College Football news…

Jadeveon Clowney, defensive standout for the University of South Carolina is in a bit of a pickle.  Because the NFL requires that players who enter the NFL draft have completed three years of college, Clowney, a junior next season, is trying to figure out a path that is best for him and his future.  He would probably be a top draft choice this year but he is not eligible.  There are those who have even suggested that he sit out his junior season to avoid the possibility of any injury.  Clowney is reportedly looking into insuring himself for $5 million dollars.  Kind of makes sense, that way he can play and worse case scenario, he comes out with no less than $5 million for himself and his family.  Gotta think that if he makes it to the draft ,that would pale in comparison to his signing bonus…wishing him a healthy junior year and much success in the NFL.

Speaking of NCAA college football, there is a proposal that is currently being bantered about that beginning next year, “hits to the head of a defenseless player” will result in ejection.  Always trying to make things safer…unfortunately football is a violent sport and injuries happen.  Take fellow South Carolina player Marcus Lattimore, disaster struck him two years in a row. (He has declared for the NFL draft)  But, that being said, it does make sense to at least attempt to protect players in all ways possible.

Good news for Redskins fans

Some good news for the Washington Redskins and their fans today.  Reportedly, RG III is expected to recover from his serious knee injury and subsequent surgery and be ready to start the season opener.  This sounds wonderful, but of course, it is “wait and see” kind of news.  Encouraging for RG III and the Redskins non the less.

Say good bye to a Big East rivalry game

6 Syracuse and U Conn met last night for the last night, bringing to an end a long standing and always anticipated Big East match up.  Syracuse heads to the ACC next year.  U Conn was “snubbed” by the ACC.  They are also under a postseason ban this year, so they are eligible for the journey, but not the tourney!  They certainly played like a tournament worthy team last night, beating the visitors from 6 Syracuse, 66 – 58.  Again, I will say it once more, it is tough to win on the road.

Also going down last night was 11 Butler, who fell to Charlotte, 69 – 71.

It has been a crazy year in college basketball so far, and there is so much more to come!

Happy 66th Birthday to Coach K

Coach K celebrated his 66th birthday yesterday.  He also celebrated with his players a huge victory over rival North Carolina at Cameron Indoor Stadium last night, 73 – 68.  The game was very close throughout, with North Carolina jumping out to a lead.  The smaller team they put on the floor had Duke confused a bit in the early goings and Duke trailed at the half, 29 – 33.  In the second half they made one of their patented runs and never trailed again.  However, the Tarheels hung around, always lurking and the victory was not secure until the final seconds ticked away.  A glaring issue for North Carolina was extremely poor free throw shooting, one could even speculate it perhaps cost them the game.  None the less, 2 Duke (#1 in Coaches poll) remains undefeated at home.  They have certainly circled the March 2 rematch with 3 Miami at Cameron Indoor as Miami embarrassed them in the first meeting this year in Miami.  Also, North Carolina will host Duke on March 9th.

One of the incredible things about this storied rivalry is the fans.  The ESPN announcers commented on the “Cameron crazies” that had camped out for six (6) weeks, twelve (12) people to a tent in order to have tickets for this game last night.  Gotta love it!

Staying in the ACC, 3 Miami survived a tremendous effort by FSU in Leon County Civic Center to stay atop the ACC, winning over the Noles 74 – 68.  Shane Larkin (Miami) is playing himself into serious consideration for player of the year in the ACC.  But of course, Mason Plumlee of Duke, well that is going to be a tough act to beat.  Plumlee is likely a strong candidate for National player of the year.

Federer wins first match in Rotterdam

Roger Federer won his first match in Rotterdam today (indoor hardcourt) advancing over G. Zemija, 6 – 3, 6 -1.  Coverage of this event begins tomorrow on Tennis Channel.  No complaints coming from Roger regarding the surface!  (see earlier post regarding Nadal and Roger)  With Roger Federer in action and Josh Duhamel in the movie Safe Haven, I am thinking Valentine’s Day should be a pretty great day!!  Happy early Valentine’s Day everyone!

P.S. New episode of ABC hit drama Nashville on tonight at 10:00 pm EST.  Also, North Carolina vs. Duke from Cameron Indoor Stadium!

Coach K says no

With the North Carolina vs. Duke basketball game on for our viewing pleasure this evening, there comes a bit of new regarding Duke head coach, most often referred to as simply Coach K.  He has indicated he will not coach the US Olympic team in the 2016 Olympics.  Oh well, all good things must perhaps come to an end??

