How about the Spurs! Defeat Miami in game one, 92-88

How about the Spurs.  They go to Miami and defeat the Heat in game one of the NBA finals, 92 – 88.  Inspite of Lebron James’ triple double, the Spurs were too much for the Heat, simply superb.  The defense was outstanding, especially in the fourth period.  They outscored the Heat in the 4th period, 23 – 16 and only had four turnovers for the entire game.  Tony Parker was a man on a mission with 21 points, 10 points in the 4th period.  The shot over LeBron with the shot clock running down was phenomenal.  Tim Duncan had 20 points.  The Heat struggled from the free point line and just could not overcome the smothering defense thrown at them by the Spurs.  Quite a performance by the “old guys”.  Ray Allen of the Heat tossed in three 3 points shots but it was not enough, even along with LeBron, Bosh and Wade.  The Spurs look like a team that could take down the Heat.  Still, statistics show that the winner of game one has gone on to lose the series. But hey, that is the past, this is the present.  This Spurs team has fantastic players and a fantastic coach.  It was their seventh straight playoff victory and they are 7 -1 on the road in playoff games this season.  Do not count them out.  They just might make the magic happen and unseat the Heat!  GO SPURS!

(I am a Lakers fan, but if not LA, I am pulling for the  Spurs!)  Game two is Sunday night from Miami on ABC.

Serena and Sharapova into the final at French Open

Both Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova advanced today into the French Open women’s final, albeit in two very different fashions.  Serena took out S. Errani in forty five minutes, 6 – 0, 6- 1.  She is attempting to win her first French Open since 2002 which she won over big sis Venus.  Maria Sharapova found herself in a three set battle with Victoria Azarenka.  Maria won the first set, 6 – 2 and seemed in complete control of the match.  Then the wheels fell off a bit, specifically the serve (although neither of these women did a spectacular job of holding serve in this match) and she dropped the second set to Azarenka, 2 – 6.  Sharapova came back in the third to win 6 – 4.  She served for the match at 5 -2 but was broken but she did not let her second chance get away.  So Serena vs. Sharapova for the French Open title…prediction?  If Serena plays like she has played recently, gotta go with Serena Williams.

Interesting bit of rumor info…Sharapova v Azarenka is always aptly dubbed the “battle of the screamers”.  But, word has it that only one of these two women grunt and scream during both practice sessions and during their on court matches.  Guess which one?  Azarenka!  Apparently Maria manages to practice quietly, but screams during her matches.  Interesting….

No surprise, Nadal and Djokovic advance at French Open

No surprises today in Paris, well at least not really.  I guess Maria Sharapova losing the first set 6 – 0 to Jankovic could be a bit surprising?  Result was as expected, Sharapova advances in three sets and will face Azarenka (who also advanced) in the semifinals.  Um…I am pulling for Azarenka.  Serena Williams will face S. Errani in the other women’s semi.

On the men’s side, (sigh…still sad about Federer’s lackluster performance yesterday against Tsonga), Rafael Nadal took care of the other Swiss, Stan Wawrinka, without breaking a sweat, 6 – 3, 6 – 3, 6 – 1.  I believe Wawrinka is now 0 – 10 against Nadal.  Djokovic defeated Tommy Haas (35 years old!), 6 – 3, 7 – 6, 7 – 5.  A little bit more of a battle, but still the expected result.  So, we now await the semi between Nadal and Djokovic.  Excuse me for not being one of those sitting and waiting with baited breath.  It will be the same old slug fest that always takes place between these two.  I agree with John McEnroe, if what we have to look forward to is Murray, Djokovic and Nadal slugging it out in these incredibly long rallies, seeing who can hit the ball the hardest and extend the rally…boring!  We need different styles of play, serve and volley players like Raonic and Isner to mix things ups a bit.  Unfortunately, these guys just are not quite good enough to take out the top three (four, as I of course still include Mr. Federer as one of the group).  Even having Federer in the discussion makes for a more interesting match as Federer is more style and substance when he is on his game, looking to end points early, sort of ballet on the courts as opposed to a boxing match on the tennis courts.  Oh well…this is what we have  right now for the semifinals at this year’s French Open.  In the other match, the always entertaining J. Tsonga (now here is a guy who is capable of making things interesting!) will take on the other Spaniard, David Ferrer, the hardest working guy on the court besides Nadal.  Predictions????  I don’t know,  Serena vs. Sharapova perhaps, although I am pulling for Azarenka.  On the men’s side, anything could happen.  Stay tuned…action continues tomorrow and Friday!

