Federer into the final in Halle

Roger Federer advanced in the finals of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany today by virtue of a two set win over K. Nishikori, 6-3, 7-6.  Roger has won this title six times and tomorrow he will go for number 7 as Wimbledon looms and gets underway June 23rd.  Very funny moment occured when in the tie break, Roger was serving on match point and after a brief exchange, Nishikori’s ball landed in the net.  Game, set, match Federer, except Roger went back to the service line ready to go again!!  The crowd and Nishikori were all a bit puzzled and then Federer realized his mistake and threw up his hands as if to say…OK, oh my!!  Luthi (coach) and wife Mirka got a big kick out of it as did the entire crowd.  It even brought a smile to Nishikori’s face, even in defeat.  Gotta love Federer!!!

In the other semifinal, a bit of an upset as A. Falla defeated Phillip Kolschreiber of Germany, 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.  So, tomorrow (at some time of day that will not be great for those of us on the east coast of the US, 8:00 am EST I believe) Federer will face A. Falla for the title in Halle.  GO FED!

Congratulation to the LA Kings who defeated the NY Rangers in double OT last night to win the Stanley Cup!!  They needed a goal in the third period to send it into OT.  No goals scored in the first OT and then in the second OT, victory for LA.  I love LA!!

The US Open Golf Championships completed round three today.  The top five on the leaderboard: Martin Kaymer continues to lead (faltering a bit) at -8, here comes Rickie Fowler at -3 along with E. Compton.  Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson round out the top five at -2.  Kaymer shot two rounds of 65 (never been done before in the US Open) but today shot 72.  Still enough to keep him atop the leaderboard heading into tomorrow’s final round.  Other notables: world #1 Adam Scott at +3 along with Rory Mcilroy; Matt Kuchar is at even par and Brandt Snedeker finds himself in sixth place at -1; the wonder kid Jordan Spieth is at +1 and very disappointing performance for Mickelson, +5.

Guess everyone else out there is watching the World Cup.  I am waiting to see Messi and Ronaldo!

Have a good night!

P.S. One of my favorite “feel good” movies is on tonight..We Bought A Zoo starring Matt Damon and Scarlett Johansson!

How about those Spurs!

How about those Spurs!!  San Antonio ran away from the Heat in Miami (again) last night winning game four, 107-86.  They led at the half, 55-36 after leading earlier, 53-23!  Can we say Champions??  OK, calm down, maybe a bit early (or not) but game five will be in San Antonio on Sunday night and the Spurs can take the title if they win this game at home.  Dominating performance by the Spurs from the opening tip.  Kawhi Leonard had 20 points, 14 rebounds, 3 blocked shots, 3 steals, and 3 assists.  Is anyone else thinking finals MVP?  LeBron did his part for the Heat scoring 28 points but he had no help from his teammates.  When you really look at the show, you have to see that the Spurs have a better, deeper team!  GO SPURS!!!

Moving to tennis in Halle, Germany (the Gerry Weber Open), Roger Federer advanced into the semifinals thanks to a walkover by Yen Lu (back issue).  But, being Roger Federer, he played an exhibition match against German player, Christopher Kas.  Hey, Federer needs the grass court action and is, of course, aware of the people who bought tickets to see him play.  He will face Nishikori in tomorrow’s semi and it should be one heck of a match.  Dustin Brown, the German player who literally wiped #1 Rafael Nadal off the court fell to P. Kolschreiber in three sets, losing in a third set tie break (18-16).  Kolschreiber will face A. Falla in the other semifinal.  So as far as the “Big Four” goes…pre-Wimbledon, Nadal loses, Murray loses in England, Djokovic is resting, and Federer is in action and winning!  Footnote: Roger Federer has won this event six times already.

US Open Golf Championship is continuing with round two today.  Martin Kaymer is pretty much dominating the field, last I checked at -10.  Kevin Na in second at -4.  When I found out Mr. Federer was through into the semifinals, I went to see 22 Jump Street.  Very funny, silly and entertaining movie.  Light fare, love Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum.  After all, just under a couple of hours of watching Channing Tatum is never a bad afternoon.

