One Swiss guy into the semifinals at ATP year end finals!

One Swiss guy has secured a place in the semifinals at the ATP Year End Finals in London and his name is not Roger Federer, it is Stan Wawrinka.  Wawrinka took out David Ferrer 6 – 7, 6 – 4, 6 – 1.  He then had to await the result of the Berdych – Nadal match.  Should Berdych win, he would advance instead of Wawrinka.  Good news for Stan, Nadal took care of Berdych in three sets, 6 – 4, 1 – 6, 6 – 3.  Hard to explain that second set with Nadal only winning one game.  Anyhow…that means Stan Wawrinka will make the semifinals in his first ever appearance at the year end final event in London.  Great moment for him.  Speaking of that other Swiss guy…the one with 17 Grand Slam titles…Roger Federer, well he needs to defeat J. Martin Del Potro tomorrow to advance as well.  That match will air live on Tennis Channel at 9:00 am EST.  I hope Roger can get it done!!  Whoever wins the match tomorrow will advance into the semifinals to join Nadal, Djokovic and Wawrinka.  Federer defeated Del Potro in Paris last week after falling to him in the final of the Swiss Indoor Tournament the week prior.  Should be a great match and I am really pulling for Roger to find his way through into the final rounds!

Meanwhile, college basketball is happening, the NBA is back (Kobe Bryant has not returned to play yet with the Lakers  although they did defeat Dwight Howard and the Houston Rockets last night!), and Tiger Woods is playing golf in Turkey.  He shot a round of 63 yesterday, 9 birdies and no bogeys to finish up at -11, one off the lead.

College football tomorrow, Gameday live from Tuscaloosa.  I am going to be honest, I will be watching the tennis match!  I love my football, but I love Roger Federer more.

Almost forgot, finally watched The Internship on demand the other night!  Funny movie, beautiful scenery in the San Francisco area, and so great to see the hilarity of the Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson pairing.  Nice message in the movie amidst all the humor, don’t give up on your dreams no matter what stage you are at in life, and the importance of teamwork.  Now, if I can get myself to the theater to catch a good movie in the next few days, I will share my thoughts with you on it!

OK guys, enjoy your Friday night!

And down go the Ducks in Palo Alto!

Oh my!  Now things are going to get really interesting in the world of college football and the BCS national title picture!  Last night, 3 Oregon fell to 5 Stanford in Palo Alto, 26 – 20.  Stanford dominated this game in every sense of the word.  The Quack Attack made a last ditch comeback in the 4th quarter which fell short; but the truth of this game was Stanford knows how to stop the Ducks!  For the second year in a row, Oregon has lost the chance to play for the national title (most likely) at the hands of the Cardinals.  Stanford played like Stanford, tough, physical, pounding running game with smart passing sprinkled in for good measure and excellent, assignment defense.  This was the Stanford team that I thought had a great shot at winning the title this year before that horrific performance against Utah which has cost them that opportunity (again, most likely as things are muddied and will only sort themselves out throughout the month of November!)  Oregon did not play their best football again (Stanford seems to just know how to stop the Quack Attack).  Numerous mistakes and turnovers, not the least of which was the fumble by DAT (DeAnthony Thomas) inside the five yard line (was it a fumble?) along with a bit of a passive performance.  Granted, things got interesting when Oregon finally scored, blocked a punt and returned it for a TD, then recovered an onside kick and went in for another TD.  All this with the fourth quarter more than half way over.  The next onside kick was recovered by Stanford and that was the ball game.  The great beneficiary of this result, for now, FSU.  As the sign said in the Stanford student section, “You are welcome FSU”!  By the way, John Elway was honored at halftime with his number 7 jersey retired.  (To add insult to injury, no pun intended, Oregon QB Marcus Mariota has a partial MCL sprain and thus the brace on his left knee).

