French Open preview!

Here it is as promised…my French Open preview.  The second Grand Slam tournament of 2014 gets underway tomorrow from Roland Garros.  So, is Rafael Nadal still the overwhelming favorite on his beloved red clay?  I think no…not the overwhelming favorite by any measure but certainly still the favorite or at least the co-favorite along with world number two Novak Djokovic.  Rafa has looked vulnerable since the start of the tennis season this year, even on clay!  Think back to Madrid when Kei Nishikori had him on the ropes until succumbing to his body breaking down and being forced to retire.  Also, Djokovic defeated him in the final in Rome, even after dropping the first set (which by the way has never happened in the history of these two players, if Rafa wins the first set against Nole in the past, he won the match!).  So, Nadal and Djokovic are the co-favorites and I could feel pretty comfortable going “out on a limb” so to speak and saying that if the final is between these two (#1 and #2), I will predict Novak Djokovic wins his first French Open and completes the career Grand Slam.  BUT…slow down people…we are now talking about five set matches, “Big Boy” tennis here so Rafa could get it done for sure.  And then there are others…starting with world #3 Stan Wawrinka.  Stan has been a bit up and down since winning his first Grand Slam title in Australia.  Still, Stan has the game to beat both Rafa and Djokovic (oh yes, he did that down under) and is a real threat to pull the “upset” in Paris if he is at his best.  And then there is my guy, the GOAT, Mr. Roger Federer, now a father of four (two twin girls, two newly born twin boys).  Roger came back from paternity leave in Rome after missing Madrid and looked rusty losing to J. Chardy in his first match.  But Fed has had a really great 2014 after a dismal 2013 (at least by his immeasurable standards).  Roger won Dubai, reached the final at Brisbane and lost to Hewitt, lost in the quarters down under (disappointing) and has also played in two other Masters 1000 finals, Indian Wells, losing to Nole in three sets (third set tiebreaker) and in Monte Carlo to good buddy Stan Wawrinka (think the emotion got the better of him).  So, of course Federer is always in the conversation to take the title if things fall right for him in the draw.  People often forget that Roger Federer has been the second best clay court player in the world for a decade…losing five finals to none other than the King of Clay, Rafa and winning his one French Open title in 2009 when Robin Soderling did him the grand favor of defeating Nadal.  Andy Murray remains a question mark, he has looked very shaky after his back surgery and is currently searching for a new coach after parting ways with Ivan Lendl.  Still, Murray when on his game is likely to be in the mix, at least into the quarters and perhaps the semifinals.  David Ferrer is like the energizer bunny and just keeps on coming and like his fellow Spaniard, Nadal, is a clay court specialist.  Kei Nishikori, if healthy enough, could be a real threat to unsettle the presumed natural order of things atop the men’s tennis hierarchy.  Up and comers, G. Dimitrov and M. Raonic could factor in as well along with Thomas Berdych who if things go according to plan would face Federer in the quarters.

On the women’s side..we start with the favorite, world number one Serena Williams.  If she is healthy and on her game she wins.  Both Li Na (#2) and A. Radwanska (#3) will test her along with Maria Sharapova who has been very up and down but looked very good in Rome until losing to Ana Ivanovic.  Ana is poised to move back into the top ten and is playing some very good tennis.  Victoria Azarenka will be MIA again due to her foot injury (bummer, no Redfoo in the house at Roland Garros) so some of the young players will get a shot at upsetting the apple cart.  S. Halep of Romania (currently ranked #4) is a threat and Eugenie Bouchard of Canada is the new “darling” of the women’s tennis world.  Still when all is said and done, Serena remains the clear favorite on the women’s side…but we all know anything can happen at a Grand Slam.

Looking forward to a great two weeks of tennis which will begin live on Tennis Channel tomorrow.  Great way to kick back and enjoy Memorial Day weekend if you are not enjoying a wonderful trip!