Enjoy your Friday evening!

Nadal out in first match in Halle

Rafael Nadal, fresh off his 9th French Open title, is out after his first match on the grass courts in Halle, Germany.  Nadal lost to Dustin Brown, 6-4, 6-1.  WOW!  Nadal did not just lose, he was whipped!!  Huge win for Brown, the 85th ranked player in the world from Germany.  Welcome to grass court tennis action (although not as much faster as it was years ago).  So, out goes Rafa and that keeps the door open for Roger Federer to win Halle for the sixth or seventh time.  Federer was tested, but prevailed today over J. Sousa (from Portugal), 6-7, 6-4, 6-2.  Fed moves on, Rafa will begin preparation for Wimbledon.  Meanwhile, another member of the “Big Four”, Andy Murray lost in the other grass court “tune-up” in England.  So, the Big Four in action prior to Wimbledon, out goes Murray and Nadal, Federer wins, and Djokovic is resting.

Meanwhile, the US Open Golf Championship got underway today from Pinehurst Country Club.  After 15 holes, Martin Kaymer held the lead at -3.  In the interest of full disclosure, I watched Mr. Federer and the tennis.

Tonight, the Spurs at Miami for game four!!  The outcome of this game is going to be interesting.  Will the Heat roar back at home after that beat down on Tuesday in game three?  Or will the Spurs win and head back to San Antonio with a huge advantage.  We shall see…Jimmy Kimmel pregame show airs at 8:00 pm EST, then the pregame show, and finally the action gets underway at 9:00 pm EST.  Go Spurs!

What a performance by the Spurs!

What a performance by the Spurs last night in Miami in game three of the NBA finals, defeating the Heat 111-92.  The Spurs scored 41 points in the first period and it was a “team” effort the entire game.  Tony Parker had 15 points and showed great leadership.  Timmy was, well, Timmy!  And Leonard lit it up!!  Really interesting dynamic going on here.  Last year, the Spurs won game one, lost game two (in Miami) and then returned home to win big in San Antonio.  This year, the Spurs won game one going away, lost a close one in game two, and then went to Miami for game three and blew out the defending champs.  The difference…this year the Spurs have home court advantage!!  GO SPURS!  Game four on Thursday night.  By the way, hope you all caught the hilarious rant by Mila Kunis on the Jimmy Kimmel pregame show.  “We are pregnant”??  NOT.  Check YouTube if you missed it!  Also, pretty funny “three questions” with Kobe Bryant segment.

Meanwhile, in Halle, Germany, Mr. Federer has yet to serve.  Nor has Mr. Nadal for that matter.  I believe they will get underway tomorrow (but who knows when it will air on Tennis Channel with the time difference).  Federer will face J. Sousa and Rafa will face Dustin Brown.  Most of the guys are all having fun playing some doubles as well and Roger and his partner won today.  All roads lead to Wimbledon and it would be great to see a Federer – Nadal final!!  One can hope…

Motive airs tonight with a new episode on ABC, 10:00 pm EST.  If you haven’t watched this show, check it out.  It is a sassy, smart, very well done detective series.

And now….it is Wednesday and that means Surviving “Paradise” day!!  Please check out my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver at Amazon.com.  Follow a southern woman who relocates to a new town full of great expectations – only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances (and so much more!!)  Check out the Home page at this website for more info and also the Buy the Book option on the menu bar!

Over and out for now!!!!

Tennis rankings and more!