Heat defeat Pacers in game 7, move into NBA finals

The Miami Heat are back into the NBA finals for the third year in a row.  They defeated the Pacers last night in Miami, 99 – 76.  It was never really close.  LeBron had 32 points and 6 rebounds and did get more help from his South Beach supporting cast of Wade and Bosh.  Not sure he needed too much help last night.  Roy Hibbert led the Pacers with 18 points and 8 rebounds while Paul George had a dismal performance, fouling out with over seven minutes to play in the 4th period.  He finished with a mere 7 points and 7 rebounds. Really a shame as he had been a superstar for the Pacers throughout this series.  The Heat led by fifteen points at the half after a huge 2nd period and all in all, it was a blowout!  Too bad for the Pacers who had really battled to make this a seven game series.

So, now on Thursday, the NBA Finals get underway (provided the Spurs have returned from vacationing in the Caymans!)  Should be a good series, not ready to declare the Heat winners of their second consecutive NBA title just yet.  The Spurs are going to be a really good test, and I am pulling for Tony Parker, Tim Duncan and company!  GO SPURS!

Federer ousted in three sets by Tsonga at French Open

Well, it has taken me awhile to digest this and be able to write about it.  It was just sad and painful to watch.  As a longtime Fed fan, it was brutal!  Roger Federer was beaten by J. Tsonga today in the quarterfinals of the French Open, 7 – 5, 6 – 3, 6- 3.  Straight sets, over, out and done.  Fed should have and could have won the first set, breaking Tsonga in the first and up a break and serving, only to find himself broken right back and then never ever looking like he was mentally or physically really in the match.  He had his few magnificent moments, but they were too few and far between.  Tsonga just took the match and never looked back.  On one shot, he hit Roger with the ball, going right at him, it was the right play, but Fed made no attempt at the ball while up at the net after hitting an approach shot.  Too many missed overheads by Fed, something you just are not used to seeing, regardless of who you pull for.  So, 36 straight Grand Slam quarters but he is out of the French Open and will now turn his attention to the grass courts in Halle, Germany in preparation for Wimbledon (still his best shot at winning another major to add to his record 17).  Meanwhile, Tsonga will move onto the semifinals on Friday to face David Ferrer, winner over Robredo in straight sets, 6 – 2, 6- 1, 6- 1.  After several tough five set come from behind victories at this year’s French Open, Robredo just ran out of gas and into the energizer bunny that is David Ferrer.

Tsonga is looking to become the first Frenchman to win this event since Yannick Noah won in 1983.  Still have to expect that the winner of the Nadal-Djokovic semifinal (provided both get through their quarterfinal matches tomorrow) will be the favorite.

On the women’s side, Serena William was tested, needing three sets to defeat the resurgent Kuznetsova, prevailing 6 – 1, 3 – 6, 6 – 3.  Serena has looked invincible until today, so it will be interesting to see how she fares when she faces Sara Errani in the semifinals.  Errani defeated A. Radwanska in two sets.

Still not happy after watching a very bad day at the office for Mr. Federer.