Speaking of the Olympics, the IOC announced that wrestling would no longer be a part of Olympic competition beginning in 2020.  Talk about an uproar!  Twitter was a flutter and all the sports shows were in a state about it.  I am sorry, I don’t really get it.  I know that from a traditional standpoint, wrestling was an important part of the Olympics, the Greco-Roman tradition, etc.  But ever since I figured out the WWE and Live Atlanta Wrestling were fake, I have not been much of a fan.  I know there are many wrestling fans out there.  Don’t despair, more than likely this will in fact change before we ever get to the 2020 Olympic Games; wrestling will probably be “reinstated” as an Olympic sport.  Let’s wait and see…

LeBron makes history, Kobe off the mark

LeBron James made NBA history last night, scoring over 30 points and shooting 60% for the sixth straight game.  Never been done before!  Not even MJ (Michael Jordon), and therefore, of course now all the sports shows begin with the comparisons.  By the way, Miami won, defeating the Trail Blazers, 117 – 104.  Sort of silly to compare “LJ” (as Lebron says he should be referred to) and “MJ”.  Different type of players, body types, and much more.  LeBron is almost a freak of nature with his size and shooting abilities, not to mention great defense.  Still, most consider Micheal Jordan to still be the “GOAT”, ever popular label of greatest of all time.  A more reasonable comparison based on body type and style of play would be Jordan and Kobe Bryant.

Speaking of Kobe, he had a really poor shooting night last night, scoring a mere 4 points with numerous turnovers and misses although he did have 9 assists.  His attempts to change his style of play to help the Lakers, becoming more a facilitator may sometimes hamper his scoring performance.  They do have Steve Nash to distribute the ball.  That being said, the Lakers did win over the Suns, 91 – 85 and Dwight Howard had 19 points and 18 rebounds.  A win is a win, but Kobe will have to score more points in addition to trying to involve his teammates when they face the Clippers.  I like what Coach Mike D’Antoni said, hey, it is Kobe Bryant, he entitled to an off shooting night once in seventeen years!

25 Kentucky loses more than just the game

25 Kentucky fell to 7 Florida last night and fell hard, going down 69 – 52.  Adding insult to injury, no pun intended, star freshman forward Nerlens Noel suffered a gruesome leg injury and had to be carried off the court.  The good news is that x rays were negative, no break or fracture found.  He will undergo an MRI today.  Too bad for this young man as many projected him to be the number one pick in the NBA draft…another in a long line of Kentucky one and done stars heading right into the NBA.

Elsewhere, 4 Michigan went down on the road to rival 10 Michigan State, 75 – 52.  This was a good old fashion tail kicking but remember it is tough on the road and rivalry games are crazy.  The Michigan State crowd which was very loud and boisterous wearing  t shirts that said You Off, a parody on the t shirts worn by Michigan and their fans, Me On.  Gotta love rivalries!

Speaking of rivalries, probably the greatest one in all of college basketball comes on tonight, NC visits 1 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium.  Now if you want to see fan zaniness at it’s best, tune in!!!

Breaking news:  Update on injury to Kentucky’s Noel.  He suffered a torn ACL and will be out for the rest of the year.  He is expetecd to have surgery in 2 – 3 weeks.  Really tough break for him and Kentucky!

Rafa and Roger

Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.  Two of the greatest ever (Fed being the greatest of all time in my humble and unbiased (not) opinion).  A tale of two attitudes.  Rafa is currently speaking out about how difficult it is for tennis athletes to play so many tournaments on hard courts.  Well, tennis is a four surface sport.  It is not just a clay court event.  There is clay, grass, hard- courts, and indoor hard-courts, some hard-courts being fast and some being slower.  Rafa has really struggled with his health due to the wear and tear his style of play puts on his body, particularly the knees.  He is the undisputed King of clay, yet Roger Federer has been the second best clay court player in the world for a decade.  Roger is starting play tomorrow in Rotterdam and when interviewed about Rafa’s return, he said he was happy to see Rafa back although somewhat surprised by his loss in Chile. (weren’t we all!)  He then proceeded to joke that he had hoped that perhaps Rafa would come back as a “right handed” player!  Since Rafa as a lefty and has been such a thorn in Roger’s side, you gotta love the humor/sarcasm.  All kidding aside, it is great to see Rafa returning.  I know Roger who is good friends with Rafa is sincerely glad to see him return.  It is great for tennis and tennis fans.

Looking forward to seeing Mr. Federer in action tomorrow through Sunday (hopefully!)  Too bad, Tsonga lost and is out in Rotterdam.