New tennis rankings came out on Monday (6/9) and a few changes…Men’s top ten: 1. Rafael Nadal, 2. Novak Djokovic (Nole could have become #1 with a win in the final at the French Open), 3. Stan Wawrinka (held onto third place despite an early exit at Roland Garros), 4. Roger Federer (thank heavens Fed stayed at #4 inspite of a disappointing fourth round loss in Paris), 5. Andy Murray (welcome back), 6. Thomas Berdych, 7. David Ferrer (dropping from #5), 8. Del Potro (been out quite awhile with wrist surgery), 9. Milos Raonic (so glad to see him in top ten), and 10. E. Gulbis (not so glad to see him in top ten but he is on a roll!)

Women’s top ten: 1. Serena Williams, 2. Li Na, 3. S. Halep (moves up from #4 after making the final at Roland Garros), 4. A. Radwanska (slips one place), 5. Maria Sharapova (moves up from #8 after winning second French Open in three years), 6. P. Kvitova (so talented, yet so unpredictable), 7. J. Jankovic, 8. Victoria Azarenka (she has been out since early exit at Indian Wells with foot injury), 9. A. Kerber and 10. D. Cibulkova

Now, Wimbledon looms so these rankings are important, especially for the top men.  It determines just how tough a road they will have making it into the all important second week.  Meanwhile, both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal are in Halle, Germany competing the grass court event held there this week.  They should both play their first matches tomorrow.  Should be really interesting if they could meet in the final, Nadal seeded #1, Fed #2.  Roger is the defending champion (the only title he won in 2013) and has won this tournament six times.  So…here’s to Roger making a great statement in Halle before Wimbledon.

NBA action continues tonight with the Spurs visiting Miami for game three.  Hugely disappointing (and perhaps costly) loss in game two at home on Sunday night.  I think they are really going to have to steal one of these two games in Miami to have a shot at winning the finals!  Again, Jimmy Kimmel pregame show airs before the broadcast…it is tradition!

Came across an interesting new show last night on TNT..Murder in the First.  It stars Taye Diggs (loved him on Private Practice, so glad to see him back on a good, entertaining show)!  He is a cop whose wife is dying of cancer and his partner is played by the cute blonde who starred in the brief reboot of Charlies Angels.  It looks very promising…airs at 10:00 pm EST on Mondays.

Enjoy your evening!

Rafael Nadal wins 9th French Open title

Rafael Nadal won his 9th French Open title defeating Novak Djokovic, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-4.  It is his fifth straight title on the red clay at Roland Garros, he is after all known as the “King of Clay”.  He has appeared somewhat vulnerable so far this clay court season on occasion and Novak seemed primed to finally win his first French Open and complete the much coveted career Grand Slam for himself.  It was not to be.  It has been a strange and unpredictable French Open this year and I am worn out from it as much as the players!  It is a grinding and grueling event, and watching it, the strange hours and all the upsets (not to mention Federer losing to Gulbis in the fourth round), well, congrats to Rafa but bring on the grass court season!

Djokovic started the match like gangbusters, breaking Rafa in the first set and winning 6-3.  The second set was up and down for both, with Rafa finally winning 7-5 and avoiding a tie break set.  The third set was all Nadal as he lifted his game and Nole seemed to suffer from health issues that had been mentioned as a factor in his semifinal four set win over Gulbis.  He threw up after the third set as he left the court to head to his chair.  So with a sour stomach he headed out for the fourth set.  Then in the fourth set, Nadal seemed to tweak his back which has been a problem for him and one thought, could Nole perhaps steal this set and force a fifth?  The answer was NO…Rafa would hoist the trophy and do his familiar celebration, taking a bite out of the trophy that has come to be known as his for most of the past decade.  With the victory, Rafa will remain at #1 in tomorrow’s rankings.  He is expected to head to Halle, Germany where he will join Roger Federer in the grass court tournament held there that is a tune up to Wimbledon.  No word on if the back is an issue and he will choose to sit out.  Djokovic, still receiving ice treatments on his forearm and wrist will rest for two weeks prior to Wimbledon.  This victory ties Rafa with Pete Sampras for Grand Slam titles (14) and moves him to within three of Roger Federer (17).  I hope he does not catch Federer (of course we know I feel that way!) and I also hope Federer can pull some magic from a bottle and win another Slam before he leaves us with only memories of the most beautiful tennis player ever (to quote John McEnroe, not just me)!  All in all, quite an accomplishment for Nadal and now I am happy to see tennis move to another surface!  (also, I feel compelled to note: Nadal’s fifth consecutive French Open; Federer won five consecutive Wimbledon titles and five consecutive US Open titles!  Hey, I had to!)