Tonight, the Heat and the Pacers face off in game three of the Eastern Conference finals.  The game is in Miami and the series is tied 1-1, advantage Heat.  Pacers lost a close one in Indy, should not have let that happen!  Paul George was diagnosed with a concussion after game two but word is he has been cleared to play tonight.  One hopes he really is “cleared” to play with all the controversy in the sporting world over proper handling of concussions.  That being said, the Pacers need him and cannot and will not win without him.

Moving to Pop Culture, saw the new movie Blended with Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler.  This is their third collaboration, the first one…The Wedding Singer!  It was cute, Drew is so full of sunshine and Adam is always hilarious so let the critics say what they want, I found it a great “feel good movie” to see and kick off the holiday weekend!

Until tomorrow..

P.S. Almost forgot, (how could I?), there is this little car race on tomorrow, the greatest spectacle in auto racing..the Indy 500!  Guess with no Dario Franchitti it dimmed in significance for me personally, but still a great watch!  Start your engines….

Thursday…French Open preview coming soon I promise!

It is Thursday and coming soon…I promise my French Open preview which gets underway this Sunday, 5/25/14.  Memorial Day weekend in USA!  Anyhow…I have A/C once again at long last!  Has been a two and a half week ordeal to get this worked out but as of tonight, I have air conditioning once again (here’s to hoping it lasts since it is the second time in less than a year the compressor has failed???)  After all, I am a writer/blogger, not a HVAC specialist.  Anyhow…tomorrow and/or no later than this weekend, I hope to have my French Open preview ready!!  Also, plan to try and catch the new movie Blended reuniting the lovely Drew Barrymore and the always funny Adam Sandler and I will be ready with my thoughts on what I hope will be a very funny, entertaining movie experience!

Meanwhile, Landon Donavon has been left off the roster for the US Soccer team for the upcoming World Cup competition.  Has to sting for such a long standing star and competitor!  Also, love the “news” that the Mexican soccer coach has banned the members of the Mexican soccer team from having sex during World Cup action.  Gee, that ought to be easy to police and enforce!

Last night, the San Antonio Spurs ran away from OKC in game two of the Western Conference finals, winning 112-77.  So the series will head to Oklahoma City but I gotta say, I am feeling a Spurs – Heat rematch (but I really hope the Pacers find a way to defeat the Heat, series tied at 1-1 after a disappointing loss in Indy in game two).  Speaking of Indy, there is a little race coming up this weekend, you may have heard of it, the Indy 500!!  Not the same for me with Dario Franchitti forced to retire, even though he is there working for team Gnassi!  My Indy insider is there spotting and just spoke with him a couple of days ago.  I told him he better get me Dario’s autograph!  Really love this race, it is the greatest sports car race in the world, but I miss Dario!

Until tomorrow. have a good night!

Sports, Pop Culture and Survivng “Paradise”

Sports, Pop Culture and Surviving “Paradise” on Wednesday, 5/21/14!!  But first, let’s hear it for hero cat “Tara” who saved a four year little boy under attack in his driveway from a raging dog…check it out on YouTube and ESPN.  Go Tara!!

First up, news from tennis and golf…Rory Mcilroy breaks off his engagement to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.  Bit of a shocker?  Rory is in Surrey, England preparing to play in the BMW PGA Championship which gets underway tomorrow.  I assume Wozniacki is preparing to play in the French Open which gets underway from Paris, France this Sunday.  So, announcements were sent out this weekend, rumors swirled of a September wedding in New York City (likely after the US Open tennis tournament) and now, it is over?  Quite sad.  I am sure Wozniacki is devastated as word is Rory called it off saying he was just not ready for “all that marriage entailed”.  In his interview on ESPN, he seems to be hurting as well.  There has been talk of them breaking up prior, they got engaged on New Year’s Eve after dating since 2011 (they met at a boxing match).  Anyhow…very unhappy ending for these two at this point..SAD.