6 Baylor continues to surge into the BCS national picture with a pounding of 10 Oklahoma, 41 – 12.  They will play at least three ranked teams on their remaining schedule so watch out for the Baylor Bears.  They are coming…..Meanwhile, 1 Alabama will host 13 LSU on Saturday night.  Will LSU give them a really touch test, perhaps win, or will Bama prove they are indeed the best team in college football?  (I think Stanford is the Alabama of the west coast).  FSU has a relatively easy remaining schedule, never know what will happen when they face the injured Florida Gators, but they seem like the team most likely to stay unbeaten.  But, as we all know, on any given day (or night)…

So, with Ohio State undefeated and an easy schedule, FSU looking to finish out undefeated, Alabama with a tougher schedule looking to go undefeated, and Baylor with a tougher schedule than FSU and Ohio State looking to go undefeated, things are still in play!  Now, should we get into a situation where the BCS will come down to selecting a one loss team, Stanford could re-emerge into the picture.  I truly believe Stanford is capable of beating anyone in the country.  Really a shame for Oregon, second year in a row their hopes and dreams of playing again in the title game go down to Stanford.  I do expect the Ducks to run the table as far as the remaining games on their schedule.

So, after this weekend, the picture will change, but not be clear.  What do you guys say?  Who is going to end the year at #1 and #2?  Right now, I do not know.  How does FSU vs. Ohio State sound?  Not so good to me!

Nadal secures #1, Fed wins today, CFB and of course, Surviving “Paradise”

It is Thursday and I am a day late (and unfortunately a dollar short always)!  Wednesday is the day I promote my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver, but this week, it is on Thursday.  So first things first, please check out my book Surviving “Paradise” at Amazon.com for $8.99 in paperback, $4.99 kindle edition and also $4.99 at Barnes and Noble nook.  There is now a special deal at Amazon where if you buy the paperback, you get a kindle edition for $1.99!  This story is entertaining and full of ridiculous drama and comedy.  Follow a southern woman who relocates to a new town in southwest Florida only to encounter neighborhood mayhem extraordinaire.  It will make you laugh and relate to what can only be described as a crazy and bumpy ride through the perils of finding oneself in the wrong place at the wrong time in Sarasota, FL!

OK, now to sports!  Rafael Nadal secured the year end #1 ranking in tennis yesterday with a hard fought victory over Stan Wawrinka, 7 – 5, 7 – 5.  It was a heartbreaking loss for Stan but what a story for Rafa.  Out of tennis for almost nine months rehabbing his injured knees only to return to arguably the best year of his career.  Congrats to Rafa from a devoted Roger Federer fan!  Berdych defeated David Ferrer in two sets yesterday as well.  Today, Roger Federer prevailed over Richard Gasquet, 6 – 4, 6 – 3.  It was a dominating performance by Fed, yet one that was also symbolic of the rocky year he has had this year.  He won, but he also wobbled on some important points.  He is still capable of the brilliance that has made so many of us fall in love with Roger Federer the player (and the person) but he also showed the lack of confidence in some important moments closing out the match that have plagued him all year long.  In his own words, “it has been a difficult year for sure, I have felt rattled at times”.  Well, Roger, we all know what that is like.  Who among us has not felt rattled and unsure as we navigate our way through changing times and circumstances.  Still, this man who has brought us moments in tennis that will never be equaled continues to fight his way through these times and show the emotion and frustration of someone who deeply cares and wants to regain his form and game and win another title.  You go Roger…we will NEVER give up on you.  I believe he will win another title, hopefully a Grand Slam title in 2014.  For now, this win means Roger is not out of the ATP Year End Championships.  He will have a very important match up with Del Potro on Saturday.  If he wins, he likely will advance from Group B to the semifinals.  Today, Novak Djokovic is facing off against Del Potro and has taken the first set, 6 – 3.  What happens in this match is certainly going to effect the semifinals.  That being said,  Federer must win on Saturday!  Coverage of this final tennis event of the year is moving back and forth between Tennis Channel and ESPN2, depending on college football.  So check yourbook_cover_c_rev1ed local listings.  I believe Federer vs. Del Potro on Saturday will be on Tennis Channel.