US Open Golf Championship gets underway later next week from Pinehurst, and Tiger Woods will not be there.  BUMMER!  Expect some great golf but still, no Tiger, just not quite the same.

Tonight, the Spurs host the Heat for game two of the NBA finals.  I do expect they will have that air conditioning fixed in the AT&T Center!!  GO SPURS!  (Also, Jimmy Kimmel pregame show will air before the broadcast at 7:00 pm EST)

P.S. LA Kings did beat the NY Rangers last night in double OT, 5-4 (Stanley Cup finals!)

No Triple Crown for California Chrome (it blows!)

No Triple Crown for the beautiful brown, laid back horse from southern California, California Chrome.  And excuse me, but yes, it blows and I feel robbed!  I agree with the words of one of the owners, Steve Coburn, they rest the horses, run them in one (or none) and then bring them back for the Belmont to “upset the apple cart”!  He is right, if you are going to compete in the big three, run all three or STAY HOME!  Otherwise, this is going to happen every time, just as it has for thirty six years.  We will likely never see a Triple Crown winner, certainly not in my lifetime.  And again, that just blows.  I so wanted to see Chrome get it done.  Alas, it did not happen, not even Wicked Strong could out run him however, as those two finished in a dead heat for fourth and fifth place.  Instead, in this longest of the Triple Crown races (a mile and a half), it was Tonalist winning, Commissioner in second, and Medal Count in third.  A nice word about Medal Count, run by a USC grad (that would be the University of Southern California) and named in honor of USC’s lead in athletic prowess…most overall titles of any other school.  Still, what a disappointment for those of us so hopeful, so wishful, so wanting that thrill of seeing a Triple Crown winner right before our eyes.  And no better horse to get it done with than California Chrome, owned by two working class guys who spent their savings and retirement to invest all of about $10,000. to make their dream come true.  It didn’t happen but it was glorious while it lasted and I am sad it did not happen at Belmont today!

Meanwhile, in Paris, Maria Sharapova won her second French Open title in three years, three sets over S. Halep of Romania, 6-4, 6-7. 6-4.  Really gutsy performance by the twenty two year old Halep.  I was pulling for her (since I do not ever pull for Sharapova).  Halep rose to the occasion, her first Grand Slam final and it was a match that lasted over three hours and was high quality.  Halep did much better than she did against Serena Williams in the final in Rome on clay.  Still, it was Maria hoisting the trophy and she has now won twenty clay court matches in a row.  Quite an accomplishment for someone who once described themselves as looking like a “cow on ice” when playing on clay!

Tomorrow, the men’s final…Nadal vs. Djokovic.  No surprise here..but will there be a “surprise” winner?  I am pulling for Nole to win and get his career Slam.  Nadal will be going for his ninth French Open title.  I would really like to see Djokovic win, but to be really honest, I do not want Nadal to get #14 as that puts him within three of Mr. Federer’s Grand Slam total of 17.  We all know how I feel about Roger!  Speaking of Roger…he will be in action on the grass next week in Germany (Halle) as will Nadal.  If Djokovic wins, I believe he will overtake Nadal for the #1 world ranking on Monday.  Not sure about Fed, hope he stays at least at #4, especially with Wimbledon looming on the horizon.  Speaking of rankings, S. Halep will move up from #4 to #3 in the women’s world rankings on Monday.

I am not really a huge hockey fan, but game two of the Stanley Cup finals is getting underway after the horse race.  The East vs. the West, New York vs. Los Angeles.  The Rangers vs. the Kings, with LA leading 1-0.  Guess who I am pulling for?  (LA of course!)