NBA finals are finally in full swing.  Have to say, I miss LA, that would be the Lakers and Kobe.  That being said, I am pulling for the Spurs in the West and the Pacers in the East.  The Spurs took care of OKC in game one, 122-105 and game two is tonight.  The Thunder, even with Westbrook and league MVP Durant (CONGRATS and well deserved) are in trouble without the services of their big guy in the middle, Serge Ibaka.  Going to be a tall order to take out the Spurs without him.  The Spurs were oh so close to taking out the Heat last year in the NBA finals…game six…could have and should have so is this going to be the year?  Meanwhile, the Heat evened their series with the Pacers in Indy last night, 87-83 thanks to a fourth quarter virtuoso performance by King James and Wade, they finished with 22 points and 23 points respectively.  I would so love to see the Pacers win the Eastern Conference finals but losing that home game and heading back to Miami at 1-1 is worrisome.

Lucky Cavs for the second year in a row!  The Cleveland Cavilers won the lottery and will get the number one pick in the NBA draft for the second year in a row.  So who will they take?  Likely Andrew Wiggins of Kansas.  Meanwhile, the Lakers are #7.  There is just so much that is wrong with that…but they do need to make the most of that draft pick for sure!!

Most of our favorite TV shows have wrapped up for this season.  Last night…no New Girls, The Mindy Project, and About a Boy (my current favorite on Tuesday night!!).  Love this show which is based on the book by Nick Hornby and the great movie by the same name starring Hugh Grant.  Nashville wrapped up last Wednesday but don’t despair…Motive resumes tonight at 10:00 pm on ABC.  If you have not seen this great show before…check it out.  It is the most popular detective show in Canada and the leads are sassy and great.  This show gives you the victim and the perpetrator in the first few minutes and then works backwards for the remainder to unfold the drama.  Really great show.  (I have done posts about this show previously, check it out in the search provided on the Home page!)

And finally..it is Surviving “Paradise” the book day.  Please check out my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver.  Follow a southern woman who relocates to a new town full of great expectations only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances.  Full of great humor and drama!!  Look for more info on the Home page at this website and check out the Buy the Book option on the menu bar.  Thanks and have a great “Hump Day”!Surviving Paradise

It is Djokovic and Serena from Rome!!

Novak Djokovic derailed the “King of Clay”, Rafael Nadal today in the men’s final from Rome, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.  On the women’s side…the result was as expected, Serena Williams took care of the home town girl, Sara Errani in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.  All credit to Sara for making the final, but Serena is well, Serena!  On the men’s side, much more to read into this result.  Have been saying I thought Nadal was vulnerable on clay this year heading into Roland Garros (May 25th!) and Nole proved that he was up to the task of possibly taking the French Open title this year (Rafa has won it nine times, and he was denied his eight title in Rome today).  Also, Wawrinka should be a factor and never, ever forget about or rule out the GOAT, Mr. Federer!!  Also if Kei Nishikori is back healthy, he could really be a threat to win the upcoming second Grand Slam of 2014.  David Ferrer never gives up and is a clay court specialist, but I think it is Djokovic, Nadal, Federer, Wawrinka (although he has definitely been hot and cold since his big breakthrough down under), Nishikori, and maybe Andy Murray (hard to tell just where Andy’s head and body really is at from a confidence and health level).  So, great men’s match today, Nole wins, and women’s match, well all Serena as expected.  Brief respite as we await the start of the French Open next weekend…Memorial Day Weekend for those of us here in the good ole USA!

This afternoon…the NBA Eastern Conference finals gets underway with Miami at the Pacers…AT LAST!  Had to wonder if we were ever going to get here as the Pacers decided to take the adventurous route to this inevitable confrontation between the two best teams in the East.  GO PACERS!  I am sorry, I am still aboard the ABM club!  (Anybody but Miami!)

Tomorrow…OKC vs. Spurs in the West.  Like them both (but still love the Lakers) so hard to choose…love Westbrook and MVP Durant but I think I am pulling for the Spurs!

Later!

Final:  Pacers 107 – Heat 96!  Let’s go Pacers!!

From Rome, tennis finals are set!

