Duffner at -4.  Rain came in late in today’s round and more rain is in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow morning.  Coverage of round three will begin at noon on Golf Channel and then switch over to CBS at 2:00 pm EST, weather permitting.

Other notables today include the following: Rickie Fowler -2, Webb Simpson -2, Zach Johnson -1 and Dustin Johnson E.  Rory Mcilory finished at +1 and Phil Mickelson a disappointing +3.

What a day of golf by Tiger Woods on a course he truly loves to play.  Can he keep it up tomorrow and into Sunday?  Stay tuned!

Roger Federer withdraws from Rogers Cup

Roger Federer has pulled out of the Rogers Cup in Montreal, Canada which begins next Monday.  First, apologies as I believe I have referred to it as taking place in Toronto in some previous posts.  It is in Canada!  Also, no reason given.  Come on guys!  He has a bad back and is trying to get his timing and comfort level where it needs to be with a new larger Wilson racquet.  If Roger is not healthy, he should not play.  I would expect him to return for the event in Cincinnati the following week (he is the defending champion) if his back allows.  Of course, he wants to be in the best form possible for the US Open.  Calm down everyone, Roger will be OK.  I know it, he knows it, and all of you know it as well!

I hope to see new movie, 2 Guns with Denzel Washington and Mark Walhberg sometime, hopefully early next week.  Look for my recap.  Seems like a good one, love the pairing of these two.

Meanwhile, we have golf taking place in Ohio with Tiger and many others in action.  Back later with day two results!

Tiger Woods tied for third after day one at Bridgestone Invitational

Day one at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron, Ohio, finds Tiger Woods tied for third place, shooting a round of 66 and coming in at -4.  Tiger shot a sizzling 31 on the first nine holes and wound up the day with a 35 on the back nine.  Four birdies for Tiger on the front nine.  The PGA Championship (fourth and final major of 2013) looms and all of the big names are in Akron for this event.  After day one, the leaderboard is as follows: Webb Simpson at -6 (round of 64, WOW!), Henrik Stenson at -5, Tiger Woods, Keegan Bradley, Chris Wood and Luke Donald, all at -4, and Jason Duffner, Bubba Watson and Rickie Fowler at -3.  Other notables, Rory Mcilroy at E for the day, Phil Mickelson, fresh off his British Open victory at +2 along with Matt Kuchar and Brandt Snedeker.

Should be a great weekend of golf, the weather is spectacular and Tiger loves this golf course.  Final tune up for all the top guys before the last major golf tournament of 2013.

In College Football news, the USA Today Coaches preseason poll came out today!  (Oh, my, don’t we all just love these preseason polls!)  Here it is for all who place stock in these sorts of things! 1. Alabama, 2. Ohio State (some feel Ohio State should be in the #1 slot), 3. Oregon (happy to see them there!), 4. Stanford (even happier to seen them there!) 5. Georgia (I am a GT fan so, no comment), 6. Texas A & M (Johnny Manziel is on the cover of SI, wonder if the SI curse will go into effect this season?), 7. South Carolina 8. Clemson (top ranked ACC team, FSU is in top twenty) 9. Louisville, and 10. Florida.

Less than a month til the start of College Football.  Are you ready?

Wednesday, promote Surviving “Paradise” the book day!

OK, it is Wednesday and this week I am not going to forget my Wednesday mission, promote my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.

But first, a few other notables.  In sports, Andrelton Simmons, SS for the Atlanta Braves is really getting some well deserved hype.  The throw he made to the plate last night (an out!!) in the Braves 11- 3 win over the Rockies was spectacular.  Already talking about him being an All Star next year…seems a long way off but anyhow, good for him and his confidence!

Some really great summer shows to consider:  King and Maxwell on TNT on Monday’s at 10:00 pm EST; Motive on ABC at 9:00 pm EST on Thursdays; and finally, Unforgettable with Poppy Montgomery and Dylan Walsh has returned!!  The long awaited return of this show (cancelled twice by CBS) took place this past Sunday evening.  It will air on CBS at 9:00 pm EST on SundaysSurviving "Paradise".  Carrie and “Big time Al” have now joined the homicide team in Manhattan.  Love this show and so happy to see it back!