Later!

The Fault in Our Stars..and sports

Saw The Fault in Our Stars today…bring Kleenex!  I had tissues and yes, I did use them.  Really poignant, touching, bittersweet story, so terribly sad but also so uplifting.  The love that these families had for their cancer stricken children and the love between the two young people, both terminal, well it was a beautiful thing.  Many of you may have read the book and know the story.  So many great moments and messages in the movie and the story.  One that resonated with me…We do not get to choose if we get hurt in the world, but we do get to choose who we get hurt by.  (Maybe not verbatim but you get the picture)  I enjoyed it, even though I was warned at the box office that I would be in a theater full of crying teenage girls.  There was a mixed crowd, and many cried.

OK..moving on to sports news…it was HOT in the AT & T Center in San Antonio, Texas last night where the Spurs hosted the defending champion Heat (hey, like the metaphor) in game one of the NBA Finals.  The A/C was broken…oh, the irony!  Anyhow, the Spurs were not broken and were hot…winning 110-95.  Tim Duncan (seeking his fifth title in his seventeen year career) scored 21 points with 10 rebounds.  Tony Parker played (injured ankle) and looked just fine as did Ginobili (16 points).  LeBron suffered cramps late in the fourth period after a layup and had to watch the closing minutes from the bench.  I kind of like the new format this year, 2-2-1-1-1.  So, the next game will be Sunday evening in San Antonio (expect the A/C to be working by then) and then the series will head to Miami for two games.  Really hope the Spurs can get it done this year!

Speaking of hot…it was hot in Paris today as well.  Novak Djokovic survived E. Gulbis in four sets, 6-3, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.  Nole had a brief dip in the third, said after the match he felt a bit light headed but overcame his fatigue and rolled through in four sets.  Andy Murray looked like his legs were not moving and Nadal rolled over him in three straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, 6-1.  The match lasted a mere hour and forty minutes, not what we are used to when these two match up.  Murray may have been feeling the effects of that marathon match he had with Kolshreiber which lasted two days with Andy winning in the fifth set, 12-10.  Never the less, I think Nadal vs. Djokovic is the final we were all expecting.

Have a great Friday night!

Sharapova and Halep into French Open finals..more!

Well, sort of what we expected after all the upsets…Sharapova and S. Halep advance today and will meet in the final of the French Open.  Given the early exits of Serena Williams, Li Na, A. Radwanska (not to mention V. Azarenka sitting out still trying to heal her hurt foot), this seemed like the matchup we would expect!  Sharapova won in three sets (she has now won 10 consecutive three set matches) over Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.  Amazing how when it goes three…the third set is a blowout!  Bouchard, age twenty, had her chances, but too many unforced errors and losing two sets on her serve when up 40-0, well, that is not going to get you into the final of a Major.  Still, a great tournament for the up and coming super star from Canada.  Gotta say, I still like M. Raonic even more, also from Canada, also on the way up (#8) and such a nice, really genuine young man.  OK, the other women’s semifinal featured #4 S. Halep vs. A. Petkovic of Germany.  Petkovic has suffered from and come back from so many injuries it is impossible to keep a tab on them.  At one point, she even thought about quitting the sport.  Glad she did not as she is delightful, talented, very athletic, but still needs a little bit of work on her game.  Halep won the first set with ease, 6-2, and then battled her way to a second set tie break win, 7-6 and will face Sharapova in the final.  She most recently faced off against Serena Williams in the final in Rome and did not fare so well.  Something tells me her final against Maria on Saturday will be a different story!  Hope Halep gets it done and wins her first Major!

Tomorrow, the men’s semifinals..Nadal vs. Murray (it could last hours if history is any indication) and Djokovic vs. Gulbis (who has backed up that five set victory over Federer, darn!) and looks poised to really make a move!  Still, when all is said and done…expect to see Nadal and Djokovic in the Sunday final.