From the BNL D’Italia in Rome, the finals for tomorrow’s tennis action are set!  On the women’s side, a bit of a surprise as Italy’s own Sara Errani defeated J. Jankovic 6-3, 7-5 (picked that one incorrectly).  The good news..an emotional final for her tomorrow in her home country.  The bad news…she will face Serena Williams, winner over Ana Ivanovic, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.  Sara is 0-6 against Williams.  I think it looks like another title for Ms. Williams tomorrow.

On the men’s side…drum roll please…it will be as expected!  Djokovic vs. Nadal.  #1 (Nadal) vs. #2 (Djokovic.  Djokovic was pushed really hard today by M. Raonic of Canada, great effort by Raonic!!  Djokovic prevailed 6-7, 7-6, 6-3.  Really good match.  Nadal cruised to victory over Dimitrov, 6-2, 6-2.  So who ya got in this one for tomorrow?  I think I will take Djokovic!

Now, will California Chrome get it done in the Preakness this afternoon?  We are about an hour away from race time.  I really hope this horse wins and gives us that glimmer of hope heading into the Belmont for a triple crown winner (have not had one since 1978 and it is time!)  Many horses have won the Derby and the Preakness only to fall short at the Belmont.  Still, getting ahead of ourselves.  Victor Espinoza will ride California Chrome today.  He last won both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness riding War Emblem.  Did not win the Belmont.  OK…stay tuned…back soon with the results!

And the dream continues…California Chrome wins the Preakness!!  Just like at the Kentucky Derby, a burst of speed down the back stretch seals the deal!  I love it…now on to the Belmont!  Can we finally get a triple crown winner???  I hope so!  Ride on Curlin places second and Social Inclusion places third!

Tennis from Rome on Friday!

Tennis results are in from Rome today (Friday) and perhaps a few surprises, especially on the women’s side.  J. Jankovic defeated A. Radwanska 6-4, 6-4 and S. Errani (Italian) upset world number two Li Na, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.  Disappointed for Li Na and Radwanska, was pulling for them.  Meanwhile Serena William did we expect her to do, won going away over Zhang of China, 6-1, 6-3 and Ana Ivanovic took a tough match over Saurez-Navarro to advance into the semifinals tomorrow.  So, tomorrow, Serena vs. Ana and Jankovic vs. Errani.  Other than Serena, bet noone had this on their semifinal card!

On the men’s side…some new names as well.  Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray had a beauty of a three set match, with Nadal prevailing, 1-6, 6-3, 7-5.  Perhaps an even better match was between Novak Djokovic and David Ferrer (the little bulldog that never gives up!) with Novak winning in three sets, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.  Raonic over J. Chardy (THAT guy that took out my guy, Roger Federer) in three sets and Dimitrov over Tommy Haas who sadly had to retire with a shoulder injury.  Hate that for Haas!  So tomorrow, Djokovic vs. Raonic (big serve, really nice young man from Canada) and Dimitrov (I am warming to him) vs. Nadal.

Predictions…Serena and Jankovic?  Men…Nadal and Djokovic (no upsets here?)  OK, over and out for today.  Enjoy your Friday evening!

P.S. No Unforgettable on tonight on CBS…BUMMER!

Thursday tennis results from Rome

OK, here are the tennis results from Rome at the BNL D’Italia!  Sorry for the delay but it has been one of those days!  No elaboration!

Men’s action: Murray over Meltzer in two sets; Nadal in a tough match over Youzhny in three sets; (Murray and Nadal tomorrow in a semifinal)  Raonic in an “upset” over Tsonga in two sets and Wawrinka falls to the “old” guy Tommy Haas!  Also, Dimitrov in three sets over Berdych and well, I guess that is enough!  Still missing Federer but that is all me!

On the women’s side of the draw: Li Na over Stosur in two sets; Serena in two easy sets; A. Radwanska in two sets; Jankovic and Errani in two sets as well.  In the match of the day, Ana Ivanovic over Maria Sharapova, 6-1, 6-4.  Go Ana!  She was oh, so close last week in Madrid and today she got it done!

Tomorrow the action continues!  Really happy for Ana Ivanovic and Tommy Haas.  Still say Rafa is vulnerable.  Djokovic advanced easily and S. Halep forced to withdraw on the women’s side due to a stomach ailment.