Nadal and Djokovic both advance today in Paris

Rafael Nadal advanced rather easily today over K. Nishikori, 6 -4, 6 – 1, 6- 3 sending him into the quarterfinals.  Also advancing was Novak Djokovic.  He dropped the first set to P. Kolschreiber but then rallied to take the next three sets, 6 – 3, 6 – 3, 6 – 4.  He advances into the quarterfinals as well.  Djokovic is playing with a heavy heart, having learned just a couple of days ago of the death of his childhood tennis coach.  He is heartbroken over the news and it is certainly distracting him a bit but one has to expect he will have her in his heart as he continues and play in her honor.  The resurgent thirty five year old Tommy Haas was a three set winner over Youzhny, 6 -1, 6 – 1, 6- 3.  Let’s hear it for the “old” guys!  The best match of the day was a grueling five set match won by Stan Wawrinka (the other Swiss guy) over R. Gasquet of France, 6 – 7, 4 – 6, 6 – 4, 7- 5, 8 – 6.  Wawrinka is a bull!  Way to go Stan.  Tomorrow, Roger Federer vs. J. Tsonga as the quarterfinals get underway.  Should be on live around 10:00 am EST on Tennis Channel and ESPN3 (on your computers for all of you at the office!)

Azarenka, Kirilenko, J. Jankovic and M. Sharapova all advanced on the women’s side into the quarters.  Sharapova took out the young American, Sloane Stephens in straight sets.  Kirilenko advanced over Mattek-Sands and Jankovic defeated Jamie Hampton.  Nice run for all three of those American women.

Indy Race – Day 2 from Detroit

The duel in Detroit concluded today with Simon Pagenaud emerging as the winner in this second race of the weekend from Belle Isles.  James Jakes finished in 2nd, Mike Conway (winner of race #1 on Saturday) came in 3rd, 4th place went to Scott Dixon and 5th place finisher, Dario Franchitti.  There was a huge crash involving ten cars and Will Power had to be restrained as he was, shall we say, rather upset with Sebastian Bordais.  He referred to him as going from a champ to a chump.  Oh well, everyone was OK and I am not a Will Power fan anyway.  Glad to see Dario in the top five and “Dixie” up there as well.

Oval racing returns next weekend from Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday.  I love the ovals!  Way more exciting than the street races, or “parades” as my Indy insider likes to call them.

Until next weekend…

Matt Kuchar win the Memorial Golf Tournament

Way to go Kuch!!!  GT grad Matt Kuchar won the Memorial Golf Tournament in the “house that Jack built” in Dublin, Ohio, topping the leaderboard at -12.  Kuchar is the only golfer to have won more than one tournament so far this year on the PGA tour besides world #1 Tiger Woods.  Speaking of Tiger, a horrific +8 for Tiger at this tournament, and a not much better and still awful finish at +6 for Rory Mcilroy.  Both will look to regroup and get ready for the US Open which starts June 13th.  The second place finisher today was Kevin Chappell at -10 and third place went to Kyle Stanley -7 (both of them playing along side Kuchar).  Bill Haas and Scott Stallings finished at -6.

Sorry folks, did not watch til the end, still recovering from pulling Roger Federer through that five set win over G. Simon at the French Open to extend his record of consecutive quarterfinal appearances in Grand Slams to 36!

There will be a game seven, Pacers take game six over Heat

There will be a game seven in the Eastern Conference finals.  The Pacers took out the Heat in Indy last night in game six to even the series at 3-3 with a 91 – 77 victory.  Paul George and Roy Hibbert were the leaders of the band.  Hibbert had 24 points and 11 rebounds and Paul George had 28 points, 8 rebounds and three very important 3 points shots.  LeBron had 29 points for Miami but the supporting cast of Wade and Bosh was missing in action.  This was the lowest combined point total for the South Beach trio since they came together.  37% from the floor was the lowest shooting percentage ever for this Miami team, very dismal.  LeBron needs help from his teammates if they are going to make a return trip to the NBA finals (the Spurs are somewhere relaxing, cooling their heels awaiting the outcome of this series!)  Have to hand it to the Pacers, facing elimination in front of their home crowd, they rose to the occasion.  Now, can they go to Miami on Monday night and take this series?  Going to be tough, but I am pulling for them.  Let’s go Pacers!