Now, I feel compelled to mention that once we get through this clay court action in Paris, we will move to the grass…starting in Halle, Germany on Monday 6/9 where both Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will be in action (looking forward to the return of Mr. Federer and yes, grass is a good surface for Roger!).

Next, it is time to look at the NBA finals.  They finally get underway tonight with a “rematch” from last year’s finals..the Heat vs. the Spurs.  The Heat are looking to “three peat” (please, NO!) and the Spurs would like to win another title before some of the oldie but goldies, ie., Tim Duncan call it a day.  The Spurs could have and should have (for all of you who watched last year’s finals) won the series in game six.  They did not and the Heat went on to win in game seven.  Looking forward to this series…hope the Spurs can get it done.  Let’s go Spurs!!  Would certainly be remiss not to mention one of the highlights of the NBA finals…the Jimmy Kimmel pregame show.  It airs every night a half hour before game time!  Be there or be square!

Can California Chrome get it done this weekend in NY at the Belmont?  Can he become the first triple crown winner since 1978?  Let’s go with YES…dreams can and do come true!  Stay tuned…there is a lot going on between now and the end of the weekend!

Also, a really interesting movie comes out on Friday (6/6)…The Fault in our Stars!  It is based on a wonderful book (0f course) and I do plan to try and see it!  Will let you know what I think…do I ever fail to do that?

All right! All right! All right!  Have a wonderful night!

Wednesday winners and losers (French Open)

Play continued on Wednesday in Paris at the French Open once the rain subsided…winners and losers were pretty much as expected.  Nadal wore down David Ferrer, dropping the first set, 4-6 buy then pouring it on his fellow countryman, 6-4, 6-0, 6-1.  Always wonder when someone gets bageled this deep in the tournament?  Anyhow, no surprise as this is Rafa’s place.  Still not pulling for him to win..he would reach Grand Slam number 14, tie Pete Sampras and get too close for comfort to Roger Federer’s 17.  Hey, I am all about Roger, what can I say?  In the other men’s quarterfinal, Andy Murray survived a comeback from the entertaining but underachieving G. Monfils of France in five sets, 6-4, 6-1, 4-6. 1-6 (that is eerily odd) and then 6-0.  Again, that bagel set..in a quarterfinal at a Major?  Disappointing for the French crowd and Monfils.  He is so talented but does not seem to ever really live up to his true potential.  Meanwhile, Andy looks healthy and will face Nadal in the semifinals.  Djokovic will face Gulbis (that guy who upset Fed in five sets but looks like he is a serious contender), but likely not going to beat Nole!

On the women’s side..so HAPPY to see Andrea Petkovic advance in straight sets over S. Errani  6-2, 6-2.  She is delightful, and talented, and has come back from a rash of injuries so as of right now..I am pulling for her.  She will face #4 S. Halep who defeated Kuznetsova, 6-2, 6-2.  How about that..identical scores in today’s women’s quarters.  Maria Sharapova, the favorite ( but not my favorite) will face #18 Eugenie Bouchard of Canada.  Bouchard is a real up and comer, but has a bit of that same personality as Sharapova, all business and not a warm and fuzzy kind of gal.  There is nothing wrong with being good, even great, and being nice and friendly with your competitors, is there?  Again, look at Mr. Federer!  OK, prediction time…definitely think it will be Nadal vs. Djokovic and hope Nole gets his first French Open title when all is said and done.  On the women’s side…just don’t know.  I am pulling for Petkovic, then Halep, then Bouchard, and last, Sharapova.

Now, it is Wednesday!  Motive is on ABC tonight at 10:00 pm EST!  Watch it, you will love it!  Also, please check out my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.  Follow a southern woman who relocates to a new town full of great expectations – only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances.  Try it, I think you will love it!  Check out the Home page on the website and the Buy the Book option on the menu toolbar!  Thanks and have a great rest of your Wednesday!Surviving Paradise