Looking forward to the quarterfinals and the semifinals and I do realize that NBA action is ongoing as well.  Promise…I will get to that as soon as the tennis action concludes!

Short post but that is all I have today folks.  Happy Friday tomorrow and I will be back with you!  Have a good night!

Back to “Daddy duty” for Federer!

Unfortunately, Roger Federer will be headed back to Switzerland to rejoin his recently expanded family after falling to J. Chardy of France in the second round of the BNL D’Italia in Rome, 6-1, 3-6, 6-7.  Roger looked quite rusty and Chardy is a tricky match up, (Fed lost a set to him earlier this year in Brisbane).  Fed had a match point in the tie break in the third set but Chardy hit an unbelievable cross court running forehand that probably would go in about 2% of the time and saved the match at that moment.  Roger likely had flashbacks to a similar scenario in Flushing Meadow when he had Novak Djokovic on the ropes at the US Open and Nole pulled a similar hat trick.  Have to say all congrats to Chardy as he really took the match and Roger had a huge number of unforced errors.  The conditions were less than favorable as well, very windy with the red clay blowing around the court with winds up to 20 mph.  All in all, NOT the match I wanted to wake up this morning and see, (especially with the A/C broken for the second time in less than eleven months in ATL!).  Wish Federer could have won and got some good clay court action in this week prior to the French Open but a big ask after pulling out of Madrid and experiencing the birth of his second set of twins with Mirka just last Tuesday.  Have to wonder if Mirka was hoping he would go a little further in the tournament?  Just kidding…Daddy is on his way home for about ten days perhaps…action gets underway in Paris May 25th.  Anyhow, disappointed Federer fan am I but there is much more tennis action underway today.  Back with that later as well as my usual Surviving “Paradise” on Wednesday promo!

And I am back!  THE match of the day from Rome just finished (finally!), Rafael Nadal over G. Simon in three long sets (0ver three hours).  Rafa advances, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2 (Simon just seemed to wear out in the third set).  This was far from routine, and I believe Rafa is vulnerable with the French Open coming up.  He should have lost to Nishikori last week in Madrid in the final had Kei not succumbed to his injuries (Nishikori is sitting this tournament out and hopefully will be ready for Roland Garros).  Anyhow, Rafa is through into the round of sixteen, great match and great effort by G. Simon.  Still, late in Rome, Jankovic and Kuznetsova are about to take the court!

Winners today…Tommy Haas in two sets (he will face Wawrinka tomorrow!), Dimitrov in two sets, Berdych in two sets, Andy Murray in two sets, Youzhny and Tsonga, both in two sets.  Still, hated to wake up and watch Fed go out in three sets to Chardy.

On the women’s side…winners: Sharapova in two sets, S. Williams in two sets (looking healthy right now), Errani and Ivanovic advanced in two sets, S. Halep needed three sets, and Venus Williams and Sloane Stephens both lost in two sets.

Whew…that was a lot of tennis today!

Now, to the business order of the day…Wednesday…Surviving “Paradise” day.  Please check out my book Surviving “Paradise” by Susan Willoch Shaver available at Amazon.com.  Follow a southern woman who relocates to a new town full of great expectations only to be met by a ridiculous set of people and circumstances.  Check out the Home page at the website along with the Buy the Book page on the menu bar.  Thanks!Surviving Paradise

Tonight, ABC hit Nashville offers its season finale.  It is guaranteed to be filled with drama and intrigue.  I think there may be a proposal…will it be accepted?  Much more in store I am sure.  Next Wednesday, 5/21/14, Motive will return in this 10:00 pm time slot on ABC.  Until later…enjoy your evening!

Mr. Federer to serve tomorrow in Rome!