Speaking of college football, monster game tonight on ESPN, 3 Oregon at 5 Stanford.  Oregon must win out to secure a spot in the BCS title game.  2 FSU has a pretty easy road ahead of them.  1 Alabama has a very tough schedule ahead, not the least of which will be on display on Saturday night on ABC when 13 LSU visits Tuscaloosa.  Also on tonight, 6 Baylor (maybe the most underrated team in the country?) will face 10 Oklahoma.  Great night of college football in store for tonight.

Back later with final results of Del Potro vs. Djokovic!  Update:  Del Potro takes the second set 6 -3 so it is going three!  Final, Djokovic over Del Potro, 6 – 3, 3 – 6, 6 – 3.  Djokovic guarantees himself a spot in the semifinals and that Federer vs. Del Potro match on Saturday will determine who advances along with him!  GO FED!

Federer falls to Djokovic in London, dadgumit!

Once again, dadgumit (to quote FSU former head coach Bobby Bowden!),  Roger Federer fell to Novak Djokovic in his first match in the round robin format in London at the ATP Year End Tennis Final, 4 – 6, 7 – 6, 2- 6.  I had such high hope after Fed secured the second set in a tie break!  Anyhow..he will play again on Thursday and hopefully, he can secure two victories since the top two finishers in both the A and B brackets advance.  Rafael Nadal avenged his loss in Paris to countryman David Ferrer with a two set victory, 6 – 3, 6- 2 (more like what we have experienced in this match up) and with one more win, he will secure the #1 ranking for this year.  Djokovic is hoping Nadal falters and he can secure the #1 year end ranking.  All I care about is Roger Federer winning a couple of matches and getting himself ready for 2014!  So there you have it, I am all about Roger Federer!

Last night’s MNF game between the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers was a good one with the Bears winning 27 – 20.  Chicago was playing without Jay Cutler, starting QB and Green Bay suffered a huge loss in the first quarter when QB Aaron Rodgers went out with a shoulder injury.  Latest report is that Rodgers suffered a fractured collarbone and will miss at least three weeks.

Moving to College Football, my youngest daughter (FSU grad) and I are in a debate over the BCS rankings.  I think Oregon is being disrespected, in fact I think the Pac 12 in general is being disrespected.  She is of course all about FSU.  Alabama has the toughest schedule, but I no longer buy into the SEC is King philosophy.  I think they play some really good football on the west coast.  We will find out a lot about Oregon on Thursday night when they play at Stanford.  As much as I love Stanford, they are not the team they were last year with Andrew Luck.  Still, FSU has beaten then #3 Clemson and then #7 Miami.  I am not sure about Clemson.  Miami was overrated, as much as I hate to admit it since they embarrassed Georgia Tech.  But that was not the 7th best team in the country.  Perhaps the most underrated team, Baylor.  When we get to a playoff format next year, these issues will maybe resolve themselves.  This year, with Ohio State likely going undefeated, we are probably going to wind up as always with someone on the outside looking in.  The question to be answered in the weeks ahead, who will be on the inside playing for the National Title and who will be left out?

Moving to Pop Culture…anybody else out there watching the new ABC drama Betrayal on Sunday nights at 10:00 pm EST with Stuart Townsend and James Cromwell?  This show is tantalizing and next week it is going to explode!  Going to be interesting to see how this compelling drama unfolds and how long it can hold one’s attention!

Latest BCS Poll and “dadgumit” FSU leapfrogs Oregon

Well, the BCS Poll came out last night and to quote FSU legendary and beloved former head coach Bobby Bowden, “Dadgumit”  Sorry Seminole fans but I do not think it is fair.  Why was Oregon penalized for not playing, by the way they have a monster game coming up this Thursday night at 5 Stanford?  Moreover, Alabama was resting this past weekend as well and no penalty there.  Granted, FSU was impressive in their victory over the then ranked 7 Miami Hurricanes, (over ranked for sure!) but it was only in the second half that they dominated and they were at home.  This does not mean that when all the dust settles, FSU will not indeed have earned the right to play for the BCS title.  Just think that once again disrespect shown to Oregon and the strength of the Pac 12.  So, now that I have that off my chest…here is the current new BCS top ten:

1 Alabama, 2 FSU, 3 Oregon (dadgumit!), 4 Ohio State, 5 Stanford (thank you) 6 Baylor (perhaps underrated?), 7 Clemson (not sure on this one?), 8 Missouri, 9 Auburn (that Iron Bowl game with Bama is gonna be special!) and 10 Oklahoma.