Now to the matter of the day, please check out my book Surviving “Paradise”!  It is a really entertaining read, “hilarious” were the words of a recent reader.  Just received the first twelve pages of a screenplay for this book I am working on and am looking for more pages this week!  Gotta read, and hopefully, gotta see film/TV in the future!  It is available at Amazon.com for $9.99 in paperback, $4.99 in kindle edition and also at Barnes and Noble nook for $4.99.  Check it out, you won’t be sorry!

P.S. The WGC-Bridgestone International Golf Tournament gets underway tomorrow!  Tiger and Rory are both in the field!

Roger Federer has a bad back! and other sports news…

Roger Federer has an aching back and it is apparently a bigger problem than we have been led to believe.  It was first rumored that he had his back taped while playing in Hamburg, Germany, testing out a new larger Wilson racquet.  He suffered a loss in the semifinals and it was a disappointing one.  Then, returning home to Switzerland, he lost his opening match to D. Brands of Germany at the Swiss Open at Gstaad in two sets and one had to wonder, what is wrong?  Sure, Federer is 31, approaching 32, and has won only one title this year (grass court tournament at Halle, Germany prior to Wimbledon).  He lost at Wimbledon and his record of 36 consecutive quarterfinals in Grand Slams went by the wayside.  So, is it really Fed on the decline, or is there more here than meets the eye?  Well, first of all, Federer is not the dominating force he was for a decade, of course.  There is Nadal, albeit with his fragile aching knees, and then there is the dynamic duo of Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic, both younger and in their prime.  But, just a year ago, Roger won Wimbledon and regained the number one ranking in the world, breaking Pete Sampras’s record of weeks at number one in the process of holding onto it well into the fall.  So, again, what is really going on?  First, there is the adjustment to the new racquet for sure.  Interesting that Fed has decided to try and make this adjustment at this point, hoping to re-tune his majestic game and prolong his ability to compete and win (yes, I said win) against the other top players.  But word is now coming out that his back is in fact a problem for him at this point in time.  He was taking antiflammatories at the match in Switzerland.  Roger must get his health squared away first and foremost as the US Open looms a mere month away (his final opportunity at a Grand Slam this year).  Will he play Toronto and then Cincinnati as he has planned since his 2013 schedule was announced?  It remains to be seen, but a healthy Roger Federer at 31 or even 32 on “his” day is capable of beating anyone, and I do mean anyone.  So, the aching back must be tended to.  Here’s to hoping the back problem is solved as the North American hard court season cranks up in early August.  I definitely want to see Roger Federer competing at his best, new racquet and all!

Hard to believe that we are only a month away from the start of College Football season!  Are we ready???  Then, a couple of week later, NFL kicks off.  Gee, since Alabama won the National Championship and Baltimore won the Super Bowl, we have seen three of the four majors in golf; Adam Scott wining the Masters, Brandt Snedeker winning the US Open and then Phil Mickelson having a magical Sunday of golf to win his first British Open last weekend.  We have now had three different winners of three of the four Grand Slams in tennis; Djokovic taking the Australian Open, Rafael Nadal winning the French Open and Andy Murray ending the long drought and winning Wimbledon (first British man since Fred Perry).  We have the PGA at Oak Hill in Rochester, NY for the final major of the year in golf coming up (can Tiger get it done and win a major for the first time in four years?) and then we of course have the US Open in Flushing Meadow, NY coming up at the end of August.  Can Roger Federer get healthy and be a factor?  Interesting questions as we look ahead to these events with the start of what is arguably the most popular time of year in America, the kickoff of College Football and the NFL?

On a personal note, I hope the Atlanta Falcons finally get it done this year, and ignore all the media predictions, watch out for my Georgie Tech Yellow Jackets in the ACC!!