The musical sound of those words…”Mr. Federer to serve” will ring in Rome tomorrow at the BNL D’Italia, the last big Masters 1000 clay court event prior to Roland Garros (French Open)!  Roger announced on Monday that he was in fact in Rome and would play this event, just six days after the birth of his second set of twins, this time boys, Leo and Lenny, with wife Mirka.  She has given him the go ahead…gotta love Mirka…and Roger is ready to play tomorrow and will face J. Chardy in his first match.  So happy to know Federer is back in action.  Let’s face it, there are points to defend in this decision.  Roger made the final last year, losing to Nadal, and he needs another good clay court tournament under his belt prior to heading to France.  He is a mere 70 points behind fellow Swiss player Stan Wawrinka in the rankings (Stan at #3, Roger at #4) and he does not want to fall further in the rankings with Ferrer and Berdych hot on his heels prior to the French Open.  So, if all goes well, Fed has a great showing in Rome, heads home to spend time with the family, and then is off to Paris!

Meanwhile, action is already underway in  Rome.  Yesterday, M. Youzhny advanced in two sets, L. Rosol upset the Italian Fognini in two sets, G. Dimitrov (Sharapova’s boyfriend) advanced in two sets, Tsonga over Dolgop0lov in two sets.  Today, Djokovic returned after sitting out Madrid with his wrist injury and took care of Stepanek, 6 – 3, 7-5.  Wawrinka advanced with ease over qualifier Riba in two sets, thirty five year old Tommy Haas defeated the Italian A. Seppi in two sets (second set tie breaker), P. Kolshreiber took care of T. Robredo in two sets, and D. Ferrer will take the court shortly.  Tomorrow, both Nadal and Federer in action.  Also, on the women’s side, Serena Williams will play after withdrawing from Madrid last week with a thigh injury.

Until later!!

Madrid Open final and I can no longer watch…

The Madrid Open final between Rafael Nadal and Kei Nishikori has not yet finished but it is over and I can no longer watch.  I am actually mad…Nishikori was beating Nadal like a drum on clay in Spain, and then the back injury he has battled with has taken him out of it…update he just withdrew.  What a SHAME!  Nishikori won the first set 6-2 and had Nadal on the ropes in the second with a break and then the back injury reared its ugly head and it all turned on a dime.  He tried to play the third set but he could barely walk.  No disrespect to Nadal and his fans, but he did not turn this match around.  Nishikori was on the way to a huge win before this injury and it really is a shame to watch and see the pain in his eyes and surely in his heart as well.  Nishikori is quite the up and comer but sometimes his body does let him down.  He has been working on his strength, he is like David Ferrer, a short guy (5″10″) and plays a similar style…energizer bunny that keeps on going.  Today, he could not keep on going and Rafa wins the Madrid title…by default.

On the women’s side, Maria Sharapova won her 9th career title on clay, after dropping the first set to S. Halep of Romania, 2-6.  Halep faltered in the second and Maria went on to win the title with a second and third set win, 6-2, 6-3.  Not the outcome I wanted but it was the outcome I expected.  So congrats to Sharapova and Nadal…albeit with an asterisk from me!

Just had to vent..hate to see what just happened to Nishikori.  So, next week we move to Rome.  Djokovic has announced his intention to play as has Serena (both with injuries).  Federer has not yet given us his intention…he was practicing in Zurich yesterday with his twin daughters in attendance.  So…we shall see.

Happy Mothers Day to all mothers out there!  Have to head out for an appointment then dinner with one of my daughters.  Back later with the final round results from TPC Sawgrass!

Sorry guys…dinner ran long and then there was that rain delay in Jacksonville!  I have it on my DVR but to sum things up for you…Martin Kaymer sinks a 30 foot shot for par on the 17th and it saved the lead for him, winning at -13.  Jim Furyk came in second at -12, Sergio Garcia in third at -11, Justin Rose and 20 year old Jordan Spieth (started the day tied for the lead) finished at -10.  Rounding out the top of the leaderboard, Jimmy Walker, Lee Westwood and Rory Mcilroy (what a comeback from Rory in the final round!) at -9.  Tremendous finish after the weather delay at TPC Sawgrass with the German born Kaymer winning his first tournament on American soil in four years!  So close for Furyk, and Spieth again in the top five.