So, some things will begin to ebb and flow after this week/weekend.  3 Oregon will play at 5 Stanford on Thursday night (9:00 pm EST on ESPN).  Also, 10 Oklahoma will face off against 6 Baylor.  There should be a whole lot of scoring in that one!  And finally, Saturday night on ABC at 8:00 pm EST, LSU will face 1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa.  That is also where we will find College Gameday this coming Saturday.

So in the end…winning will take care of it all perhaps?  I do not think all three of these teams arrive at the end of the season (conference championship games included) undefeated.  FSU has the easiest road ahead, only a injured and likely angry Florida team at the end of the season and then perhaps Miami (without RB Duke Johnson, broken ankle) or Virginia Tech in the ACC Championship game.  Alabama has 13 LSU and 9 Auburn and then possibly 8 Missouri or 12 South Carolina in the SEC Championship game.  Bama has a very tough road ahead.  3 Oregon has 5 Stanford, a very tricky game on the road against Arizona, their rivalry game with Oregon State, and a potential rematch with 19 UCLA  if they win out and play in the Pac 12 Championship game.   Alabama and Oregon have the tougher roads ahead of them so FSU can just continue to play and impress.  But, if Oregon and Alabama do continue on and win out, I believe that is who we will see in the BCS title game.  So ….we shall continue to wait and see.

Moving to tennis…ATP Year End Final gets underway today in London.  Wawrinka took out Berdych (let’s hear it for Stan the man!)  ESPN.com has confusing info on their site…have both Del Potro facing Gasquet today and Federer facing Gasquet today as well.  Sounds like an impossible task for Richard Gasquet to me.  I believe that Mr. Federer will not play until tomorrow.  If I am correct, he will face Novak Djokovic in the last match of the day…come one Roger…beat him this time!

Until later…

3 FSU rolls over 7 Miami and other college football news

Two big games in the “sunshine” state yesterday.  One earlier in the day, UGA over Florida, 23 – 20.  Very chippy game, those two teams just do not get along!  The big one was last night in Tallahassee and these teams historically do not get along and have played some wonderfully exciting and competitive games over the years.  Last night was no exception in the first half, but by the time the third quarter was well under way, it was game over…Noles on the way to a huge victory.  Guess we can now all understand that 22 point spread…FSU 41 – Miami 14.  Both of Miami’s touchdowns were the result of interceptions thrown by young FSU QB sensation “Famous Jameis” but he did not let it get to him and came back out in the second half to lead the Noles to a thorough thrashing of the then 7th ranked Hurricanes.  Things got a little chippy, but paled in comparison to the game down Interstate 10 in the other direction earlier in the day.  Really bad news for Miami, RB Duke Johnson left with an injured ankle in a cast and may be lost for the rest of the season.  Have to think there is a strong possibility these two teams will meet again in the ACC Championship game.  Miami plays Virginia Tech next weekend and the Hokies dropped another yesterday to Boston College (35 – 27) so would look to favor the Hurricanes in that game.  Still, one never knows.  The big games ahead as far as FSU and BCS implications are concerned will be taking place this week/weekend.  Thursday night, 2 Oregon visits 5 Stanford (now 6)  and Saturday 1 Alabama hosts 10 LSU.  Also, think the Iron Bowl (Bama vs. now 7 Auburn) is going to be a war!

Meanwhile in Atlanta, Georgia Tech overcame a couple of bad fumbles, a dropped pass right in the receiver’s hands to prevail over Pittsburgh, 21 – 10.  Very nice homecoming victory for the Jackets.  And, WR Smelter did redeem himself with an extraordinary catch later in the game over two Pitt defenders which led to the TD that sealed the deal for the Jackets.  Robert Godhigh was a stud (all 5′ 7″ of him!) scoring two rushing touchdowns!  Good to get out of that game with a win as the Pitt passing attack took off in the second half.