Over and out for now…

Surviving “Paradise” on Thursday! and a bit of sports news too…

Oops!  Wednesday came and went and I forgot to promote my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.  So, I shall do so today, but in a bit!

First, Matt Ryan signs a very lucrative new deal with the Atlanta Falcons, 5 years, 103.75 million.  Good news!  Matty Ice will be staying in the ATL for a while.  Meanwhile, rumor is John Abraham has left the Falcons, signing a contract with the Arizona Cardinals.  So, good news, bad news.

Speaking of bad news, awful injury to Atlanta Braves pitcher Tim Hudson last night at Citi Field in NY.  The Braves beat the Mets 8 -2 but lost “Huddie” for the rest of the season.  He suffered a fractured ankle covering first base on a ground ball hit by the Mets’ Eric Young, Jr.  Freeman made the play and the throw, Hudson was on the bag, but unfortunately Young stepped right on Hudson’s foot, gruesome to watch, as you saw the ankle snap back.  Young felt horrible and was the first player over to check on Hudson along with Freeman, Brave’s manager Gonzalez and the trainer.  Word is he will have surgery once the swelling goes down and is done for the year.

Continuing with bad news, Roger Federer fell in his first match played in Gstaad, Switzerland to D. Brands, 6 – 3, 6 – 4.  This is a small indoor clay court tournament and Fed has been trying to test out the larger 98″ Wilson racquet he is switching to after a decade of using the Wilson 90″ racquet.  Things are not going well, and as a Fed fanatic, I am now a bit concerned.  A long time believer that Roger could play as long as he wanted and still win, even win majors, I am becoming concerned.  However, I know it takes time to adjust to a new racquet, the timing, the precision, all the components that make Roger’s game the “beautiful game” in tennis.  So, hit the pause button,  let’s see what happens next month at the Rogers Cup in Toronto.  (I am keeping my fingers crossed).

And now, for the event of the day, albeit one day late, everybody please check out and read my book Surviving “Paradise”  It is a very entertaining story of neighborhood mayhem in southwest Florida.  It is available at Amazon.com for $9.99 in paperback, $4.99 in kindle edition, and $4.99 at Barnes and Noble nook.  P.S.  I am working with a ghostwriter to produce a screenplay on the book which I will be sending out to agents, producers, etc.  Should be getting the first 25 pages by tomorrow!  EXCITING, or at least I sure hope so!

Federer set to compete at Gstaad Indoor Tournament

Roger Federer is back home in Switzerland ready to compete at the Gstaad Indoor tournament with his new 98″ prototype Wilson racquet.  This marks a change for Fed, who has competed with a 90″ Wilson racquet for over a decade.  He played his first tournament in Hamburg, Germany last week with the new racquet and the result was a mixed bag.  He lost in the semifinals to qualifier Delbonis.  At times he looked very sharp, at other times, the timing simply was not there.  Also, reports are his back was taped at the event in Hamburg, so perhaps the aching back he struggles with from time to time is a bit of a problem.  At any rate, he is playing in these smaller tournaments, trying to get his timing and comfort level where it needs to be with the new larger frame racquet (the racquet is tweaked constantly and is a work in progress) as he prepares to head to Toronto for the Rogers Cup Masters 1000 Tournament in just over a week.  He is next scheduled to compete in Cincinnati before the US Open in Flushing Meadow, NY, the final Grand Slam event of this 2013 tennis season.  This has been a bit of a lackluster year for Roger, especially when measured by “Federer standards” and he is currently only ranked #5 in the world according to the ATP rankings.  One has to expect it will take a bit of time and experimenting for Roger to get his comfort level where he wants it with the new Wilson racquet, especially after so many years of using what was one of the smallest racquets on the ATP tour.  To show their  appreciation for Federer playing in the Gstaad event for the first time since 2004 (he won it, of course), he has been presented with a gift from the tournament officials, a COW!  I mean after all, what in the world do you give a man who has virtually everything!

Roger is scheduled to face D. Brands of Germany in his first match at this event on Wednesday.