Latest AP and Coaches Polls are out (BCS to follow tonight).

AP Poll: 1 Alabama (52), 2 Oregon (2), 3 FSU (6), 4 Ohio State, 5 Baylor, 6 Stanford, 7 Auburn, 8 Clemson, 9 Missouri, and 10 LSU.

Coaches Poll: 1 Alabama (54), 2 Oregon (5), 3 FSU (3), 4 Ohio State, 5 Baylor, 6 Stanford, 7 Clemson, 8 Oklahoma, 9 Missouri, and 10 Auburn.

Baylor passes Stanford in both polls (?) and little bit of difference in 7 thru 10 between the two polls.  Duke got one vote in the AP Poll!  Way to go Dukies!

Tennis news:  Novak Djokovic prevented David Ferrer from becoming the first man to repeat as champion of the Paris Masters 1000, winning 7 – 5, 7 – 5.  Ferrer had a chance to serve for the second set but failed to do so and Novak took control to win the match.  Off to London now for the ATP Year End from the O2 arena!

A surprise in Paris (tennis)!

A surprise in Paris in the semifinals of the 1000 Masters event (although alas, not the surprise I was wanting!).  World number 1 Rafael Nadal fell to countryman and good buddy David Ferrer, 6 – 3, 7 – 5.  Not only surprising outcome, but it did not even go three sets.  Ferrer is the defending champion of this event and noone has ever repeated as champion.  He will get the chance tomorrow against world number 2 Novak Djokovic who defeated Roger Federer in three sets, 4 – 6, 6 – 3, 6 – 2.  Sigh….I had such hope this morning as I watched Fed take the first set.  It was a close and hard fought three set match but Djokovic seemed to get momentum midway through the second set and Roger began to make too many unforced errors by the arrival of the third and deciding set.  Also, Fed could not get enough points off his second serve as the match went on.  All in all a good week for Roger, however.  He secures a place in the year end final next week in London, made the semifinals of this event, earns points, and will get a little more rest before next week’s action begins.  So, tomorrow Djokovic vs. Ferrer in the final.  As a side note:  Del Potro who fell to Federer in three sets yesterday was robbed at the train station in Paris as he was getting ready to travel to London for next week’s event.  He turned to oblige an autograph request, and his bags were stolen, turned around for twenty seconds and they were gone!  What a world we live in.  He lost his passport, wallet, clothes, and a rosary that had special meaning to him.  It was a gift from the Pope who he had the opportunity to meet earlier this year.

As for the London groupings:  Group A will be Nadal, Ferrer, Berdych and Wawrinka.  Group B will be Djokovic, Del Potro, Federer and Gasquet.

College Football action well underway.  UGA and Florida are partying, excuse me, I meant playing in Jacksonville and the Dawgs are up 14 – 0 in the first quarter.  Very chippy atmosphere from the outset.

14 South Carolina had little trouble with Miss State today and Virginia Tech lost their second game in a row, falling to Boston College, 34 – 27.  My oh my, what is happening to the Hokies?  Later…3FSU vs. 7 Miami.  Also, GT hosts Pittsburgh in Atlanta.

Until later…

Not exactly a jam packed weekend of college football coming up…

A little bit of a lull has descended on the world of college football this weekend.  Many top ten teams are off…Alabama, Oregon, Stanford, Baylor, and Oklahoma.  The biggest matchup is taking place in Tallahassee between 3 FSU and 7 Miami.  This rivalry has a long and storied history, a colorful one that has been known and remembered with joy and heartbreak (depending on which team you may pull for) by the terms…”wide left” and/or “wide right”.  FSU was the unfortunate team on the wrong end of those ill fated field goals.  But, to be fair, FSU has had their share of exciting wins over Miami teams in years past.  It is a bit shocking that the Noles are a 22 point favorite, given the lofty ranking currently enjoyed by the Hurricanes.  Incidentally, in case anyone was not aware of it, there is this other game going on this weekend in the state of Florida, over in Jacksonville (spent a year in Jax myself) known as the largest outdoor cocktail party in the world.  That only means one thing, Florida vs. UGA.  Ironically, both teams are currently unranked, and the bigger game is down Interstate 10 in the other direction, between two ACC schools.  This weekend, ACC matchup outweighs the significance of the SEC matchup.  In Atlanta, Georgia Tech will host Pittsburgh for its homecoming game.  Hopefully the Jackets can continue with their winning ways as they seem to have gotten back on track after a rough patch!

In tennis news, ROGER THAT!  Yes, Roger Federer is into the semifinals at the Paris Masters 1ooo event after defeating Del Potro today, 6-3, 4-6,6-3.  Finally, as Fed has lost the past two matches to Del Potro and they were both on indoor hard courts.  You could see the jubilation in Federer’s eyes with this win.  He had a slight wobble in the latter stages of the second set which resulted in the match going the distance.  They exchanged breaks in the third, then Fed broke again and that was all she wrote.  Federer has looked the best he has looked all year in Paris and today had 36 winners to 22 unforced errors.  He also enjoyed an incredibly high percentage of points won on both his first serve and his second.  He will face Novak Djokovic tomorrow (Nole defeated the other Swiss, Wawrinka, 6-1, 6-4).  Rafael Nadal took care of Richard Gasquet 6-4,6-1 and will play the winner of the Berdych vs. Ferrer match, currently in progress.  Update: The energizer bunny, David Ferrer comes from one set down to defeat Berdych.  He will face fellow Spaniard Nadal tomorrow.  Ferrer is the defending champion of this event, but I do expect Nadal to advance to the final!

So, aside from mentioning the tragic events that took place earlier today at LAX, one TSA agent apparently killed, another injured and numerous other people hit by gunfire…what a world, uh?  it is over an out for now.  I will update on the Berdych vs. Ferrer match when complete.

Have a good one!

Oh yes, I think I forgot to congratulate the Boston Red Sox, their city, their fans, and my buddy Ronnie on their third World Series title in the past ten years.  What a team performance, from last to first!  Also, after watching Jennifer Garner on Jimmy Kimmel a few nights ago talk about hubby Ben Affleck and his Red Sox obsession, I thought I would start a new twitter hash tag…#howhappyisbenaffleck!

GT falls to UGA in 2 OT, Iron Bowl was amazing (Auburn over Bama!)

Oh my…I am still recovering.  Yes, I was there…at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Grant Field in hopes of seeing Georgia Tech finally beat UGA for the first time since 2008.  Starting QB Aaron Murray was out and back up freshman Mason was in.  Georgia Tech was up 20 -0 and the place was rocking in the first half (and so was I!).  Then Mason began to get his”sea legs” and the dawgs drove down the field as the second half wound down to score a TD.  20 – 7 GT at the half with UGA getting the ball to start the 3rd quarter.  Once again, down the field they went, Gurley (RB) getting stronger but the Jackets defense stopped them and they had to settle for a field goal…20 – 10.  Jackets offense drives and sputters…UGA drives and scores again…20 – 17.  Then GT comes back to life on offense and scores a TD and a field goal to take a 10 point lead.  The music is playing, the crowd and the players (myself included) are dancing…then UGA scores 10 points to tie the game.  GT has one last gasp and drives down the filed only to face a 4th and long inside the 50 yard line.  Everyone is expecting CPJ to go for it, after all that is what he does????  But no, play it safe, short punt and nails UGA on their own 2 yard line with only seconds remaining.  So, OT here we come.  First OT, UGA wins toss and elects to go on defense.  GT scores.  Then UGA scores with relative ease.  Second OT and GT has the choice and elects to go on Defense???? Really, are you kidding me?  The defense has just come off the field and UGA scored with relative ease.  WHY NOT GO ON OFFENSE?????? Alas, they did not, Gurley pounded them and UGA scored.  Then the Jackets get their turn…and it is fourth and goal…and the pass goes up into the air with multiple touches, (no Auburn miracle here) and ultimately falls to the ground as do I…UGA 41 – GT 34.  It had all looked so promising in the first half.  GT out gained UGA, they controlled the time of possession but they really did not get enough pressure on the young UGA QB…never mind GT defensive end Attaochu extraordinaire was being held the entire game.  Apparently they were not calling “holding” on this night.  What a sad and horrible defeat for the Jackets who appeared on their way to a victory over their rivals.  It was not to be….we are not lucky…but I will tell you who is…AUBURN!GTUGAPhoto2013

The Iron Bowl…which I of course had to DVR as I was at the GT-UGA game was something special.  How can you really be that lucky, not just once (against UGA) but against #1 Bama as well?  Well, you have to be good to be lucky and Auburn was.  Yeldon ran what appeared to be the game winning TD but no..he stepped out of bounds. Few seconds left on the clock and Alabama is going for the game winning field goal..only they miss and an Auburn player gathers it in in the endzone and runs it back 109 yards with no time left on the clock for the miraculous win…34 – 28.  WOW!  (You have all seen this replay on ESPN Sportscenter!) Auburn will now represent the SEC West in Atlanta for the SEC Championship game.  They will face the SEC East Winner, Missouri who defeated Johnny Manziel and Texas A & M, 28 – 21.  Way to go Mizz!  Only two years into the SEC and you are playing for the championship.  So Auburn vs. Missouri for the SEC next weekend.

Meanwhile, in Gainesville, Florida, FSU had little trouble with the depleted and wounded Gators, winning 37 – 7 inspite of a slow start.  They will face Duke (yes, Duke!) in the ACC Championship game as the Dukies kicked a game winning field goal as time was running out to defeat North Carolina, 27 – 25.  Ohio State prevailed over rival Michigan, thanks in part to a brave decision by Brady Hoke and the Wolverines to go for two points after scoring with time expiring.  It failed and Ohio State remains undefeated and will now face Michigan State for the Big 10 Championship and perhaps a trip to Pasadena for the National Title game.  By the way, things got a bit ugly as three players were ejected in a “brawl”.  South Carolina took care of Clemson with ease, 31 – 17 as the “ole ball coach” and the Gamecocks let the visiting Tigers know…not so fast, not happening here!  Pac 12 action saw UCLA defeat USC, 35 – 14.  Second year in a row the Jim Mora coached Bruins have defeated the Trojans.  Arizona State took care of in state rival Arizona, 51 – 21 and will face Stanford (winner over Notre Dame, 27 – 20) for the Pac 12 Championship and most likely a trip to the Rose Bowl.  Very disappointed that neither Stanford or Oregon could avoid those two losses and be one of the teams poised to play in the National Title game.  I wanted to see a west coast team in the title game in this last year of the “BCS”.

So the AP and Coaches Polls are out (BCS out later tonight but do not expect any difference as far as the top three/four).

AP Poll: 1 FSU (58) and first time since 2000, 2 Ohio State, 3 Auburn (2), 4 Alabama, 5 Missouri, 6 Oklahoma State, 7 Stanford, 8  South Carolina, 9 Baylor, and 10 Michigan State.

Coaches Poll: 1 FSU (58), 2 Ohio State (4) some love for the the Buckeyes in the Coaches Poll!, 3 Auburn, 4 Alabama, 5 Missouri, 6 Oklahoma State, 7 South Carolina, 7 Baylor (its a tie!), 9 Michigan State, and 10 Stanford.

Few discrepancies…more love shown to Stanford in the AP than the Coaches.  South Carolina ranked a bit higher in Coaches but tied with Baylor…anyhow…one more week to go before the final decision is in.  Meanwhile, Duke comes in at #20 in both polls…who would have thought it?

Later this afternoon, Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos visit the Kansas City Chiefs.  Battle for the division title?  Go Peyton and the Broncos!

Gee…what a Saturday of CFB people!!!
